Many numerical optimization methods use scenario trees as a discrete approximation for the true (multi-dimensional) probability distributions of the problem’s random variables. Realistic specifications in financial optimization models can lead to tree sizes that quickly become computationally intractable. In this paper we focus on the two main approaches proposed in the literature to deal with this problem: scenario reduction and state aggregation. We first state necessary conditions for the node structure of a tree to rule out arbitrage. However, currently available scenario reduction algorithms do not take these conditions explicitly into account. State aggregation excludes arbitrage opportunities by relying on the risk-neutral measure. This is, however, only appropriate for pricing purposes but not for optimization. Both limitations are illustrated by numerical examples. We conclude that neither of these methods is suitable to solve financial optimization models in asset–liability or portfolio management.  相似文献

We compare two popular scenario tree generation methods in the context of financial optimization: moment matching and scenario reduction. Using a simple problem with a known analytic solution, moment matching–when ensuring absence of arbitrage–replicates this solution precisely. On the other hand, even if the scenario trees generated by scenario reduction are arbitrage-free, the solutions are biased and highly variable. These results hold for correlated and uncorrelated asset returns, as well as for normal and non-normal returns.  相似文献

A scenario tree is an efficient way to represent a stochastic data process in decision problems under uncertainty. This paper addresses how to efficiently generate appropriate scenario trees. A knowledge‐based scenario tree generation method is proposed; the new method is further improved by accounting for subjective judgements or expectations about the random future. Compared with existing approaches, complicated mathematical models and time‐consuming estimation, simulation and optimization problem solution are avoided in our knowledge‐based algorithms, and large‐scale scenario trees can be quickly generated. To show the advantages of the new algorithms, a multiperiod portfolio selection problem is considered, and a dynamic risk measure is adopted to control the intermediate risk, which is superior to the single‐period risk measure used in the existing literature. A series of numerical experiments are carried out by using real trading data from the Shanghai stock market. The results show that the scenarios generated by our algorithms can properly represent the underlying distribution; our algorithms have high performance, say, a scenario tree with up to 10,000 scenarios can be generated in less than a half minute. The applications in the multiperiod portfolio management problem demonstrate that our scenario tree generation methods are stable, and the optimal trading strategies obtained with the generated scenario tree are reasonable, efficient and robust.  Given a convex stochastic programming problem with a discrete initial probability distribution, the problem of optimal scenario reduction is stated as follows: Determine a scenario subset of prescribed cardinality and a probability measure based on this set that is the closest to the initial distribution in terms of a natural (or canonical) probability metric. Arguments from stability analysis indicate that Fortet-Mourier type probability metrics may serve as such canonical metrics. Efficient algorithms are developed that determine optimal reduced measures approximately. Numerical experience is reported for reductions of electrical load scenario trees for power management under uncertainty. For instance, it turns out that after 50% reduction of the scenario tree the optimal reduced tree still has about 90% relative accuracy. An important issue for solving multistage stochastic programs consists in the approximate representation of the (multivariate) stochastic input process in the form of a scenario tree. In this paper, we develop (stability) theory-based heuristics for generating scenario trees out of an initial set of scenarios. They are based on forward or backward algorithms for tree generation consisting of recursive scenario reduction and bundling steps. Conditions are established implying closeness of optimal values of the original process and its tree approximation, respectively, by relying on a recent stability result in Heitsch, Römisch and Strugarek (SIAM J Optim 17:511–525, 2006) for multistage stochastic programs. Numerical experience is reported for constructing multivariate scenario trees in electricity portfolio management.  相似文献

Even with recent enhancements, computation times for large-scale multistage problems with risk-averse objective functions can be very long. Therefore, preprocessing via scenario reduction could be considered as a way to significantly improve the overall performance. Stage-wise backward reduction of single scenarios applied to a fixed branching structure of the tree is a promising tool for efficient algorithms like stochastic dual dynamic programming. We provide computational results which show an acceptable precision of the results for the reduced problem and a substantial decrease of the total computation time.  相似文献

The rectilinear Steiner tree problem is to find a minimum-length rectilinear interconnection of a set of points in the plane. A reduction from the rectilinear Steiner tree problem to the graph Steiner tree problem allows the use of exact algorithms for the graph Steiner tree problem to solve the rectilinear problem. Furthermore, a number of more direct, geometric algorithms have been devised for computing optimal rectilinear Steiner trees. This paper surveys algorithms for computing optimal rectilinear Steiner trees and presents experimental results comparing nine of them: graph Steiner tree algorithms due to Beasley, Bern, Dreyfus and Wagner, Hakimi, and Shore, Foulds, and Gibbons and geometric algorithms due to Ganley and Cohoon, Salowe and Warme, and Thomborson, Alpern, and Carter.  相似文献

This paper considers model uncertainty for multistage stochastic programs. The data and information structure of the baseline model is a tree, on which the decision problem is defined. We consider “ambiguity neighborhoods” around this tree as alternative models which are close to the baseline model. Closeness is defined in terms of a distance for probability trees, called the nested distance. This distance is appropriate for scenario models of multistage stochastic optimization problems as was demonstrated in Pflug and Pichler (SIAM J Optim 22:1–23, 2012). The ambiguity model is formulated as a minimax problem, where the the optimal decision is to be found, which minimizes the maximal objective function within the ambiguity set. We give a setup for studying saddle point properties of the minimax problem. Moreover, we present solution algorithms for finding the minimax decisions at least asymptotically. As an example, we consider a multiperiod stochastic production/inventory control problem with weekly ordering. The stochastic scenario process is given by the random demands for two products. We determine the minimax solution and identify the worst trees within the ambiguity set. It turns out that the probability weights of the worst case trees are concentrated on few very bad scenarios.  相似文献

We consider in this paper the efficient ways to generate multi-stage scenario trees. A general modified K-means clustering method is first presented to generate the scenario tree with a general structure. This method takes the time dependency of the simulated path into account. Based on the traditional and modified K-means analyses, the moment matching of multi-stage scenario trees is described as a linear programming (LP) problem. By simultaneously utilizing simulation, clustering, non-linear time series and moment matching skills, a sequential generation method and another new hybrid approach which can generate the whole multi-stage tree right off are proposed. The advantages of these new methods are: the vector autoregressive and multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (VAR-MGARCH) model is adopted to properly reflect the inter-stage dependency and the time-varying volatilities of the data process, the LP-based moment matching technique ensures that the scenario tree generation problem can be solved more efficiently and the tree scale can be further controlled, and in the meanwhile, the statistical properties of the random data process are maintained properly. What is more important, our new LP methods can guarantee at least two branches are derived from each non-leaf node and thus overcome the drawback in relevant papers. We carry out a series of numerical experiments and apply the scenario tree generation methods to a portfolio management problem, which demonstrate the practicality, efficiency and advantages of our new approaches over other models or methods.  相似文献

A framework for the reduction of scenario trees as inputs of (linear) multistage stochastic programs is provided such that optimal values and approximate solution sets remain close to each other. The argument is based on upper bounds of the L r -distance and the filtration distance, and on quantitative stability results for multistage stochastic programs. The important difference from scenario reduction in two-stage models consists in incorporating the filtration distance. An algorithm is presented for selecting and removing nodes of a scenario tree such that a prescribed error tolerance is met. Some numerical experience is reported.  相似文献

We consider convex stochastic programs with an (approximate) initial probability distribution P having finite support supp P, i.e., finitely many scenarios. The behaviour of such stochastic programs is stable with respect to perturbations of P measured in terms of a Fortet-Mourier probability metric. The problem of optimal scenario reduction consists in determining a probability measure that is supported by a subset of supp P of prescribed cardinality and is closest to P in terms of such a probability metric. Two new versions of forward and backward type algorithms are presented for computing such optimally reduced probability measures approximately. Compared to earlier versions, the computational performance (accuracy, running time) of the new algorithms has been improved considerably. Numerical experience is reported for different instances of scenario trees with computable optimal lower bounds. The test examples also include a ternary scenario tree representing the weekly electrical load process in a power management model.  相似文献

We propose a new scenario tree reduction algorithm for multistage stochastic programs, which integrates the reduction of a scenario tree into the solution process of the stochastic program. This allows to construct a scenario tree that is highly adapted on the optimization problem. The algorithm starts with a rough approximation of the original tree and locally refines this approximation as long as necessary. Promising numerical results for scenario tree reductions in the settings of portfolio management and power management with uncertain load are presented.  相似文献

We study the multi-stage portfolio selection problem where the utility function of an investor is ambiguous. The ambiguity is characterized by dynamic stochastic dominance constraints, which are able to capture the dynamics of the random return sequence during the investment process. We propose a multi-stage dynamic stochastic dominance constrained portfolio selection model, and use a mixed normal distribution with time-varying weights and the K-means clustering technique to generate a scenario tree for the transformation of the proposed model. Based on the scenario tree representation, we derive two linear programming approximation problems, using the sampling approach or the duality theory, which provide an upper bound approximation and a lower bound approximation for the original nonconvex problem. The upper bound is asymptotically tight with infinitely many samples. Numerical results illustrate the practicality and efficiency of the proposed new model and solution techniques.

In this paper we propose a dynamic programming algorithm to compare two quotiented ordered trees using a constrained edit distance. An ordered tree is a tree in which the left-to-right order among siblings is significant. A quotiented ordered tree is an ordered tree T with an equivalence relation on vertices and such that, when the equivalence classes are collapsed to super-nodes, the graph so obtained is an ordered tree as well. Based on an algorithm proposed by Zhang and Shasha [K. Zhang, D. Shasha, Simple fast algorithms for the editing distance between trees and related problems, SIAM Journal on Computing 18 (6) (1989) 1245–1262] and introducing new notations, we describe a tree edit distance between quotiented ordered trees preserving equivalence relations on vertices during computation which works in polynomial time. Its application to RNA secondary structures comparison is finally presented.  相似文献

For a multi-stage stochastic programming problem, one approach is to explore a scenario tree based formulation for the problem and solve the formulation efficiently. There has been significant research progress on how to generate scenario trees in the literature. However, there is limited work on analyzing the computational complexity of the scenario-tree based formulation that considers the number of tree nodes as the input size. In this paper, we use stochastic lot-sizing problems as examples to study the computational complexity issues for the scenario-tree based formulations. We develop production path properties and a general dynamic programming framework based on these properties. The dynamic programming framework allows us to show that the optimal value function is piecewise linear and continuous, which enables us to develop polynomial time algorithms for several different problems, including those with backlogging and varying capacities under certain conditions. As special cases, we develop polynomial time algorithms that run in O(n2){\mathcal{O}(n^2)} and O(n2T log n){\mathcal{O}(n^2T\,{\rm log}\,n)} times, respectively for stochastic uncapacitated and constant capacitated lot-sizing problems with backlogging, regardless of the scenario tree structure.  相似文献

In this work, we suggest a novel quadratic programming‐based algorithm to generate an arbitrage‐free call option surface. The empirical performance of the proposed method is evaluated using S&P 500 Index call options. We apply constrained smoothing B‐splines to the construction of arbitrage‐free implied volatilities and derived measures. The constrained smoothing B‐splines allows the imposition of the constraints of monotonicity and convexity given by the no‐arbitrage conditions in the pricing function. We illustrate the methodology in the construction of implied volatilities and also in the construction of derived measures such as risk‐neutral densities, showing that it can be used as an effective tool for general treatment of option prices. In stochastic optimization problems, uncertainty is normally represented by means of a scenario tree. Finding an accurate representation of this uncertainty when dealing with a set of historical series is an important issue, because of its influence in the results of the above mentioned problems. This article uses a procedure to create the scenario tree divided into two phases: the first one produces a tree that represents accurately the original probability distribution, and in the second phase that tree is reduced to make it tractable. Several clustering methods are analysed and proposed in the paper to obtain the scenario tree. Specifically, these are applied to an academic case and to natural hydro inflows series, and comparisons amongst them are established according to these results.  相似文献
