Let (QC) (resp. ) be the -algebra generated by the Toeplitz operators QC (resp. ) on the Hardy space of the unit circle. A well-known theorem of Davidson asserts that (QC) is the essential commutant of . We show that the essential commutant of (QC) is strictly larger than . Thus the image of in the Calkin algebra does not satisfy the double commutant relation. We also give a criterion for membership in the essential commutant of (QC).

On the Sierpinski Gasket (SG) and related fractals, we define a notion of conformal energy and conformal Laplacian for a given conformal factor , based on the corresponding notions in Riemannian geometry in dimension . We derive a differential equation that describes the dependence of the effective resistances of on . We show that the spectrum of (Dirichlet or Neumann) has similar asymptotics compared to the spectrum of the standard Laplacian, and also has similar spectral gaps (provided the function does not vary too much). We illustrate these results with numerical approximations. We give a linear extension algorithm to compute the energy measures of harmonic functions (with respect to the standard energy), and as an application we show how to compute the dimensions of these measures for integer values of . We derive analogous linear extension algorithms for energy measures on related fractals.

Let and be uncountable Polish spaces. represents a family of sets provided each set in occurs as an -section of . We say that uniquely represents provided each set in occurs exactly once as an -section of . is universal for if every -section of is in . is uniquely universal for if it is universal and uniquely represents . We show that there is a Borel set in which uniquely represents the translates of if and only if there is a Vitali set. Assuming there is a Borel set with all sections sets and all non-empty sets are uniquely represented by . Assuming there is a Borel set with all sections which uniquely represents the countable subsets of . There is an analytic set in with all sections which represents all the subsets of , but no Borel set can uniquely represent the sets. This last theorem is generalized to higher Borel classes.

We study conjugacy closed loops by means of their multiplication groups. Let be a conjugacy closed loop, its nucleus, the associator subloop, and and the left and right multiplication groups, respectively. Put . We prove that the cosets of agree with orbits of , that and that one can define an abelian group on . We also explain why the study of finite conjugacy closed loops can be restricted to the case of nilpotent. Group is shown to be a subgroup of a power of (which is abelian), and we prove that can be embedded into . Finally, we describe all conjugacy closed loops of order .

For a ringed space , we show that the deformations of the abelian category of sheaves of -modules (Lowen and Van den Bergh, 2006) are obtained from algebroid prestacks, as introduced by Kontsevich. In case is a quasi-compact separated scheme the same is true for , the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on . It follows in particular that there is a deformation equivalence between and .

There are several notions of largeness that make sense in any semigroup, and others such as the various kinds of density that make sense in sufficiently well-behaved semigroups including and . It was recently shown that sets in which are multiplicatively large must contain arbitrarily large geoarithmetic progressions, that is, sets of the form , as well as sets of the form . Consequently, given a finite partition of , one cell must contain such configurations. In the partition case we show that we can get substantially stronger conclusions. We establish some combined additive and multiplicative Ramsey theoretic consequences of known algebraic results in the semigroups and , derive some new algebraic results, and derive consequences of them involving geoarithmetic progressions. For example, we show that given any finite partition of there must be, for each , sets of the form together with , the arithmetic progression , and the geometric progression in one cell of the partition. More generally, we show that, if is a commutative semigroup and a partition regular family of finite subsets of , then for any finite partition of and any , there exist and such that is contained in a cell of the partition. Also, we show that for certain partition regular families and of subsets of , given any finite partition of some cell contains structures of the form for some .

Let be a Hilbert space of analytic functions on the open unit disc such that the operator of multiplication with the identity function defines a contraction operator. In terms of the reproducing kernel for we will characterize the largest set such that for each , the meromorphic function has nontangential limits a.e. on . We will see that the question of whether or not has linear Lebesgue measure 0 is related to questions concerning the invariant subspace structure of .

We further associate with a second set , which is defined in terms of the norm on . For example, has the property that for all if and only if has linear Lebesgue measure 0.

It turns out that a.e., by which we mean that has linear Lebesgue measure 0. We will study conditions that imply that a.e.. As one corollary to our results we will show that if dim and if there is a such that for all and all we have , then a.e. and the following four conditions are equivalent:

(1) for some ,

(2) for all , ,

(3) has nonzero Lebesgue measure,

(4) every nonzero invariant subspace of has index 1, i.e., satisfies dim .

Say that a separable, unital -algebra is strongly self-absorbing if there exists an isomorphism such that and are approximately unitarily equivalent -homomorphisms. We study this class of algebras, which includes the Cuntz algebras , , the UHF algebras of infinite type, the Jiang-Su algebra and tensor products of with UHF algebras of infinite type. Given a strongly self-absorbing -algebra we characterise when a separable -algebra absorbs tensorially (i.e., is -stable), and prove closure properties for the class of separable -stable -algebras. Finally, we compute the possible -groups and prove a number of classification results which suggest that the examples listed above are the only strongly self-absorbing -algebras.

We establish some sufficient conditions for the profinite and pro- completions of an abstract group of type (resp. of finite cohomological dimension, of finite Euler characteristic) to be of type over the field for a fixed natural prime (resp. of finite cohomological -dimension, of finite Euler -characteristic).

We apply our methods for orientable Poincaré duality groups of dimension 3 and show that the pro- completion of is a pro- Poincaré duality group of dimension 3 if and only if every subgroup of finite index in has deficiency 0 and is infinite. Furthermore if is infinite but not a Poincaré duality pro- group, then either there is a subgroup of finite index in of arbitrary large deficiency or is virtually . Finally we show that if every normal subgroup of finite index in has finite abelianization and the profinite completion of has an infinite Sylow -subgroup, then is a profinite Poincaré duality group of dimension 3 at the prime .

Let be a homeomorphism of the open annulus isotopic to the identity and let be a lift of to the universal cover without fixed point. Then we show that admits a Brouwer line which is a lift of a properly imbedded line joining one end to the other in the annulus or admits a free essential simple closed curve.

We define , a substructure of (the lattice of classes), and show that a quotient structure of , , is isomorphic to . The result builds on the isomorphism machinery, and allows us to transfer invariant classes from to , though not, in general, orbits. Further properties of and ramifications of the isomorphism are explored, including degrees of equivalence classes and degree invariance.

One-dimensional asymptotic classes are introduced and studied here. These classes come equipped with a notion of dimension that is intended to provide for the study of classes of finite structures a concept that is central in the development of model theory for infinite structures. Connections with the model theory of infinite structures are also drawn.

Let , , be a bounded Lipschitz domain. For Laplace's equation in , we study the Dirichlet and Neumann problems with boundary data in the weighted space , where , is a fixed point on , and denotes the surface measure on . We prove that there exists such that the Dirichlet problem is uniquely solvable if , and the Neumann problem is uniquely solvable if . If is a domain, one may take . The regularity for the Dirichlet problem with data in the weighted Sobolev space is also considered. Finally we establish the weighted estimates with general weights for the Dirichlet and regularity problems.

On orbital partitions and exceptionality of primitive permutation groups   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Let and be transitive permutation groups on a set such that is a normal subgroup of . The overgroup induces a natural action on the set of non-trivial orbitals of on . In the study of Galois groups of exceptional covers of curves, one is led to characterizing the triples where fixes no elements of ; such triples are called exceptional. In the study of homogeneous factorizations of complete graphs, one is led to characterizing quadruples where is a partition of such that is transitive on ; such a quadruple is called a TOD (transitive orbital decomposition). It follows easily that the triple in a TOD is exceptional; conversely if an exceptional triple is such that is cyclic of prime-power order, then there exists a partition of such that is a TOD. This paper characterizes TODs such that is primitive and is cyclic of prime-power order. An application is given to the classification of self-complementary vertex-transitive graphs.

Given a closed -rectifiable set embedded in Euclidean space, we investigate minimal weighted Riesz energy points on ; that is, points constrained to and interacting via the weighted power law potential , where is a fixed parameter and is an admissible weight. (In the unweighted case () such points for fixed tend to the solution of the best-packing problem on as the parameter .) Our main results concern the asymptotic behavior as of the minimal energies as well as the corresponding equilibrium configurations. Given a distribution with respect to -dimensional Hausdorff measure on , our results provide a method for generating -point configurations on that are ``well-separated' and have asymptotic distribution as .

We introduce a numerical isomorphism invariant for any triangulation of . Although its definition is purely topological (inspired by the bridge number of knots), reflects the geometric properties of . Specifically, if is polytopal or shellable, then is ``small' in the sense that we obtain a linear upper bound for in the number of tetrahedra of . Conversely, if is ``small', then is ``almost' polytopal, since we show how to transform into a polytopal triangulation by local subdivisions. The minimal number of local subdivisions needed to transform into a polytopal triangulation is at least . Using our previous results [The size of triangulations supporting a given link, Geometry & Topology 5 (2001), 369-398], we obtain a general upper bound for exponential in . We prove here by explicit constructions that there is no general subexponential upper bound for in . Thus, we obtain triangulations that are ``very far' from being polytopal. Our results yield a recognition algorithm for that is conceptually simpler, although somewhat slower, than the famous Rubinstein-Thompson algorithm.
