An undirected graph is a treelike comparability graph if it admits a transitive orientation such that its transitive reduction is a tree. We show that treelike comparability graphs are distance hereditary. Utilizing this property, we give a linear time recognition algorithm. We then characterize permutation graphs that are treelike. Finally, we consider the Partitioning into Bounded Cliques problem on special subgraphs of treelike permutation graphs.  相似文献

We study entanglement properties of mixed density matrices obtained from combinatorial Laplacians. This is done by introducing the notion of the density matrix of a graph. We characterize the graphs with pure density matrices and show that the density matrix of a graph can be always written as a uniform mixture of pure density matrices of graphs. We consider the von Neumann entropy of these matrices and we characterize the graphs for which the minimum and maximum values are attained. We then discuss the problem of separability by pointing out that separability of density matrices of graphs does not always depend on the labelling of the vertices. We consider graphs with a tensor product structure and simple cases for which combinatorial properties are linked to the entanglement of the state. We calculate the concurrence of all graphs on four vertices representing entangled states. It turns out that for these graphs the value of the concurrence is exactly fractional. This paper addresses matrix approximation problems for matrices that are large, sparse, and/or representations of large graphs. To tackle these problems, we consider algorithms that are based primarily on coarsening techniques, possibly combined with random sampling. A multilevel coarsening technique is proposed, which utilizes a hypergraph associated with the data matrix and a graph coarsening strategy based on column matching. We consider a number of standard applications of this technique as well as a few new ones. Among standard applications, we first consider the problem of computing partial singular value decomposition, for which a combination of sampling and coarsening yields significantly improved singular value decomposition results relative to sampling alone. We also consider the column subset selection problem, a popular low‐rank approximation method used in data‐related applications, and show how multilevel coarsening can be adapted for this problem. Similarly, we consider the problem of graph sparsification and show how coarsening techniques can be employed to solve it. We also establish theoretical results that characterize the approximation error obtained and the quality of the dimension reduction achieved by a coarsening step, when a proper column matching strategy is employed. Numerical experiments illustrate the performances of the methods in a few applications.  相似文献

We consider the problem of recognizing AT-free graphs. Although there is a simple O(n3) algorithm, no faster method for solving this problem had been known. Here we give three different algorithms which have a better time complexity for graphs which are sparse or have a sparse complement; in particular we give algorithms which recognize AT-free graphs in , , and O(n2.82+nm). In addition we give a new characterization of graphs with bounded asteroidal number by the help of the knotting graph, a combinatorial structure which was introduced by Gallai for considering comparability graphs.  相似文献

We study some problems related to the effect of bounded, additive sample noise in the bandlimited interpolation given by the Whittaker-Shannon-Kotelnikov (WSK) sampling formula. We establish a generalized form of the WSK series that allows us to consider the bandlimited interpolation of any bounded sequence at the zeros of a sine-type function. The main result of the paper is that if the samples in this series consist of independent, uniformly distributed random variables, then the resulting bandlimited interpolation almost surely has a bounded global average. In this context, we also explore the related notion of a bandlimited function with bounded mean oscillation. We prove some properties of such functions, and in particular, we show that they are either bounded or have unbounded samples at any positive sampling rate. We also discuss a few concrete examples of functions that demonstrate these properties.  相似文献

In this article we look at the register allocation problem. In the literature this problem is frequently reduced to the general graph coloring problem and the solutions to the problem are obtained from graph coloring heuristics. Hence, no algorithm with a good performance guarantee is known. Here we show that when attention is restricted tostructured programswhich we define to be programs whose control-flow graphs are series-parallel, there is an efficient algorithm that produces a solution which is within a factor of 2 of the optimal solution. We note that even with the previous restriction the resulting coloring problem is NP-complete.We also consider how to delete a minimum number of edges from arbitrary control-flow graphs to make them series-parallel and to apply our algorithm. We show that this problem is Max SNP hard. However, we define the notion of anapproximate articulation pointand we give efficient algorithms to find approximate articulation points. We present a heuristic for the edge deletion problem based on this notion which seems to work well when the given graph is close to series-parallel.  相似文献

Given an undirected graph, the problem of finding a maximal matching that has minimum total weight is NP-hard. This problem has been studied extensively from a graph theoretical point of view. Most of the existing literature considers the problem in some restricted classes of graphs and give polynomial time exact or approximation algorithms. On the contrary, we consider the problem on general graphs and approach it from an optimization point of view. In this paper, we develop integer programming formulations for the minimum weighted maximal matching problem and analyze their efficacy on randomly generated graphs. We also compare solutions found by a greedy approximation algorithm, which is based on the literature, against optimal solutions. Our results show that our integer programming formulations are able to solve medium size instances to optimality and suggest further research for improvement.  相似文献

A graph is Laplacian integral if the spectrum of its Laplacian matrix consists entirely of integers. We consider the class of constructably Laplacian integral graphs - those graphs that be constructed from an empty graph by adding a sequence of edges in such a way that each time a new edge is added, the resulting graph is Laplacian integral. We characterize the constructably Laplacian integral graphs in terms of certain forbidden vertex-induced subgraphs, and consider the number of nonisomorphic Laplacian integral graphs that can be constructed by adding a suitable edge to a constructably Laplacian integral graph. We also discuss the eigenvalues of constructably Laplacian integral graphs, and identify families of isospectral nonisomorphic graphs within the class.  相似文献

We consider two classes of higher order proximity graphs defined on a set of points in the plane, namely, the k-Delaunay graph and the k-Gabriel graph. We give bounds on the following combinatorial and geometric properties of these graphs: spanning ratio, diameter, connectivity, chromatic number, and minimum number of layers necessary to partition the edges of the graphs so that no two edges of the same layer cross.  相似文献

It is well known that the edge-connectivity of a simple, connected, vertex-transitive graph attains its regular degree. It is then natural to consider the relationship between the graph’s edge-connectivity and the number of orbits of its automorphism group. In this paper, we discuss the edge connectedness of graphs with two orbits of the same size, and characterize when these double-orbit graphs are maximally edge connected and super-edge-connected. We also obtain a sufficient condition for some double-orbit graphs to be λ-optimal. Furthermore, by applying our results we obtain some results on vertex/edge-transitive bipartite graphs, mixed Cayley graphs and half vertex-transitive graphs.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider a new edge colouring problem motivated by wireless mesh networks optimization: the proportional edge colouring problem. Given a graph G with positive weights associated to its edges, we want to find a proper edge colouring which assigns to each edge at least a proportion (given by its weight) of all the colours. If such colouring exists, we want to find one using the minimum number of colours. We proved that deciding if a weighted graph admits a proportional edge colouring is polynomial while determining its proportional edge chromatic number is NP-hard. We also give a lower and an upper bound that can be polynomially computed. We finally characterize some graphs and weighted graphs for which we can determine the proportional edge chromatic number.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the ratio of the numbers of odd and even cycles in outerplanar graphs. We verify that the ratio generally diverges to infinity as the order of a graph diverges to infinity. We also give sharp estimations of the ratio for several classes of outerplanar graphs, and obtain a constant upper bound of the ratio for some of them. Furthermore, we consider similar problems in graphs with some pairs of forbidden subgraphs/minors, and propose a challenging problem concerning claw-free graphs.  相似文献

We consider those graphs G that admit decompositions into copies of a fixed graph F, each copy being an induced subgraph of G. We are interested in finding the extremal graphs with this property, that is, those graphs G on n vertices with the maximum possible number of edges. We discuss the cases where F is a complete equipartite graph, a cycle, a star, or a graph on at most four vertices.  相似文献

A topology on the vertex set of a comparability graph G is said to be compatible (respectively, weakly compatible) with G if each induced subgraph (respectively, each finite induced subgraph) is topologically connected if and only it it is graph-connected; a weakly compatible topology on the vertex set of a graph completely determines the graph structure. We consider here the problem of deciding whether or not a comparability graph has a compact compatible or weakly compatible topology and in the case of graphs with small cycles, hence in the case of trees, we give a characterization.  相似文献

An efficient dominating set (or perfect code) in a graph is a set of vertices the closed neighborhoods of which partition the graph's vertex set. We introduce graphs that are hereditary efficiently dominatable in that sense that every induced subgraph of the graph contains an efficient dominating set. We prove a decomposition theorem for (bull, fork, C4)‐free graphs, based on which we characterize, in terms of forbidden induced subgraphs, the class of hereditary efficiently dominatable graphs. We also give a decomposition theorem for hereditary efficiently dominatable graphs and examine some algorithmic aspects of such graphs. In particular, we give a polynomial time algorithm for finding an efficient dominating set (if one exists) in a class of graphs properly containing the class of hereditary efficiently dominatable graphs by reducing the problem to the maximum weight independent set problem in claw‐free graphs.  相似文献

We consider the problem of sampling from the uniform distribution on the set of Eulerian orientations of subgraphs of the triangular lattice. Although Mihail and Winkler (1989) showed that this can be achieved in polynomial time for any graph, the algorithm studied here is more natural in the context of planar Eulerian graphs. We analyse the mixing time of a Markov chain on the Eulerian orientations of a planar graph which moves between orientations by reversing the edges of directed faces. Using path coupling and the comparison method we obtain a polynomial upper bound on the mixing time of this chain for any solid subgraph of the triangular lattice. By considering the conductance of the chain we show that there exist non-solid subgraphs (subgraphs with holes) for which the chain will always take an exponential amount of time to converge. Finally, we show that the problem of counting Eulerian orientations remains #P-complete when restricted to planar graphs (Mihail and Winkler had already established this for general graphs).  相似文献

In this paper, we study homomorphisms of 2-edge-colored graphs, that is graphs with edges colored with two colors. We consider various graph classes (outerplanar graphs, partial 2-trees, partial 3-trees, planar graphs) and the problem is to find, for each class, the smallest number of vertices of a 2-edge-colored graph H such that each graph of the considered class admits a homomorphism to H.  相似文献

G , H, and lists , a list homomorphism of G to H with respect to the lists L is a mapping , such that for all , and for all . The list homomorphism problem for a fixed graph H asks whether or not an input graph G together with lists , , admits a list homomorphism with respect to L. We have introduced the list homomorphism problem in an earlier paper, and proved there that for reflexive graphs H (that is, for graphs H in which every vertex has a loop), the problem is polynomial time solvable if H is an interval graph, and is NP-complete otherwise. Here we consider graphs H without loops, and find that the problem is closely related to circular arc graphs. We show that the list homomorphism problem is polynomial time solvable if the complement of H is a circular arc graph of clique covering number two, and is NP-complete otherwise. For the purposes of the proof we give a new characterization of circular arc graphs of clique covering number two, by the absence of a structure analogous to Gallai's asteroids. Both results point to a surprising similarity between interval graphs and the complements of circular arc graphs of clique covering number two.
