The Bayesian paradigm with proper priors can be extended either to improper distributions or to finitely additive probabilities (FAPs). Improper distributions and diffuse FAPs can be seen as limits of proper distribution sequences for specific convergence modes. In this paper, we compare these two kinds of limits. We show that improper distributions and FAPs represent two distinct features of the limit behavior of a sequence of proper distribution. More specifically, an improper distribution characterizes the behavior of the sequence inside the domain, whereas diffuse FAPs characterizes how the mass concentrates on the boundary of the domain. Therefore, a diffuse FAP cannot be seen as the counterpart of an improper distribution. As an illustration, we consider several approach to define uniform FAP distributions on natural numbers as an equivalent of improper flat prior. We also show that expected logarithmic convergence may depend on the chosen sequence of compact sets.

This article communicates findings from a year-long constructivist teaching experiment about the relationship between four sixth-grade students’ multiplicative structures and their construction of improper fractions. Students’ multiplicative structures are the units coordinations that they can take as given prior to activity—i.e., the units coordinations that they have interiorized. This research indicates that the construction of improper fractions requires having interiorized three levels of units. Students who have interiorized only two levels of units may operate with fractions greater than one, but they don’t produce improper fractions. These findings call for a revision in Steffe's hypothesis (Steffe, L. P. (2002). A new hypothesis concerning children's fractional knowledge. Journal of Mathematical Behavior, 20, 267-307) that upon the construction of the splitting operation, students’ fractional schemes can be regarded as essentially including improper fractions. While the splitting operation seems crucial in the construction of improper fractions, it is not necessarily accompanied by the interiorization of three levels of units.  相似文献

We give a conformal representation for indefinite improper affine spheres which solve the Cauchy problem for their Hessian equation. As consequences, we can characterize their geodesics and obtain a generalized symmetry principle. Then, we classify the helicoidal indefinite improper affine spheres and find a new family with geodesically complete non-flat affine metric. Abstract

The members of a set of conditional probability density functions are called compatible if there exists a joint probability density function that generates them. We generalize this concept by calling the conditionals functionally compatible if there exists a non-negative function that behaves like a joint density as far as generating the conditionals according to the probability calculus, but whose integral over the whole space is not necessarily finite. A necessary and sufficient condition for functional compatibility is given that provides a method of calculating this function, if it exists. A Markov transition function is then constructed using a set of functionally compatible conditional densities and it is shown, using the compatibility results, that the associated Markov chain is positive recurrent if and only if the conditionals are compatible. A Gibbs Markov chain, constructed via “Gibbs conditionals” from a hierarchical model with an improper posterior, is a special case. Therefore, the results of this article can be used to evaluate the consequences of applying the Gibbs sampler when the posterior's impropriety is unknown to the user. Our results cannot, however, be used to detect improper posteriors. Monte Carlo approximations based on Gibbs chains are shown to have undesirable limiting behavior when the posterior is improper. The results are applied to a Bayesian hierarchical one-way random effects model with an improper posterior distribution. The model is simple, but also quite similar to some models with improper posteriors that have been used in conjunction with the Gibbs sampler in the literature.  相似文献

Abstract

In this article we examine the use of Gibbs sampling to estimate the autocorrelation coefficient in a linear regression model. Researchers had previously experienced difficulty with moderate-to-high positive autocorrelated errors; estimates could be unstable and sometimes failed to converge. We show that the cause of this problem is that the use of an improper prior leads to an improper posterior, although the conditionals are proper, and hence a formal Gibbs sampler can be constructed. The problem is solved by the use of a vague but proper prior. In this simple case many of the calculations can be done analytically and it serves as a warning as to the uncritical use of improper priors with Gibbs sampling.  相似文献
