   Abstract. For a region X in the plane, we denote by area(X) the area of X and by ℓ (∂ (X)) the length of the boundary of X . Let S be a convex set in the plane, let n ≥ 2 be an integer, and let α 1 , α 2 , . . . ,α n be positive real numbers such that α 1 2 + ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ +α n =1 and 0< α i ≤ 1/2 for all 1 ≤ i ≤ n . Then we shall show that S can be partitioned into n disjoint convex subsets T 1 , T 2 , . . . ,T n so that each T i satisfies the following three conditions: (i) area(T i )=α i × area(S) ; (ii) ℓ (T i ∩ ∂ (S))= α i × ℓ (∂ (S)) ; and (iii) T i ∩ ∂ (S) consists of exactly one continuous curve.  相似文献

Let X be a normed space that satisfies the Johnson–Lindenstrauss lemma (J–L lemma, in short) in the sense that for any integer n and any x 1,…,x n X, there exists a linear mapping L:XF, where FX is a linear subspace of dimension O(log n), such that ‖x i x j ‖≤‖L(x i )−L(x j )‖≤O(1)⋅‖x i x j ‖ for all i,j∈{1,…,n}. We show that this implies that X is almost Euclidean in the following sense: Every n-dimensional subspace of X embeds into Hilbert space with distortion 22O(log*n)2^{2^{O(\log^{*}n)}} . On the other hand, we show that there exists a normed space Y which satisfies the J–L lemma, but for every n, there exists an n-dimensional subspace E n Y whose Euclidean distortion is at least 2Ω(α(n)), where α is the inverse Ackermann function.  相似文献

Let X be a smooth projective variety of dimension n over an algebraically closed field k with char(k)=p>0 and F:XX 1 be the relative Frobenius morphism. For any vector bundle W on X, we prove that instability of F * W is bounded by instability of W⊗T1 X ) (0≤ℓ≤n(p-1)) (Corollary 4.9). Let Tn be the full transformation semigroup on the n-element set Xn. For an arbitrary integer r such that 2 ≤ r ≤ n-1, we completely describe the maximal subsemigroups of the semigroup K(n, r) = {α∈Tn : |im α| ≤ r}. We also formulate the cardinal number of such subsemigroups which is an answer to Problem 46 of Tetrad in 1969, concerning the number of subsemigroups of Tn.  相似文献

Let X be an infinite-dimensional Banach space with weight τ. By Cld AW (X), we denote the hyperspace of nonempty closed sets in X with the Attouch—Wets topology. By Fin AW (X), Comp AW (X) and Bdd AW (X), we denote the subspaces of Cld AW (X) consisting of finite sets, compact sets and bounded closed sets, respectively. Coefficient estimates, extreme points, distortion properties, etc. are determined for the class E T (φ,ψ;α,β) in the case where the second coefficient is fixed. Bárány, Hubard, and Jerónimo recently showed that for given well-separated convex bodies S 1,…,S d in R d and constants β i ∈[0,1], there exists a unique hyperplane h with the property that Vol (h +S i )=β i ⋅Vol (S i ); h + is the closed positive transversal halfspace of h, and h is a “generalized ham-sandwich cut.” We give a discrete analogue for a set S of n points in R d which are partitioned into a family S=P 1⋅⋅⋅P d of well-separated sets and are in weak general position. The combinatorial proof inspires an O(n(log n) d−3) algorithm which, given positive integers a i ≤|P i |, finds the unique hyperplane h incident with a point in each P i and having |h +P i |=a i . Finally we show two other consequences of the direct combinatorial proof: the first is a stronger result, namely that in the discrete case, the conditions assuring existence and uniqueness of generalized cuts are also necessary; the second is an alternative and simpler proof of the theorem in Bárány et al., and in addition, we strengthen the result via a partial converse.  相似文献

Neumaier and Seidel (1988) generalized the concept of spherical designs and defined Euclidean designs in ℝ n . For an integer t, a finite subset X of ℝ n given together with a weight function w is a Euclidean t-design if holds for any polynomial f(x) of deg(f)≤ t, where {S i , 1≤ ip} is the set of all the concentric spheres centered at the origin that intersect with X, X i = XS i , and w:X→ ℝ> 0. (The case of XS n−1 with w≡ 1 on X corresponds to a spherical t-design.) In this paper we study antipodal Euclidean (2e+1)-designs. We give some new examples of antipodal Euclidean tight 5-designs. We also give the classification of all antipodal Euclidean tight 3-designs, the classification of antipodal Euclidean tight 5-designs supported by 2 concentric spheres.  相似文献

We here prove that if k is even and e(Xi)≤2k−1 (i=1,2), then there exist paths P1 and P2 such that Pi joins si and ti, V(Pi)⊆Xi (i=1,2) and GE(P1P2) is (k−2)-edge-connected (for odd k, if e(X1)≤2k−2 and e(X2)≤2k−1, then the same result holds [10]), and we give a generalization of this result and some other results about paths not containing given edges.  相似文献

Let S⊂ℝ k+m be a compact semi-algebraic set defined by P 1≥0,…,P ≥0, where P i ∈ℝ[X 1,…,X k ,Y 1,…,Y m ], and deg (P i )≤2, 1≤i. Let π denote the standard projection from ℝ k+m onto ℝ m . We prove that for any q>0, the sum of the first q Betti numbers of π(S) is bounded by (k+m) O(q ). We also present an algorithm for computing the first q Betti numbers of π(S), whose complexity is .   (BB) m : Let (x, y, z) be a triple of vertices with ∂ Γ (x, y) = 1 and ∂ Γ (x, z) = ∂ Γ (y, z)  =  m. Then B(x, z) = B(y, z).
  (CA) m : Let (x, y, z) be a triple of vertices with ∂ Γ (x, y) = 2, ∂ Γ (x, z) = ∂ Γ (y, z) = m and |C(z, x) ∩ C(z, y)| ≥ 2. Then C(x, z) ∪ A(x, z) = C(y, z) ∪ A(y, z).
Suppose that the condition (SC) m holds. Then it has been known that the condition (BB) i holds for all i with 1 ≤ im. Similarly we can show that the condition (CA) i holds for all i with 1 ≤ im. In this paper we prove that if the conditions (BB) i and (CA) i hold for all i with 1 ≤ im, then the condition (SC) m holds. Applying this result we give a sufficient condition for the existence of a dual polar graph as a strongly closed subgraph in Γ.  相似文献

We study the setP X of scalarsp such thatL p is lattice-isomorphically embedded into a given rearrangement invariant (r.i.) function spaceX[0, 1]. Given 0<αβ<∞, we construct a family of Orlicz function spacesX=L F [0, 1], with Boyd indicesα andβ, whose associated setsP X are the closed intervals [γ, β], for everyγ withαγβ. In particular forα>2, this proves the existence of separable 2-convex r.i. function spaces on [0,1] containing isomorphically scales ofL p -spaces for different values ofp. We also show that, in general, the associated setP X is not closed. Similar questions in the setting of Banach spaces with uncountable symmetric basis are also considered. Thus, we construct a family of Orlicz spaces ℓ F (I), with symmetric basis and indices fixed in advance, containing ℓ p (Γ-subspaces for differentp’s and uncountable Λ⊂I. In contrast with the behavior in the countable case (Lindenstrauss and Tzafriri [L-T1]), we show that the set of scalarsp for which ℓ p (Γ) is isomorphic to a subspace of a given Orlicz space ℓ F (I) is not in general closed. A well known argument of James yields that if a Banach spaceX contains ℓ 1 n ’s uniformly, thenX contains ℓ 1 n ’s almost isometrically. In the first half of the paper we extend this idea to the ordinal ℓ1-indices of Bourgain. In the second half we use our results to calculate the ℓ1-index of certain Banach spaces. Furthermore we show that the ℓ1-index of a separable Banach space not containing ℓ1 must be of the form ωα for some countable ordinal α. Research supported by the NSF and TARP.  相似文献

In the Euclidean plane, decompose a convex body T into n\geq 2 convex bodies T 1 ,\ldots ,T n with areas also denoted by T 1 ,\ldots ,T n , and with perimeters L 1 ,\ldots ,L n . For T a polygon with at most six sides, G. Fejes Tóth and also L. Fejes Tóth showed that the isoperimetric quotient (L 1 + ⋅s + L n )/(\sqrt T 1 + ⋅s + \sqrt T n ) is greater than the corresponding isoperimetric quotient of a regular hexagon if T i /T j for any i, j is bounded from below by some appropriate constant. We generalize this result to any convex body T , and we show the analogous result for the isoperimetric quotient (L 2 1 + ⋅s + L 2 n )/(T 1 + ⋅s + T n ) .
