To apply surgery theory to the problem of classifying pairs of closed manifolds, it is necessary to know the subgroup of the group LP* generated by those elements which are realized by normal maps to a pair of closed manifolds. This closely relates to the surgery problem for a closed manifold and to the computation of the assembly map. In this paper we completely determine such subgroups for many cases of Browder-Livesay pairs of closed manifolds. Moreover, very explicit results are obtained in the case of an elementary fundamental group. Then we generalize them, and obtain several further results about the realization of elements in the Browder-Quinn surgery obstruction groups by means of normal maps to a closed manifold filtered by closed submanifolds. Let Y be a compact nonsingular real algebraic set whose homology classes (over Z/2) are represented by Zariski closed subsets. It is well known that every smooth map from a compact smooth manifold to Y is unoriented bordant to a regular map. In this paper, we show how to construct smooth maps from compact nonsingular real algebraic sets to Y not homotopic to any regular map starting from a nonzero homology class of Y of positive degree. We use these maps to obtain obstructions to the existence of local algebraic tubular neighborhoods of algebraic submanifolds of Rn and to study some algebro-homological properties of rational real algebraic manifolds.  相似文献

In this paper we give some results on the topology of manifolds with ∞-Bakry–Émery Ricci tensor bounded below, and in particular of steady and expanding gradient Ricci solitons. To this aim we clarify and further develop the theory of f-harmonic maps from non-compact manifolds into non-positively curved manifolds. Notably, we prove existence and vanishing results which generalize to the weighted setting part of Schoen and Yau?s theory of harmonic maps.  相似文献

One-vertex maps (a type of dessin d’enfant) give a uniform characterization of certain well-known algebraic curves, including those of Klein, Wiman, Accola–Maclachlan and Kulkarni. The characterization depends on a new classification of one-vertex (dually, one-face or unicellular) maps according to the size of the group of map automorphisms. We use an equivalence relation appropriate for studying the faithful action of the absolute Galois group on dessins, although we do not pursue that line of inquiry here.  相似文献

We construct Gauss–Weingarten-like formulas and define O’Neill’s tensors for Riemannian maps between Riemannian manifolds. By using these new formulas, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for Riemannian maps to be totally geodesic. Then we introduce semi-invariant Riemannian maps from almost Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, give examples and investigate the geometry of leaves of the distributions defined by such maps. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for semi-invariant maps to be totally geodesic and find decomposition theorems for the total manifold. Finally, we give a classification result for semi-invariant Riemannian maps with totally umbilical fibers.  相似文献

First, we generalize a rigidity result for harmonic maps of Gordon (Gordon (1972) Proc AM Math Soc 33: 433–437) to generalized pluriharmonic maps. We give the construction of generalized pluriharmonic maps from metric tt *-bundles over nearly Kähler manifolds. An application of the last two results is that any metric tt *-bundle over a compact nearly Kähler manifold is trivial (Theorem A). This result we apply to special Kähler manifolds to show that any compact special Kähler manifold is trivial. This is Lu’s theorem (Lu (1999) Math Ann 313: 711–713) for the case of compact special Kähler manifolds. Further we introduce harmonic bundles over nearly Kähler manifolds and study the implications of Theorem A for tt *-bundles coming from harmonic bundles over nearly Kähler manifolds.  相似文献

We study the homotopy type of finite-oriented Poincaré spaces (and, in particular, of closed topological manifolds) in even dimension. Our results relate polarized homotopy types over a stage of the Postnikov tower with the concept of CW-tower of categories due to Baues. This fact allows us to obtain a new formula for the top-dimensional obstruction for extending maps to homotopy equivalences. Then we complete the paper with an algebraic characterization of high-dimensional handlebodies. Received: April 14, 1999?Published online: October 2, 2001  相似文献

We consider actions of reductive complex Lie groups \({G=K^\mathbb{C}}\) on Kähler manifolds X such that the K-action is Hamiltonian and prove then that the closures of the G-orbits are complex-analytic in X. This is used to characterize reductive homogeneous Kähler manifolds in terms of their isotropy subgroups. Moreover we show that such manifolds admit K-moment maps if and only if their isotropy groups are algebraic.  相似文献

Stable maps into the plane are good tools to obtain “views” of higher dimensional manifolds. We introduce the planar portraits to define the “view” properly. To start studying their relation to manifolds, we restrict our attention to their basic piece called the cusped fan. Fibreing structures over the cusped fan are studied and given a geometric characterisation. As by-products, we supply various stable maps and planar portraits of closed manifolds. In particular, two infiniteness properties of planar portraits are shown by using these examples.  相似文献

The Isomorphism Conjecture is a conceptional approach towards a calculation of the algebraic K-theory of a group ring , where Γ is an infinite group. In this paper we prove the conjecture in dimensions n<2 for fundamental groups of closed Riemannian manifolds with strictly negative sectional curvature and arbitrary coefficient rings R. If R is regular this leads to a concrete calculation of low dimensional K-theory groups of in terms of the K-theory of R and the homology of the group.  相似文献

The classical approach to maps is by cell decomposition of a surface. A combinatorial map is a graph-theoretic generalization of a map on a surface. Besides maps on orientable and non-orientable surfaces, combinatorial maps include tessellations, hypermaps, higher dimensional analogues of maps, and certain toroidal complexes of Coxeter, Shephard, and Grünbaum. In a previous paper the incidence structure, diagram, and underlying topological space of a combinatorial map were investigated. This paper treats highly symmetric combinatorial maps. With regularity defined in terms of the automorphism group, necessary and sufficient conditions for a combinatorial map to be regular are given both graph- and group-theoretically. A classification of regular combinatorial maps on closed simply connected manifolds generalizes the well-known classification of metrically regular polytopes. On any closed manifold with nonzero Euler characteristic there are at most finitely many regular combinatorial maps. However, it is shown that, for nearly any diagram D, there are infinitely many regular combinatorial maps with diagram D. A necessary and sufficient condition for the regularity of rank 3 combinatorial maps is given in terms of Coxeter groups. This condition reveals the difficulty in classifying the regular maps on surfaces. In light of this difficulty an algorithm for generating a large class of regular combinatorial maps that are obtained as cyclic coverings of a given regular combinatorial map is given.  相似文献

We obtain real analytic invariant manifolds for trajectories of maps assuming only the existence of a nonuniform exponential behavior. We also consider the more general case of sequences of maps, which corresponds to a nonautonomous dynamics with discrete time. We emphasize that the maps that we consider are defined in a real Euclidean space, and thus, one is not able to obtain the invariant manifolds from a corresponding procedure to that in the nonuniform hyperbolicity theory in the context of holomorphic dynamics. We establish the existence both of stable (and unstable) manifolds and of center manifolds. As a byproduct of our approach we obtain an exponential control not only for the trajectories on the invariant manifolds, but also for all their derivatives.  相似文献

We introduce the concept of pseudo symplectic capacities which is a mild generalization of that of symplectic capacities. As a generalization of the Hofer-Zehnder capacity we construct a Hofer-Zehnder type pseudo symplectic capacity and estimate it in terms of Gromov-Witten invariants. The (pseudo) symplectic capacities of Grassmannians and some product symplectic manifolds are computed. As applications we first derive some general nonsqueezing theorems that generalize and unite many previous versions then prove the Weinstein conjecture for cotangent bundles over a large class of symplectic uniruled manifolds (including the uniruled manifolds in algebraic geometry) and also show that any closed symplectic submanifold of codimension two in any symplectic manifold has a small neighborhood whose Hofer-Zehnder capacity is less than a given positive number. Finally, we give two results on symplectic packings in Grassmannians and on Seshadri constants. In this paper we work in an arbitrary o-minimal structure with definable Skolem functions and prove that definably connected, locally definable manifolds are uniformly definably path connected, have an admissible cover by definably simply connected, open definable subsets and, definable paths and definable homotopies on such locally definable manifolds can be lifted to locally definable covering maps. These properties allow us to obtain the main properties of the general o-minimal fundamental group, including: invariance and comparison results; existence of universal locally definable covering maps; monodromy equivalence for locally constant o-minimal sheaves – from which one obtains, as in algebraic topology, classification results for locally definable covering maps, o-minimal Hurewicz and Seifert–van Kampen theorems.  相似文献

In the first part of the paper we give a construction of a topological degree theory for set-valued tangent vector fields with convex and nonconvex values defined on nonsmooth closed subsets of a Banach space. The obtained homotopy invariant is an extension of the classical degree for vector fields on manifolds. In the second part we propose a fixed-point index for inward maps on arbitrary closed convex sets.  相似文献

In this paper we connect algebraic properties of the pair-of-pants product in local Floer homology and Hamiltonian dynamics. We show that for an isolated periodic orbit, the product is non-uniformly nilpotent and use this fact to give a simple proof of the Conley conjecture for closed manifolds with aspherical symplectic form. More precisely, we prove that on a closed symplectic manifold, the mean action spectrum of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism with isolated periodic orbits is infinite.  相似文献

A flat complete causal Lorentzian manifold is called strictly causal if the past and future of its every point are closed near this point. We consider the strictly causal manifolds with unipotent holonomy groups and assign to a manifold of this type four nonnegative integers (a signature) and a parabola in the cone of positive definite matrices. Two manifolds are equivalent if and only if their signatures coincide and the corresponding parabolas are equal (up to a suitable automorphism of the cone and an affine change of variable). Also, we give necessary and sufficient conditions distinguishing the parabolas of this type among all parabolas in the cone.  相似文献

We give an axiomatic characterization of maps from algebraic K-theory. The results apply to a large class of maps from algebraic K-theory to any suitable cohomology theory or to algebraic K-theory. In particular, we obtain comparison theorems for the Chern character and Chern classes and for the Adams operations and λ-operations on higher algebraic K-theory. We show that the Adams operations and λ-operations defined by Grayson agree with the ones defined by Gillet and Soulé.  相似文献
