It has recently been shown that infinite matroids can be axiomatized in a way that is very similar to finite matroids and permits duality. This was previously thought impossible, since finitary infinite matroids must have non-finitary duals. In this paper we illustrate the new theory by exhibiting its implications for the cycle and bond matroids of infinite graphs. We also describe their algebraic cycle matroids, those whose circuits are the finite cycles and double rays, and determine their duals. Finally, we give a sufficient condition for a matroid to be representable in a sense adapted to infinite matroids. Which graphic matroids are representable in this sense remains an open question.  相似文献

Frame matroids and lifted‐graphic matroids are two interesting generalizations of graphic matroids. Here, we introduce a new generalization, quasi‐graphic matroids, that unifies these two existing classes. Unlike frame matroids and lifted‐graphic matroids, it is easy to certify that a 3‐connected matroid is quasi‐graphic. The main result is that every 3‐connected representable quasi‐graphic matroid is either a lifted‐graphic matroid or a frame matroid.  相似文献

A new matroid decomposition with several attractive properties leads to a new theorem of alternatives for matroids. A strengthened version of this theorem for binary matroids says roughly that to any binary matroid at least one of the following statements must apply: (1) the matroid is decomposable, (2) several elements can be removed (in any order) without destroying 3-connectivity, (3) the matroid belongs to one of 2 well-specified classes or has 10 elements or less. The latter theorem is easily specialized to graphic matroids. These theorems seem particularly useful for the determination of minimal violation matroids, a subject discussed in part II.  相似文献

perturbability function of a matroid measures the maximum increase in the weight of its minimum weight bases that can be produced by increases of a given total cost on the weights of its elements. We present an algorithm for computing this function that runs in strongly polynomial time for matroids in which independence can be tested in strongly polynomial time. Furthermore, for the case of transversal matroids we are able to take advantage of their special structure to design a faster algorithm for computing the perturbability function. We prove that, for a fixed bipartite circle graph H, all line graphs with sufficiently large rank‐width (or clique‐width) must have a pivot‐minor isomorphic to H. To prove this, we introduce graphic delta‐matroids. Graphic delta‐matroids are minors of delta‐matroids of line graphs and they generalize graphic and cographic matroids. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 60: 183–203, 2009  相似文献

We determine the inseparability graphs of uniform oriented matroids and of graphic oriented matroids. For anyr, n such that 4rn–3, examples of rankr uniform oriented matroids onn elements with a given inseparability graph are obtained by simple constructions of polytopes having prescribed separation properties.  相似文献

In this paper we present a relatively simple proof of Tutt's characterization of graphic matroids. The proof uses the notion of ‘signed graph’ and it is ‘graphic’ in the sense that it can be presented almost entirely by drawing (signed) graphs. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In an earlier paper we proved the following theorem, which provides a strengthening of Tutte's well-known characterization of regular (totally unimodular) matroids: A binary matroid is regular if it does not have the Fano matroid or its dual as a series-minor (parallel-minor). In this paper we prove two theorems (Theorems 5.1 and 6.1) which provide the same kind of strengthening for Tutte's characterization of the graphic matroids (i.e., bond-matroids). One interesting aspect of these theorems is the introduction of the matroids of “type R”. It turns out that these matroids are, in at least two different senses, the smallest regular matroids which are neither graphic nor cographic (Theorems 6.2 and 6.3).  相似文献

Following an “ansatz” of Björner and Ziegler [BZ], we give an axiomatic development of finite sign vector systems that we callcomplex matroids. This includes, as special cases, the sign vector systems that encode complex arrangements according to [BZ], and the complexified oriented matroids, whose complements were considered by Gel'fand and Rybnikov [GeR]. Our framework makes it possible to study complex hyperplane arrangements as entirely combinatorial objects. By comparing complex matroids with 2-matroids, which model the more general 2-arrangements introduced by Goresky and MacPherson [GoM], the essential combinatorial meaning of a “complex structure” can be isolated. Our development features a topological representation theorem for 2-matroids and complex matroids, and the computation of the cohomology of the complement of a 2-arrangement, including its multiplicative structure in the complex case. Duality is established in the cases of complexified oriented matroids, and for realizable complex matroids. Complexified oriented matroids are shown to be matroids with coefficients in the sense of Dress and Wenzel [D1], [DW1], but this fails in general.  相似文献

It is proved that every regular matroid may be constructed by piecing together graphic and cographic matroids and copies of a certain 10-element matroid.  相似文献

The matroid matching problem (also known as matroid parity problem) has been intensively studied by several authors. Starting from very special problems, in particular the matching problem and the matroid intersection problem, good characterizations have been obtained for more and more general classes of matroids. The two most recent ones are the class of representable matroids and, later on, the class of algebraic matroids (cf. [4] and [2]). We present a further step of generalization, showing that a good characterization can also be obtained for the class of socalled pseudomodular matroids, introduced by Björner and Lovász (cf. [1]). A small counterexample is included to show that pseudomodularity still does not cover all matroids that behave well with respect to matroid matching.Supported by the German Research Association (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, SFB 303).  相似文献

A well‐known result of Tutte states that a 3‐connected graph G is planar if and only if every edge of G is contained in exactly two induced non‐separating circuits. Bixby and Cunningham generalized Tutte's result to binary matroids. We generalize both of these results and give new characterizations of both 3‐connected planar graphs and 3‐connected graphic matroids. Our main result determines when a natural necessary condition for a binary matroid to be graphic is also sufficient. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Graph Theory 64: 165–174, 2010  相似文献

Covering-based rough sets,as a technique of granular computing, can be a useful tool for dealing with inexact, uncertain or vague knowledge in information systems.Matroids generalize linear independence in vector spaces, graph theory and provide well established platforms for greedy algorithm design. In this paper,we construct three types of matroidal structures of covering-based rough sets. Moreover, through these three types of matroids,we study the relationships among these matroids induced by six types of covering-based upper approximation operators.First,we construct three families of sets by indiscernible neighborhoods, neighborhoods and close friends, respectively. Moreover,we prove that they satisfy independent set axioms of matroids. In this way, three types of matroidal structures of covering-based rough sets are constructed.Secondly,we study some characteristics of the three types of matroid, such as dependent sets, circuits, rank function and closure. Finally,by comparing independent sets,we study relationships among these matroids induced by six types of covering-based upper approximation operators.  相似文献

Two combinatorial structures which describe the branchings in a graph are graphic matroids and undirected branching greedoids. We introduce a new class of greedoids which connects these two structures. We also apply these greedoids to directed graphs to consider a matroid defined on a directed graph. Finally, we obtain a formula for the greedoid characteristic polynomial for multiply-rooted directed trees which can be determined from the vertices.  相似文献

Consider a matroid where each element has a real-valued cost and a color, red or green; a base is sought that contains q red elements and has smallest possible cost. An algorithm for the problem on general matroids is presented, along with a number of variations. Its efficiency is demonstrated by implementations on specific matroids. In all cases but one, the running time matches the best-known algorithm for the problem without the red element constraint: On graphic matroids, a smallest spanning tree with q red edges can be found in time O(n log n) more than what is needed to find a minimum spanning tree. A special case is finding a smallest spanning tree with a degree constraint; here the time is only O(m + n) more than that needed to find one minimum spanning tree. On transversal and matching matroids, the time is the same as the best-known algorithms for a minimum cost base. This also holds for transversal matroids for convex graphs, which model a scheduling problem on unit-length jobs with release times and deadlines. On partition matroids, a linear-time algorithm is presented. Finally an algorithm related to our general approach finds a smallest spanning tree on a directed graph, where the given root has a degree constraint. Again the time matches the best-known algorithm for the problem without the red element (i.e., degree) constraint.  相似文献

This article studies the girth and cogirth problems for a connected matroid. The problem of finding the cogirth of a graphic matroid has been intensively studied, but studies on the equivalent problem for a vector matroid or a general matroid have been rarely reported. Based on the duality and connectivity of a matroid, we prove properties associated with the girth and cogirth of a matroid whose contraction or restriction is disconnected. Then, we devise algorithms that find the cogirth of a matroid M from the matroids associated with the direct sum components of the restriction of M. As a result, the problem of finding the (co)girth of a matroid can be decomposed into a set of smaller sub-problems, which helps alleviate the computation. Finally, we implement and demonstrate the application of our algorithms to vector matroids.  相似文献

Elementary strong maps of graphic matroids are described in terms of the graph only. An application to rigidity of special bar and joint frameworks is also mentioned.  相似文献

Describing minimal generating sets of toric ideals is a well-studied and difficult problem. Neil White conjectured in 1980 that the toric ideal associated to a matroid is generated by quadrics corresponding to single element symmetric exchanges. We give a combinatorial proof of White’s conjecture for graphic matroids.  相似文献

In this paper we present an algorithm for the problem of exhaustive equivalence-free generation of 3-connected matroids which are represented by a matrix over some finite (partial) field, and which contain a given minor. The nature of this problem is exponential, and it appears to be much harder than, say, isomorph-free generation of graphs. Still, our algorithm is very suitable for practical use, and it has been successfully implemented in our matroid computing package MACEK [http://www.mcs.vuw.ac.nz/research/macek, 2001-05].  相似文献
