We show that residually finite or word hyperbolic groups which can be decomposed as a finite union of double cosets of a cyclic subgroup are necessarily virtually cyclic, and we apply this result to the study of Frobenius permutation groups. We show that in general, finite double coset decompositions of a group can be interpreted as an obstruction to splitting a group as a free product with amalgamation or an HNN extension.  相似文献

For a morphism of quadratic extensions of antistructures, groups similar to the groups of obstructions to splitting along one-sided submanifolds are defined. These groups are a natural generalization of the splitting obstruction groups. The results obtained open additional possibilities for constructing groups and natural maps in L-theory.  相似文献

We study holomorphic immersions f: X → M from a complex manifold X into a Kahler manifold of constant holomorphic sectional curvature M, i.e. a complex hyperbolic space form, a complex Euclidean space form, or the complex projective space equipped with the Fubini-Study metric. For X compact we show that the tangent sequence splits holomorphically if and only if f is a totally geodesic immersion. For X not necessarily compact we relate an intrinsic cohomological invariant p(X) on X, viz. the invariant defined by Gunning measuring the obstruction to the existence of holomorphic projective connections, to an extrinsic cohomological invariant v(f)measuring the obstruction to the holomorphic splitting of the tangent sequence. The two invariants p(X) and v(f) are related by a linear map on cohomology groups induced by the second fundamental form.In some cases, especially when X is a complex surface and M is of complex dimension 4, under the assumption that X admits a holomorphic projective connection we obtain a sufficient condition for the holomorphic splitting of the tangent sequence in terms of the second fundamental form.  相似文献

In this paper we compute surgery (resp. splitting) obstruction groups, here calledL-groups, and natural maps for many diagrams of oriented finite (not necessary abelian) 2-groups and homomorphisms which preserve orientations.  相似文献

In this paper we calculate the obstruction groups to splitting along one-sided submanifolds when the fundamental group of the submanifold is isomorphic to or /2. We also consider the case where the obstruction group is not a Browder-Livesey group. We construct a new Levine braid that connects the Wall groups to the obstruction group for splitting. We solve the problem of the mutual disposition of images of several natural maps in Wall groups for finite 2-groups with exceptional orientation character.Translated fromMatematicheskie Zametki, Vol. 60, No. 2, pp. 163–175, August, 1996.This research was supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research under grant No. 93-011-1402.  相似文献

The surgery obstruction of a normal map to a simple Poincaré pair (X, Y) lies in the relative surgery obstruction group L *(π 1(Y) → π 1(X)). A well-known result of Wall, the so-called π-π-theorem, states that in higher dimensions a normal map of a manifold with boundary to a simple Poincaré pair with π 1(X) ? π 1(Y) is normally bordant to a simple homotopy equivalence of pairs. In order to study normal maps to a manifold with a submanifold, Wall introduced the surgery obstruction groups LP * for manifold pairs and splitting obstruction groups LS *. In the present paper, we formulate and prove for manifold pairs with boundary results similar to the π-π-theorem. We give direct geometric proofs, which are based on the original statements of Wall’s results and apply obtained results to investigate surgery on filtered manifolds.  相似文献

We show that if the fundamental group of a finite graph of groups with finitely generated Abelian vertex groups is subgroup separable, then it is linear.  相似文献

Necessary and sufficient conditions are established for the convergence of various iterative methods for solving the linear complementarity problem. The fundamental tool used is the classical notion of matrix splitting in numerical analysis. The results derived are similar to some well-known theorems on the convergence of iterative methods for square systems of linear equations. An application of the results to a strictly convex quadratic program is also given. This research was based on work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. ECS-81-14571.The author gratefully acknowledges several comments by K. Truemper on the topics of this paper.  相似文献

We examine asymptotic dimension and property A for groups acting on complexes. In particular, we prove that the fundamental group of a finite, developable complex of groups will have finite asymptotic dimension provided the geometric realization of the development has finite asymptotic dimension and the vertex groups are finitely generated and have finite asymptotic dimension. We also prove that property A is preserved by this construction provided the geometric realization of the development has finite asymptotic dimension and the vertex groups all have property A. These results naturally extend the corresponding results on preservation of these large-scale properties for fundamental groups of graphs of groups. We also use an example to show that the requirement that the development have finite asymptotic dimension cannot be relaxed.

The problem of splitting a homotopy equivalence along a submanifold is closely related to the surgery exact sequence and to the problem of surgery of manifold pairs. In classical surgery theory there exist two approaches to surgery in the category of manifolds with boundaries. In the rel ∂ case the surgery on a manifold pair is considered with the given fixed manifold structure on the boundary. In the relative case the surgery on the manifold with boundary is considered without fixing maps on the boundary. Consider a normal map to a manifold pair (Y, ∂Y) ⊂ (X, ∂X) with boundary which is a simple homotopy equivalence on the boundary∂X. This map defines a mixed structure on the manifold with the boundary in the sense of Wall. We introduce and study groups of obstructions to splitting of such mixed structures along submanifold with boundary (Y, ∂Y). We describe relations of these groups to classical surgery and splitting obstruction groups. We also consider several geometric examples.  相似文献

The author carries out a detailed study of p-blocks with normal metacyclic defect groups provided that p is odd and the defect groups are splitting and nonabelian. In particular, the author constructs all the irreducible ordinary and modular characters in this type of blocks. As a by-product,k(B) and l(B) are obtained.  相似文献

Using the canonical JSJ splitting, we describe the outer automorphism group Out(G) of a one-ended word hyperbolic group G. In particular, we discuss to what extent Out(G) is virtually a direct product of mapping class groups and a free abelian group, and we determine for which groups Out(G) is infinite. We also show that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of torsion elements in Out(G), for G any torsion-free hyperbolic group. More generally, let Γ be a finite graph of groups decomposition of an arbitrary group G such that edge groups Ge are rigid (i.e. Out(Ge) is finite). We describe the group of automorphisms of G preserving Γ, by comparing it to direct products of suitably defined mapping class groups of vertex groups.  相似文献

We give a characterization of the cyclic subgroup separability and weak potency of the fundamental group of a graph of polycyclic-by-finite groups and free-by-finite groups amalgamating edge subgroups of the form × D,where h has infinite order and D is finite.  相似文献

We study examples of surjective holomorphic maps between complex hyperbolic surfaces that are not covering maps. The induced homomorphisms on the fundamental groups have infinite kernel, thus are examples of the nonstandard homomorphisms found by Mostow. We also study the singularities of these maps.  相似文献

The strong embeddability is a notion of metric geometry, which is an intermediate property lying between coarse embeddability and property A. In this paper, the permanence properties of strong embeddability for groups acting on metric spaces are studied. The authors show that a finitely generated group acting on a finitely asymptotic dimension metric space by isometries whose $K$-stabilizers are strongly embeddable is strongly embeddable. Moreover, they prove that the fundamental group of a graph of groups with strongly embeddable vertex groups is also strongly embeddable.  相似文献

The geometrical properties of cyclically presented groups of Fibonacci type F(r,m, k)and H(r,m,k)are discussed. It is shown that for even rand odd m some infinite family of generalized Fibonacci groups F(r, m, k)cannot be fundamental groups of hyperbolic 3-orbifolds of finite volume.  相似文献

Let be a class of groups. The elementary class with base is defined as the minimal class of groups containing and closed with respect to taking subgroups, quotient groups, group extensions, and direct limits. Properties of such classes are studied. Some applications to the theory of elementary amenable groups and a relation to the Kurosh--Chernikov classes of generalized solvable groups are considered.  相似文献

Operator splitting is necessary in order to apply Harten's second-order accurate, total-variation-diminishing (TVD) method for shock capturing to higher-dimensional problems. Here two such splittings of the Euler equations are considered. By analytical means, one splitting is shown to be inconsistent; the other, scheme satisfies a fundamental necessary condition for consistency. Numerical results from a typical blast wave calculation employing this scheme are exhibited.  相似文献
