We study those groups that act properly discontinuously, cocompactly, and isometrically on CAT(0) spaces with isolated flats. The groups in question include word hyperbolic CAT(0) groups as well as geometrically finite Kleinian groups and numerous two-dimensional CAT(0) groups. For such a group we show that there is an intrinsic notion of a quasiconvex subgroup which is equivalent to the subgroup being undistorted. We also show that the visual boundary of the CAT(0) space is actually an invariant of the group. More generally, we show that each quasiconvex subgroup of such a group has a canonical limit set which is independent of the choice of overgroup. The main results in this article were established by Gromov and Short in the word hyperbolic setting and do not extend to arbitrary CAT(0) groups.  相似文献

We show that diagram groups can be viewed as fundamental groups of spaces of positive paths on directed 2-complexes (these spaces of paths turn out to be classifying spaces). Thus diagram groups are analogs of second homotopy groups, although diagram groups are as a rule non-Abelian. Part of the paper is a review of the previous results from this point of view. In particular, we show that the so-called rigidity of the R. Thompson's group F and some other groups is similar to the flat torus theorem. We find several finitely presented diagram groups (even of type F) each of which contains all countable diagram groups. We show how to compute minimal presentations and homology groups of a large class of diagram groups. We show that the Poincaré series of these groups are rational functions. We prove that all integer homology groups of all diagram groups are free Abelian.  相似文献

A group G   is called hereditarily non-topologizable if, for every H?GH?G, no quotient of H admits a non-discrete Hausdorff topology. We construct first examples of infinite hereditarily non-topologizable groups. This allows us to prove that c-compactness does not imply compactness for topological groups. We also answer several other open questions about c-compact groups asked by Dikranjan and Uspenskij. On the other hand, we suggest a method of constructing topologizable groups based on generic properties in the space of marked k-generated groups. As an application, we show that there exist non-discrete quasi-cyclic groups of finite exponent; this answers a question of Morris and Obraztsov.  相似文献

We prove that the exponent of the nonabelian tensor product of two locally finite groups can be bounded in terms of exponents of given groups. Several estimates for the exponents of nonabelian tensor squares are obtained. In particular, if the group G is nilpotent of class ≤3 and of finite exponent, then the exponent of its nonabelian tensor square divides the exponent of G.  相似文献

We introduce and investigate the ribbon groupoid associated with a Garside group. Under a technical hypothesis, we prove that this category is a Garside groupoid. We decompose this groupoid into a semi-direct product of two of its parabolic subgroupoids and provide a groupoid presentation. In order to establish the latter result, we describe quasi-centralizers in Garside groups. All results hold in the particular case of Artin-Tits groups of spherical type.  相似文献

For every hyperbolic group and more general hyperbolic graphs, we construct an equivariant ideal bicombing: this is a homological analogue of the geodesic flow on negatively curved manifolds. We then construct a cohomological invariant which implies that several Measure Equivalence and Orbit Equivalence rigidity results established in Monod and Shalom (Orbit equivalence rigidity and bounded cohomology, preprint, to appear) hold for all non-elementary hyperbolic groups and their non-elementary subgroups. We also derive superrigidity results for actions of general irreducible lattices on a large class of hyperbolic metric spaces.  相似文献

We construct examples of Gromov hyperbolic Coxeter groups of arbitrarily large dimension. We also extend Vinbergs theorem to show that if a Gromov hyperbolic Coxeter group is a virtual Poincaré duality group of dimension n, then n 61.Coxeter groups acting on their associated complexes have been extremely useful source of examples and insight into nonpositively curved spaces over last several years. Negatively curved (or Gromov hyperbolic) Coxeter groups were much more elusive. In particular their existence in high dimensions was in doubt. In 1987 Gabor Moussong [M] conjectured that there is a universal bound on the virtual cohomological dimension of any Gromov hyperbolic Coxeter group. This question was also raised by Misha Gromov [G] (who thought that perhaps any construction of high dimensional negatively curved spaces requires nontrivial number theory in the guise of arithmetic groups in an essential way), and by Mladen Bestvina [B2].In the present paper we show that high dimensional Gromov hyperbolic Coxeter groups do exist, and we construct them by geometric or group theoretic but not arithmetic means.  相似文献

The paper concerns the question of A. Shalev: is it true that every collapsing group satisfies a positive law? We give a positive answer for groups in a large class C, including all soluble and residually finite groups.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce the concept of the independence graph of a directed 2-complex. We show that the class of diagram groups is closed under graph products over independence graphs of rooted 2-trees. This allows us to show that a diagram group containing all countable diagram groups is a semi-direct product of a partially commutative group and R. Thompson's group F. As a result, we prove that all diagram groups are totally orderable.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper is devoted to the study of groups with the property that the Frattini factor group is a T-group, i.e. a group in which every subnormal subgroup is normal. We give necessary and suffucient conditions for a direct product G = H x K of finite groups H and K to have such a property. Some structure theorems are also discussed.  相似文献

It is shown that square free set theoretic involutive non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation whose associated permutation group (referred to as an involutive Yang-Baxter group) is abelian are retractable in the sense of Etingof, Schedler and Soloviev. This solves a problem of Gateva-Ivanova in the case of abelian IYB groups. It also implies that the corresponding finitely presented abelian-by-finite groups (called the structure groups) are poly-Z groups. Secondly, an example of a solution with an abelian involutive Yang-Baxter group which is not a generalized twisted union is constructed. This answers in the negative another problem of Gateva-Ivanova. The constructed solution is of multipermutation level 3. Retractability of solutions is also proved in the case where the natural generators of the IYB group are cyclic permutations. Moreover, it is shown that such solutions are generalized twisted unions.  相似文献

We give another proof for a result of Brick ([2]) stating that the simple connectivity at infinity is a geometric property of finitely presented groups. This allows us to define the rate of vanishing of $\pi^{\infty}_{1}$ for those groups which are simply connected at infinity. Further we show that this rate is linear for cocompact lattices in nilpotent and semi-simple Lie groups, and in particular for fundamental groups of geometric 3-manifolds. We study the minimal length elements in some double cosets of Coxeter groups and use them to study Lusztig's G-stable pieces and the generalization of G-stable pieces introduced by Lu and Yakimov. We also use them to study the minimal length elements in a conjugacy class of a finite Coxeter group and prove a conjecture in [M. Geck, S. Kim, G. Pfeiffer, Minimal length elements in twisted conjugacy classes of finite Coxeter groups, J. Algebra 229 (2) (2000) 570-600].  相似文献

In this paper we introduce the concept of Baer-invariant of a pair of groups with respect to a variety of groups v. Some inequalities for the Baer-invariant of a pair of finite groups are obtained, when v is considered to be the Schur-Baer variety. We also present a condition for which the order of the Baerinvariant of a pair of finite groups divides the order of the Baer-invariant of their factor groups. Finally, some inequalities for the Schur-multiplier of a pair of finite nilpotent groups and their factor groups are given.  相似文献

In this paper we study the concept of -isologisms among the -marginal extensions of groups, with respect to a given variety of groups . We also give some equivalent conditions under which two extensions are -isologic. Received: 9 January 2002  相似文献

We study the coarse Baum–Connes conjecture for product spaces and product groups. We show that a product of CAT(0) groups, polycyclic groups and relatively hyperbolic groups which satisfy some assumptions on peripheral subgroups, satisfies the coarse Baum–Connes conjecture. For this purpose, we construct and analyze an appropriate compactification and its boundary, “corona”, of a product of proper metric spaces.  相似文献

Like the lower central series of a nilpotent group, filters generalize the connection between nilpotent groups and graded Lie rings. However, unlike the case with the lower central series, the associated graded Lie ring may share few features with the original group: e.g. the associated Lie ring can be trivial or arbitrarily large. We determine properties of filters such that every isomorphism between groups is induced by an isomorphism between graded Lie rings.  相似文献

The terms of the upper and lower central series of a nilpotent computable group have computably enumerable Turing degree. We show that the Turing degrees of these terms are independent even when restricted to groups which admit computable orders.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a construction of generic character sheaves on reductive groups over finite local rings at even levels, whose characteristic functions are higher Deligne–Lusztig characters when the parameters are generic. We formulate a conjecture on the simple perversity of these complexes, and we prove it in the level two case (thus extend a result of Lusztig from the function field case). We then discuss the induction and restriction functors, as well as the Frobenius reciprocity, based on the perversity.  相似文献
