An analysis has been carried out to study the magnetohydrodynamic boundary layer flow and heat transfer characteristics of a non-Newtonian viscoelastic fluid over a flat sheet with a linear velocity in the presence of thermal radiation and non-uniform heat source. The thermal conductivity is assumed to vary as a linear function of temperature. The basic equations governing the flow and heat transfer are in the form of partial differential equations, the same have been reduced to a set of non-linear ordinary differential equations by applying suitable similarity transformation. The transformed equations are solved analytically by regular perturbation method. Numerical solution of the problem is also obtained by the efficient shooting method, which agrees well with the analytical solution. The effects of various physical parameters such as viscoelastic parameter, Chandrasekhar number, Prandtl number, variable thermal conductivity parameter, Eckert number, thermal radiation parameter and non-uniform heat source/sink parameters which determine the temperature profiles are shown in several plots and the heat transfer coefficient is tabulated for a range of values of said parameters. Some important findings reported in this work reveals that combined effect of variable thermal conductivity, radiation and non-uniform heat source have significant impact in controlling the rate of heat transfer in the boundary layer region.  相似文献

The two-dimensional, steady, laminar, forced and free convective boundary layer flow of a magnetic fluid over a semi-infinite vertical plate, under the action of a localized magnetic field, is numerically studied. The magnetic fluid is considered to be water-based with temperature dependent viscosity and thermal conductivity. The study of the boundary layer is separated into two cases. In case I the boundary layer is studied near the leading edge, where it is dominated by the large viscous forces, whereas in case II the boundary layer is studied far from the leading edge of the plate where the effects of buoyancy forces increase. The numerical solution, for these two different cases, is obtained by an efficient numerical technique based on the common finite difference method. Numerical calculations are carried out for the value of Prandl number Pr =  49.832 (water-based magnetic fluid) and for different values of the dimensionless parameters entering into the problem and especially for the magnetic parameter Mn, the viscosity/temperature parameter Θ r and the thermal/conductivity parameter S*. The analysis of the obtained results show that the flow field is influenced by the application of the magnetic field as well as by the variation of the viscosity and the thermal conductivity of the fluid with temperature. It is hoped that they could be interesting for engineering applications.  相似文献

An analysis has been carried out to study the momentum and heat transfer characteristics in an incompressible electrically conducting non-Newtonian boundary layer flow of a viscoelastic fluid over a stretching sheet. The partial differential equations governing the flow and heat transfer characteristics are converted into highly non-linear coupled ordinary differential equations by similarity transformations. The effect of variable fluid viscosity, Magnetic parameter, Prandtl number, variable thermal conductivity, heat source/sink parameter and thermal radiation parameter are analyzed for velocity, temperature fields, and wall temperature gradient. The resultant coupled highly non-linear ordinary differential equations are solved numerically by employing a shooting technique with fourth order Runge–Kutta integration scheme. The fluid viscosity and thermal conductivity, respectively, assumed to vary as an inverse and linear function of temperature. The analysis reveals that the wall temperature profile decreases significantly due to increase in magnetic field parameter. Further, it is noticed that the skin friction of the sheet decreases due to increase in the Magnetic parameter of the flow characteristics.  相似文献

An analysis is performed for non-Darcy free convection flow of an electrically conducting fluid over an impermeable vertical plate embedded in a thermally stratified, fluid saturated porous medium for the case of power-law surface temperature. The present work examines the effects of non-Darcian flow phenomena, variable viscosity, Hartmann–Darcy number and thermal stratification on free convective transport and demonstrates the variation in heat transfer prediction based on three different flow models. The wall effect on porosity variation is approximated by an exponential function. The effects of thermal dispersion and variable stagnant thermal conductivity are taken into consideration in the energy equation. The resulting non-similar system of equations is solved using a finite difference method. Results are presented for velocity, temperature profiles and local Nusselt number for representative values of different controlling parameters.  相似文献

In this article, the steady‐state flow of a Hagen‐Poiseuille modelin a circular pipe is considered and entropy generation due tofluid friction and heat transfer is examined. Because of variationin fluid viscosity, the entropy generation in the flow varies. Inhis model, Arrhenius law is applied for temperature equation‐dependent viscosity, and the influence of viscosity parameters on the entropy generation number and distribution of temperature and velocity is investigated. The governing momentum and energy equations, which are coupled due to the dissipative term in the energy equation, were solved by analytical techniques. The solutions of equations via perturbation method and homotopy perturbation method are obtained and then compared with those of numerical solutions. It is found that the fluid viscosity influences considerably the temperature distribution in the fluid close to the pipe wall, and increasing pipe wall temperature enhances the rate of entropy generation. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Research on optimization of entropy generation in nanofluid flow gained much interest. In this study, the Walter's-B nanofluid flow is considered to analyze the irreversibility in cubic autocatalysis. Fluid motion is considered in presence of viscous dissipation, magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), radiation, and heat generation absorption. Homotopy analysis method (HAM) is employed to solve nonlinear ordinary differential system. Results show that fluid flow reduces for larger Weissenberg and Hartman numbers. Temperature gradually enhances for larger Weissenberg number and radiation parameter. For higher estimation of thermophoresis parameter, the temperature and concentration are enhanced. Opposite impact of Hartman and Weissenberg numbers is noticed for entropy generation and Bejan number. Disorderedness and Bejan number are reduced near the sheet, while the opposite trend is seen away from the sheet.  相似文献

In this paper, we study the heat transfer in the fully developed flow of a viscoelastic fluid, a slag layer, down a vertical wall. A new constitutive relation for the stress tensor of this fluid is proposed, where the viscosity depends on the volume fraction, temperature, and shear rate. For the heat flux vector, we assume the Fourier's law of conduction with a constant thermal conductivity. The model is also capable of exhibiting normal stress effects. The governing equations are non‐dimensionalized and numerically solved to study the effects of various dimensionless parameters on the velocity, temperature, and volume fraction. The effect of the exponent in the Reynolds viscosity model is also discussed. The different cases of shear‐thinning and shear‐thickening, cooling and heating, are compared and discussed. The results indicate that the viscous dissipation and radiation (at the free surface) cause the temperature to be higher inside the flow domain. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of variable viscosity and thermal conductivity on coupled heat and mass transfer by free convection about a permeable horizontal cylinder embedded in porous media using Ergun mode are studied. The fluid viscosity and thermal conductivity and are assumed to vary as a linear function of temperature while the mass diffusion is assumed to vary as linear function of concentration. The surface of the horizontal cylinder is maintained at a uniform wall temperature and a uniform wall concentration. The transformed governing equations are obtained and solved by using the implicit finite difference method. Numerical results for dimensionless temperature and concentration profiles as well as Nusselt and Sherwood numbers are presented for various values of parameters namely, Ergun number, transpiration parameter, Rayleigh and Lewis numbers and buoyancy ratio parameter.  相似文献

This study deals with the temperature-dependent viscosity effects on the natural convection boundary layer on a horizontal elliptical cylinder with constant surface heat flux. The mathematical problem is reduced to a pair of coupled partial differential equations for the temperature and the stream function, and the resulting nonlinear equations are solved numerically by cubic spline collocation method. Results for the heat transfer characteristics are presented as functions of eccentric angle for various values of viscosity variation parameters, Prandtl numbers and aspect ratios. Results show that an increase in the viscosity variation parameter tends to accelerate the fluid flow near the surface and increase the maximum velocity, thus decreasing the velocity boundary layer thickness. As the viscosity variation parameter is increased, the surface temperature tends to decrease, thus increasing the local Nusselt number. Moreover, the local Nusselt number of the elliptical cylinder increases as the Prandtl number of the fluid is increased.  相似文献

An analysis is presented to investigate the Hall and Ion-slip effects on fully developed electrically conducting couple stress fluid flow between vertical parallel plates in the presence of a temperature dependent heat source. The governing non-linear partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations and then solved using homotopy analysis method (HAM). The effects of the magnetic parameter, Hall parameter, Ion-slip parameter and couple stress fluid parameter on velocity and temperature are discussed and shown graphically.  相似文献

In this paper we present numerical solutions to the unsteady convective boundary layer flow of a viscous fluid at a vertical stretching surface with variable transport properties and thermal radiation. Both assisting and opposing buoyant flow situations are considered. Using a similarity transformation, the governing time-dependent partial differential equations are first transformed into coupled, non-linear ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. Numerical solutions to these equations subject to appropriate boundary conditions are obtained by a second order finite difference scheme known as the Keller-Box method. The numerical results thus obtained are analyzed for the effects of the pertinent parameters namely, the unsteady parameter, the free convection parameter, the suction/injection parameter, the Prandtl number, the thermal conductivity parameter and the thermal radiation parameter on the flow and heat transfer characteristics. It is worth mentioning that the momentum and thermal boundary layer thicknesses decrease with an increase in the unsteady parameter.  相似文献

The problem of fully-developed laminar free-convection flow in a vertical channel is studied analytically with one region filled with micropolar fluid and the other region with a viscous fluid. Using the boundary and interface conditions proposed by previous investigators, analytical expressions for linear velocity, micro-rotation velocity and temperature have been obtained. Numerical results are presented graphically for the distribution of velocity, micro-rotation velocity and temperature fields for varying physical parameters such as the ratio of Grashof number to Reynolds number, viscosity ratio, width ratio, conductivity ratio and micropolar fluid material parameter. It is found that the effect of the micropolar fluid material parameter suppress the velocity whereas it enhances the micro-rotation velocity. The effect of the ratio of Grashof number to Reynolds number is found to enhance both the linear velocity and the micro-rotation velocity. The effects of the width ratio and the conductivity ratio are found to enhance the temperature distribution.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the flow and heat and mass transfer characteristics of the free convection on a vertical plate with variable wall temperature and concentration in a doubly stratified micropolar fluid. A uniform magnetic field is applied normal to the plate. The governing non-linear partial differential equations are transformed into a system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations and then solved numerically using the Keller-box method. The numerical results are compared and found to be in good agreement with previously published results as special cases of the present investigation. The non-dimensional velocity, microrotation, temperature and concentration are presented graphically for various values of magnetic parameter, coupling number, thermal and solutal stratification parameters. In addition, the Nusselt number, the Sherwood number, the skin-friction coefficient, and the wall couple stress are shown in a tabular form.  相似文献

Entropy balance in the one-dimensional hyperbolic quasi-gasdynamic (HQGD) system of equations is analyzed. In particular, in regular flow regimes, it is shown that the behavior of entropy in the HQGD system is mainly determined by terms involving the natural viscosity and thermal conductivity coefficients. The total entropy production differs from the Navier–Stokes equations for viscous compressible heat-conducting gases by O2) terms, where τ is a relaxation parameter. Additionally, a similar analysis of energy balance is performed for the simpler case of the barotropic HQGD system, which is of interest for some applications.

In this paper, the problem of magneto-micropolar fluid flow, heat and mass transfer with suction and blowing through a porous medium is analyzed numerically. This problem was studied under the effects of chemical reaction, Hall, ion-slip currents, variable viscosity and variable thermal diffusivity. The governing fundamental equations are approximated by a system of non-linear ordinary differential equation. This system is solved numerically by using the Chebyshev pseudospectral method. Details of the velocities, temperature and concentration fields as well as the local skin-friction, the local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number for the various values of the parameters of the problem are presented. The numerical results indicate that, the concentration decreases as the permeability parameter, the chemical reaction parameter and Schmidt number increase and it increases as variable viscosity and variable thermal diffusivity increase. The local Nusselt number and the local Sherwood number decrease as the magnetic field and ion-slip current parameters increase, whereas they increase as Hall current parameter increases. Also, there is a (non-linear) strong dependency of the concentration gradient at the wall on both Schmidt number and the mass transfer parameter.  相似文献

The non-trivial task of an engineer is to derive or at least to use a constitutive relation which leads to a solvable equation but still expresses the system behavior adequately, so that the solution for the motion is accurate. Often the system has solid-like or fluid-like behavior, and an appropriate relation is chosen. In the so-called Bingham-Ilyushin matter both regimes occur simultaneously. This can be expressed by using a tensor-linear constitutive relation with a nonlinear (viscosity) term and even be solved in a specific case of material parameters (b = 0 ). The analytical solution for the velocity distribution in a channel with moving walls is presented here. The velocity gradients lead to an increase in temperature. The internal friction due to the (nonlinear) viscosity contributes to the entropy production and accounts for the irreversibility of the process. The aim is to analyze the role of each material parameter in the entropy production which might be used as a measure of irreversibility of the process. (© 2011 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Flow and thermal field in nanofluid is analyzed using single phase thermal dispersion model proposed by Xuan and Roetzel [Y. Xuan, W. Roetzel, Conceptions for heat transfer correlation of nanofluids, Int. J. Heat Mass Transfer 43 (2000) 3701–3707]. The non-dimensional form of the transport equations involving the thermal dispersion effect is solved numerically using semi-explicit finite volume solver in a collocated grid. Heat transfer augmentation for copper–water nanofluid is estimated in a thermally driven two-dimensional cavity. The thermo-physical properties of nanofluid are calculated involving contributions due to the base fluid and nanoparticles. The flow and heat transfer process in the cavity is analyzed using different thermo-physical models for the nanofluid available in literature. The influence of controlling parameters on convective recirculation and heat transfer augmentation induced in buoyancy driven cavity is estimated in detail. The controlling parameters considered for this study are Grashof number (103 < Gr < 105), solid volume fraction (0 < ? < 0.2) and empirical shape factor (0.5 < n < 6). Simulations carried out with various thermo-physical models of the nanofluid show significant influence on thermal boundary layer thickness when the model incorporates the contribution of nanoparticles in the density as well as viscosity of nanofluid. Simulations incorporating the thermal dispersion model show increment in local thermal conductivity at locations with maximum velocity. The suspended particles increase the surface area and the heat transfer capacity of the fluid. As solid volume fraction increases, the effect is more pronounced. The average Nusselt number from the hot wall increases with the solid volume fraction. The boundary surface of nanoparticles and their chaotic movement greatly enhances the fluid heat conduction contribution. Considerable improvement in thermal conductivity is observed as a result of increase in the shape factor.  相似文献

Steady mixed convection micropolar fluid flow towards stagnation point formed on horizontal linearly stretchable melting surface is studied. The vortex viscosity of micropolar fluid along a melting surface is proposed as a constant function of temperature while dynamic viscosity and thermal conductivity are temperature dependent due to the influence of internal heat source on the fluid. Similarity transformations were used to convert the governing equation into non-linear ODE and solved numerically. A parametric study is conducted. An analysis of the results obtained shows that the flow-field is influenced appreciably by heat source, melting, velocity ratio, variable viscosity and thermal conductivity.  相似文献
