A graph G is perfect if for all induced subgraphs H of G, . A graph G is Berge if neither G nor its complement contains an induced odd cycle of length at least five. The Strong Perfect Graph Theorem [9] states that a graph is perfect if and only if it is Berge. The Strong Perfect Graph Theorem was obtained as a consequence of a decomposition theorem for Berge graphs [M. Chudnovsky, Berge trigraphs and their applications, PhD thesis, Princeton University, 2003; M. Chudnovsky, N. Robertson, P. Seymour, and R. Thomas, The strong perfect graph theorem, Ann Math 164 (2006), 51–229.], and one of the decompositions in this decomposition theorem was the “balanced skew‐partition.” A clique‐coloring of a graph G is an assignment of colors to the vertices of G in such a way that no inclusion‐wise maximal clique of G of size at least two is monochromatic, and the clique‐chromatic number of G, denoted by , is the smallest number of colors needed to clique‐color G. There exist graphs of arbitrarily large clique‐chromatic number, but it is not known whether the clique‐chromatic number of perfect graphs is bounded. In this article, we prove that every perfect graph that does not admit a balanced skew‐partition is 2‐clique colorable. The main tool used in the proof is a decomposition theorem for “tame Berge trigraphs” due to Chudnovsky et al. ( http://arxiv.org/abs/1308.6444 ).  相似文献

Extremal problems for graph homomorphisms have recently become a topic of much research. Let denote the number of homomorphisms from G to H. A natural set of problems arises when we fix an image graph H and determine which graph(s) G on n vertices and m edges maximize . We prove that if H is loop‐threshold, then, for every n and m, there is a threshold graph G with n vertices and m edges that maximizes . Similarly, we show that loop‐quasi‐threshold image graphs have quasi‐threshold extremal graphs. In the case , the path on three vertices in which every vertex in looped, the authors [5] determined a set of five graphs, one of which must be extremal for . Also in this article, using similar techniques, we determine a set of extremal graphs for “the fox,” a graph formed by deleting the loop on one of the end‐vertices of . The fox is the unique connected loop‐threshold image graph on at most three vertices for which the extremal problem was not previously solved.  相似文献

Given a graph F, a graph G is uniquely Fsaturated if F is not a subgraph of G and adding any edge of the complement to G completes exactly one copy of F. In this article, we study uniquely ‐saturated graphs. We prove the following: (1) a graph is uniquely C5‐saturated if and only if it is a friendship graph. (2) There are no uniquely C6‐saturated graphs or uniquely C7‐saturated graphs. (3) For , there are only finitely many uniquely ‐saturated graphs (we conjecture that in fact there are none). Additionally, our results show that there are finitely many k‐friendship graphs (as defined by Kotzig) for .  相似文献

In this paper we examine the connections between equistable graphs, general partition graphs and triangle graphs. While every general partition graph is equistable and every equistable graph is a triangle graph, not every triangle graph is equistable, and a conjecture due to Jim Orlin states that every equistable graph is a general partition graph. The conjecture holds within the class of chordal graphs; if true in general, it would provide a combinatorial characterization of equistable graphs.Exploiting the combinatorial features of triangle graphs and general partition graphs, we verify Orlin’s conjecture for several graph classes, including AT-free graphs and various product graphs. More specifically, we obtain a complete characterization of the equistable graphs that are non-prime with respect to the Cartesian or the tensor product, and provide some necessary and sufficient conditions for the equistability of strong, lexicographic and deleted lexicographic products. We also show that the general partition graphs are not closed under the strong product, answering a question by McAvaney et al.  相似文献

It was recently proved that any graph satisfying contains a stable set hitting every maximum clique. In this note, we prove that the same is true for graphs satisfying unless the graph is the strong product of an odd hole and .We also provide a counterexample to a recent conjecture on the existence of a stable set hitting every sufficiently large maximal clique.  相似文献

Hadwiger's conjecture asserts that every graph with chromatic number t contains a complete minor of order t. Given integers , the Kneser graph is the graph with vertices the k‐subsets of an n‐set such that two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding k‐subsets are disjoint. We prove that Hadwiger's conjecture is true for the complements of Kneser graphs.  相似文献

Consider a graph of minimum degree δ and order n. Its total vertex irregularity strength is the smallest integer k for which one can find a weighting such that for every pair of vertices of G. We prove that the total vertex irregularity strength of graphs with is bounded from above by . One of the cornerstones of the proof is a random ordering of the vertices generated by order statistics.  相似文献

We show that posets of bounded height whose cover graphs exclude a fixed graph as a topological minor have bounded dimension. This result was already proven by Walczak. However, our argument is entirely combinatorial and does not rely on structural decomposition theorems. Given a poset with large dimension but bounded height, we directly find a large clique subdivision in its cover graph. Therefore, our proof is accessible to readers not familiar with topological graph theory, and it allows us to provide explicit upper bounds on the dimension. With the introduced tools we show a second result that is supporting a conjectured generalization of the previous result. We prove that ‐free posets whose cover graphs exclude a fixed graph as a topological minor contain only standard examples of size bounded in terms of k.  相似文献

A kernel of a digraphD is a set of vertices which is both independent and absorbant. In 1983, C. Berge and P. Duchet conjectured that an undirected graphG is perfect if and only if the following condition is fulfilled: ifD is an orientation ofG (where pairs of opposite arcs are allowed) and if every clique ofD has a kernel thenD has a kernel. We prove here the conjecture for the complements of strongly perfect graphs and establish that a minimal counterexample to the conjecture is not a complete join of an independent set with another graph.  相似文献

A matching M in a graph G is uniquely restricted if there is no matching in G that is distinct from M but covers the same vertices as M. Solving a problem posed by Golumbic, Hirst, and Lewenstein, we characterize the graphs in which some maximum matching is uniquely restricted. Solving a problem posed by Levit and Mandrescu, we characterize the graphs in which every maximum matching is uniquely restricted. Both our characterizations lead to efficient recognition algorithms for the corresponding graphs.  相似文献

The clique number of an undirected graph G is the maximum order of a complete subgraph of G and is a well‐known lower bound for the chromatic number of G. Every proper k‐coloring of G may be viewed as a homomorphism (an edge‐preserving vertex mapping) of G to the complete graph of order k. By considering homomorphisms of oriented graphs (digraphs without cycles of length at most 2), we get a natural notion of (oriented) colorings and oriented chromatic number of oriented graphs. An oriented clique is then an oriented graph whose number of vertices and oriented chromatic number coincide. However, the structure of oriented cliques is much less understood than in the undirected case. In this article, we study the structure of outerplanar and planar oriented cliques. We first provide a list of 11 graphs and prove that an outerplanar graph can be oriented as an oriented clique if and only if it contains one of these graphs as a spanning subgraph. Klostermeyer and MacGillivray conjectured that the order of a planar oriented clique is at most 15, which was later proved by Sen. We show that any planar oriented clique on 15 vertices must contain a particular oriented graph as a spanning subgraph, thus reproving the above conjecture. We also provide tight upper bounds for the order of planar oriented cliques of girth k for all .  相似文献

We study a family of digraphs (directed graphs) that generalises the class of Cayley digraphs. For nonempty subsets of a group G, we define the two‐sided group digraph to have vertex set G, and an arc from x to y if and only if for some and . In common with Cayley graphs and digraphs, two‐sided group digraphs may be useful to model networks as the same routing and communication scheme can be implemented at each vertex. We determine necessary and sufficient conditions on L and R under which may be viewed as a simple graph of valency , and we call such graphs two‐sided group graphs. We also give sufficient conditions for two‐sided group digraphs to be connected, vertex‐transitive, or Cayley graphs. Several open problems are posed. Many examples are given, including one on 12 vertices with connected components of sizes 4 and 8.  相似文献

Let denote the graph obtained from the complete graph by deleting the edges of some ‐subgraph. The author proved earlier that for each fixed s and , every graph with chromatic number has a minor. This confirmed a partial case of the corresponding conjecture by Woodall and Seymour. In this paper, we show that the statement holds already for much smaller t, namely, for .  相似文献

A graph G is almost hypohamiltonian if G is non‐hamiltonian, there exists a vertex w such that is non‐hamiltonian, and for any vertex the graph is hamiltonian. We prove the existence of an almost hypohamiltonian graph with 17 vertices and of a planar such graph with 39 vertices. Moreover, we find a 4‐connected almost hypohamiltonian graph, while Thomassen's question whether 4‐connected hypohamiltonian graphs exist remains open. We construct planar almost hypohamiltonian graphs of order n for every . During our investigation we draw connections between hypotraceable, hypohamiltonian, and almost hypohamiltonian graphs, and discuss a natural extension of almost hypohamiltonicity. Finally, we give a short argument disproving a conjecture of Chvátal (originally disproved by Thomassen), strengthen a result of Araya and Wiener on cubic planar hypohamiltonian graphs, and mention open problems.  相似文献

A graph is intrinsically knotted if every embedding contains a nontrivially knotted cycle. It is known that intrinsically knotted graphs have at least 21 edges and that the KS graphs, K7 and the 13 graphs obtained from K7 by moves, are the only minor minimal intrinsically knotted graphs with 21 edges [1, 9, 11, 12]. This set includes exactly one bipartite graph, the Heawood graph. In this article we classify the intrinsically knotted bipartite graphs with at most 22 edges. Previously known examples of intrinsically knotted graphs of size 22 were those with KS graph minor and the 168 graphs in the K3, 3, 1, 1 and families. Among these, the only bipartite example with no Heawood subgraph is Cousin 110 of the family. We show that, in fact, this is a complete listing. That is, there are exactly two graphs of size at most 22 that are minor minimal bipartite intrinsically knotted: the Heawood graph and Cousin 110.  相似文献

We present a transformation on a chordal 2‐connected simple graph that decreases the number of spanning trees. Based on this transformation, we show that for positive integers n, m with , the threshold graph having n vertices and m edges that consists of an ‐clique and vertices of degree 2 is the only graph with the fewest spanning trees among all 2‐connected chordal graphs on n vertices and m edges.  相似文献

Let be a plane graph with the sets of vertices, edges, and faces V, E, and F, respectively. If one can color all elements in using k colors so that any two adjacent or incident elements receive distinct colors, then G is said to be entirely k‐colorable. Kronk and Mitchem [Discrete Math 5 (1973) 253‐260] conjectured that every plane graph with maximum degree Δ is entirely ‐colorable. This conjecture has now been settled in Wang and Zhu (J Combin Theory Ser B 101 (2011) 490–501), where the authors asked: is every simple plane graph entirely ‐colorable? In this article, we prove that every simple plane graph with is entirely ‐colorable, and conjecture that every simple plane graph, except the tetrahedron, is entirely ‐colorable.  相似文献

Given two graphs G and H , an Hdecomposition of G is a partition of the edge set of G such that each part is either a single edge or forms a graph isomorphic to H . Let be the smallest number ? such that any graph G of order n admits an H‐decomposition with at most ? parts. Pikhurko and Sousa conjectured that for and all sufficiently large n , where denotes the maximum number of edges in a graph on n vertices not containing H as a subgraph. Their conjecture has been verified by Özkahya and Person for all edge‐critical graphs H . In this article, the conjecture is verified for the k‐fan graph. The kfan graph , denoted by , is the graph on vertices consisting of k triangles that intersect in exactly one common vertex called the center of the k‐fan.  相似文献

Let H denote the tree with six vertices, two of which are adjacent and of degree 3. Let G be a graph and be distinct vertices of G. We characterize those G that contain a topological H in which are of degree 3 and are of degree 1, which include all 5‐connected graphs. This work was motivated by the Kelmans–Seymour conjecture that 5‐connected nonplanar graphs contain topological K5.  相似文献

The second author's (B.A.R.) ω, Δ, χ conjecture proposes that every graph satisfies . In this article, we prove that the conjecture holds for all claw‐free graphs. Our approach uses the structure theorem of Chudnovsky and Seymour. Along the way, we discuss a stronger local conjecture, and prove that it holds for claw‐free graphs with a three‐colorable complement. To prove our results, we introduce a very useful χ‐preserving reduction on homogeneous pairs of cliques, and thus restrict our view to so‐called skeletal graphs.  相似文献
