We construct, for 1<p<∞,p ≠ 2, an operator onL pwhose distance to the space of compact operators onL pis not attained. We also show that the identity operator onL p,p ≠ 1,2, ∞ has a unique best compact approximation. Research partially supported by NSF grant DMS-8201635.  相似文献

A bounded linear operator between Banach spaces is calledcompletely continuous if it carries weakly convergent sequences into norm convergent sequences. Isolated is a universal operator for the class of non-completely-continuous operators fromL 1 into an arbitrary Banach space, namely, the operator fromL 1 into ⊆ defined byT 0(f) = (∫r n f d μ) n>-0, wherer n is thenth Rademacher function. It is also shown that there does not exist a universal operator for the class of non-completely-continuous operators between two arbitrary Banach spaces. The proof uses the factorization theorem for weakly compact operators and a Tsirelson-like space. Supported in part by NSF grant DMS-9306460. We show that for 1 < p < ∞ with p ≠ 2 the space L p (0,1) is not uniformly homeomorphic to . We also show that if 1 < p < 2 < q < ∞ the space has unique uniform structure, answering a question of Johnson, Lindenstrauss and Schechtman (Geom. Funct. Anal. 6:430–470, 1996). We give characterizations of radial Fourier multipliers as acting on radial L p functions, 1 < p < 2d/(d + 1), in terms of Lebesgue space norms for Fourier localized pieces of the convolution kernel. This is a special case of corresponding results for general Hankel multipliers. Besides L p  − L q bounds we also characterize weak type inequalities and intermediate inequalities involving Lorentz spaces. Applications include results on interpolation of multiplier spaces. G. We show that a compact Riemannian manifold with weakly pointwise 1/4-pinched sectional curvatures is either locally symmetric or diffeomorphic to a space form. More generally, we classify all compact, locally irreducible Riemannian manifolds M with the property that M × R 2 has non-negative isotropic curvature. We study the class of r.i. spaces in which Cesaro means of any weakly null martingale difference sequence is strongly null. This property is related to the Banach-Saks property. We show that in classical (separable) r.i. spaces (such as Orlicz, Lorentz and Marcinkiewicz spaces) these properties coincide but this is no longer true for general r.i. spaces. We locate also a class of r.i. spaces having this property where an analogue of the classical Dunford-Pettis characterization of relatively weakly compact subsets in L 1 holds. We show that the local trigonometric bases introduced by Malvar, Coifman and Meyer constitute bases, but not unconditional bases, for Lp(ℝ) with 1<p<∞, p≠2. In addition, we characterize the functions in Lp(ℝ) for 1<p<∞ in terms of their local trigonometric basis coefficients. Dedicated to Dr. Charles A. Micchelli for his 60th birthday Mathematics subject classification (2000) 42C15. Supported by Prof. Y. In this paper, we characterize, for 1≤p<∞, the multiple (p, 1)-summing multilinear operators on the product ofC(K) spaces in terms of their representing polymeasures. As consequences, we obtain a new characterization of (p, 1)-summing linear operators onC(K) in terms of their representing measures and a new multilinear characterization ofL spaces. We also solve a problem stated by M.S. Ramanujan and E. Schock, improve a result of H. P. Rosenthal and S. J. Szarek, and give new results about polymeasures. The two-dimensional classical Hardy space Hp(T×T) on the bidisc are introduced, and it is shown that the maximal operator of the (C,α,β) means of a distribution is bounded from the space Hp(T×T) to Lp(T2) (1/(α+1), 1/(β+1)<p≤∞), and is of weak type (H 1 # (T×T), L1(T2)), where the Hardy space H 1 # (T×T) is defined by the hybrid maximal function. As a consequence we obtain that the (C, α, β) means of a function f∈H 1 # (T×T)⊃LlogL(T 2) convergs a. e. to the function in question. Moreover, we prove that the (C, α, β) means are uniformly bounded on the spaces Hp(T×T) whenever 1/(α+1), 1(β+1)<p<∞. Thus, in case f∈Hp(T×T), the (C, α, β) means convergs to f in Hp(T×T) norm whenever (1/(α+1), 1/(β+1)<p<∞). The same results are proved for the conjugate (C, α, β) means, too. In this paper, we study the energy equality and the uniqueness of weak solutions to the MHD equations in the critical space L∞(0, T; L^n(Ω). We prove that if the velocity u belongs to the critical space L∞(0, T; L^n(Ω), the energy equality holds. On the basis of the energy equality, we further prove that the weak solution to the MHD equations is unique.  相似文献

This is the second paper in a series introducing a generalized Fredholm theory in a new class of smooth spaces called polyfolds. In general, these spaces are not locally homeomorphic to open sets in Banach spaces. The current paper develops the Fredholm theory in M-polyfold bundles. It consists of a transversality and a perturbation theory. In upcoming papers the generalized Fredholm theory will be applied to the Floer Theory, the Gromov–Witten Theory and the Symplectic Field Theory H.H.’s research partially supported by NSF grant DMS-0603957. In this paper, the authors give the L p (1 < p < ∞ ) boundedness of the k-th order commutator of parabolic singular integral with the kernel function Ω ∈ L(log +  L) k + 1(S n − 1). The result in this paper is an extension of some known results. The research was supported by NSF of China (Grant: 10571015) and SRFDP of China (Grant: 20050027025).  相似文献

Bounds for the bracketing entropy of the classes of bounded k-monotone functions on [0, A] are obtained under both the Hellinger distance and the L p (Q) distance, where 1 ⩽ p < ∞ and Q is a probability measure on [0,A]. The result is then applied to obtain the rate of convergence of the maximum likelihood estimator of a k-monotone density. General results of interpolation (e.g., Nevanlinna-Pick) by elements in the noncommutative analytic Toeplitz algebraF (resp., noncommutative disc algebraA n) with consequences to the interpolation by bounded operator-valued analytic functions in the unit ball of ℂn are obtained. Noncommutative Poisson transforms are used to provide new von Neumann type inequalities. Completely isometric representations of the quotient algebraF /J on Hilbert spaces whereJ is anyw *-closed, 2-sided ideal ofF , are obtained and used to construct aw *-continuous,F /J-functional calculus associated to row contractionsT=[T 1,…,T n] whenf(T1, …, Tn)=0 for anyf∈J. Other properties of the dual algebraF /J are considered. The second author was partially supported by NSF DMS-9531954.  相似文献

We prove local a priori estimates inL p , 1<p<∞, for first-order linear operators that satisfy the Nirenberg-Treves condition (p) and whose coefficients have Lipschitz continuous derivatives of order one. When the number of variables is two, only Lipschitz continuity of the coefficients is assumed. This extends toL p spaces estimates that were previously known forp=2. Examples show that the regularity required from the coefficients is essentially minimal. Research partially supported by CNPq.  相似文献

We show norm estimates for the sum of independent random variables in noncommutative L p -spaces for 1 < p < ∞, following our previous work. These estimates generalize the classical Rosenthal inequality in the commutative case. As applications, we derive an equivalence for the p-norm of the singular values of a random matrix with independent entries, and characterize those symmetric subspaces and unitary ideals which can be realized as subspaces of a noncommutative L p for 2 < p < ∞.
