For any prime,p, we construct a Cayley graph on the group,G, of affine linear transformations ofℤ/pℤ of degree 2(p−1) and second eigenvalue with the following special property: the adjacency matrix of the graph is supported on the “blocks” associated to the trivial representation and the irreducible representation of sizep−1. SinceG is of orderp(p−1), the correspondingt-uniform Cayley hypergraph has essentially optimal second eigenvalue for this degree and size of the graph (see [2] for definitions). En route we give, for any integerk>1, a simple Cayley graph onp k nodes of degreep of second eigenvalue . A 0–1probability space is a probability space (, 2,P), where the sample space -{0, 1} n for somen. A probability space isk-wise independent if, whenY i is defined to be theith coordinate or the randomn-vector, then any subset ofk of theY i 's is (mutually) independent, and it is said to be a probability spacefor p 1,p 2, ...,p n ifP[Y i =1]=p i .We study constructions ofk-wise independent 0–1 probability spaces in which thep i 's are arbitrary. It was known that for anyp 1,p 2, ...,p n , ak-wise independent probability space of size always exists. We prove that for somep 1,p 2, ...,p n [0,1],m(n,k) is a lower bound on the size of anyk-wise independent 0–1 probability space. For each fixedk, we prove that everyk-wise independent 0–1 probability space when eachp i =k/n has size (n k ). For a very large degree of independence —k=[n], for >1/2- and allp i =1/2, we prove a lower bound on the size of . We establish a connection between the expansion coefficient of the product replacement graph Γk(G) and the minimal expansion coefficient of a Cayley graph of G with k generators. In particular, we show that the product replacement graphs Γk(PSL(2,p)) form an expander family, under assumption that all Cayley graphs of PSL(2,p), with at most k generators are expanders. This gives a new explanation of the outstanding performance of the product replacement algorithm and supports the speculation that all product replacement graphs are expanders [42,52].  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the following distributed bipartite matching problem: LetG=(L,R;E) be a bipartite graph in which boys are partL (left nodes), and girls are partR (right nodes.) There is an edge(l i ,r j )E iff boyl i is interested in girlr j . Every boyl i will propose to a girlr j among all those he is interested in, i.e., his adjacent right nodes in the bipartite graphG. If several boys propose to the same girl, only one of them will be accepted by the girl. We assume that none of the boys communicate with others. This matching problem is typical of distributed computing under incomplete information: Each boy only knows his own preference but none of the others. We first study the one-round matching problem: each boy proposes to at most one girl, so that the total number of girls receiving a proposal is maximized. If the maximum matching isM, then no deterministic algorithm can produce a matching of size not bounded by a constant, but a randomized algorithm achieves — and this is shown optimal by an adversary argument. If we allow many rounds in matching, with the senders learning from their failures, then, for deterministic algorithms, the ratio (of the optimal solution to the solution of the algorithm) is unbounded when the number of rounds is smaller than (G), and becomes bounded (two) at the (G)-th round. In contrast, an extension of the one-round randomized algorithm establishes that there is no such discontinuity in the randomized case. This randomized result is also matched by an upper bound of asymptotically the same order.  相似文献

The following problem is considered. Givenm+1 points {x i }0 m inR n which generate anm-dimensional linear manifold, construct for this manifold a maximally linearly independent basis that consists of vectors of the formx i x j . This problem is present in, e.g., stable variants of the secant and interpolation methods, where it is required to approximate the Jacobian matrixf′ of a nonlinear mappingf by using values off computed atm+1 points. In this case, it is also desirable to have a combination of finite differences with maximal linear independence. As a natural measure of linear independence, we consider the hadamard condition number which is minimized to find an optimal combination ofm pairs {x i ,x j }. We show that the problem is not NP-hard, but can be reduced to the minimum spanning tree problem, which is solved by the greedy algorithm inO(m 2) time. The complexity of this reduction is equivalent to onem×n matrix-matrix multiplication, and according to the Coppersmith-Winograd estimate, is belowO(n 2.376) form=n. Applications of the algorithm to interpolation methods are discussed. Given a connected graphG=(V, E) with |V|=n and maximum degree such thatG is neither a complete graph nor an odd cycle, Brooks' theorem states thatG can be colored with colors. We generalize this as follows: letG-v be -colored; then,v can be colored by considering the vertices in anO(log n) radius aroundv and by recoloring anO(log n) length augmenting path inside it. Using this, we show that -coloringG is reducible inO(log3 n/log) time to (+1)-vertex coloringG in a distributed model of computation. This leads to fast distributed algorithms and a linear-processorNC algorithm for -coloring.A preliminary version of this paper appeared as part of the paper Improved Distributed Algorithms for Coloring and Network Decomposition Problems, in theProceedings of the ACM Symposium on Theory of Computing pages 581–592, 1992. We describe a deterministic algorithm which, on input integersd, m and real number (0,1), produces a subset S of [m] d ={1,2,3,...,m} d that hits every combinatorial rectangle in [m] d of volume at least , i.e., every subset of [m] d the formR 1×R 2×...×R d of size at least m d . The cardinality of S is polynomial inm(logd)/, and the time to construct it is polynomial inmd/. Multi-level overlay graphs represent a speed-up technique for shortest paths computation which is based on a hierarchical decomposition of a weighted directed graph G. They have been shown to be experimentally efficient, especially when applied to timetable information. However, no theoretical result on the cost of constructing, maintaining and querying multi-level overlay graphs in a dynamic environment is known. In this paper, we show theoretical properties of multi-level overlay graphs that lead us to the definition of a new data structure for the computation and the maintenance of an overlay graph of G while weight decrease or weight increase operations are performed on G. Our solution is theoretically faster than the recomputation from scratch and allows queries that can be performed more efficiently than running Dijkstra’s shortest paths algorithm on G. Given a spanning tree T of some graph G, the problem of minimum spanning tree verification is to decide whether T = MST(G). A celebrated result of Komlós shows that this problem can be solved with a linear number of comparisons. Somewhat unexpectedly, MST verification turns out to be useful in actually computing minimum spanning trees from scratch. It is this application that has led some to wonder whether a more flexible version of MST verification could be used to derive a faster deterministic minimum spanning tree algorithm. In this paper we consider the online MST verification problem in which we are given a sequence of queries of the form “Is e in the MST of T ∪{e}?”, where the tree T is fixed. We prove that there are no linear-time solutions to the online MST verification problem, and in particular, that answering m queries requires Ω(mα(m,n)) time, where α(m,n) is the inverse-Ackermann function and n is the size of the tree. Given an undirected multigraph G and a subset of vertices SV (G), the STEINER TREE PACKING problem is to find a largest collection of edge-disjoint trees that each connects S. This problem and its generalizations have attracted considerable attention from researchers in different areas because of their wide applicability. This problem was shown to be APX-hard (no polynomial time approximation scheme unless P=NP). In fact, prior to this paper, not even an approximation algorithm with asymptotic ratio o(n) was known despite several attempts. In this work, we present the first polynomial time constant factor approximation algorithm for the STEINER TREE PACKING problem. The main theorem is an approximate min-max relation between the maximum number of edge-disjoint trees that each connects S (S-trees) and the minimum size of an edge-cut that disconnects some pair of vertices in S (S-cut). In a typical parallel or distributed computation model processors are connected by a spars interconnection network. To establish open-line communication between pairs of processors that wish to communicate interactively, a set of disjoint paths has to be constructed on the network. Since communication needs vary in time, paths have to be dynamically constructed and destroyed.We study the complexity of constructing disjoint paths between given pairs of vertices on expander interconnection graphs. These graphs have been shown before to possess desirable properties for other communication tasks.We present a sufficient condition for the existence ofKn Q edge-disjoint paths connecting any set ofK pairs of vertices on an expander graph, wheren is the number of vertices and<1 is some constant. We then show that the computational problem of constructing these paths lies in the classes Deterministic-P and Random-P C.Furthermore, we show that the set of paths can be constructed in probabilistic polylog time in the parallel-distributed model of computation, in which then participating processors reside in the nodes of the communication graph and all communication is done through edges of the graph. Thus, the disjoint paths are constructed in the very computation model that uses them.Finally, we show how to apply variants of our parallel algorithms to find sets ofvertex-disjoint paths when certain conditions are satisfied.Supported in part by a Weizmann fellowship and by contract ONR N00014-85-C-0731.  相似文献

A subset C of vertices in an undirected graph G = (V, E) is called a 1-identifying code if the sets I(v)={u C: d(u,v) 1 }, v V, are non-empty and no two of them are the same set. A 1-identifying code C is called 1-edge-robust 1-identifying if it is 1-identifying in every graph G1 obtained from G by deleting or adding one edge. An equitable coloring of a graph is a proper vertex coloring such that the sizes of any two color classes differ by at most one. The least positive integer k for which there exists an equitable coloring of a graph G with k colors is said to be the equitable chromatic number of G and is denoted by χ=(G). The least positive integer k such that for any k′ ≥ k there exists an equitable coloring of a graph G with k′ colors is said to be the equitable chromatic threshold of G and is denoted by χ=*(G). In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of these coloring parameters in the probability space G(n,p) of random graphs. We prove that if n?1/5+? < p < 0.99 for some 0 < ?, then almost surely χ(G(n,p)) ≤ χ=(G(n,p)) = (1 + o(1))χ(G(n,p)) holds (where χ(G(n,p)) is the ordinary chromatic number of G(n,p)). We also show that there exists a constant C such that if C/n < p < 0.99, then almost surely χ(G(n,p)) ≤ χ=(G(n,p)) ≤ (2 + o(1))χ(G(n,p)). The following classical asymmetric leader election algorithm has obtained quite a bit of attention lately. Starting with n players, each one throws a coin, and the k of them which have each thrown a head (with probability q) go on, and the leader will be found amongst them, using the same strategy. Should nobody advance, the party will repeat the procedure. One of the most interesting parameter here is the number J (n) of rounds until a leader has been identified. In this paper we investigate, in the classical leader election algorithm, what happens near the end of the game, namely we fix an integer κ and we study the behaviour of the number of survivors L at level J (n) ? κ. In our asymptotic analysis (for n → ∞) we are focusing on the limiting distribution functions. We also investigate what happens, if the parameter p = 1 ? q gets small (p → 0) or large (p → 1). We use three e?cient tools: an urn model, a Mellin-Laplace technique for harmonic sums and some asymptotic distributions related to one of the extreme-value distributions: the Gumbel law. This study was motivated by a recent paper by Kalpathy, Mahmoud and Rosenkrantz, where they consider the number of survivors Sn,t, after t election rounds, in a broad class of fair leader election algorithms starting with n candidates.  相似文献

The computational complexity of the following type of problem is studied. Given a geometric graphG=(P, S) whereP is a set of points in the Euclidean plane andS a set of straight (closed) line segments between pairs of points inP, we want to know whetherG possesses a crossingfree subgraph of a special type. We analyze the problem of detecting crossingfree spanning trees, one factors and two factors in the plane. We study homotopy equivalences of p-completions of classifying spaces of finite groups. To each finite group G and each prime p, we associate a finite category ℒ p c (G) with the following properties. Two p-completed classifying spaces BG p and BG p have the same homotopy type if and only if the associated categories ℒ p c (G) and ℒ p c (G’) are equivalent. While it is easy to characterize the graphs on which a given transitive permutation groupG acts, it is very difficult to characterize the graphsX with Aut (X)=G. We prove here that for the certain transitive permutation groups a simple necessary condition is also sufficient. As a corollary we find that, whenG is ap-group with no homomorphism ontoZ p wrZ p , almost all Cayley graphs ofG have automorphism group isomorphic toG.  相似文献

A parity walk in an edge-coloring of a graph is a walk along which each color is used an even number of times. Let p(G) be the least number of colors in an edge-coloring of G having no parity path (a parity edge-coloring). Let (G) be the least number of colors in an edge-coloring of G having no open parity walk (a strong parity edge-coloring). Always (G) ≥ p(G) ≥ χ′(G). We prove that (K n ) = 2⌈lgn − 1 for all n. The optimal strong parity edge-coloring of K n is unique when n is a power of 2, and the optimal colorings are completely described for all n. Partially supported by NSF grant CCR 0093348.
