Several techniques for resampling dependent data have already been proposed. In this paper we use missing values techniques to modify the moving blocks jackknife and bootstrap. More specifically, we consider the blocks of deleted observations in the blockwise jackknife as missing data which are recovered by missing values estimates incorporating the observation dependence structure. Thus, we estimate the variance of a statistic as a weighted sample variance of the statistic evaluated in a “complete” series. Consistency of the variance and the distribution estimators of the sample mean are established. Also, we apply the missing values approach to the blockwise bootstrap by including some missing observations among two consecutive blocks and we demonstrate the consistency of the variance and the distribution estimators of the sample mean. Finally, we present the results of an extensive Monte Carlo study to evaluate the performance of these methods for finite sample sizes, showing that our proposal provides variance estimates for several time series statistics with smaller mean squared error than previous procedures.  相似文献

In this paper, a fixed design regression model where the errors follow a strictly stationary process is considered. In this model the conditional mean function and the conditional variance function are unknown curves. Correlated errors when observations are missing in the response variable are assumed. Four nonparametric estimators of the conditional variance function based on local polynomial fitting are proposed. Expressions of the asymptotic bias and variance of these estimators are obtained. A simulation study illustrates the behavior of the proposed estimators.  相似文献

The use of the jackknife method is successful in many situations. However, when the observations are from anm-dependent stationary process, the ordinary jackknife may provide an inconsistent variance estimator. It is shown in this note that this deficiency of the jackknife can be rectified and the jackknife variance estimator proposed is strongly consistent.  相似文献

Many applications aim to learn a high dimensional parameter of a data generating distribution based on a sample of independent and identically distributed observations. For example, the goal might be to estimate the conditional mean of an outcome given a list of input variables. In this prediction context, bootstrap aggregating (bagging) has been introduced as a method to reduce the variance of a given estimator at little cost to bias. Bagging involves applying an estimator to multiple bootstrap samples and averaging the result across bootstrap samples. In order to address the curse of dimensionality, a common practice has been to apply bagging to estimators which themselves use cross-validation, thereby using cross-validation within a bootstrap sample to select fine-tuning parameters trading off bias and variance of the bootstrap sample-specific candidate estimators. In this article we point out that in order to achieve the correct bias variance trade-off for the parameter of interest, one should apply the cross-validation selector externally to candidate bagged estimators indexed by these fine-tuning parameters. We use three simulations to compare the new cross-validated bagging method with bagging of cross-validated estimators and bagging of non-cross-validated estimators.  相似文献

A multivariate measure of association is proposed, which extends the bivariate copula-based measure Phi-Square introduced by Hoeffding [22]. We discuss its analytical properties and calculate its explicit value for some copulas of simple form; a simulation procedure to approximate its value is provided otherwise. A nonparametric estimator for multivariate Phi-Square is derived and its asymptotic behavior is established based on the weak convergence of the empirical copula process both in the case of independent observations and dependent observations from strictly stationary strong mixing sequences. The asymptotic variance of the estimator can be estimated by means of nonparametric bootstrap methods. For illustration, the theoretical results are applied to financial asset return data.  相似文献

Sample rotation theory with missing data   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper studies how the sample rotation method is applied to the case where item non-response occurs in surveys. The two cases where the response to the first occasion is complete or incomplete are considered. Using ratio imputation method, the estimators of the current population mean are proposed, which are valid under uniform response regardless of the model and under the ratio model regardless of the response mechanism. Under uniform response, the variances of the proposed estimators are derived. Interestingly, although their expressions are similar, the estimator for the case of incomplete response on the first occasion can have smaller variance than the one for the case of complete response on the first occasion under uniform response. The linearized jackknife variance estimators are also given. These variance estimators prove to be approximately design-unbiased under uniform response. It should be noted that similar property on variance estimators has not been discussed in literature.  相似文献

To take sample biases and skewness in the observations into account, practitioners frequently weight their observations according to some marginal distribution. The present paper demonstrates that such weighting can indeed improve the estimation. Studying contingency tables, estimators for marginal distributions are proposed under the assumption that another marginal is known. It is shown that the weighted estimators have a strictly smaller asymptotic variance whenever the two marginals are correlated. The finite sample performance is illustrated in a simulation study. As an application to traffic accident data the method allows for correcting a well‐known bias in the observed injury severity distribution.  相似文献

The problem of imputing missing observations under the linear regression model is considered. It is assumed that observations are missing at random and all the observations on the auxiliary or independent variables are available. Estimates of the regression parameters based on singly and multiply imputed values are given. Jackknife as well as bootstrap estimates of the variance of the singly imputed estimator of the regression parameters are given. These estimators are shown to be consistent estimators. The asymptotic distributions of the imputed estimators are also given to obtain interval estimates of the parameters of interest. These interval estimates are then compared with the interval estimates obtained from multiple imputation. It is shown that singly imputed estimators perform at least as good as multiply imputed estimators. A new nonparametric multiply imputed estimator is proposed and shown to perform as good as a multiply imputed estimator under normality. The singly imputed estimator, however, still remains at least as good as a multiply imputed estimator.  相似文献

In this paper jackknifing technique is examined for functions of the parametric component in a partially linear regression model with serially correlated errors. By deleting partial residuals a jackknife-type estimator is proposed. It is shown that the jackknife-type estimator and the usual semiparametric least-squares estimator (SLSE) are asymptotically equivalent. However, simulation shows that the former has smaller biases than the latter when the sample size is small or moderate. Moreover, since the errors are correlated, both the Tukey type and the delta type jackknife asymptotic variance estimators are not consistent. By introducing cross-product terms, a consistent estimator of the jackknife asymptotic variance is constructed and shown to be robust against heterogeneity of the error variances. In addition, simulation results show that confidence interval estimation based on the proposed jackknife estimator has better coverage probability than that based on the SLSE, even though the latter uses the information of the error structure, while the former does not.  相似文献

This paper introduces a method of bootstrap wavelet estimation in a nonparametric regression model with weakly dependent processes for both fixed and random designs. The asymptotic bounds for the bias and variance of the bootstrap wavelet estimators are given in the fixed design model. The conditional normality for a modified version of the bootstrap wavelet estimators is obtained in the fixed model. The consistency for the bootstrap wavelet estimator is also proved in the random design model. These results show that the bootstrap wavelet method is valid for the model with weakly dependent processes.  相似文献

For the well-known Fay-Herriot small area model, standard variance component estimation methods frequently produce zero estimates of the strictly positive model variance. As a consequence, an empirical best linear unbiased predictor of a small area mean, commonly used in small area estimation, could reduce to a simple regression estimator, which typically has an overshrinking problem. We propose an adjusted maximum likelihood estimator of the model variance that maximizes an adjusted likelihood defined as a product of the model variance and a standard likelihood (e.g., a profile or residual likelihood) function. The adjustment factor was suggested earlier by Carl Morris in the context of approximating a hierarchical Bayes solution where the hyperparameters, including the model variance, are assumed to follow a prior distribution. Interestingly, the proposed adjustment does not affect the mean squared error property of the model variance estimator or the corresponding empirical best linear unbiased predictors of the small area means in a higher order asymptotic sense. However, as demonstrated in our simulation study, the proposed adjustment has a considerable advantage in small sample inference, especially in estimating the shrinkage parameters and in constructing the parametric bootstrap prediction intervals of the small area means, which require the use of a strictly positive consistent model variance estimate.  相似文献

We consider estimation of the drift function of a stationary diffusion process when we observe high-frequency data with microstructure noise over a long time interval. We propose to estimate the drift function at a point by a Nadaraya–Watson estimator that uses observations that have been pre-averaged to reduce the noise. We give conditions under which our estimator is consistent and asympotically normal. Its rate and asymptotic bias and variance are the same as those without microstructure noise. To use our method in data analysis, we propose a data-based cross-validation method to determine the bandwidth in the Nadaraya–Watson estimator. Via simulation, we study several methods of bandwidth choices, and compare our estimator to several existing estimators. In terms of mean squared error, our new estimator outperforms existing estimators.  相似文献

This paper studies regression, where the reciprocal of the mean of a dependent variable is considered to be a linear function of the regressor variables, and the observations on the dependent variable are assumed to have an inverse Gaussian distribution. The large sample theory for the pseudo maximum likelihood estimators is available in the literature, only when the number of replications increase at a fixed rate. This is inadequate for many practical applications. This paper establishes consistency and derives the asymptotic distribution for the pseudo maximum likelihood estimators under very general conditions on the design points. This includes the case where the number of replications do not grow large, as well as the one where there are no replications. The bootstrap procedure for inference on the regression parameters is also investigated.Research supported in part by NSF Grant DMS-9208066.Research supported in part by NSERC of Canada.  相似文献

We deal with sequences of weakly dependent observations that are naturally ordered in time. Their constant mean is possibly subject to change at most once at some unknown time point. The aim is to test whether such an unknown change has occurred or not. The change point methods presented here rely on ratio type test statistics based on maxima of the cumulative sums. These detection procedures for the abrupt change in mean are also robustified by considering a general score function. The main advantage of the proposed approach is that the variance of the observations neither has to be known nor estimated. The asymptotic distribution of the test statistic under the no change null hypothesis is derived. Moreover, we prove the consistency of the test under the alternatives. A block bootstrap method is developed in order to obtain better approximations for the test’s critical values. The validity of the bootstrap algorithm is shown. The results are illustrated through a simulation study, which demonstrates computational efficiency of the procedures. A practical application to real data is presented as well.  相似文献

It is shown that bootstrap methods for estimating the distribution of the Studentized mean produce consistent estimators in quite general contexts, demanding not a lot more than existence of finite mean. In particular, neither the sample mean (suitably normalized) nor the Studentized mean need converge in distribution. It is unnecessary to assume that the sampling distribution is in the domain of attraction of any limit law.Now at Michigan State University  相似文献

Summary This paper establishes the uniform closeness of a weighted residual empirical process to its natural estimate in the linear regression setting when the errors are Gaussian, or a function of Gaussian random variables, that are strictly stationary and long range dependent. This result is used to yield the asymptotic uniform linearity of a class of rank statistics in linear regression models with long range dependent errors. The latter result, in turn, yields the asymptotic distribution of the Jaeckel (1972) rank estimators. The paper also studies the least absolute deviation and a class of certain minimum distance estimators of regression parameters and the kernel type density estimators of the marginal error density when the errors are long range dependent.Research of this author was partly supported by the NSF grant: DMS-9102041  相似文献

Let X = (Xt, t 0) be a mean zero stationary Gaussian process with variance one, assumed to satisfy some conditions on its covariance function r. Central limit theorems and asymptotic variance formulas are provided for estimators of the square root of the second spectral moment of the process and for the number of maxima in an interval, with some applications in hydroscience. A consistent estimator of the asymptotic variance is proposed for the number of maxima.  相似文献

The asymptotic normality of U-statistics has so far been proved for iid data and under various mixing conditions such as absolute regularity, but not for strong mixing. We use a coupling technique introduced in 1983 by Bradley [R.C. Bradley, Approximation theorems for strongly mixing random variables, Michigan Math. J. 30 (1983),69–81] to prove a new generalized covariance inequality similar to Yoshihara’s [K. Yoshihara, Limiting behavior of U-statistics for stationary, absolutely regular processes, Z. Wahrsch. Verw. Gebiete 35 (1976), 237–252]. It follows from the Hoeffding-decomposition and this inequality that U-statistics of strongly mixing observations converge to a normal limit if the kernel of the U-statistic fulfills some moment and continuity conditions. The validity of the bootstrap for U-statistics has until now only been established in the case of iid data (see [P.J. Bickel, D.A. Freedman, Some asymptotic theory for the bootstrap, Ann. Statist. 9 (1981), 1196–1217]. For mixing data, Politis and Romano [D.N. Politis, J.P. Romano, A circular block resampling procedure for stationary data, in: R. Lepage, L. Billard (Eds.), Exploring the Limits of Bootstrap, Wiley, New York, 1992, pp. 263–270] proposed the circular block bootstrap, which leads to a consistent estimation of the sample mean’s distribution. We extend these results to U-statistics of weakly dependent data and prove a CLT for the circular block bootstrap version of U-statistics under absolute regularity and strong mixing. We also calculate a rate of convergence for the bootstrap variance estimator of a U-statistic and give some simulation results.  相似文献

Varying-coefficient models with longitudinal observations are very useful in epidemiology and some other practical fields. In this paper,a reducing component procedure is proposed for es- timating the unknown functions and their derivatives in very general models,in which the unknown coefficient functions admit different or the same degrees of smoothness and the covariates can be time- dependent. The asymptotic properties of the estimators, such as consistency, rate of convergence and asymptotic distribution, are derived. The asymptotic results show that the asymptotic variance of the reducing component estimators is smaller than that of the existing estimators when the coefficient functions admit different degrees of smoothness.Finite sample properties of our procedures are studied through Monte Carlo simulations.  相似文献
