Classical orthogonal polynomials in two variables can be characterized as the polynomial solutions of a matrix second-order partial differential equation involving matrix polynomial coefficients. In this work, we study classical orthogonal polynomials in two variables whose partial derivatives satisfy again a second-order partial differential equation of the same type.  相似文献

For a bilinear form obtained by adding a Dirac mass to a positive definite moment functional defined in the linear space of polynomials in several variables, explicit formulas of orthogonal polynomials are derived from the orthogonal polynomials associated with the moment functional. Explicit formula for the reproducing kernel is also derived and used to establish certain inequalities for classical orthogonal polynomials.  相似文献

Matrix orthogonal polynomials whose derivatives are also orthogonal   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
In this paper we prove some characterizations of the matrix orthogonal polynomials whose derivatives are also orthogonal, which generalize other known ones in the scalar case. In particular, we prove that the corresponding orthogonality matrix functional is characterized by a Pearson-type equation with two matrix polynomials of degree not greater than 2 and 1. The proofs are given for a general sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials, not necessarily associated with a hermitian functional. We give several examples of non-diagonalizable positive definite weight matrices satisfying a Pearson-type equation, which show that the previous results are non-trivial even in the positive definite case.A detailed analysis is made for the class of matrix functionals which satisfy a Pearson-type equation whose polynomial of degree not greater than 2 is scalar. We characterize the Pearson-type equations of this kind that yield a sequence of matrix orthogonal polynomials, and we prove that these matrix orthogonal polynomials satisfy a second order differential equation even in the non-hermitian case. Finally, we prove and improve a conjecture of Durán and Grünbaum concerning the triviality of this class in the positive definite case, while some examples show the non-triviality for hermitian functionals which are not positive definite.  相似文献

In 1975, Tom Koornwinder studied examples of two variable analogues of the Jacobi polynomials in two variables. Those orthogonal polynomials are eigenfunctions of two commuting and algebraically independent partial differential operators. Some of these examples are well known classical orthogonal polynomials in two variables, such as orthogonal polynomials on the unit ball, on the simplex or the tensor product of Jacobi polynomials in one variable, but the remaining cases are not considered classical by other authors. The definition of classical orthogonal polynomials considered in this work provides a different perspective on the subject. We analyze in detail Koornwinder polynomials and using the Koornwinder tools, new examples of orthogonal polynomials in two variables are given.  相似文献

Abstract. We consider polynomials which are orthogonal with respect to weight functions, which are defined in terms of the modified Bessel function I ν and which are related to the noncentral χ 2 -distribution. It turns out that it is the most convenient to use two weight functions with indices ν and ν+1 and to study orthogonality with respect to these two weights simultaneously. We show that the corresponding multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I and type II exist and give several properties of these polynomials (differential properties, Rodrigues formula, explicit formulas, recurrence relation, differential equation, and generating functions).  相似文献

We consider the problem of evaluating discriminants of general orthogonal polynomials. It is shown that for a general class of weight functions, the functions of the second kind and the orthogonal polynomials are linear independent solutions of the same second order differential equation. We derive a linear fourth-order differential equation satisfied by the numerator polynomials and give two additional linear independent solutions.  相似文献

We derive raising and lowering operators for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle and find second order differential and q-difference equations for these polynomials. A general functional equation is found which allows one to relate the zeros of the orthogonal polynomials to the stationary values of an explicit quasi-energy and implies recurrences on the orthogonal polynomial coefficients. We also evaluate the discriminants and quantized discriminants of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle.  相似文献

We construct and study orthogonal bases of generalized polynomials on the space of Hermitian matrices. They are obtained by the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process from the Schur polynomials. A Berezin-Karpelevich type formula is given for these multivariate polynomials. The normalization of the orthogonal polynomials of Hermitian matrix argument and expansions in such polynomials are investigated.  相似文献

We state and prove characterization theorem for semi-classical orthogonal polynomials on nonuniform lattices (quadratic lattices of a discrete or q-discrete variable). This theorem proves the equivalence between the four characterization properties, namely, the Pearson type equation for the linear functional, the strictly quasi-orthogonality of the derivatives, the structure relation, and the Riccati equation for the formal Stieltjes function. We give the classification of the semi-classical linear functional of class one on nonuniform lattice. Using the definition and the properties of the associated orthogonal polynomials, we prove that semi-classical orthogonal polynomials satisfy the second-order divided difference equation on nonuniform lattices.  相似文献

A four-parameter family of orthogonal polynomials in two discrete variables is defined for a weight function of basic hypergeometric type. The polynomials, which are expressed in terms of univariate big q-Jacobi polynomials, form an extension of Dunkl’s bivariate (little) q-Jacobi polynomials [C.F. Dunkl, Orthogonal polynomials in two variables of q-Hahn and q-Jacobi type, SIAM J. Algebr. Discrete Methods 1 (1980) 137-151]. We prove orthogonality property of the new polynomials, and show that they satisfy a three-term relation in a vector-matrix notation, as well as a second-order partial q-difference equation.  相似文献

Sobolev orthogonal polynomials in two variables are defined via inner products involving gradients. Such a kind of inner product appears in connection with several physical and technical problems. Matrix second-order partial differential equations satisfied by Sobolev orthogonal polynomials are studied. In particular, we explore the connection between the coefficients of the second-order partial differential operator and the moment functionals defining the Sobolev inner product. Finally, some old and new examples are given.  相似文献

Orthogonal polynomials on the real line always satisfy a three-term recurrence relation. The recurrence coefficients determine a tridiagonal semi-infinite matrix (Jacobi matrix) which uniquely characterizes the orthogonal polynomials. We investigate new orthogonal polynomials by adding to the Jacobi matrixrnew rows and columns, so that the original Jacobi matrix is shifted downward. Thernew rows and columns contain 2rnew parameters and the newly obtained orthogonal polynomials thus correspond to an upward extension of the Jacobi matrix. We give an explicit expression of the new orthogonal polynomials in terms of the original orthogonal polynomials, their associated polynomials, and the 2rnew parameters, and we give a fourth order differential equation for these new polynomials when the original orthogonal polynomials are classical. Furthermore we show how the 1?orthogonalizing measure for these new orthogonal polynomials can be obtained and work out the details for a one-parameter family of Jacobi polynomials for which the associated polynomials are again Jacobi polynomials.  相似文献

We characterize the so-called classical orthogonal polynomials (Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi, and Bessel) using the distributional differential equation D(u)=u. This result is naturally not new. However, other characterizations of classical orthogonal polynomials can be obtained more easily from this approach. Moreover, three new properties are obtained.  相似文献

It is well known that the zeros of orthogonal polynomials interlace. In this paper we study the case of multiple orthogonal polynomials. We recall known results and some recursion relations for multiple orthogonal polynomials. Our main result gives a sufficient condition, based on the coefficients in the recurrence relations, for the interlacing of the zeros of neighboring multiple orthogonal polynomials. We give several examples illustrating our result.  相似文献

In this paper a general theory of semi‐classical d‐orthogonal polynomials is developed. We define the semi‐classical linear functionals by means of a distributional equation , where Φ and Ψ are matrix polynomials. Several characterizations for these semi‐classical functionals are given in terms of the corresponding d‐orthogonal polynomials sequence. They involve a quasi‐orthogonality property for their derivatives and some finite‐type relations.  相似文献

The main object of this paper is to construct a two-variable analogue of Jacobi polynomials and to give some properties of these polynomials. We show that these polynomials are orthogonal, then we obtain various recurrence formulas for them. Furthermore, we give some integral representations for these polynomials.  相似文献

Summary. This paper studies polynomials used in polynomial preconditioning for solving linear systems of equations. Optimum preconditioning polynomials are obtained by solving some constrained minimax approximation problems. The resulting residual polynomials are referred to as the de Boor-Rice and Grcar polynomials. It will be shown in this paper that the de Boor-Rice and Grcar polynomials are orthogonal polynomials over several intervals. More specifically, each de Boor-Rice or Grcar polynomial belongs to an orthogonal family, but the orthogonal family varies with the polynomial. This orthogonality property is important, because it enables one to generate the minimax preconditioning polynomials by three-term recursive relations. Some results on the convergence properties of certain preconditioning polynomials are also presented. Received February 1, 1992/Revised version received July 7, 1993  相似文献

In this paper, extensions of several relations linking differences of bivariate discrete orthogonal polynomials and polynomials themselves are given, by using an appropriate vector–matrix notation. Three-term recurrence relations are presented for the partial differences of the monic polynomial solutions of admissible second order partial difference equation of hypergeometric type. Structure relations, difference representations as well as lowering and raising operators are obtained. Finally, expressions for all matrix coefficients appearing in these finite-type relations are explicitly presented for a finite set of Hahn and Kravchuk orthogonal polynomials.  相似文献

We define and study biorthogonal sequences of polynomials over noncommutative rings, generalizing previous treatments of biorthogonal polynomials over commutative rings and of orthogonal polynomials over noncommutative rings. We extend known recurrence relations for specific cases of biorthogonal polynomials and prove a general version of Favard?s theorem.  相似文献
