Polar cographs
A graph is (s, k)-polar if there exists a partition A, B of its vertex set such that A induces a complete s-partite graph and B a disjoint union of at most k cliques. Recognizing a polar graph is known to be NP-complete. Here we consider the class of polar graphs which are also cographs. We provide polynomial time algorithms and forbidden subgraphs characterizations for problems related to polar cographs.  相似文献

A graph is polar if the vertex set can be partitioned into A and B in such a way that the subgraph induced by A is a complete multipartite graph and the subgraph induced by B is a disjoint union of cliques. Polar graphs are a common generalization of bipartite, cobipartite, and split graphs. However, recognizing polar graphs is an NP-complete problem in general. This led to the study of the polarity of special classes of graphs such as cographs and chordal graphs, cf. Ekim et al. (2008) [7] and [5]. In this paper, we study the polarity of line graphs and call a graph line-polar if its line graph is polar. We characterize line-polar bipartite graphs in terms of forbidden subgraphs. This answers a question raised in the fist reference mentioned above. Our characterization has already been used to develop a linear time algorithm for recognizing line-polar bipartite graphs, cf. Ekim (submitted for publication) [6].  相似文献

A graph is balanced if its clique-matrix contains no edge–vertex incidence matrix of an odd chordless cycle as a submatrix. While a forbidden induced subgraph characterization of balanced graphs is known, there is no such characterization by minimal forbidden induced subgraphs. In this work, we provide minimal forbidden induced subgraph characterizations of balanced graphs restricted to graphs that belong to one of the following graph classes: complements of bipartite graphs, line graphs of multigraphs, and complements of line graphs of multigraphs. These characterizations lead to linear-time recognition algorithms for balanced graphs within the same three graph classes.  相似文献

An orthogonal ray graph is an intersection graph of horizontal and vertical rays (half-lines) in the xy-plane. An orthogonal ray graph is a 2-directional orthogonal ray graph if all the horizontal rays extend in the positive x-direction and all the vertical rays extend in the positive y-direction. We first show that the class of orthogonal ray graphs is a proper subset of the class of unit grid intersection graphs. We next provide several characterizations of 2-directional orthogonal ray graphs. Our first characterization is based on forbidden submatrices. A characterization in terms of a vertex ordering follows immediately. Next, we show that 2-directional orthogonal ray graphs are exactly those bipartite graphs whose complements are circular arc graphs. This characterization implies polynomial-time recognition and isomorphism algorithms for 2-directional orthogonal ray graphs. It also leads to a characterization of 2-directional orthogonal ray graphs by a list of forbidden induced subgraphs. We also show a characterization of 2-directional orthogonal ray trees, which implies a linear-time algorithm to recognize such trees. Our results settle an open question of deciding whether a (0,1)-matrix can be permuted to avoid the submatrices .  相似文献

A matching covered graph is a non-trivial connected graph in which every edge is in some perfect matching. A non-bipartite matching covered graph G is near-bipartite if there are two edges e1 and e2 such that Ge1e2 is bipartite and matching covered. In 2000, Fischer and Little characterized Pfaffian near-bipartite graphs in terms of forbidden subgraphs [I. Fischer, C.H.C. Little, A characterization of Pfaffian near bipartite graphs, J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 82 (2001) 175-222.]. However, their characterization does not imply a polynomial time algorithm to recognize near-bipartite Pfaffian graphs. In this article, we give such an algorithm. We define a more general class of matching covered graphs, which we call weakly near-bipartite graphs. This class includes the near-bipartite graphs. We give a polynomial algorithm for recognizing weakly near-bipartite Pfaffian graphs. We also show that Fischer and Little’s characterization of near-bipartite Pfaffian graphs extends to this wider class.  相似文献

A clique-transversal of a graph G is a subset of vertices that meets all the cliques of G. A clique-independent set is a collection of pairwise vertex-disjoint cliques. A graph G is clique-perfect if the sizes of a minimum clique-transversal and a maximum clique-independent set are equal for every induced subgraph of G. The list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for the class of clique-perfect graphs is not known. Another open question concerning clique-perfect graphs is the complexity of the recognition problem. Recently we were able to characterize clique-perfect graphs by a restricted list of forbidden induced subgraphs when the graph belongs to two different subclasses of claw-free graphs. These characterizations lead to polynomial time recognition of clique-perfect graphs in these classes of graphs. In this paper we solve the characterization problem in two new classes of graphs: diamond-free and Helly circular-arc () graphs. This last characterization leads to a polynomial time recognition algorithm for clique-perfect graphs.  相似文献

On bipartite zero-divisor graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A (finite or infinite) complete bipartite graph together with some end vertices all adjacent to a common vertex is called a complete bipartite graph with a horn. For any bipartite graph G, we show that G is the graph of a commutative semigroup with 0 if and only if it is one of the following graphs: star graph, two-star graph, complete bipartite graph, complete bipartite graph with a horn. We also prove that a zero-divisor graph is bipartite if and only if it contains no triangles. In addition, we give all corresponding zero-divisor semigroups of a class of complete bipartite graphs with a horn and determine which complete r-partite graphs with a horn have a corresponding semigroup for r≥3.  相似文献

A circular‐arc graph is the intersection graph of a family of arcs on a circle. A characterization by forbidden induced subgraphs for this class of graphs is not known, and in this work we present a partial result in this direction. We characterize circular‐arc graphs by a list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs when the graph belongs to any of the following classes: P4 ‐free graphs, paw‐free graphs, claw‐free chordal graphs and diamond‐free graphs. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The matching number of a graph is the maximum size of a set of vertex-disjoint edges. The transversal number is the minimum number of vertices needed to meet every edge. A graph has the König–Egerváry property  if its matching number equals its transversal number. Lovász proved a characterization of graphs having the König–Egerváry property by means of forbidden subgraphs within graphs with a perfect matching. Korach, Nguyen, and Peis proposed an extension of Lovász’s result to a characterization of all graphs having the König–Egerváry property in terms of forbidden configurations (which are certain arrangements of a subgraph and a maximum matching). In this work, we prove a characterization of graphs having the König–Egerváry property by means of forbidden subgraphs which is a strengthened version of the characterization by Korach et al. Using our characterization of graphs with the König–Egerváry property, we also prove a forbidden subgraph characterization for the class of edge-perfect graphs.  相似文献

Let G be a minimally k-connected graph with n nodes and m edges. Mader proved that if n?3k-2 then m?k(n-k), and for n?3k-1 an equality is possible if, and only if, G is the complete bipartite graph Kk,n-k. Cai proved that if n?3k-2 then m?⌊(n+k)2/8⌋, and listed the cases when this bound is tight. In this paper we prove a more general theorem, which implies similar results for minimally k-outconnected graphs; a graph is called k-outconnected from r if it contains k internally disjoint paths from r to every other node.  相似文献

Ore defined a graph to be geodetic if and only if there is a unique shortest path between two points, and posed the problem of characterizing such graphs. Here this problem is studied in the context of oriented graphs and such geodetic orientations are characterized first for complete graphs (geodetic tournaments), then for complete bipartite and complete tripartite graphs, and finally for complete k-partite graphs.  相似文献

A circle graph is the intersection graph of a family of chords on a circle. There is no known characterization of circle graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs that do not involve the notions of local equivalence or pivoting operations. We characterize circle graphs by a list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs when the graph belongs to one of the following classes: linear domino graphs, P4-tidy graphs, and tree-cographs. We also completely characterize by minimal forbidden induced subgraphs the class of unit Helly circle graphs, which are those circle graphs having a model whose chords have all the same length, are pairwise different, and satisfy the Helly property.  相似文献

Polar graphs generalise bipartite graphs, cobipartite graphs, and split graphs, and they constitute a special type of matrix partitions. A graph is polar if its vertex set can be partitioned into two, such that one part induces a complete multipartite graph and the other part induces a disjoint union of complete graphs. Deciding whether a given arbitrary graph is polar, is an NPNP-complete problem. Here, we show that for permutation graphs this problem can be solved in polynomial time. The result is surprising, as related problems like achromatic number and cochromatic number are NPNP-complete on permutation graphs. We give a polynomial-time algorithm for recognising graphs that are both permutation and polar. Prior to our result, polarity has been resolved only for chordal graphs and cographs.  相似文献

A clique-transversal of a graph G is a subset of vertices that meets all the cliques of G. A clique-independent set is a collection of pairwise vertex-disjoint cliques. The clique-transversal number and clique-independence number of G are the sizes of a minimum clique-transversal and a maximum clique-independent set of G, respectively. A graph G is clique-perfect if these two numbers are equal for every induced subgraph of G. The list of minimal forbidden induced subgraphs for the class of clique-perfect graphs is not known. In this paper, we present a partial result in this direction; that is, we characterize clique-perfect graphs by a restricted list of forbidden induced subgraphs when the graph belongs to two different subclasses of claw-free graphs.  相似文献

In this article, we study the problem of deciding if, for a fixed graph H, a given graph is switching equivalent to an H‐free graph. Polynomial‐time algorithms are known for H having at most three vertices or isomorphic to P4. We show that for H isomorphic to a claw, the problem is polynomial, too. On the other hand, we give infinitely many graphs H such that the problem is NP‐complete, thus solving an open problem [Kratochvíl, Ne?et?il and Zýka, Ann Discrete Math 51 (1992)]. Further, we give a characterization of graphs switching equivalent to a K1, 2‐free graph by ten forbidden‐induced subgraphs, each having five vertices. We also give the forbidden‐induced subgraphs for graphs switching equivalent to a forest of bounded vertex degrees.  相似文献

Weakly quasi-threshold graphs form a proper subclass of the well-known class of cographs by restricting the join operation. In this paper we characterize weakly quasi-threshold graphs by a finite set of forbidden subgraphs: the class of weakly quasi-threshold graphs coincides with the class of {P 4, co-(2P 3)}-free graphs. Moreover we give the first linear-time algorithm to decide whether a given graph belongs to the class of weakly quasi-threshold graphs, improving the previously known running time. Based on the simplicity of our recognition algorithm, we can provide certificates of membership (a structure that characterizes weakly quasi-threshold graphs) or non-membership (forbidden induced subgraphs) in additional ${{\mathcal O}(n)}$ time. Furthermore we give a linear-time algorithm for finding the largest induced weakly quasi-threshold subgraph in a cograph.  相似文献

A path graph is the intersection graph of subpaths of a tree. In 1970, Renz asked for a characterization of path graphs by forbidden induced subgraphs. We answer this question by determining the complete list of graphs that are not path graphs and are minimal with this property. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Let n and k be integers with nk≥0. This paper presents a new class of graphs H(n,k), which contains hypercubes and some well-known graphs, such as Johnson graphs, Kneser graphs and Petersen graph, as its subgraphs. The authors present some results of algebraic and topological properties of H(n,k). For example, H(n,k) is a Cayley graph, the automorphism group of H(n,k) contains a subgroup of order 2nn! and H(n,k) has a maximal connectivity and is hamiltonian if k is odd; it consists of two isomorphic connected components if k is even. Moreover, the diameter of H(n,k) is determined if k is odd.  相似文献

Let r, k be positive integers, s(<r), a nonnegative integer, and n=2r-s+k. The set of r-subsets of [n]={1,2,…,n} is denoted by [n]r. The generalized Kneser graph K(n,r,s) is the graph whose vertex-set is [n]r where two r-subsets A and B are joined by an edge if |AB|?s. This note determines the diameter of generalized Kneser graphs. More precisely, the diameter of K(n,r,s) is equal to , which generalizes a result of Valencia-Pabon and Vera [On the diameter of Kneser graphs, Discrete Math. 305 (2005) 383-385].  相似文献
