On polynomial products in nilpotent and solvable Lie groups

We are dealing with Lie groups which are diffeomorphic to , for some . After identifying with , the multiplication on can be seen as a map . We show that if is a polynomial map in one of the two (sets of) variables or , then is solvable. Moreover, if one knows that is polynomial in one of the variables, the group is nilpotent if and only if is polynomial in both its variables.

     

Every set of finite Hausdorff measure is a countable union of sets whose Hausdorff measure and content coincide

A set is -straight if has finite Hausdorff -measure equal to its Hausdorff -content, where is continuous and non-decreasing with . Here, if satisfies the standard doubling condition, then every set of finite Hausdorff -measure in is shown to be a countable union of -straight sets. This also settles a conjecture of Foran that when , every set of finite -measure is a countable union of -straight sets.

     

On the use of the topological degree theory in broken orbits analysis

Dynamical systems in are studied. Let be a bounded open set. We will be interested in those periodic orbits such that at least one of its points lies inside and at least one of its points lies outside ; the orbits with this property are called -broken. Information about the structure of the set of -broken orbits is suggested; results are formulated in terms of topological degree theory.

     

Algebraic structures determined by 3 by 3 matrix geometry

Using a ``3 by 3 matrix trick' we show that multiplication (an algebraic structure) in a *-algebra is determined by the geometry of the *-algebra of the 3 by 3 matrices with entries from , . This is an example of an algebra-geometry duality which, we claim, has applications.

     

Weighted holomorphic spaces with trivial closed range multiplication operators

We deal with the space consisting of those analytic functions on the unit disc such that , with . We determine the critical rate of decay of such that the pointwise multiplication operator , and analytic, has closed range in only in the trivial case that is the product of an invertible function in and a finite Blaschke product.

     

A function space -compact space

Assuming that the minimal cardinality of a dominating family in is equal to , we construct a subset of a real line such that the space of continuous real-valued functions on does not admit any continuous bijection onto a -compact space. This gives a consistent answer to a question of Arhangel'skii.

     

Extremal metrics for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian in a conformal class

Let be a compact manifold. First, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian metric on to be extremal for with respect to conformal deformations of fixed volume. In particular, these conditions show that for any lattice of , the flat metric induced on from the standard metric of is extremal (in the previous sense). In the second part, we give, for any , an upper bound of on the conformal class of and exhibit a class of lattices for which the metric maximizes on its conformal class.

     

Isolated invariant curves of a foliation

We bound the equisingularity type of the set of isolated separatrices of a holomorphic foliation of in terms of the Milnor number of . This result gives a bound for the degree of an algebraic invariant curve of a foliation of in terms of the degree of , provided that all the branches of are isolated separatrices.

     

Universal -lattices of minimal rank

Let be the minimal rank of -universal -lattices, by which we mean positive definite -lattices which represent all positive -lattices of rank . It is a well known fact that for . In this paper, we determine and find all -universal lattices of rank for .

     

The -indices of Tsirelson type spaces

If and are countable ordinals such that , denote by the completion of with respect to the implicitly defined norm

Small covers of the dodecahedron and the -cell

Let be the right-angled hyperbolic dodecahedron or -cell, and let be the group generated by reflections across codimension-one faces of . We prove that if is a torsion free subgroup of minimal index, then the corresponding hyperbolic manifold is determined up to homeomorphism by modulo symmetries of .

     

Graphs that are not complete pluripolar

Let be domains in . Under very mild conditions on we show that there exist holomorphic functions , defined on with the property that is nowhere extendible across , while the graph of over is not complete pluripolar in . This refutes a conjecture of Levenberg, Martin and Poletsky (1992).

     

On commutators of fractional integrals

Let be the infinitesimal generator of an analytic semigroup on with Gaussian kernel bounds, and let be the fractional integrals of for . For a BMO function on , we show boundedness of the commutators from to , where . Our result of this boundedness still holds when is replaced by a Lipschitz domain of with infinite measure. We give applications to large classes of differential operators such as the magnetic Schrödinger operators and second-order elliptic operators of divergence form.

     

On functions whose graph is a Hamel basis

We say that a function is a Hamel function ( ) if , considered as a subset of , is a Hamel basis for . We prove that every function from into can be represented as a pointwise sum of two Hamel functions. The latter is equivalent to the statement: for all there is a such that . We show that this fails for infinitely many functions.

     

A note on Gabor orthonormal bases

The study of Gabor bases of the form for has interested many mathematicians in recent years. Alex Losevich and Steen Pedersen in 1998, Jeffery C. Lagarias, James A. Reeds and Yang Wang in 2000 independently proved that, for any fixed positive integer , is an orthonormal basis for if and only if is a tiling of . Palle E. T. Jorgensen and Steen Pedersen in 1999 gave an explicit characterization of such for , , . Inspired by their work, this paper addresses Gabor orthonormal bases of the form for and some other related problems, where is as above. For a fixed , the generating function of a Gabor orthonormal basis for corresponding to the above is characterized explicitly provided that , which is new even if ; a Shannon type sampling theorem about such is derived when , ; for an arbitrary positive integer , an explicit expression of the with being an orthonormal basis for is obtained under the condition that .

     

A note on invertibility preservers on Banach algebras

Let be be semisimple Banach algebras and let be a unital bijective linear operator that preserves invertibility. If the socle of is an essential ideal of , then is a Jordan isomorphism.

     

Farrell sets for harmonic functions

Let denote a relatively closed subset of the unit ball of . The purpose of this paper is to characterize those sets which have the following property: any harmonic function on which satisfies on (where 0$">) can be locally uniformly approximated on by a sequence of harmonic polynomials which satisfy the same inequality on . This answers a question posed by Stray, who had earlier solved the corresponding problem for holomorphic functions on the unit disc.

     

-function of an operator: A white noise approach

Let be the canonical framework of white noise analysis over the Gel'fand triple and be the space of continuous linear operators from to . Let be a self-adjoint operator in with spectral representation . In this paper, it is proved that under appropriate conditions upon , there exists a unique linear mapping such that for each . The mapping is then naturally used to define as , where is the Dirac -function. Finally, properties of the mapping are investigated and several results are obtained.

     

Behavior of the Bergman kernel and metric near convex boundary points

The boundary behavior of the Bergman metric near a convex boundary point of a pseudoconvex domain is studied. It turns out that the Bergman metric at points in the direction of a fixed vector tends to infinity, when is approaching , if and only if the boundary of does not contain any analytic disc through in the direction of .
