We will establish the following improved Krasnosel'skii theorems for the dimension of the kernel of a starshaped set: For each k and d, 0 k d, define f(d,k) = d+1 if k = 0 and f(d,k) = max{d+1,2d–2k+2} if 1 k d.Theorem 1. Let S be a compact, connected, locally starshaped set in Rd, S not convex. Then for a k with 0 k d, dim ker S k if and only if every f(d, k) lnc points of S are clearly visible from a common k-dimensional subset of S.Theorem 2. Let S be a nonempty compact set in Rd. Then for a k with 0 k d, dim ker S k if and only if every f (d, k) boundary points of S are clearly visible from a common k-dimensional subset of S. In each case, the number f(d, k) is best possible for every d and k.  相似文献

Let S be an arbitrary nonempty set in Rd. The following results are true for every k, 0kd: the dimension of ker S is at least k if and only if every countable family of boundary points of S is clearly visible from a common k-dimensional neighborhood in S. Similarly, ker S contains a k-dimensional -neighborhood if and only if every countable family of boundary points of S is clearly visible from a common k-dimensional -neighborhood in S.In the plane, we have the following results concerning finitely starlike sets: for S an arbitrary nonempty set in R2, S is finitely starlike if every three points of cl S are clearly visible from a common point of S. In case S –R2 and int cl SS=, then S is finitely starlike if and only if every three points of S are visible from a common point of S. In each case, the number 3 is best possible.  相似文献

LetS be a finite union of boxes inR d . Forx inS, defineA x ={yx is clearly visible fromy via staircase paths inS}, and let KerS denote the staircase kernel ofS. Then KerS={A x x is a point of local nonconvexity ofS}. A similar result holds with clearly visible replaced by visible and points of local nonconvexity ofS replaced by boundary points ofS.Supported in part by NSF grant DMS-9207019.  相似文献

Let S be a subset of the plane. In case (int cl S) S = , then S is finitely starlike if and only if every 4 points of S see via S a common point. In case (int cl S) S has at most countably many components, each a singleton set, then S is finitely starlike if and only if every 5 points of S see via S a common point. Each of the numbers 4 and 5 is best possible. Examples show that these results fail without suitable restrictions on (int cl S) S. Moreover, a final example shows that if a general Krasnosel'skii number . exists to characterize finitely starlike sets in the plane, then > 9.  相似文献

It is proved for a nonempty proper subset S of a real topological linear space L that kerS ={convAz: z bdryS} and for a close connected nonconvex subset S of L that kerS ={convAz: z slncS}, where bdryS and slncS denote the sets of boundary points and strong local nonconvexity points of S, respectively, and Az = {s S: z is clearly visible from s via S}.This extends previous results and, combined with standard techniques, yields among others two Krasnosel'skii-type characterizations for the dimension of kerS in Rd in case of a nonempty proper set S with bdryS bounded and a closed connected nonconvex set S with lncS bounded. The assumption of boundedness of S turns out to be irrelevant in these criteria.Herrn Professor Dr. Wilhelm Stoll gewidmetResearch partially supported by the grant PB 2 1140 91 01  相似文献

Let S be a subset of R d . The set S is said to be an set if and only if for every two points x and y of S, there exists some z S such that [x, z] [z, y] S. Clearly every starshaped set is an set, yet the converse is false and introduces an interesting question: Under what conditions will an set S be almost starshaped; that is, when will there exist a convex subset C of S such that every point of S sees some point of C via SThis paper provides one answer to the question above, and we have the following result: Let S be a closed planar set, S simply connected, and assume that the set Q of points of local nonconvexity of S is finite. If some point p of S see each member of Q via S, then there is a convex subset C of S such that every point of S sees some point of C via S.  相似文献

Let and assume that there is a countable collection of lines {L i : 1 i} such that (int cl S) and ((int cl S) S) L i has one-dimensional Lebesgue measure zero, 1 i. Then every 4 point subset ofS sees viaS a set of positive two-dimensional Lebesgue measure if and only if every finite subset ofS sees viaS such a set. Furthermore, a parallel result holds with two-dimensional replaced by one-dimensional. Finally, setS is finitely starlike if and only if every 5 points ofS see viaS a common point. In each case, the number 4 or 5 is best possible.Supported in part by NSF grant DMS-8705336.  相似文献

Let f C[a, b]. LetP be a subset ofC[a, b], L b – a be a given real number. We say thatp P is a best approximation tof fromP, with arc length constraintL, ifA[p] b a [1 + (p(x)) 2]dx L andp – f q – f for allq P withA[q] L. represents an arbitrary norm onC[a, b]. The constraintA[p] L might be interpreted physically as a materials constraint. In this paper we consider the questions of existence, uniqueness and characterization of constrained best approximations. In addition a bound, independent of degree, is found for the arc length of a best unconstrained Chebyshev polynomial approximation. The work of L. L. For a convex body K d we investigate three associated bodies, its intersection body IK (for 0int K), cross-section body CK, and projection body IIK, which satisfy IKCKIIK. Conversely we prove CKconst1(d)I(K–x) for some xint K, and IIKconst2 (d)CK, for certain constants, the first constant being sharp. We estimate the maximal k-volume of sections of 1/2(K+(-K)) with k-planes parallel to a fixed k-plane by the analogous quantity for K; our inequality is, if only k is fixed, sharp. For L d a convex body, we take n random segments in L, and consider their Minkowski average D. We prove that, for V(L) fixed, the supremum of V(D) (with also nN arbitrary) is minimal for L an ellipsoid. This result implies the Petty projection inequality about max V((IIM)*), for M d a convex body, with V(M) fixed. We compare the volumes of projections of convex bodies and the volumes of the projections of their sections, and, dually, the volumes of sections of convex bodies and the volumes of sections of their circumscribed cylinders. For fixed n, the pth moments of V(D) (1p<) also are minimized, for V(L) fixed, by the ellipsoids. For k=2, the supremum (nN arbitrary) and the pth moment (n fixed) of V(D) are maximized for example by triangles, and, for L centrally symmetric, for example by parallelograms. Last we discuss some examples for cross-section bodies.Research (partially) supported by Hungarian National Foundation for Scientific Research, Grant No. 41.  相似文献

An abelian topological group is an group if and only if it is a locally -compactk-space and every compact subset in it is contained in a compactly generated locally compact subgroup. Every abelian groupG is topologically isomorphic to G 0 where 0 andG 0 is an abelian group where every compact subset is contained in a compact subgroup. Intrinsic definitions of measures, convolution of measures, measure algebra,L 1-algebra, Fourier transforms of abelian groups are given and their properties are studied.  相似文献

Thek-core of the setS n is the intersection of the convex hull of all setsA S with ¦SA¦<-k. The Caratheodory number of thek-core is the smallest integerf (d,k) with the property thatx core kS, S n implies the existence of a subsetT S such thatx corekT and ¦T¦f (d, k). In this paper various properties off(d, k) are established.Research of this author was partially supported by Hungarian National Science Foundation grant no. 1812.  相似文献

L. Bader, G. Lunardon and J. A. Thas have shown that a flock 0 of a quadratic cone in PG(3, q), q odd, determines a set ={0,1,...,q} of q+1 flocks. Each j , 1jq, is said to be derived from 0. We show that, by derivation, the flocks with q=3 e arising from the Ganley planes yield an inequivalent flock for q27. Further, we prove that the Fisher flocks (q odd, q5) are the unique nonlinear flocks for which (q–1)/2 planes of the flock contain a common line. This result is used to show that each of the flocks derived from a Fisher flock is again a Fisher flock. Finally, we prove that any set of q–1 pairwise disjoint nonsingular conics of a cone can be extended to a flock. All these results have implications for the theory of translation planes.  相似文献

Denoting by dimA the dimension of the affine hull of the setA, we prove that if {K i:i T} and {K i j :i T} are two finite families of convex sets inR n and if dim {K i :i S} = dim {K i j :i S}for eachS T such that|S| n + 1 then dim {K i :i T} = dim {K i : {i T}}.  相似文献

Let Sø be a bounded connected set in R 2, and assume that every 3 or fewer lnc points of S are clearly visible from a common point of S. Then for some point p in S, the set A{s : s in S and [p, s] S} is nowhere dense in S. Furthermore, when S is open, then S in starshaped.  相似文献

LetA be a subset of a balayage space (X,W) and a measure onX. It is shown that for every sequence n of measures such that limnn and limn n A = the limit measure is of the formf+[(1-f)]A for some (unique) Borel function 0f1Cb(A). Furthermore, conditions are given such that any such functionf occurs.  相似文献

Moser-type estimates for functions whose gradient is in the Lorentz space L(n, q), 1q, are given. Similar results are obtained for solutions uH inf0 sup1 of Au=(f i ) x i , where A is a linear elliptic second order differential operator and |f|L(n, q), 2q.Work partially supported by MURST (40%).  相似文献

Let S be a compact set in Rd. Let p be a fixed point of S and let k be a fixed integer, 1 k <d. Then S is starshaped with p ker S if and only if for every k-dimensional flat F through p, F S is starshaped. Moreover, an analogue of this result holds for unions of starshaped sets as well.  相似文献

Let XP be a variety (respectively an open subset of an analytic submanifold) and let xX be a point where all integer valued differential invariants are locally constant. We show that if the projective second fundamental form of X at x is isomorphic to the second fundamental form of a point of a Segre P× P, n,m2, a Grassmaniann G(2,n+2), n4, or the Cayley plane OP2, then X is the corresponding homogeneous variety (resp. an open subset of the corresponding homogeneous variety). The case of the Segre P2×P2 had been conjectured by Griffiths and Harris in [GH]. If the projective second fundamental form of X at x is isomorphic to the second fundamental form of a point of a Veronese v2(P) and the Fubini cubic form of X at x is zero, then X=v2 (P) (resp. an open subset of v2(P)). All these results are valid in the real or complex analytic categories and locally in the C category if one assumes the hypotheses hold in a neighborhood of any point x. As a byproduct, we show that the systems of quadrics I2(P P) S2C, I2(P1× P) S2C and I2(S5) S2C16 are stable in the sense that if A S* is an analytic family such that for t0,AA, then A0A. We also make some observations related to the Fulton–:Hansen connectedness theorem.  相似文献

Let Pn, nIN{0}, be probability measures on a-fieldA; fn, nIN{0}, be a family of uniformly boundedA-measurable functions andA n, nIN, be a sequence of sub--fields ofA, increasing or decreasing to the-fieldA o. It is shown in this paper that the conditional expectations converge in Po-measure to with k, n, m , if Pn|A, nIN, converges uniformly to Pn|A and fn, nIN, converges in Po-measure to fo.  相似文献

Summary According to convention, Hamburger's theorem (1921) says-roughly-that Riemann's (s) is uniquely determined by its functional equation. In 1944 Hecke pointed out that there are two distinct versions of Hamburger's theorem. Hecke's remark has led me, in examining just how rough the convention is, to prove that, with a weakening of certain auxiliary conditions, there are infinitely many linearly independent solutions of Riemann's functional equation (Theorem 1). In Theorem 1, as in Hamburger's theorem, the weight parameter is 1/2. In Theorem 2 we obtain stronger results when this parameter is 2: a Mittag-Leffler theorem for Dirichlet series with functional equations.Oblatum 23-XII-1992 & 9-IX-1993Research supported in part by NSA/MSP Grant MDA 90-H-4025 To the memory of Martin Eichler  相似文献
