Let Ω and Π be two finitely connected hyperbolic domains in the complex plane \Bbb C{\Bbb C} and let R(z, Ω) denote the hyperbolic radius of Ω at z and R(w, Π) the hyperbolic radius of Π at w. We consider functions f that are analytic in Ω and such that all values f(z) lie in the domain Π. This set of analytic functions is denoted by A(Ω, Π). We prove among other things that the quantities Cn(W,P) := supf ? A(W,P)supz ? W\frac|f(n)(z)| R(f(z),P)n! (R(z,W))nC_n(\Omega,\Pi)\,:=\,\sup_{f\in A(\Omega,\Pi)}\sup_{z\in \Omega}\frac{\vert f^{(n)}(z)\vert\,R(f(z),\Pi)}{n!\,(R(z,\Omega))^n} are finite for all n ? \Bbb N{n \in {\Bbb N}} if and only if ∂Ω and ∂Π do not contain isolated points.

Let Ω be an open set in ℝ n andE be a relatively closed subset of Ω. Further, letC e(E) be the collection of real-valued continuous functions onE which extend continuously to the closure ofE in ℝ n . We characterize those pairs (Ω,E) which have the following property: every function inC e(E) which is harmonic onE 0 can be uniformly approximated onE by functions which are harmonic on Ω and whose restrictions toE belong toC e(E).

This paper proves an index theorem of Toeplitz tuples on pseudoregular domains in Cn. Geometrically, the index of Toeplitz tuple TΦn is (-1)n time wrapping number of Φn around the origin. As one of the applications of the index theorem, we completely characterize the automorphism groups of Toeplitz algebras on Poincaré domain. As another application, it is shown that C*(Ω)C*(Bn) for every Poincare domain Ω in Cn(n≠2). It is also noticed that C*(Ω)C*(B2) if and only if the Poincaré conjecture is true for Ω.

Let P(D) be a partial differential operator with constant coefficients which is surjective on the space A(Ω) of real analytic functions on a covex open set Ω⊂ℝ n . Let L(P m ) denote the localizations at ∞ (in the sense of H?rmander) of the principal part P m . Then Q(x+iτN)≠ 0 for (x,τ)∈ℝ n ×(ℝ\{ 0}) for any QL(P m ) if N is a normal to δΩ which is noncharacteristic for Q. Under additional assumptions this implies that P m must be locally hyperbolic. Let Ω be an open subset of R d , d≥2, and let x∈Ω. A Jensen measure for x on Ω is a Borel probability measure μ, supported on a compact subset of Ω, such that ∫udμ≤u(x) for every superharmonic function u on Ω. Denote by J x (Ω) the family of Jensen measures for x on Ω. We present two characterizations of ext(J x (Ω)), the set of extreme elements of J x (Ω). The first is in terms of finely harmonic measures, and the second as limits of harmonic measures on decreasing sequences of domains. This allows us to relax the local boundedness condition in a previous result of B. Cole and T. Ransford, Jensen measures and harmonic measures, J. Reine Angew. Math. 541 (2001), 29–53. As an application, we give an improvement of a result by Khabibullin on the question of whether, given a complex sequence {α n } n=1 and a continuous function , there exists an entire function f≢0 satisfying f n )=0 for all n, and |f(z)|≤M(z) for all zC.

Let (G, I, N, S) be an affine topological Tits system, and let Γ be a torsion-free cocompact lattice in G. This article studies the coinvariants H 0(Γ; C(Ω,Z)), where Ω is the Furstenberg boundary of G. It is shown that the class [1] of the identity function in H 0(Γ; C(Ω, Z)) has finite order, with explicit bounds for the order. A similar statement applies to the K 0 group of the boundary crossed product C *-algebra C(Ω)Γ. If the Tits system has type ? 2, exact computations are given, both for the crossed product algebra and for the reduced group C *-algebra.

We give a decomposition of the Hardy space Hz^1(Ω) into "div-curl" quantities for Lipschitz domains in R^n. We also prove a decomposition of Hz^1(Ω) into Jacobians det Du, u ∈ W0^1,2 (Ω,R^2) for Ω in R^2. This partially answers a well-known open problem.

Let ℬ be a set ofn arbitrary (possibly intersecting) convex obstacles in ℝ d . It is shown that any two points which can be connected by a path avoiding the obstacles can also be connected by a path consisting ofO(n (d−1)[d/2+1]) segments. The bound cannot be improved below Ω(n d ); thus, in ℝ3, the answer is betweenn 3 andn 4. For open disjoint convex obstacles, a Θ(n) bound is proved. By a well-known reduction, the general case result also upper bounds the complexity for a translational motion of an arbitrary convex robot among convex obstacles. Asymptotically tight bounds and efficient algorithms are given in the planar case. We consider weights of Muckenhoupt classA q, 1<q<∞. For a bounded Lipschitz domain Ω⊂ℝn we prove a compact embedding and a Poincaré inequality in weighted Sobolev spaces. These technical tools allow us to solve the weak Neumann problem for the Laplace equation in weighted spaces on ℝn, ℝn +, on bounded and on exterior domains Ω with boundary of classC 1, which will yield the Helmholtz decomposition ofL ω q(Ω)n for general ω∈A q. This is done by transferring the method of Simader and Sohr [4] to the weighted case. Our result generalizes a result of Farwig and Sohr [2] where the Helmholtz decomposition ofL ω p(Ω)n is proved for an exterior domain and weights of Muckenhoupt class without singularities or degeneracies in a neighbourhood of ϖΩ.

LetM be a Kaehler manifold of real dimension 2n with holomorphic sectional curvatureK H≥4λ and antiholomorphic Ricci curvatureρ A≥(2n−2)λ, andP is a complex hypersurface. We give a bound for the quotient (volume ofP)/(volume ofM) and prove that this bound is attained if and only ifP=C P n−1(λ) andM=C P n(λ). Moreover, we give some results on the volume of of tubes aboutP inM. Work partially supported by a DGICYT Grant No. PS87-0115-CO3-01.

Let Ω be a bounded co.nvex domain in Rn(n≥3) and G(x,y) be the Green function of the Laplace operator -△ on Ω. Let hrp(Ω) = {f ∈ D'(Ω) :(E)F∈hp(Rn), s.t. F|Ω = f}, by the atom characterization of Local Hardy spaces in a bounded Lipschitz domain, the bound of f→(△)2(Gf) for every f ∈ hrp(Ω) is obtained, where n/(n 1)<p≤1.

Let n > 1 and let C n denote the complex n-dimensional Euclidean space. We prove several jet-interpolation results for nowhere degenerate entire mappings F:C nC n and for holomorphic automorphisms of C n on discrete subsets of C n.We also prove an interpolation theorem for proper holomorphic embeddings of Stein manifolds into C n.For each closed complex submanifold (or subvariety) M ⊂ C n of complex dimension m < n we construct a domain ΩC n containing M and a biholomorphic map F: Ω → C n onto C n with J F ≡ 1such that F(M) intersects the image of any nondegenerate entire map G:C n−mC n at infinitely many points. If m = n − 1, we construct F as above such that C nF(M) is hyperbolic. In particular, for each m ≥ 1we construct proper holomorphic embeddings F:C mC m−1 such that the complement C m+1F(C m )is hyperbolic.

It is known [8] that, whengL n (Ω) (Ω open and bounded inR n , with ≪regular≫ boundary∂Ω), any minimizer (K, w) of the functional among relatively closed subsetsC ofΩ and piecewise-constant functionsu onΩ/C, gives rise to a finite decomposition ofΩ/K. Here we exhibit a piecewise-constant functiong on the unit diskD ofR 2, with radial symmetry, such thatgL q (D) for all 1 ⩽q < 2 and the unique minimizer of F has infinitely many components. We also fill a gap occurred in the proof of Proposition 5.2 of [8].

Equivalences between the condition |P n (k) (x)|≦K(n −1√1−x 2+1/n 2) k n -a, whereP n(x) is the bestn-th degree polynomial approximation tof(x), and the Peetre interpolation space betweenC[−1,1] and the space (1−x 2) k f (2k)(x)∈C[−1,1] is established. Let Ω[ξ] denote the polynomial algebra (with 1) in commutative indeterminates {ie65-1}, 1 ≦i, jn, 1 ≦k < ∞, over a commutative ring Ω. Thealgebra of generic matrices Ω [Y] is defined to be the Ω-subalgebra ofM n (Ω[ξ]) generated by the matricesY k=({ie65-2}), 1 ≦i, jn, 1 ≦k < ∞. This algebra has been studied extensively by Amitsur and by Procesi in particular Amitsur has used it to construct a finite dimensional, central division algebra Ω (Y) which is not a crossed product. In this paper we shall prove, for Ω a domain, that Ω(Y) has exponentn in the Brauer group (Amitsur may already know this fact); consequently, for Ω an infinite field andn a multiple of 4, iff(X 1, …,X m) is a polynomial linear in all theX i but one (similar to Formanek’s central polynomials for matrix rings) andf 2 is central forM n (Ω), thenf is central forM n (Ω). (The existence of a polynomial not central forM n (Ω), but whose square is central forM n(Ω) is equivalent to every central division algebra of degreen containing a quadratic extension of its center; well-known theory immediately shows this is the case of 4‖n and 8χn.) Also, information is obtained about Ω(Y) for arbitary Ω, most notably that the Jacobson radical is the set of nilpotent elements. Let (Ω,F, P) be a probability space and {F n}n≥0 a regular increasing sequence of sub-σ-fields ofF. LetH 1(Ω) be the usual Hardy space ofF n-martingales. We show that the couple (H 1(Ω),L (Ω)) is a partial retract of (L 1(Ω),L (Ω)). It is also proved that (L p(Ω),BMO(Ω)) is a partial retract of (L p(Ω),L (Ω)) for all 1<p<∞.

Summary Let Ω cR n be an open set and let P be a linear partial differential operator with constant coefficients inR n. Then Ω is said to be P-convex if for each f ε C(Ω) there is a u ε D′(Ω) such that P(D)u=f. A complete geometric characterization of P-convex sets inR 3 is given when P is of principal type and when Ω has C2-boundary. As a step in the proof one also obtains necessary and sufficient conditions for uniqueness in the local Cauchy problem at simply characteristic points inR 3. The tools are a sophisticated use of the author's uniqueness cones on one hand and his semi-global nullsolutions on the other hand. Hints are given on the difficulties that may be encountered inR n for the same problem. Entrata in Redazione il 7 giugno 1978.

We say that a subset of Cn is hypoconvex if its complement is the union of complex hyperplanes. We say it is strictly hypoconvex if it is smoothly bounded hypoconvex and at every point of the boundary the real Hessian of its defining function is positive definite on the complex tangent space at that point. Let Bn be the open unit ball in Cn.Suppose K is a C compact manifold in ∂B1 × Cn, n > 1, diffeomorphic to ∂B1 × ∂Bn, each of whose fibers Kz over ∂B1 bounds a strictly hypoconvex connected open set. Let K be the polynomialhull of K. Then we show that K∖K is the union of graphs of analytic vector valued functions on B1. This result shows that an unnatural assumption regarding the deformability of K in an earlier version of this result is unnecessary. Next, we study an H optimization problem. If pis a C real-valued function on ∂B1× Cn, we show that the infimum γρ = infƒ∈H (B1)n ‖ρ(z, ƒ (z))‖ is attained by a unique bounded ƒ provided that the set (z, w) ∈ ∂B1 × C n|ρ(z, w) ≤ γρ has bounded connected strictly hypoconvex fibers over the circle.

Let τ be some triangulation of a planar polygonal domain Ω. Given a smooth functionu, we construct piecewise polynomial functionsvC ρ(Ω) of degreen=3 ρ for ρ odd, andn=3ρ+1 for ρ even on a subtriangulation τ3 of τ. The latter is obtained by subdividing eachT∈ρ into three triangles, andv/T is a composite triangular finite element, generalizing the classicalC 1 cubic Hsieh-Clough-Tocher (HCT) triangular scheme. The functionv interpolates the derivatives ofu up to order ρ at the vertices of τ. Polynomial degrees obtained in this way are minimal in the family of interpolation schemes based on finite elements of this type.

We study properties of free algebras in the Cantor varieties Cm,n. A free algebra of rank r in Cm,n is denoted FC m,n(r). We argue that the following hold: (1) any two Cm,n-free algebras FC m,n(r) and FC m,n(s) of ranks r and s, where r and s are arbitrary (finite or infinite) cardinals, r≥m, and s≥m, are elementary equivalent; (2) any two Cm,n-free algebras FC m,n(r) and FC m,n(s) of ranks r and s, where r and s are arbitrary (finite or infinite) cardinals, are universally equivalent, that is, share one ∀-theory; (3) an elementary theory Th(FC m,n(r)) for an arbitrary Cm,n-free algebra of (finite or infinite) rank r, treated in a signature Ω, is decidable; (4) an elementary theory Th(K) for an arbitrary nonempty class of free algebras in Cm,n, treated in a signature Ω, is decidable.
