Recently this author studied several merit functions systematically for the second-order cone complementarity problem. These merit functions were shown to enjoy some favorable properties, to provide error bounds under the condition of strong monotonicity, and to have bounded level sets under the conditions of monotonicity as well as strict feasibility. In this paper, we weaken the condition of strong monotonicity to the so-called uniform P *-property, which is a new concept recently developed for linear and nonlinear transformations on Euclidean Jordan algebra. Moreover, we replace the monotonicity and strict feasibility by the so-called R 01 or R 02-functions to keep the property of bounded level sets. The classes of P-, P 0-, R 0-, semimonotone, strictly semimonotone, column sufficient, and nondegenerate matrices play important roles in studying solution properties of equations and complementarity problems and convergence/complexity analysis of methods for solving these problems. It is known that the problem of deciding whether a square matrix with integer/rational entries is a P- (or nondegenerate) matrix is co-NP-complete. We show, through a unified analysis, that analogous decision problems for the other matrix classes are also co-NP-complete. Given a linear transformation L:? n →? n and a matrix Q∈? n , where ? n is the space of all symmetric real n×n matrices, we consider the semidefinite linear complementarity problem SDLCP(L,? n +,Q) over the cone ? n + of symmetric n×n positive semidefinite matrices. For such problems, we introduce the P-property and its variants, Q- and GUS-properties. For a matrix AR n×n , we consider the linear transformation L A :? n →? n defined by L A (X):=AX+XA T and show that the P- and Q-properties for L A are equivalent to A being positive stable, i.e., real parts of eigenvalues of A are positive. We obtain local estimates of the distance to a set defined by equality constraints under assumptions which are weaker than those previously used in the literature. Specifically, we assume that the constraints mapping has a Lipschitzian derivative, and satisfies a certain 2-regularity condition at the point under consideration. This setting directly subsumes the classical regular case and the twice differentiable 2-regular case, for which error bounds are known, but it is significantly richer than either of these two cases. When applied to a certain equation-based reformulation of the nonlinear complementarity problem, our results yield an error bound under an assumption more general than b-regularity. The latter appears to be the weakest assumption under which a local error bound for complementarity problems was previously available. We also discuss an application of our results to the convergence rate analysis of the exterior penalty method for solving irregular problems. Let VIP(F,C) denote the variational inequality problem associated with the mapping F and the closed convex set C. A second-order bundle method to minimize the maximum eigenvalue function   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In this paper we present a nonsmooth algorithm to minimize the maximum eigenvalue of matrices belonging to an affine subspace of n×n symmetric matrices. We show how a simple bundle method, the approximate eigenvalue method can be used to globalize the second-order method developed by M.L. Overton in the eighties and recently revisited in the framework of the ?-Lagrangian theory. With no additional assumption, the resulting algorithm generates a minimizing sequence. A geometrical and constructive proof is given. To prove that quadratic convergence is achieved asymptotically, some strict complementarity and non-degeneracy assumptions are needed. We give some sufficient conditions for proper lower semicontinuous functions on metric spaces to have error bounds (with exponents). For a proper convex function f on a normed space X the existence of a local error bound implies that of a global error bound. If in addition X is a Banach space, then error bounds can be characterized by the subdifferential of f. In a reflexive Banach space X, we further obtain several sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of error bounds in terms of the lower Dini derivative of f. Given an m×n integer matrix A of full row rank, we consider the problem of computing the maximum of ∥B -1 A2 where B varies over all bases of A. This quantity appears in various places in the mathematical programming literature. More recently, logarithm of this number was the determining factor in the complexity bound of Vavasis and Ye’s primal-dual interior-point algorithm. We prove that the problem of approximating this maximum norm, even within an exponential (in the dimension of A) factor, is NP-hard. Our proof is based on a closely related result of L. The quadratic assignment problem (QAP) is among the hardest combinatorial optimization problems. Some instances of size n = 30 have remained unsolved for decades. The solution of these problems requires both improvements in mathematical programming algorithms and the utilization of powerful computational platforms. In this article we describe a novel approach to solve QAPs using a state-of-the-art branch-and-bound algorithm running on a federation of geographically distributed resources known as a computational grid. Solution of QAPs of unprecedented complexity, including the nug30, kra30b, and tho30 instances, is reported. We present a predictor–corrector non–interior path following algorithm for the monotone linear complementarity problem based on Chen–Harker–Kanzow–Smale smoothing techniques. Although the method is modeled on the interior point predictor–corrector strategies, it is the first instance of a non–interior point predictor–corrector algorithm. The algorithm is shown to be both globally linearly convergent and locally quadratically convergent under standard hypotheses. The approach to global linear convergence follows the authors’ previous work on this problem for the case of (P 0+R 0) LCPs. However, in this paper we use monotonicity to refine our notion of neighborhood of the central path. The refined neighborhood allows us to establish the uniform boundedness of certain slices of the neighborhood of the central path under the standard hypothesis that a strictly positive feasible point exists. We consider a Neumann problem of the type -εΔu+F (u(x))=0 in an open bounded subset Ω of R n , where F is a real function which has exactly k maximum points. Using Morse theory we find that, for ε suitably small, there are at least 2k nontrivial solutions of the problem and we give some qualitative information about them. A conic linear system is a system of the form?P(d): find x that solves b - AxC Y , xC X ,? where C X and C Y are closed convex cones, and the data for the system is d=(A,b). This system is“well-posed” to the extent that (small) changes in the data (A,b) do not alter the status of the system (the system remains solvable or not). Renegar defined the “distance to ill-posedness”, ρ(d), to be the smallest change in the data Δd=(ΔAb) for which the system P(dd) is “ill-posed”, i.e., dd is in the intersection of the closure of feasible and infeasible instances d’=(A’,b’) of P(·). Renegar also defined the “condition measure” of the data instance d as C(d):=∥d∥/ρ(d), and showed that this measure is a natural extension of the familiar condition measure associated with systems of linear equations. This study presents two categories of results related to ρ(d), the distance to ill-posedness, and C(d), the condition measure of d. The first category of results involves the approximation of ρ(d) as the optimal value of certain mathematical programs. We present ten different mathematical programs each of whose optimal values provides an approximation of ρ(d) to within certain constants, depending on whether P(d) is feasible or not, and where the constants depend on properties of the cones and the norms used. The second category of results involves the existence of certain inscribed and intersecting balls involving the feasible region of P(d) or the feasible region of its alternative system, in the spirit of the ellipsoid algorithm. These results roughly state that the feasible region of P(d) (or its alternative system when P(d) is not feasible) will contain a ball of radius r that is itself no more than a distance R from the origin, where the ratio R/r satisfies R/rc 1 C(d), and such that r≥ and Rc 3 C(d), where c 1,c 2,c 3 are constants that depend only on properties of the cones and the norms used. Therefore the condition measure C(d) is a relevant tool in proving the existence of an inscribed ball in the feasible region of P(d) that is not too far from the origin and whose radius is not too small. We deal with the problem of estimating some unknown regression function involved in a regression framework with deterministic design points. For this end, we consider some collection of finite dimensional linear spaces (models) and the least-squares estimator built on a data driven selected model among this collection. This data driven choice is performed via the minimization of some penalized model selection criterion that generalizes on Mallows' C p . We provide non asymptotic risk bounds for the so-defined estimator from which we deduce adaptivity properties. Our results hold under mild moment conditions on the errors. The statement and the use of a new moment inequality for empirical processes is at the heart of the techniques involved in our approach. We consider stochastic programming problems with probabilistic constraints involving integer-valued random variables. The concept of a p-efficient point of a probability distribution is used to derive various equivalent problem formulations. Next we introduce the concept of r-concave discrete probability distributions and analyse its relevance for problems under consideration. These notions are used to derive lower and upper bounds for the optimal value of probabilistically constrained stochastic programming problems with discrete random variables. For an edge-weighted graph G with n vertices and m edges, we present a new deterministic algorithm for computing a minimum k-way cut for k=3,4. The algorithm runs in O(n k-1 F(n,m))=O(mn k log(n 2 /m)) time and O(n 2) space for k=3,4, where F(n,m) denotes the time bound required to solve the maximum flow problem in G. The bound for k=3 matches the current best deterministic bound ?(mn 3) for weighted graphs, but improves the bound ?(mn 3) to O(n 2 F(n,m))=O(min{mn 8/3,m 3/2 n 2}) for unweighted graphs. The bound ?(mn 4) for k=4 improves the previous best randomized bound ?(n 6) (for m=o(n 2)). The algorithm is then generalized to the problem of finding a minimum 3-way cut in a symmetric submodular system. It is shown that: (1) any action of a Moscow group G on a first countable, Dieudonné complete (in particular, on a metrizable) space X can uniquely be extended to an action of the Dieudonné completion γG on X, (2) any action of a locally pseudocompact topological group G on a b f -space (in particular, on a first countable space) X can uniquely be extended to an action of the Weil completion on the Dieudonné completion γX of X. As a consequence, we obtain that, for each locally pseudocompact topological group G, every G-space with the b f -property admits an equivariant embedding into a compact Hausdorff G-space. Furthermore, for each pseudocompact group G, every metrizable G-space has a G-invariant metric compatible with its topology. We also give a direct construction of such an invariant metric. Given an undirected graph G=(V,E) with |V|=n and an integer k between 0 and n, the maximization graph partition (MAX-GP) problem is to determine a subset SV of k nodes such that an objective function w(S) is maximized. The MAX-GP problem can be formulated as a binary quadratic program and it is NP-hard. Semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations of such quadratic programs have been used to design approximation algorithms with guaranteed performance ratios for various MAX-GP problems. Based on several earlier results, we present an improved rounding method using an SDP relaxation, and establish improved approximation ratios for several MAX-GP problems, including Dense-Subgraph, Max-Cut, Max-Not-Cut, and Max-Vertex-Cover. In this paper, we introduce the notion of a self-regular function. Such a function is strongly convex and smooth coercive on its domain, the positive real axis. We show that any such function induces a so-called self-regular proximity function and a corresponding search direction for primal-dual path-following interior-point methods (IPMs) for solving linear optimization (LO) problems. It is proved that the new large-update IPMs enjoy a polynomial ?(n log) iteration bound, where q≥1 is the so-called barrier degree of the kernel function underlying the algorithm. The constant hidden in the ?-symbol depends on q and the growth degree p≥1 of the kernel function. When choosing the kernel function appropriately the new large-update IPMs have a polynomial ?(lognlog) iteration bound, thus improving the currently best known bound for large-update methods by almost a factor . Our unified analysis provides also the ?(log) best known iteration bound of small-update IPMs. At each iteration, we need to solve only one linear system. We study a general subgradient projection method for minimizing a quasiconvex objective subject to a convex set constraint in a Hilbert space. Our setting is very general: the objective is only upper semicontinuous on its domain, which need not be open, and various subdifferentials may be used. We extend previous results by proving convergence in objective values and to the generalized solution set for classical stepsizes t k →0, ∑t k =∞, and weak or strong convergence of the iterates to a solution for {t k }∈ℓ2∖ℓ1 under mild regularity conditions. For bounded constraint sets and suitable stepsizes, the method finds ε-solutions with an efficiency estimate of O-2), thus being optimal in the sense of Nemirovskii.
