Summary A classical result (see R.Nevanlinna, Acta Math.,58 (1932), p. 345) states that for a second-order linear differential equation, w + P(z) w + Q(z) w=0, where P(z) and Q(z) are polynomials, there exist finitely many rays, arg z=j, for j=1,..., m, such that for any solution w=f(z) 0 and any > 0, all but finitely many zeros off lie in the union of the sectors ¦ arg z - j¦ < for j=1,..., m. In this paper, we give a complete answer to the question of determining when the same result holds for equations of arbitrary order having polynomial coefficients. We prove that for any such equation, one of the following two properties must hold: (a) for any ray, arg z=, and any > 0, there is a solution f 0 of the equation having infinitely many zeros in the sector ¦arg z - ¦ <, or (b) there exist finitely many rays, arg z=j, for j= 1,..., m, such that for any >0, all but finitely many zeros of any solution f 0 must lie in the union of the sectors ¦ arg z - j¦ < for j=1, ..., m. In addition, our method of proof provides an effective procedure for determining which of the two possibilities holds for a given equation, and in the case when (b) holds, our method will produce the rays, arg z=j. We emphasize that our result applies to all equations having polynomial coefficients, without exception. In addition, we mention that if the coefficients are only assumed to be rational functions, our results will still give precise information on the possible location of the bulk of the zeros of any solution.This research was supported in part by the National Science Foundation (DMS-84-20561 and DMS-87-21813).  相似文献

Necessary Kuhn-Tucker conditions up to precision without constraint qualification for -Pareto optimality of multiobjective programming are derived. This article suggests the establishment of a Wolfe-type -duality theorem for nondifferentiable, nonconvex, multiobjective minimization problems. The Stefan problem is considered with the kinetic condition u+=u=k(y, )-v at the phase interface, where k(y, ) is the half-sum of the principal curvatures of the free boundary and v is the speed of its shifting in the direction of a normal. The order P on a group G is called rigid if for p P the relation p¦[x, p]¦ P holds for every x G, =±1. In this note we give criteria for the existence of a rigid linear order, for the extendability of a rigid partial order to a rigid linear order, and for the extendability of each rigid partial order to a rigid linear order on a group. It is proved that the class of groups each of whose rigid partial orders can be extended to a rigid linear order is closed with respect to direct products. A new proof of the theorem of M. I. We study a map of osculating elements of an affine Cayley- Klein (CK-) plane into the Lie algebraA 4(2) of the aequiform transformationsA 4(2) of the given plane. If we use the real projective spaceP 3() overA 4(2) each osculating element defines a straight line inP 3(). In the first part of this paper this map is studied in detail. In the second part we study second order properties of one- parameter motions and their corresponding properties in the Lie algebraA 4(2). Summary A lower limit of the length of the longest excursion of a symmetric random walk is given. Certain related problems are also discussed. This paper studies the behavior of a discrete queueing system which accepts synchronized arrivals and provides synchronized services. The number of arrivals occurring at an arriving point may follow any arbitrary discrete distribution possessing finite first moment and convergent probability generating function in ¦ z ¦ 1 + with > 0. The system is equipped with an infinite buffer and one or more servers operating in synchronous mode. Service discipline may or may not be prioritized. Results such as the probability generating function of queue occupancy, average queue length, system throughput, and delay are derived in this paper. The proximity is investigated of the solution of Cauchy's problem for the equation u t +((u))x= u xx ((u) > 0) to the solution of Cauchy's problem for the equation ut+ ((u))x= 0, when the solution of the latter problem has a finite number of lines of discontinuity in the strip 0 t T. It is proved that, everywhere outside a fixed neighborhood of the lines of discontinuity, we have |u–u| C, where the constant C is independent of. In part I we have studied a map of osculating elements of an affine Cayley-Klein (CK-) plane into the Lie algebra A4(2) of the aequiform transformations A4(2) of the given plane A2(, 2). If we use the real projective space P3() over A4(2) each osculating element defines a straight line in P3(). We now give a one parameter motion in A4(2) and study second order properties and their analogon in the Lie algebra and P3(), respectively. We show that the wellknown relationship between the points of the moving frame and the osculating circles of the point paths in the fixed frame may be interpreted as part of a quadratic map of certain straight Lines of P3(). An analogous result holds for the curvature of pairs of envelopes; the mapV induced in P3() than is contained in a cubic relationship of straight lines.

Summary This paper provides a fast and storage-saving method for the solution of the first biharmonic boundary value problem (b.v.p.). The b.v.p. is approximated via a special variational finite difference technique suggested earlier by V.G. Korneev. It is shown theoretically that our method produces an approximate solution to the finite difference equations inO(NlnNln–1) arithmetical operations, whereN is the number of unknowns and (0<<1) denotes the relative accuracy required. The numerical results obtained by our computer code CGMFC decisively substantiate the theoretical estimates given.  相似文献

Summary This study establishes an error estimate for a penalty-finite element approximation of the variational inequality obtained by a class of obstacle problems. By special identification of the penalty term, we first show that the penalty solution converges to the solution of a mixed formulation of the variational inequality. The rate of convergence of the penalization is where is the penalty parameter. To obtain the error of finite element approximation, we apply the results obtained by Brezzi, Hager and Raviart for the mixed finite element method to the variational inequality.  相似文献

In the article strongly nondegenerate (k, n)-quadrics all of whose linear automorphisms are of the formzz, ¦¦2, {0} are considered.
