For a finite monoid S, let ν(S) (νd(S)) denote the least number n such that there exists a graph (directed graph) Γ of order n with End(Γ)?S. Also let rank(S) be the smallest number of elements required to generate S. In this paper, we use Cayley digraphs of monoids, to connect lower bounds of ν(S) (νd(S)) to the lower bounds of rank(S). On the other hand, we connect upper bounds of rank(S) to upper bounds of ν(S) (νd(S)).  相似文献

The commuting graph of a ring R, denoted by Γ(R), is a graph whose vertices are all non-central elements of R and two distinct vertices x and y are adjacent if and only if xy = yx. Let D be a division ring and n ? 3. In this paper we investigate the diameters of Γ(Mn(D)) and determine the diameters of some induced subgraphs of Γ(Mn(D)), such as the induced subgraphs on the set of all non-scalar non-invertible, nilpotent, idempotent, and involution matrices in Mn(D). For every field F, it is shown that if Γ(Mn(F)) is a connected graph, then diam Γ(Mn(F)) ? 6. We conjecture that if Γ(Mn(F)) is a connected graph, then diam Γ(Mn(F)) ? 5. We show that if F is an algebraically closed field or n is a prime number and Γ(Mn(F)) is a connected graph, then diam Γ(Mn(F)) = 4. Finally, we present some applications to the structure of pairs of idempotents which may prove of independent interest.  相似文献

Let C n (M) be the configuration space of n distinct ordered points in M. We prove that if M is any connected orientable manifold (closed or open), the homology groups H i (C n (M);ℚ) are representation stable in the sense of Church and Farb (). Applying this to the trivial representation, we obtain as a corollary that the unordered configuration space B n (M) satisfies classical homological stability: for each i, H i (B n (M);ℚ)≈H i (B n+1(M);ℚ) for n>i. This improves on results of McDuff, Segal, and others for open manifolds. Applied to closed manifolds, this provides natural examples where rational homological stability holds even though integral homological stability fails.  相似文献

A smooth manifold M is called symplectically aspherical if it admits a symplectic form with |2(M) = 0. It is easy to see that, unlike in the case of closed symplectic manifolds, not every finitely presented group can be realized as the fundamental group of a closed symplectically aspherical manifold. The goal of the paper is to study the fundamental groups of closed symplectically aspherical manifolds. Motivated by some results of Gompf, we introduce two classes of fundamental groups 1(M) of symplectically aspherical manifolds M. The first one consists of fundamental groups of such M with 2(M)=0, while the second with 2(M)0. Relations between these classes are discussed. We show that several important (classes of) groups can be realized in both classes, while some groups can be realized in the first class but not in the second one. Also, we notice that there are some interesting dimensional phenomena in the realization problem. The above results are framed by a general study of symplectically aspherical manifolds. For example, we find some conditions which imply that the Gompf sum of symplectically aspherical manifolds is symplectically aspherical, or that a total space of a bundle is symplectically aspherical.Mathematics Subject Classification (1991): 57R15, 53D05, 14F35  相似文献

Jensen and Toft 8 conjectured that every 2‐edge‐connected graph without a K5‐minor has a nowhere zero 4‐flow. Walton and Welsh 19 proved that if a coloopless regular matroid M does not have a minor in {M(K3,3), M*(K5)}, then M admits a nowhere zero 4‐flow. In this note, we prove that if a coloopless regular matroid M does not have a minor in {M(K5), M*(K5)}, then M admits a nowhere zero 4‐flow. The commuting graph of a group G, denoted by Γ(G), is similarly defined. In this article we investigate some graph-theoretic properties of Γ(M n (F)), where F is a field and n ≥ 2. Also we study the commuting graphs of some classical groups such as GL n (F) and SL n (F). We show that Γ(M n (F)) is a connected graph if and only if every field extension of F of degree n contains a proper intermediate field. We prove that apart from finitely many fields, a similar result is true for Γ(GL n (F)) and Γ(SL n (F)). Also we show that for two fields F and E and integers n, m ≥ 2, if Γ(M n (F))?Γ(M m (E)), then n = m and |F|=|E|.  相似文献

For any subvariety of a compact holomorphic symplectic K?hler manifold, we define the symplectic Wirtinger number W(X). We show that W(X) \leqslant 1,W(X) \leqslant 1, and the equality is reached if and only if the subvariety X ì MX \subset M is trianalytic, i.e. compatible with the hyperk?hler structure on M. For a sequence X1 ? X2 ? ?Xn ? MX_1 \to X_2 \to \ldots X_n \to M of immersions of simple holomorphic symplectic manifolds, we show that W( X1 ) \leqslant W( X2 ) \leqslant ?\leqslant W( Xn ).W\left( {X_1 } \right) \leqslant W\left( {X_2 } \right) \leqslant \ldots \leqslant W\left( {X_n } \right).  相似文献

Positive Quaternion Kähler Manifolds are Riemannian manifolds with holonomy contained in Sp(n)Sp(1) and with positive scalar curvature. Conjecturally, they are symmetric spaces. In this article we are mainly concerned with Positive Quaternion Kähler Manifolds M satisfying b4(M)=1. Aubin’s Lemma says that, if the Yamabe constant of a closed conformal manifold (M, C) is positive, then it is strictly less than the Yamabe constant of any of its non-trivial finite conformal coverings. We generalize this lemma to the one for the Yamabe constant of any (M , C ) of its infinite conformal coverings, provided that π 1(M) has a descending chain of finite index subgroups tending to π 1(M ). Moreover, if the covering M is normal, the limit of the Yamabe constants of the finite conformal coverings (associated to the descending chain) is equal to that of (M , C ). For the proof of this, we also establish a version of positive mass theorem for a specific class of asymptotically flat manifolds with singularities.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the degree and the homotopy theory of Orlicz–Sobolev mappings W 1,P (M,N) between manifolds, where the Young function P satisfies a divergence condition and forms a slightly larger space than W 1,n , n=dim M. In particular, we prove that if M and N are compact oriented manifolds without boundary and dim M=dim N=n, then the degree is well defined in W 1,P (M,N) if and only if the universal cover of N is not a rational homology sphere, and in the case n=4, if and only if N is not homeomorphic to S 4.  相似文献

Abstract

In ring theory it is well known that a ring R with identity is isomorphic to a matrix ring if and only if R has a set of matrix units. In this paper, the above result is extended to matrix near-rings and it is proved that a near-ring R with identity is isomorphic to a matrix near-ring if and only if R has a set of matrix units and satisfies two other conditions. As a consequence of this result several examples of matrix near-rings are given and for a finite group (Γ, +) with o(Γ) > 2 it is proved that M0n) is (isomorphic to) a matrix near-ring.  相似文献

Assuming m − 1 < kp < m, we prove that the space C (M, N) of smooth mappings between compact Riemannian manifolds M, N (m = dim M) is dense in the Sobolev space W k,p (M, N) if and only if π m−1(N) = {0}. Given a von Neumann algebra M, we consider the central extension E(M) of M. We introduce the topology t c(M) on E(M) generated by a center-valued norm and prove that it coincides with the topology of local convergence in measure on E(M) if and only if M does not have direct summands of type II. Let Γ be an X‐symmetric graph admitting an X‐invariant partition ?? on V(Γ) such that Γ?? is connected and (X, 2)‐arc transitive. A characterization of (Γ, X, ??) was given in [S. Zhou Eur J Comb 23 (2002), 741–760] for the case where |B|>|Γ(C)∩B|=2 for an arc (B, C) of Γ??.We con‐sider in this article the case where |B|>|Γ(C)∩B|=3, and prove that Γ can be constructed from a 2‐arc transitive graph of valency 4 or 7 unless its connected components are isomorphic to 3 K 2, C 6 or K 3, 3.
