A note on the optimality of the N- and D-policies for the M/G/1 queue

This note considers the N- and D-policies for the M/G/1 queue. We concentrate on the true relationship between the optimal N- and D-policies when the cost function is based on the expected number of customers in the system.     

Continuously controlledA-theory

To anycontrolled space over the metric spaceB we can associate itsboundedly controlled algebraic K-theory, a functor designed to give information about the space of stable bounded concordances of manifolds homotopy equivalent toX. Generalizing a construction of D. R. Anderson, F. X. Connolly, S. Ferry, and E. K. Pedersen, we define another functor, calledcontinuously controlled A-theory, which depends only on thetopology of the control space, not itsmetric properties. In the special case whereB=R ₊, this functor is (more or less by definition) the same asproper A-theory. We prove that under certain conditions on the controlled space the natural transformation from boundedly controlledA-theory to continuously controlledA-theory is a weak homotopy equivalence, and hence defines a generalized homology theory. Continuously controlledK-theory is used in the approaches of G. Carlsson, E. K. Pedersen, and S. Ferry, S. Weinbergervto theK-theory Novikov conjecture.     

K2 of a Fermat quotient and the value of its L-function

Two linearly independent elements of k ₂ of a certain quotient of a Fermat curve is exhibited in an explicit manner. The covolume of the regulator and the value of the L-function of the curve is numerically computed, and their ratio is nearly equal to a simple rational number.     

LR-normal orthogroups

A new kind of regular orthogroups, namely, the LR-normal orthogroups is introduced and investigated. In particular, we will introduce the gearing techniques for fitting semigroup components on a semilattice in the construction of LR-normal orthogroups.     

Fast formula of a reliability ofm-consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system with cyclek

Anm-consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system is a system ofn linearly arranged components which fails if and only if at leastm non-overlapping sequences ofk components fail, when there arek distinct components with failure probabilitiesq _i fori=1,...,k and where the failure probability of thej-th component (j=rk+i (1 ≤i ≤k) isq _j =q _i , we call this system by anm-consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system with cycle (or period)k. In this paper we give a formula of the failure probability ofm-consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system with cyclek via the failure probability of consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system.     

Asymptotic Behavior of Loss Probability in GI/M/1/K Queue as K Tends to Infinity

We obtain an asymptotic behavior of the loss probability for the GI/M/1/K queue as K for cases of <1, >1 and =1.     

On the multi-phase M/G/1 queueing system with random feedback

In this paper we consider an M/G/1 queue with k phases of heterogeneous services and random feedback, where the arrival is Poisson and service times has general distribution. After the completion of the i-th phase, with probability θ _i the (i + 1)-th phase starts, with probability p _i the customer feedback to the tail of the queue and with probability 1 − θ _i − p _i  = q _i departs the system if service be successful, for i = 1, 2 , . . . , k. Finally in kth phase with probability p _k feedback to the tail of the queue and with probability 1 − p _k departs the system. We derive the steady-state equations, and PGF’s of the system is obtained. By using them the mean queue size at departure epoch is obtained.     

Continuity theorems for the M/M/1/n queueing system

In this paper continuity theorems are established for the number of losses during a busy period of the M/M/1/n queue. We consider an M/GI/1/n queueing system where the service time probability distribution, slightly different in a certain sense from the exponential distribution, is approximated by that exponential distribution. Continuity theorems are obtained in the form of one or two-sided stochastic inequalities. The paper shows how the bounds of these inequalities are changed if further assumptions, associated with specific properties of the service time distribution (precisely described in the paper), are made. Specifically, some parametric families of service time distributions are discussed, and the paper establishes uniform estimates (given for all possible values of the parameter) and local estimates (where the parameter is fixed and takes only the given value). The analysis of the paper is based on the level crossing approach and some characterization properties of the exponential distribution. K-Theory of Stratified Vector Bundles

We show that the Atiyah–Hirzebruch K-theory of spaces admits a canonical generalization for stratified spaces. For this we study algebraic constructions on stratified vector bundles. In particular the tangent bundle of a stratified manifold is such a stratified vector bundle.     

Relative K-homology and K-homology of an ideal

We provide a straightforward proof of one of the main results of the Baum-Douglas K-homology theory: If A is a separable nuclear C ^*-algebra and I an ideal of A, then the natural restriction map K ⁰(A, I) K ⁰(I) is an isomorphism of Abelian groups.
