Probabilistically constrained quadratic programming (PCQP) problems arise naturally from many real-world applications and have posed a great challenge in front of the optimization society for years due to the nonconvex and discrete nature of its feasible set. We consider in this paper a special case of PCQP where the random vector has a finite discrete distribution. We first derive second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation and semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation for the problem via a new Lagrangian decomposition scheme. We then give a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) reformulation of the PCQP and show that the continuous relaxation of the MIQP is exactly the SOCP relaxation. This new MIQP reformulation is more efficient than the standard MIQP reformulation in the sense that its continuous relaxation is tighter than or at least as tight as that of the standard MIQP. We report preliminary computational results to demonstrate the tightness of the new convex relaxations and the effectiveness of the new MIQP reformulation.  相似文献

We propose a deterministic global optimization approach, whose novel contributions are rooted in the edge-concave and piecewise-linear underestimators, to address nonconvex mixed-integer quadratically-constrained quadratic programs (MIQCQP) to ${\epsilon}$ -global optimality. The facets of low-dimensional (n ?? 3) edge-concave aggregations dominating the termwise relaxation of MIQCQP are introduced at every node of a branch-and-bound tree. Concave multivariable terms and sparsely distributed bilinear terms that do not participate in connected edge-concave aggregations are addressed through piecewise-linear relaxations. Extensive computational studies are presented for point packing problems, standard and generalized pooling problems, and examples from GLOBALLib (Meeraus, Globallib. http://www.gamsworld.org/global/globallib.htm).  相似文献

This paper proposes a conic approximation algorithm for solving quadratic optimization problems with linear complementarity constraints.We provide a conic reformulation and its dual for the original problem such that these three problems share the same optimal objective value. Moreover, we show that the conic reformulation problem is attainable when the original problem has a nonempty and bounded feasible domain. Since the conic reformulation is in general a hard problem, some conic relaxations are further considered. We offer a condition under which both the semidefinite relaxation and its dual problem become strictly feasible for finding a lower bound in polynomial time. For more general cases, by adaptively refining the outer approximation of the feasible set, we propose a conic approximation algorithm to identify an optimal solution or an \(\epsilon \)-optimal solution of the original problem. A convergence proof is given under simple assumptions. Some computational results are included to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.  相似文献

Let be a 0-1 quadratic program which consists in minimizing a quadratic function subject to linear equality constraints. In this paper, we present QCR, a general method to reformulate into an equivalent 0-1 program with a convex quadratic objective function. The reformulated problem can then be efficiently solved by a classical branch-and-bound algorithm, based on continuous relaxation. This idea is already present in the literature and used in standard solvers such as CPLEX. Our objective in this work was to find a convex reformulation whose continuous relaxation bound is, moreover, as tight as possible. From this point of view, we show that QCR is optimal in a certain sense. State-of-the-art reformulation methods mainly operate a perturbation of the diagonal terms and are valid for any {0,1} vector. The innovation of QCR comes from the fact that the reformulation also uses the equality constraints and is valid on the feasible solution domain only. Hence, the superiority of QCR holds by construction. However, reformulation by QCR requires the solution of a semidefinite program which can be costly from the running time point of view. We carry out a computational experience on three different combinatorial optimization problems showing that the costly computational time of reformulation by QCR can however result in a drastically more efficient branch-and-bound phase. Moreover, our new approach is competitive with very specific methods applied to particular optimization problems.  相似文献

Let (MQP) be a general mixed integer quadratic program that consists of minimizing a quadratic function subject to linear constraints. In this paper, we present a convex reformulation of (MQP), i.e. we reformulate (MQP) into an equivalent program, with a convex objective function. Such a reformulation can be solved by a standard solver that uses a branch and bound algorithm. We prove that our reformulation is the best one within a convex reformulation scheme, from the continuous relaxation point of view. This reformulation, that we call MIQCR (Mixed Integer Quadratic Convex Reformulation), is based on the solution of an SDP relaxation of (MQP). Computational experiences are carried out with instances of (MQP) including one equality constraint or one inequality constraint. The results show that most of the considered instances with up to 40 variables can be solved in 1?h of CPU time by a standard solver.  相似文献

A conic integer program is an integer programming problem with conic constraints. Many problems in finance, engineering, statistical learning, and probabilistic optimization are modeled using conic constraints. Here we study mixed-integer sets defined by second-order conic constraints. We introduce general-purpose cuts for conic mixed-integer programming based on polyhedral conic substructures of second-order conic sets. These cuts can be readily incorporated in branch-and-bound algorithms that solve either second-order conic programming or linear programming relaxations of conic integer programs at the nodes of the branch-and-bound tree. Central to our approach is a reformulation of the second-order conic constraints with polyhedral second-order conic constraints in a higher dimensional space. In this representation the cuts we develop are linear, even though they are nonlinear in the original space of variables. This feature leads to a computationally efficient implementation of nonlinear cuts for conic mixed-integer programming. The reformulation also allows the use of polyhedral methods for conic integer programming. We report computational results on solving unstructured second-order conic mixed-integer problems as well as mean–variance capital budgeting problems and least-squares estimation problems with binary inputs. Our computational experiments show that conic mixed-integer rounding cuts are very effective in reducing the integrality gap of continuous relaxations of conic mixed-integer programs and, hence, improving their solvability. We present semidefinite relaxations for unconstrained non-convex quadratic mixed-integer optimization problems. These relaxations yield tight bounds and are computationally easy to solve for medium-sized instances, even if some of the variables are integer and unbounded. In this case, the problem contains an infinite number of linear constraints; these constraints are separated dynamically. We use this approach as a bounding routine in an SDP-based branch-and-bound framework. In case of a convex objective function, the new SDP bound improves the bound given by the continuous relaxation of the problem. Numerical experiments show that our algorithm performs well on various types of non-convex instances.  相似文献

Polyhedral relaxations have been incorporated in a variety of solvers for the global optimization of mixed-integer nonlinear programs. Currently, these relaxations constitute the dominant approach in global optimization practice. In this paper, we introduce a new relaxation paradigm for global optimization. The proposed framework combines polyhedral and convex nonlinear relaxations, along with fail-safe techniques, convexity identification at each node of the branch-and-bound tree, and learning strategies for automatically selecting and switching between polyhedral and nonlinear relaxations and among different local search algorithms in different parts of the search tree. We report computational experiments with the proposed methodology on widely-used test problem collections from the literature, including 369 problems from GlobalLib, 250 problems from MINLPLib, 980 problems from PrincetonLib, and 142 problems from IBMLib. Results show that incorporating the proposed techniques in the BARON software leads to significant reductions in execution time, and increases by 30% the number of problems that are solvable to global optimality within 500 s on a standard workstation.  相似文献

We present a Branch-and-Cut algorithm for a class of nonlinear chance-constrained mathematical optimization problems with a finite number of scenarios. Unsatisfied scenarios can enter a recovery mode. This class corresponds to problems that can be reformulated as deterministic convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems with indicator variables and continuous scenario variables, but the size of the reformulation is large and quickly becomes impractical as the number of scenarios grows. The Branch-and-Cut algorithm is based on an implicit Benders decomposition scheme, where we generate cutting planes as outer approximation cuts from the projection of the feasible region on suitable subspaces. The size of the master problem in our scheme is much smaller than the deterministic reformulation of the chance-constrained problem. We apply the Branch-and-Cut algorithm to the mid-term hydro scheduling problem, for which we propose a chance-constrained formulation. A computational study using data from ten hydroplants in Greece shows that the proposed methodology solves instances faster than applying a general-purpose solver for convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming problems to the deterministic reformulation, and scales much better with the number of scenarios.

We present in this paper an integer diagonalization approach for deriving new lower bounds for general quadratic integer programming problems. More specifically, we introduce a semiunimodular transformation in order to diagonalize a symmetric matrix and preserve integral property of the feasible set at the same time. Via the semiunimodular transformation, the resulting separable quadratic integer program is a relaxation of the nonseparable quadratic integer program. We further define the integer diagonalization dual problem to identify the best semiunimodular transformation and analyze some basic properties of the set of semiunimodular transformations for a rational symmetric matrix. In particular, we present a complete characterization of the set of all semiunimodular transformations for a nonsingular 2×2 symmetric matrix. We finally discuss Lagrangian relaxation and convex relaxation schemes for the resulting separable quadratic integer programming problem and compare the tightness of different relaxation schemes.  相似文献

Generalized Nash equilibrium problems (GNEPs) allow, in contrast to standard Nash equilibrium problems, a dependence of the strategy space of one player from the decisions of the other players. In this paper, we consider jointly convex GNEPs which form an important subclass of the general GNEPs. Based on a regularized Nikaido-Isoda function, we present two (nonsmooth) reformulations of this class of GNEPs, one reformulation being a constrained optimization problem and the other one being an unconstrained optimization problem. While most approaches in the literature compute only a so-called normalized Nash equilibrium, which is a subset of all solutions, our two approaches have the property that their minima characterize the set of all solutions of a GNEP. We also investigate the smoothness properties of our two optimization problems and show that both problems are continuous under a Slater-type condition and, in fact, piecewise continuously differentiable under the constant rank constraint qualification. Finally, we present some numerical results based on our unconstrained optimization reformulation.  相似文献

We consider semidefinite, copositive, and more general, set-semidefinite programming relaxations of general nonconvex quadratic problems. For the semidefinite case a comparison between the feasible set of the original program and the feasible set of the relaxation has been given by Kojima and Tunçel (SIAM J Optim 10(3):750–778, 2000). A common strategy for solving 0-1 cubic programs is to reformulate the non-linear problem into an equivalent linear representation, which can then be submitted directly to a standard mixed-integer programming solver. Both the size and the strength of the continuous relaxation of the reformulation determine the success of this method. One of the most compact linear representations of 0-1 cubic programs is based on a repeated application of the linearization technique for 0-1 quadratic programs introduced by Glover. In this paper, we develop a pre-processing step that serves to strengthen the linear programming bound provided by this concise linear form of a 0-1 cubic program. The proposed scheme involves using optimal dual multipliers of a partial level-2 RLT formulation to rewrite the objective function of the cubic program before applying the linearization. We perform extensive computational tests on the 0-1 cubic multidimensional knapsack problem to show the advantage of our approach.  相似文献

The problem of minimizing a quadratic form over the standard simplex is known as the standard quadratic optimization problem (SQO). It is NP-hard, and contains the maximum stable set problem in graphs as a special case. In this note, we show that the SQO problem may be reformulated as an (exponentially sized) linear program (LP). This reformulation also suggests a hierarchy of polynomial-time solvable LP’s whose optimal values converge finitely to the optimal value of the SQO problem. The hierarchies of LP relaxations from the literature do not share this finite convergence property for SQO, and we review the relevant counterexamples.  相似文献

We focus in this paper the problem of improving the semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations for the standard quadratic optimization problem (standard QP in short) that concerns with minimizing a quadratic form over a simplex. We first analyze the duality gap between the standard QP and one of its SDP relaxations known as “strengthened Shor’s relaxation”. To estimate the duality gap, we utilize the duality information of the SDP relaxation to construct a graph G ?. The estimation can be then reduced to a two-phase problem of enumerating first all the minimal vertex covers of G ? and solving next a family of second-order cone programming problems. When there is a nonzero duality gap, this duality gap estimation can lead to a strictly tighter lower bound than the strengthened Shor’s SDP bound. With the duality gap estimation improving scheme, we develop further a heuristic algorithm for obtaining a good approximate solution for standard QP.  相似文献

We study a variant of the spanning tree problem where we require that, for a given connected graph, the spanning tree to be found has the minimum number of branch vertices (that is vertices of the tree whose degree is greater than two). We provide four different formulations of the problem and compare different relaxations of them, namely Lagrangian relaxation, continuous relaxation, mixed integer-continuous relaxation. We approach the solution of the Lagrangian dual both by means of a standard subgradient method and an ad-hoc finite ascent algorithm based on updating one multiplier at the time. We provide numerical result comparison of all the considered relaxations on a wide set of benchmark instances. A useful follow-up of tackling the Lagrangian dual is the possibility of getting a feasible solution for the original problem with no extra costs. We evaluate the quality of the resulting upper bound by comparison either with the optimal solution, whenever available, or with the feasible solution provided by some existing heuristic algorithms.  相似文献

Nonconvex programs involving bilinear terms and linear equality constraints often appear more nonlinear than they really are. By using an automatic symbolic reformulation we can substitute some of the bilinear terms with linear constraints. This has a dramatically improving effect on the tightness of any convex relaxation of the problem, which makes deterministic global optimization algorithms like spatial Branch-and-Bound much more eff- cient when applied to the problem.  相似文献

New observations are made about two lower bound schemes for single-machine min-sum scheduling problems. We find that the strongest bound of those provided by transportation problem relaxations can be computed by solving a linear program. We show the equivalence of this strongest bound and the bound provided by the LP relaxation of the time-indexed integer programming formulation. These observations lead to a new lower bound scheme that yields fast approximation of the time-indexed bound. Several techniques are developed to facilitate the effective use of the new lower bound in branch-and-bound. Numerical experiments are conducted on 375 benchmark problems of the total weighted tardiness problem from OR-Library. Results obtained with our new method are spectacular; we are able to solve all 125 open problems to optimality.  相似文献
