An assessment of the effects of microcomputing on O.R. should take account of the impact of micros on other professional groups involved in the provision of information and analysis to managers. The paper examines the likely changes in the role of information systems analysts associated with present trends in computer-based information systems and, by concentrating on the decision support systems area, argues that O.R. workers and systems analysts may find themselves competing for new roles in ways which make if difficult to set out the contribution of each in terms of what they do at present. A modest proposal is made for a new form of team for the development of decision support systems. This incorporates a division of skills which cuts across existing lines of differentiation and foresees an increased contribution on the part of user-managers. 相似文献

Microelectronics have greatly influenced the nature of manufacturing technology and systems. New factories make growing use of microcomputers and microprocessors in robots, C.N.C. machine tools and flexible manufacturing systems. The result is an increasing trend towards fully integrated computer-based manufacturing systems. As a consequence, O.R. software has a newer, more direct role in the modern factory than ever before. Fully integrated CAM systems are implemented by multi-disciplinary teams of engineers and management scientists. The O.R. practitioner can make a major contribution, for example in layout optimisation and plant simulations. 相似文献

Interactions of 1, 1, 1 trifluoroacetone with proton donor solvents of the type RH [where R=HO, CH3S, CH3CH2CH2CH2S, CH3O, (CH3)2N, (C2H5)2N] have been investigated using NMR and infra-red techniques. Evidence of the formation of addition products of the type CF3.C(OH)R.CH3 where OH group is hydrogen-bonded with the fluorine of the CF3 group has been obtained. 相似文献

The relationship between O.R. and computer programming is considered. The programming languages involved, and their respective roles, are reviewed. Criteria for assessing a programming language for O.R. are discussed, particularly in view of the increasing use of microcomputers within O.R. 相似文献

The aim of this paper is to argue that O.R. should get more involved in a systems approach to support the processes of decision making within organizations. To do this effectively, more research is needed, and some suggestions are made to shift the emphasis of research within the O.R. community. The shift should occur both at the fundamental level of major research efforts and in the styles of project sought within M.Sc. courses. If the practice of systems O.R. is to develop, then it is time that a theoretical basis is developed. 相似文献

Operational Research is defined as the application of the methods of science to problems arising in the direction and management of systems of men, machines, materials and money in industry, business, government and defence. This article argues, by way of a story set in ancient Greece, that if Operational Research is to provide practical and helpful advice in these areas, then such a definition is grossly misleading by its failure to spell out the basic necessity of having to apply the methods of technology to these problems. In particular this paper deals with the primary need for Operational Researchers to draw upon the heuristic principles governing technological innovation and creativity. It is further argued that such heuristic activity has an important bearing on just what meaning can be attached to the phrase ‘the application of the methods of science’ referred to in the definition of O.R. 相似文献
