Hardy–Sobolev inequalities in half-space and some semilinear elliptic equations with singular coefficients

We study some semilinear elliptic equations with singular coefficients which relate to some Hardy–Sobolev inequalities. We obtain some existence results for these equations and give a theorem for prescribing the Palais–Smale sequence for these equations. Moreover, we find some interesting connections between these equations and some semilinear elliptic equations in hyperbolic space. Using these connections, we obtain many new results for these equations.     

Concentration of solutions for some singularly perturbed mixed problems: Asymptotics of minimal energy solutions

In this paper we carry on the study of asymptotic behavior of some solutions to a singularly perturbed problem with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions, started in the first paper [J. Garcia Azorero, A. Malchiodi, L. Montoro, I. Peral, Concentration of solutions for some singularly perturbed mixed problems: Existence results, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., in press]. Here we are mainly interested in the analysis of the location and shape of least energy solutions when the singular perturbation parameter tends to zero. We show that in many cases they coincide with the new solutions produced in [J. Garcia Azorero, A. Malchiodi, L. Montoro, I. Peral, Concentration of solutions for some singularly perturbed mixed problems: Existence results, Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., in press].     

On general boundary-value problems for nonlinear elliptic equations of second order in a multiply connected plane domain

This paper deals with some general irregular oblique derivative problems for nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations of second order in a multiply connected plane domain. Firstly, we state the well-posedness of a new set of modified boundary conditions. Secondly, we verify the existence of solutions of the modified boundary-value problem for harmonic functions, and then prove the solvability of the modified problem for nonlinear elliptic equations, which includes the original boundary-value problem (i.e. boundary conditions without involving undertermined functions data). Here, mainly, the location of the zeros of analytic functions, a priori estimates for solutions and the continuity method are used in deriving all these results. Furthermore, the present approach and setting seems to be new and different from what has been employed before.The research was partially supported by a UPGC Grant of Hong Kong.     

Nonexistence of solutions for singular elliptic equations with a quadratic gradient term

This paper concerns the nonexistence of solutions for singular elliptic equations with a quadratic gradient term. The main results complement and partly extend some works by Arcoya et al. (2009) [1]. As a by-product of the main results, we fill in a gap in one of their works.     

Lower and upper solutions for elliptic problems in nonsmooth domains

In this paper we prove some existence results of semilinear Dirichlet problems in nonsmooth domains in presence of lower and upper solutions well-ordered or not. We first prove existence results in an abstract setting using degree theory. We secondly apply them for domains with conical points.     

Continuous dependence results for non-linear Neumann type boundary value problems

We obtain estimates on the continuous dependence on the coefficient for second-order non-linear degenerate Neumann type boundary value problems. Our results extend previous work of Cockburn et al., Jakobsen and Karlsen, and Gripenberg to problems with more general boundary conditions and domains. A new feature here is that we account for the dependence on the boundary conditions. As one application of our continuous dependence results, we derive for the first time the rate of convergence for the vanishing viscosity method for such problems. We also derive new explicit continuous dependence on the coefficients results for problems involving Bellman-Isaacs equations and certain quasilinear equation.     

On some degenerate quasilinear equations involving variable exponents

In the present paper, we are concerned with some degenerate quasilinear equations involving variable exponents. Using various (variational and nonvariational) techniques, we prove existence, nonexistence and multiplicity results.     

On fixed point theorems of mixed monotone operators and applications

In this paper, we obtain some new existence and uniqueness theorems of positive fixed point of mixed monotone operators in Banach spaces partially ordered by a cone. Finally we apply the main theorem to a nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation. Some results are new even for increasing or decreasing operators.     

Sufficient structure conditions for uniqueness of viscosity solutions of semilinear and quasilinear equations

In this article, we introduce a new approach for proving Maximum Principle type results for viscosity solutions of second-order, fully nonlinear possibly degenerate elliptic equations. This approach leads, in particular, to a better understanding of the conditions on the equation which are necessary to obtain such results. It allows us to provide new comparison results for semilinear and quasilinear equations.     

Sobolev type embedding and quasilinear elliptic equations with radial potentials

We study the existence of nontrivial radial solutions for quasilinear elliptic equations with unbounded or decaying radial potentials. The existence results are based upon several new embedding theorems we establish in the paper for radially symmetric functions.     

Some Applications to Variational–Hemivariational Inequalities of the Principle of Symmetric Criticality for Motreanu–Panagiotopoulos Type Functionals

Using the principle of symmetric criticality for Motreanu–Panagiotopoulos type functionals we give some existence and multiplicity results for a class of variational–hemivariational inequalities on ^L+M .This work was partially supported by MEdC-ANCS, research project CEEX 2983/11.10.2005.     

Multiplicity of solutions for a quasilinear elliptic problem via the cohomological index

In this paper we study a quasilinear elliptic problem with the Dirichlet boundary condition in a bounded domain involving the operator Au=−Δ_pu−Δ_qu. Assuming that the nonlinearity has a concave-convex behavior we obtain some multiplicity results. More precisely, we obtain five nontrivial solutions; two by a minimization argument, two by the mountain pass theorem, and the other by a cohomological linking theorem.     

On a semilinear elliptic problem without (PS) condition

An existence result for semilinear elliptic problems whose associated functionals do not satisfy a Palais-Smale condition is proved. The nonlinearity of our problem fits none of the conditions in Ambrosetti and Rabinowitz (J. Funct. Anal. 14 (1973) 349), de Figueiredo et al. (J. Math. Pures Appl. 61 (1982) 41) and Gidas and Spruck (Comm. Part. Diff. Eq. 6 (1981) 883). Some truncation happens to be essential, and in the argument some new results on Liouville-type theorems are established.     

On the Palais–Smale condition

We present a new sufficient assumption weaker than the classical Ambrosetti–Rabinowitz condition which guarantees the boundedness of (PS) sequences. Moreover, we relax the standard subcritical polynomial growth condition ensuring the compactness of a bounded (PS) sequences. We also revise the Costa–Magalhaes condition [8] to obtain Cerami condition. As a consequence, some existence results derived by minimax methods were proved. Finally, we establish the existence of positive solution under the subcritical polynomial growth condition, while the strong superlinear condition is only required along an unbounded sequence. In other words, a certain degraded oscillation is allowed.     

Quasilinear elliptic problems under strong resonance conditions

In this paper we establish the existence and multiplicity of solutions for a quasilinear elliptic problem under strong resonance conditions at infinity. In order to control the resonance we consider a new hypothesis on the nonlinear term. In all results we use Variational Methods, Critical Groups and the Morse Theory.     

Numerical implementation of the EDEM for modified Helmholtz BVPs on annular domains

In a recent paper by the current authors a new methodology called the Extended-Domain-Eigenfunction-Method (EDEM) was proposed for solving elliptic boundary value problems on annular-like domains. In this paper we present and investigate one possible numerical algorithm to implement the EDEM. This algorithm is used to solve modified Helmholtz BVPs on annular-like domains. Two examples of annular-like domains are studied. The results and performance are compared with those of the well-known boundary element method (BEM). The high accuracy of the EDEM solutions and the superior efficiency of the EDEM over the BEM, make EDEM an excellent alternate candidate to use in the animation industry, where speed is a predominant requirement, and by the scientific community where accuracy is the paramount objective.     

Profile of bubbling solutions to a Liouville system

In several fields of Physics, Chemistry and Ecology, some models are described by Liouville systems. In this article we first prove a uniqueness result for a Liouville system in R²${\mathbb{R}}^2$. Then we establish a uniform estimate for bubbling solutions of a locally defined Liouville system near an isolated blowup point. The uniqueness result, as well as the local uniform estimates are crucial ingredients for obtaining a priori estimate, degree counting formulas and existence results for Liouville systems defined on Riemann surfaces.     

The effects of indefinite nonlinear boundary conditions on the structure of the positive solutions set of a logistic equation

We investigate a semilinear elliptic equation with a logistic nonlinearity and an indefinite nonlinear boundary condition, both depending on a parameter λ. Overall, we analyze the effect of the indefinite nonlinear boundary condition on the structure of the positive solutions set. Based on variational and bifurcation techniques, our main results establish the existence of three nontrivial non-negative solutions for some values of λ, as well as their asymptotic behavior. These results suggest that the positive solutions set contains an S-shaped component in some case, as well as a combination of a C-shaped and an S-shaped components in another case.     

Maximum and anti-maximum principlesand eigenfunctions estimates via perturbation theory of positive solutions of elliptic equations

In this paper we discuss some new results concerning perturbation theory for second order elliptic partial differential equations related to positivity properties of such equations. We continue the study of some different notions of “small” perturbations and discuss their relations to comparisons of Green's functions, refined maximum and anti-maximum principles, ground state, and the decay of eigenfunctions. In particular, we show that if V is a positive function which is a semismall perturbation of a subcritical Schr?dinger operator H defined on a domain , and are the (Dirichlet) eigenfunctions of the equation , then for any , the function is bounded and has a continuous extension up to the Martin boundary of the pair , where is the ground state of H with a principal eigenvalue . An infinite-dimensional linking theorem and applications
