We consider separable C*-dynamical systems (A, G,) for whichthe induced action of the group G on the primitive ideal spacePrim A of the C*-algebra A is free. We study how the representationtheory of the associated crossed product C*-algebra A G dependson the representation theory of A and the properties of theaction of G on Prim A and the spectrum Â. Our main toolsinvolve computations of upper and lower bounds on multiplicitynumbers associated to irreducible representations of A G. Weapply our techniques to give necessary and sufficient conditions,in terms of A and the action of G, for AG to be (i) a continuous-traceC*-algebra, (ii) a Fell C*-algebra and (iii) a bounded-traceC*-algebra. When G is amenable, we also give necessary and sufficientconditions for the crossed product C*-algebra AG to be (iv)a liminal C*-algebra and (v) a Type I C*-algebra. The resultsin (i), (iii)–(v) extend some earlier special cases inwhich A was assumed to have the corresponding property.  相似文献

We introduce panels of stabilizer schemes (K, G*) associatedwith finite intersection-closed subgroup sets of a given groupG, generalizing in some sense Davis' notion of a panel structureon a triangulated manifold for Coxeter groups. Given (K, G*),we construct a G-complex X with K as a strong fundamental domainand simplex stabilizers conjugate to subgroups in . It turnsout that higher generation properties of in the sense of Abels-Holzare reflected in connectivity properties of X. Given a finite simplicial graph and a non-trivial group G()for every vertex of , the graph product G() is the quotientof the free product of all vertex groups modulo the normal closureof all commutators [G(), G(w)] for which the vertices , w areadjacent. Our main result allows the computation of the virtualcohomological dimension of a graph product with finite vertexgroups in terms of connectivity properties of the underlyinggraph .  相似文献

Let the finite group A be acting on a finite group G with (|A|,|G|)=1. Let be the semidirect product of A and G. Let be acharacter of irreducible after restriction to G. In a previouspaper by Brian Hartley and the author, we proved that the restrictionof to S belongs to the set C(S) obtained by running over all that arise in this manner, by assuming, in addition, that Gis a product of extraspecial groups. This was proved in general,assuming only some condition on the Green functions of groupsof Lie type that is not as yet fully verified. In the presentpaper, we define the map Q(): SC by Q()(s)=|CG(s)|/(s). We provethat Q()C(S) under the same hypotheses. In particular, the characterquotient Q() is an ordinary character.  相似文献

In this paper, we prove the following theorems. (i) Let G bea graph of minimum degree 5. The close relationship between the notions of positive formsand representations for a C*-algebra A is one of the most basicfacts in the subject. In particular the weak containment ofrepresentations is well understood in terms of positive forms:given a representation of A in a Hilbert space H and a positiveform on A, its associated representation is weakly containedin (that is, ker ker ) if and only if belongs to the weak*closure of the cone of all finite sums of coefficients of .Among the results on the subject, let us recall the followingones. It is proved that a graph K has an embedding as a regular mapon some closed surface if and only if its automorphism groupcontains a subgroup G which acts transitively on the orientededges of K such that the stabiliser Ge of every edge e is dihedralof order 4 and the stabiliser G of each vertex is a dihedralgroup the cyclic subgroup of index 2 of which acts regularlyon the edges incident with . Such a regular embedding can berealised on an orientable surface if and only if the group Ghas a subgroup H of index 2 such that H is the cyclic subgroupof index 2 in G. Let G be a separable locally compact group and let be its dualspace with Fell's topology. It is well known that the set P(G)of continuous positive-definite functions on G can be identifiedwith the set of positive linear functionals on the group C*-algebraC*(G). We show that if is discrete in , then there exists anonzero positive-definite function associated with such that is a w*-strongly exposed point of P(G)0, where P(G)0={f P(G):f(e)1. Conversely, if some nonzero positive-definite function associatedwith is a w*-strongly exposed point of P(G)0, then is isolatedin . Consequently, G is compact if and only if, for every ,there exists a nonzero positive-definite function associatedwith that is a w*-strongly exposed point of P(G)0. If, in addition,G is unimodular and , then is isolated in if and only if somenonzero positive-definite function associated with is a w*-stronglyexposed point of P(G)0, where is the left regular representationof G and is the reduced dual space of G. We prove that if B(G)has the Radon–Nikodym property, then the set of isolatedpoints of (so square-integrable if G is unimodular) is densein . It is also proved that if G is a separable SIN-group, thenG is amenable if and only if there exists a closed point in. We show that every twisted action (, ) of a locally compactgroup G on a C*-algebra A is Morita equivalent to an ordinaryaction of G/N, where N is the domain of . This result allowsus to apply many results known for ordinary covariant systemsto the more general twisted case. Let G be a permutation group on a finite set . A sequence B=(1,..., b) of points in is called a base if its pointwise stabilizerin G is the identity. Bases are of fundamental importance incomputational algorithms for permutation groups. For both practicaland theoretical reasons, one is interested in the minimal basesize for (G, ), For a nonredundant base B, the elementary inequality2|B||G||||B| holds; in particular, |B|log|G|/log||. In the casewhen G is primitive on , Pyber [8, p. 207] has conjectured thatthe minimal base size is less than Clog|G|/log|| for some (large)universal constant C. It appears that the hardest case of Pyber's conjecture is thatof primitive affine groups. Let H=GV be a primitive affine group;here the point stabilizer G acts faithfully and irreduciblyon the elementary abelian regular normal subgroup V of H, andwe may assume that =V. For positive integers m, let mV denotethe direct sum of m copies of V. If (v1, ..., vm)mV belongsto a regular G-orbit, then (0, v1, ..., vm) is a base for theprimitive affine group H. Conversely, a base (1, ..., b) forH which contains 0V= gives rise to a regular G-orbit on (b–1)V. Thus Pyber's conjecture for affine groups can be viewed asa regular orbit problem for G-modules, and it is therefore aspecial case of an important problem in group representationtheory. The derivation problem for a locally compact group G is to decidewhether for each derivation D from L1(G) into L1(G) there isa bounded measure µM(G) with D(a) = aµ–µa(a L1(G)). In this paper we obtain an affirmative answer forthe case of connected groups. To explain the contents of thispaper we give an equivalent formulation of the problem. Supposethat the group G acts as a group of homeomorphisms of the locallycompact space X. Related to this there is an action of G onM(X). A bounded crossed homomorphism from G to M(X) is a map with bounded range and satisfying (gh) = g(h)+(g) (g, h G).The problem for bounded crossed homomorphisms is to decide iffor each such there is an element µ of M(X) with (g)= gµ– µ (g G). The derivation problem isequivalent to this bounded crossed homomorphism problem forthe special case X = G where G acts on X by conjugation (togetherwith some mild continuity hypotheses about the map :GM(X) whichare often automatically satisfied). The bounded crossed homomorphismproblem always has a positive solution if G is amenable anda closely related calculation shows that in solving the boundedcrossed homomorphism problem we need only solve it for functions which are zero on H where H is a given amenable subgroup ofG. It can happen that this condition of being zero on H forces to be zero even when H is a comparatively small subgroup ofG. If h is an element of G such that ‘hnx ’ asn for all x X then for any two measures µ and , forlarge values of n, µ and hn have little overlap so ||µ+ hn|| ||µ|| + ||||. Suppose that K is a cone in a real Hilbert space with K = {0},and that A: is a self-adjoint operator which maps K intoitself. If ||A|| is an eigenvalue of A, it is shown that ithas an eigenvector in the cone. As a corollary, it follows thatif ||A||n is an eigenvalue of An, then ||A|| is an eigenvalueof A which has an eigenvector in K. The role of the support-boundaryof K in the simplicity of the principal eigenvalue ||A|| isinvestigated. If H is a separable Hilbert space, it is shownthat ||A|| (A); that is, the spectral radius of A lies in thespectrum of A. When A is compact, we obtain a very elementaryproof of the Krein-Rutman Theorem in the self-adjoint case withoutassuming that K = {0}.  相似文献
