A two‐grid variational multiscale method based on two local Gauss integrations for solving the stationary natural convection problem is presented in this article. A significant feature of the method is that we solve the natural convection problem on a coarse mesh using finite element variational multiscale method based on two local Gauss integrations firstly, and then find a fine grid solution by solving a linearized problem on a fine grid. In the computation, we introduce two local Gauss integrations as a stabilizing term to replace the projection operator without adding other variables. The stability estimates and convergence analysis of the new method are derived. Ample numerical experiments are performed to validate the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the efficiency of the new method. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A combination method of two-grid discretization approach with a recent finite element variational multiscale algorithm for simulation of the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations is proposed and analyzed. The method consists of a global small-scale nonlinear Navier–Stokes problem on a coarse grid and local linearized residual problems in overlapped fine grid subdomains, where the numerical form of the Navier–Stokes equations on the coarse grid is stabilized by a stabilization term based on two local Gauss integrations at element level and defined by the difference between a consistent and an under-integrated matrix involving the gradient of velocity. By the technical tool of local a priori estimate for the finite element solution, error bounds of the discrete solution are estimated. Algorithmic parameter scalings are derived. Numerical tests are also given to verify the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

A finite element variational multiscale method based on two local Gauss integrations is applied to solve numerically the time‐dependent incompressible Navier–Stokes equations. A significant feature of the method is that the definition of the stabilization term is derived via two local Guass integrations at element level, making it more efficient than the usual projection‐based variational multiscale methods. It is computationally cheap and gives an accurate approximation to the quantities sought. Based on backward Euler and Crank–Nicolson schemes for temporal discretization, we derive error bounds of the fully discrete solution which are first and second order in time, respectively. Numerical tests are also given to verify the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work presents a variational multiscale method based on polynomial bubble functions as subgrid scale and a numerical implementation based on two local Gauss integrations. This method can be implemented easily and efficiently for the convection-dominated problem. Static condensation of the bubbles suggests the stability of the method and we establish its global convergence. Representative numerical tests are presented.

Based on fully overlapping domain decomposition and a recent variational multiscale method, a parallel finite element variational multiscale method for convection dominated incompressible flows is proposed and analyzed. In this method, each processor computes a local finite element solution in its own subdomain using a global mesh that is locally refined around its own subdomain, where a stabilization term based on two local Gauss integrations is adopted to stabilize the numerical form of the Navier–Stokes equations. Using the technical tool of local a priori estimate for the finite element solution, error bounds of the discrete solution are estimated. Algorithmic parameter scalings are derived. Numerical tests are also given to verify the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper presents and studies three two-grid stabilized quadratic equal-order finite element algorithms based on two local Gauss integrations for the steady Navier–Stokes equations with damping. In these algorithms, we first solve a stabilized nonlinear problem on a coarse grid, and then pass the coarse grid solution to a fine grid and solve a stabilized linear problem. Using some nonlinear analysis techniques, we analyze stability of the algorithms and derive optimal order error estimates of the approximate solutions. Theoretical and numerical results show that, when the algorithmic parameters are chosen appropriately, the accuracy of the approximate solutions computed by our two-grid stabilized algorithms is comparable to that of solving a fully stabilized nonlinear problem on the same fine grid; however, our two-grid algorithms save a large amount of CPU time than the one-grid stabilized algorithm.

In this article, supposing that the velocity, pressure, and temperature are approximated by the elements , and applying the orthogonal projection technique, we introduce two Gauss integrations as a stabilizing term in the common variational multiscale (VMS) method and derive a new VMS (Two Gauss VMS) method for steady‐state natural convection problem. Comparing with the common VMS method, the Two Gauss VMS method does not need to introduce any extra variable and reduces the degrees of freedom of the discrete system a lot, but gets the same stabilized result. The effectiveness and stability of the Two Gauss VMS method are further demonstrated through two numerical examples. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new error correction method for the stationary Navier-Stokes equations based on two local Gauss integrations is presented. Applying the orthogonal projection technique, we introduce two local Gauss integrations as a stabilizing term in the error correction method, and derive a new error correction method. In both the coarse solution computation step and the error computation step, a locally stabilizing term based on two local Gauss integrations is introduced. The stability and convergence of the new error correction algorithm are established. Numerical examples are also presented to verify the theoretical analysis and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

In this report, we present and study a fully discrete finite element variational multiscale scheme for the unsteady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations where high Reynolds numbers are allowed. The scheme uses conforming finite element pairs for spatial discretization and a three-point difference formula for temporal discretization which is of second-order, where a stabilization term based on two local Gauss integrations is employed to stabilize the numerical scheme. We prove stability of the scheme, derive a priori error estimates for the fully discrete solution, and finally, give some numerical results to verify the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed numerical scheme.

Two‐grid variational multiscale (VMS) algorithms for the incompressible Navier‐Stokes equations with friction boundary conditions are presented in this article. First, one‐grid VMS algorithm is used to solve this problem and some error estimates are derived. Then, two‐grid VMS algorithms are proposed and analyzed. The algorithms consist of nonlinear problem on coarse grid and linearized problem (Stokes problem or Oseen problem) on fine grid. Moreover, the stability and convergence of the present algorithms are established. Finally, Numerical results are shown to confirm the theoretical analysis. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, on the basis of two-level discretizations and multiscale finite element method, two kinds of finite element algorithms for steady Navier-Stokes problem are presented and discussed. The main technique is first to use a standard finite element discretization on a coarse mesh to approximate low frequencies, then to apply the simple and Newton scheme to linearize discretizations on a fine grid. At this process, multiscale finite element method as a stabilized method deals with the lowest equal-order finite element pairs not satisfying the inf-sup condition. Under the uniqueness condition, error analyses for both algorithms are given. Numerical results are reported to demonstrate the effectiveness of the simple and Newton scheme.

An implicit multilevel finite volume solver on adaptively refined quadtree meshes is presented for the solution of steady state flow problems. The nonlinear problem arising from the implicit time discretization is solved by an adaptive FAS multigrid method. Local grid adaptation is performed by means of a multiscale-based strategy. For this purpose data of the flow field are decomposed into coarse grid information and a sequence of detail coefficients that describe the difference between two refinement levels and reveal insight into the local regularity behavior of the solution. Here wavelet techniques are employed for the multiscale analysis. The key idea of the present work is to use the transfer operators of the multiscale analysis for the prolongation and restriction operator in the FAS cycle. The efficiency of the solver is investigated by means of an inviscid 2D flow over a bump.

Based on two‐grid discretizations, a two‐parameter stabilized finite element method for the steady incompressible Navier–Stokes equations at high Reynolds numbers is presented and studied. In this method, a stabilized Navier–Stokes problem is first solved on a coarse grid, and then a correction is calculated on a fine grid by solving a stabilized linear problem. The stabilization term for the nonlinear Navier–Stokes equations on the coarse grid is based on an elliptic projection, which projects higher‐order finite element interpolants of the velocity into a lower‐order finite element interpolation space. For the linear problem on the fine grid, either the same stabilization approach (with a different stabilization parameter) as that for the coarse grid problem or a completely different stabilization approach could be employed. Error bounds for the discrete solutions are estimated. Algorithmic parameter scalings of the method are also derived. The theoretical results show that, with suitable scalings of the algorithmic parameters, this method can yield an optimal convergence rate. Numerical results are provided to verify the theoretical predictions and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In this work, the residual‐type posteriori error estimates of stabilized finite volume method are studied for the steady Stokes problem based on two local Gauss integrations. By using the residuals between the source term and numerical solutions, the computable global upper and local lower bounds for the errors of velocity in H1 norm and pressure in L2 norm are derived. Furthermore, a global upper bound of u ? uh in L2‐norm is also derived. Finally, some numerical experiments are provided to verify the performances of the established error estimators. We present an explicit sixth‐order compact finite difference scheme for fast high‐accuracy numerical solutions of the two‐dimensional convection diffusion equation with variable coefficients. The sixth‐order scheme is based on the well‐known fourth‐order compact (FOC) scheme, the Richardson extrapolation technique, and an operator interpolation scheme. For a particular implementation, we use multiscale multigrid method to compute the fourth‐order solutions on both the coarse grid and the fine grid. Then, an operator interpolation scheme combined with the Richardson extrapolation technique is used to compute a sixth‐order accurate fine grid solution. We compare the computed accuracy and the implementation cost of the new scheme with the standard nine‐point FOC scheme and Sun–Zhang's sixth‐order method. Two convection diffusion problems are solved numerically to validate our proposed sixth‐order scheme. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2011  相似文献

In this article, we analyze a quadratic equal‐order stabilized finite element approximation for the incompressible Stokes equations based on two local Gauss integrations. Our method only offsets the discrete pressure gradient space by the residual of the simple and symmetry term at element level to circumvent the inf‐sup condition. And this method does not require specification of a stabilization parameter, and always leads to a symmetric linear system. Furthermore, this method is unconditionally stable, and can be implemented at the element level with minimal additional cost. Finally, we give some numerical simulations to show good stability and accuracy properties of the method. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2010  相似文献

In this article, we consider a fully discrete stabilized finite element method based on two local Gauss integrations for the two-dimensional time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. It focuses on the lowest equal-order velocity-pressure pairs. Unlike the other stabilized method, the present approach does not require specification of a stabilization parameter or calculation of higher-order derivatives, and always leads to a symmetric linear system. The Euler semi-implicit scheme is used for the time discretization. It is shown that the proposed fully discrete stabilized finite element method results in the optimal order bounds for the velocity and pressure.
