Logarithms are notorious for being a difficult concept to understand and teach. Research suggests that learners can be supported in understanding logarithms by making connections between mathematics and science concepts such as pH. This study investigated how an integrated chemistry and mathematics lesson impacted 29 teachers’ understanding of the logarithmic relationship and pH. Pre- and post-test data indicated 23 teachers improved their understanding of logarithms and 28 improved their understanding of pH, suggesting that teacher educators in both science and mathematics context can use this approach to foster better understanding with their teachers and ultimately school students. Our analysis also identified professional development components and teacher characteristics associated with gains in understanding of pH and logarithms, which mathematics and science teacher educators can use to strategically adapt and implement the lesson within other teacher education settings.  相似文献

This paper discusses the experience of a preservice secondary mathematics teacher during lesson study. Although the preservice teacher was a strong undergraduate mathematics student, she used compensation “moves” to deflect attention away from her insecurities about her conceptual understanding of secondary mathematics. She feared being labeled as “dumb” and redirected conversations in order to protect her identity as a knower of mathematics. This paper investigates the culture in which preservice teachers develop confidence in their personal mathematics knowledge and how that confidence may influence behavior.  相似文献

As part of a larger study, four mathematics teachers from diverse backgrounds and teaching situations report their ideas on teacher stress, mathematics teacher retention, and their feelings about the needs of mathematics teachers, as well as other information crucial to retaining quality teachers. The responses from the participants were used to develop a hierarchy of teachers’ needs that resembles Maslow's hierarchy, which can be used to better support teachers in various stages of their careers. The interviews revealed both non content-specific and content-specific needs within the hierarchy. The responses show that teachers found different schools foster different stress levels and that as teachers they used a number of resources for reducing stress. Other mathematics-specific ideas are also discussed such as the amount of content and pedagogy courses required for certification.  相似文献

Researchers have increasingly linked teacher effectiveness with teacher knowledge of subject matter, curriculum, and teaching. Moreover, teacher knowledge of students has been regarded as another very significant component of teacher knowledge, influencing the classroom practice and student performance. Knowing students as mathematics learners means being aware of the ways students learn certain topics. This study examined the knowledge of students as mathematics learners displayed by four 1st grade teachers from Romania when designing and implementing a lesson on numbers 10–100. Findings show that knowledge of students as mathematics learners influenced the ways teachers planned and implemented their lesson. Teachers learned about students as mathematics learners from one series to another, and they tailored their use of manipulatives and classroom activities to meet the needs of their current students.  相似文献

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) integration is a desired outcome according to Next Generation Science Standards. However, learning to teach integrated STEM content has been challenging for teachers. Consequently, the purpose of this qualitative study was to describe how 16 preservice teachers enrolled in a mathematics methods course created integrated STEM lesson plans that incorporated an authentic engineering problem. Content analysis of the completed integrated STEM lesson plans used the Quality K-12 Engineering Education Framework to identify any characteristics of engineering. We found that 15 of 16 preservice teachers demonstrated at least an emerging ability to create an integrated STEM lesson that contained an engineering problem, constraints, a prototype or model, model testing, and data collection and analysis related to the model. We concluded that giving preservice teachers opportunities to experience engineering design problems could better prepare them to design and implement integrated STEM education in their classrooms. The findings from this study have practical implications for mathematics methods teacher educators who teach the pedagogy behind STEM education. This study also has theoretical implications because socially situated learning theory was extended to Model-Eliciting Activities and connected them to the K-12 Framework for Quality Engineering Education.  相似文献

The learner’s perspective study, motivated by a strong belief that the characterization of the practices of mathematics classrooms must attend to learner practice with at least the same priority as that accorded to teacher practice, is a comprehensive study that adopts a complementary accounts methodology to negotiate meanings in classrooms. In Singapore, three mathematics teachers recognized for their locally defined ‘teaching competence’ participated in the study. The comprehensive sets of data from the three classrooms have been used to explore several premises related to the teaching and learning of mathematics. In this paper the student interview data and the teacher interview data were examined to ascertain what do students attach importance to and what do teachers attach importance to in a mathematics lesson? The findings of the student interview data showed that they attached importance to several sub-aspects of the three main aspects, i.e., exposition, seatwork and review and feedback of their teachers’ pedagogical practices. The findings of the teacher interview data showed that they attached importance to student’s self assessment, teacher’s demonstration of procedures, review of prior knowledge and close monitoring of their student’s progress in learning and detailed feedback of their work. It was also found that teachers and students did attach importance to some common lesson events.  相似文献

International comparative studies such as the Trend in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) indicate that Korean students have consistently performed well. In addition, a recent study titled Mathematics Teaching in the 21st Century (MT21) compared prospective teachers’ knowledge and beliefs about teaching and learning in six participant countries, reporting that Korean prospective secondary mathematics teachers were better prepared than those in other countries. In this context, this study has examined the curricula for mathematics teacher education and teacher employment tests in order to investigate the social expectation for teacher professionalization in Korea, particularly focusing on teacher knowledge. The analysis shows that while elementary mathematics teacher education emphasizes pedagogical knowledge, the secondary mathematics education curricula are highly content knowledge oriented. However, the secondary mathematics teacher education includes various aspects of pedagogical content knowledge in its curricula and teacher employment test. This research also identifies the discourse concerning mathematics instruction for diversity and equity and the emphasis of reflective practice as the significant development of the current Korean teacher education.  相似文献

In this paper, we argue that dual design research (DDR) is a fruitful way to promote and trace the development of a mathematics teacher’s expertise. We address the question of how a teacher participating in dual design research can learn to scaffold students’ development of the language required for mathematical learning in multilingual classrooms. Empirical data were collected from two teaching experiments (each with 8 lessons, and 21 and 22 students, aged 11–12 years), for which lesson series about line graphs were co-designed by the researchers and the teacher. The teacher’s learning process was promoted (e.g. by conducting stimulated recall interviews and providing feedback) and traced (e.g. by carrying out 5 pre- and post-interviews before and after the teaching experiments). An analytic framework for teachers’ reported and derived learning outcomes was used to analyse pre- and post-interviews. The teacher’s learning process was analysed in terms of changes in knowledge and beliefs, changes in practice and intentions for practice. Further analysis showed that this learning process could be attributed to the characteristics of dual design research, for instance the cyclic and interventionist character, the continuous process of prediction and reflection that lies at its heart, and the process of co-designing complemented with stimulated recall interviews.  相似文献

In this article, we aim to provide a glimpse of what is counted as good mathematics instruction from Taiwanese perspectives and of various approaches developed and used for achieving high-quality mathematics instruction. The characteristics of good mathematics instruction from Taiwanese perspectives were first collected and discussed from three types of information sources. Although the number of characteristics of good mathematics instruction may vary from one source to another, they can be generally organized in three phases including lesson design before instruction, classroom instruction during the lesson and activities after lesson. In addition to the general overview of mathematics classroom instruction valued in Taiwan, we also analyzed 92 lessons from six experienced teachers whose instructional practices were generally valued in local schools and counties. We identified and discussed the characteristics of their instructional practices in three themes: features of problems and their uses in classroom instruction, aspects of problem–solution discussion and reporting, and the discussion of solution methods. To identify and promote high-quality mathematics instruction, various approaches have been developed and used in Taiwan including the development and use of new textbooks and teachers’ guides, teaching contests, master teacher training program, and teacher professional development programs.  相似文献

In this article, we present a re-framing of teacher development that derives from our convictions regarding the enactive approach to cognition and the biological basis of being. We firstly set out our enactivist stance and then distinguish our approach to teacher development from others in the mathematics education literature. We show how a way of working that develops expertise runs through all mathematics education courses at the University of Bristol, and distil key principles for running collaborative groups of teachers. We exemplify these principles further through analysis of one group that met over 2 years as part of a research project focused on the work of Gattegno. We provide evidence for the effectiveness of the group in terms of teacher development. We conclude by arguing that the way of working in this group cannot be separated from the history of interaction of participants.  相似文献

In this article, we aim to examine the features of mathematics classroom instruction excellence valued in China. The popular approach to pursuing mathematics classroom instruction excellence through exemplary lesson development is also investigated to demonstrate the nature of teaching culture that has been advocated and nurtured in China. Features of an exemplary lesson are analyzed in detail, and the practicing teacher’s experience through participating in the development of the exemplary lesson is examined as well. Finally, the implications of developing exemplary lessons for pursuing excellence in mathematics classroom instruction as a culturally valued approach in China are also discussed.  相似文献

Mathematics education research has not sufficiently theorized about mathematics teacher knowledge and practice, teacher learning, and teacher education in ways that are reflective of the specificities of the sociopolitical contexts of schooling. In the USA, this is particularly important for urban mathematics education. This paper examines the affordances and challenges of representing context in video records of practice, particularly in the urban context, for use in the preparation of mathematics teachers for urban settings. The discussion, grounded in current research and theory relevant to representations of teaching, urban education, and mathematics teacher education, takes up three key issues: how is a focus on the urban context relevant to the design of video records of practice for mathematics teacher education? How can video records support prospective teachers’ understandings of the sociopolitical contexts of mathematics teaching? This paper comments on the other papers in this issue related to how “mathematics teaching expertise” is conceptualized and the approaches employed to facilitate its development in Western and Eastern countries. Similarities and differences are found to exist in the conceptualization of mathematics teaching expertise and the development approaches employed. The papers in this issue share the similarity of exploring mathematics teaching expertise from the perspective of knowledge. Under the influence of this perspective, the approaches mentioned in the papers mainly focus on the development of teachers’ knowledge. A feature in common among teacher development approaches employed in Western countries is to let teachers attend some courses or training programs designed or organized by mathematics teacher educators at universities. In contrast, teacher development approaches employed in Eastern countries, particularly those employed in Mainland China, are relatively more practical in nature and directly related to teachers’ needs, like learning from observing exemplary teaching. This shows that the conception of mathematics teaching expertise and development approaches are culturally and contextually dependent. It is argued that a broader perspective of mathematics teaching expertise should be taken to explore mathematics teaching expertise and its development, and teacher expertise development should be conceptualized as a complex system rather than as some separated knowledge, skills and techniques.  相似文献

This study represents a first iteration in the design process of the Growing Awareness Inventory (GAIn), a structured observation protocol for building the awareness of preservice teachers (PSTs) for resources in mathematics and science classrooms that can be used for culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP). The GAIn is designed to develop awareness of: how students use language in classrooms; relationships between teacher questioning patterns and student participation; messages conveyed by the classroom environment; and ways to incorporate students’ interests into lesson plans. The methodology took the form of a multiple case study design with fourteen mathematics PSTs as one case and five science PSTs as the other case. The participants' response to the GAIn and lesson plans served as data sources. Findings reveal that the GAIn scaffolded PSTs’ awareness of their students, their own attitudes, and several elements of CRP. However, there were key areas of CRP that were neither explored with the GAIn nor identified by the participants. Consistent with design‐based research, outcomes include a design framework for revision of the GAIn and a theory of action that situates it within a teacher education course that includes a field placement.  相似文献

This paper illustrates ways to employ teacher portfolios to improve the quality of methods course experiences for prospective mathematics teachers. Based upon research conducted in an undergraduate teacher preparation program, this case study describes how the author used teacher portfolios to mentor prospective teachers in new ways. The case describes the author's experiences through a case study of his assessment of and response to one prospective teacher's portfolio. This portfolio illustrated themes that were present in other teachers' portfolios, but did so in ways that highlighted strategies for change to the methods course. Through the lens of this teacher's portfolio the author identified specific ways that the prospective teacher's beliefs were impacting her teaching practice, a result that enabled him to better help all of the teachers in the methods course reflect on their teaching. By providing a detailed account of the feedback process that led to this result, this paper illustrates how mathematics teacher educators can use prospective teachers' portfolios to enrich the quality of their methods courses.  相似文献

Teachers' abilities to design mathematics lessons are related to their capability to mobilize resources to meeting intended learning goals based on their noticing. In this process, knowing how teachers consider Students' thinking is important for understanding how they are making decisions to promote student learning. While teaching, what teachers notice influences their decision‐making process. This article explores the mathematics lesson planning practices of four 4th‐grade teachers at the same school to understand how their consideration of Students' learning influences planning decisions. Case study methodology was used to gain an in‐depth perspective of the mathematics planning practices of the teachers. Results indicate the teachers took varying approaches in how they considered students. One teacher adapted instruction based on Students' conceptual understanding, two teachers aimed at producing skill‐efficient students, and the final teacher regulated learning with a strict adherence to daily lessons in curriculum materials, with little emphasis on student understanding. These findings highlight the importance of providing professional development support to teachers focused on their noticing and considerations of Students' mathematical understandings as related to learning outcomes. These findings are distinguished from other studies because of the focus on how teachers consider Students' thinking during lesson planning. The importance of beliefs for the teaching and learning of mathematics is widely recognized among mathematics educators. In this special issue, we explicitly address what we call “beliefs and beyond” to indicate the larger field surrounding beliefs in mathematics education. This is done to broaden the discussion to related concepts (which may not originate in mathematics education) and to consider the interconnectedness of concepts. In particular, we present some new developments at the conceptual level, address different approaches to investigate beliefs, highlight the role of student beliefs in problem-solving activities, and discuss teacher beliefs and their significance for professional development. One specific intention is to consider expertise from colleagues in the fields of educational research and psychology, side by side with perspectives provided by researchers from mathematics education.  相似文献

This paper attempts to explore certain characteristics of the mathematics classroom by investigating how teachers from three different cultures, namely, the Czech Republic, Hong Kong and Shanghai, handle Pythagoras' theorem at eighth grade. Based on a fine-grained analysis of one lesson, from each of the three places, some features in terms of the ways of handling the same topic were revealed, as follows: the Hong Kong teacher and the Shanghai teacher emphasized exploring Pythagoras' theorem, the Shanghai teacher seemed to emphasize mathematical proofs, while the Czech teacher and the Hong Kong teacher tended to verify the theorem visually. It was found that the Czech teacher and the Hong Kong teacher put stress on demonstrating with some degree of student input in the process of learning. On the other hand, the Shanghai teacher demonstrated a constructive learning scenario: students were actively involved in the process of learning under the teacher's control through a series of deliberate activities. Regarding the classroom exercises, the Shanghai teacher tended to vary problems implicitly within a mathematical context, while the teachers in the other two places preferred varying problems explicitly within both mathematical and daily life contexts.  相似文献
