Abstract

In this article we consider a continuous review perishable inventory system in which the demands arrive according to a Markovian arrival process (MAP). The items in the inventory have shelf life times that are assumed to follow an exponential distribution. The inventory is replenished according to an (s, S) policy and the replenishing times are assumed to follow a phase type distribution. The demands that occur during stock out periods either enter a pool which has capacity N (<∞) or leave the system. Any demand that arrives when the pool is full and the inventory level is zero, is also assumed to be lost. The demands in the pool are selected one by one, if the replenished stock is above s, with interval time between any two successive selections is distributed as exponential with parameter depending on the number of customers in the pool. The joint probability distribution of the number of customers in the pool and the inventory level is obtained in the steady state case. The measures of system performance in the steady state are derived and the total expected cost rate is also calculated. The results are illustrated numerically.  相似文献

In this article, we consider a continuous review (s,S)(s,S) perishable inventory system with a service facility, wherein the demand of a customer is satisfied only after performing some service on the item which is assumed to be of random duration. We also assume that the demands are generated by a finite homogeneous population. The service time, the lead time are assumed to have Phase type distribution. The life time of the item is assumed to have exponential distributions. The joint distribution of the number of customers in the system and the inventory level is obtained in the steady state case. The Laplace–Stieltjes transform of the waiting time of the tagged customer is derived. Various system performance measures are derived and the total expected cost rate is computed under a suitable cost structure. The results are illustrated numerically.  相似文献

Sherman and Kharoufeh (Oper. Res. Lett. 34:697–705, [2006]) considered an M/M/1 type queueing system with unreliable server and retrials. In this model it is assumed that if the server fails during service of a customer, the customer leaves the server, joins a retrial group and in random intervals repeats attempts to get service. We suggest an alternative method for analysis of the Markov process, which describes the functioning of the system, and find the joint distribution of the server state, the number of customers in the queue and the number of customers in the retrial group in steady state.   相似文献

Abstract

This paper analyzes an (s, S) Inventory system where arrivals of customers form a Poisson process. When inventory level reaches zero due to demands, further demands are sent to a pool which has capacity M(<∞). Service to the pooled customers will be provided after replenishment against the order placed on reaching that level s. Further they are served only if the inventory level is at least s + 1. The lead-time is exponentially distributed. The joint probability distribution of the number of customers in the pool and the Inventory level is obtained in both the transient and steady state cases. Some measures of the system performance in the steady state are derived and some numerical illustrations are provided.  相似文献

In this paper, we study a discrete time queueing system with multiple types of customers and a first-come-first-served (FCFS) service discipline. Customers arrive according to a semi-Markov arrival process and the service times of individual customers have PH-distributions. A GI/M/1 type Markov chain for a generalized age process of batches of customers is introduced. The steady state distribution of the GI/M/1 type Markov chain is found explicitly and, consequently, the steady state distributions of the age of the batch in service, the total workload in the system, waiting times, and sojourn times of different batches and different types of customers are obtained. We show that the generalized age process and a generalized total workload process have the same steady state distribution. We prove that the waiting times and sojourn times have PH-distributions and find matrix representations of those PH-distributions. When the arrival process is a Markov arrival process with marked transitions, we construct a QBD process for the age process and the total workload process. The steady state distributions of the waiting times and the sojourn times, both at the batch level and the customer level, are obtained from the steady state distribution of the QBD process. A number of numerical examples are presented to gain insight into the waiting processes of different types of customers.AMS subject classification: 60K25, 60J10This revised version was published online in June 2005 with corrected coverdate  相似文献

We study an (sS) production inventory system where the processing of inventory requires a positive random amount of time. As a consequence a queue of demands is formed. Demand process is assumed to be Poisson, duration of each service and time required to add an item to the inventory when the production is on, are independent, non-identically distributed exponential random variables. We assume that no customer joins the queue when the inventory level is zero. This assumption leads to an explicit product form solution for the steady state probability vector, using a simple approach. This is despite the fact that there is a strong correlation between the lead-time (the time required to add an item into the inventory) and the number of customers waiting in the system. The technique is: combine the steady state vector of the classical M/M/1 queue and the steady state vector of a production inventory system where the service is instantaneous and no backlogs are allowed. Using a similar technique, the expected length of a production cycle is also obtained explicitly. The optimal values of S and the production switching on level s have been studied for a cost function involving the steady state system performance measures. Since we have obtained explicit expressions for the performance measures, analytic expressions have been derived for calculating the optimal values of S and s.  相似文献

Abstract

The M|G|1 retrial queue with nonpersistent customers and orbital search is considered. If the server is busy at the time of arrival of a primary customer, then with probability 1 ? H 1 it leaves the system without service, and with probability H 1 > 0, it enters into an orbit. Similarly, if the server is occupied at the time of arrival of an orbital customer, with probability 1 ? H 2, it leaves the system without service, and with probability H 2 > 0, it goes back to the orbit. Immediately after the completion of each service, the server searches for customers in the orbit with probability p > 0, and remains idle with probability 1 ? p. Search time is assumed to be negligible. In the case H 2 = 1, the model is analyzed in full detail using the supplementary variable method. The joint distribution of the server state and the orbit length in steady state is studied. The structure of the busy period and its analysis in terms of Laplace transform is discussed. We also provide a direct method of calculation for the first and second moment of the busy period. In the case H 2 < 1, closed form solution is obtained for exponentially distributed service time, in terms of hypergeometric series.  相似文献

In this paper we analyze two single server queueing-inventory systems in which items in the inventory have a random common life time. On realization of common life time, all customers in the system are flushed out. Subsequently the inventory reaches its maximum level S through a (positive lead time) replenishment for the next cycle which follows an exponential distribution. Through cancellation of purchases, inventory gets added until their expiry time; where cancellation time follows exponential distribution. Customers arrive according to a Poisson process and service time is exponentially distributed. On arrival if a customer finds the server busy, then he joins a buffer of varying size. If there is no inventory, the arriving customer first try to queue up in a finite waiting room of capacity K. Finding that at full, he joins a pool of infinite capacity with probability γ (0 < γ < 1); else it is lost to the system forever. We discuss two models based on ‘transfer’ of customers from the pool to the waiting room / buffer. In Model 1 when, at a service completion epoch the waiting room size drops to preassigned number L ? 1 (1 < L < K) or below, a customer is transferred from pool to waiting room with probability p (0 < p < 1) and positioned as the last among the waiting customers. If at a departure epoch the waiting room turns out to be empty and there is at least one customer in the pool, then the one ahead of all waiting in the pool gets transferred to the waiting room with probability one. We introduce a totally different transfer mechanism in Model 2: when at a service completion epoch, the server turns idle with at least one item in the inventory, the pooled customer is immediately taken for service. At the time of a cancellation if the server is idle with none, one or more customers in the waiting room, then the head of the pooled customer go to the buffer directly for service. Also we assume that no customer joins the system when there is no item in the inventory. Several system performance measures are obtained. A cost function is discussed for each model and some numerical illustrations are presented. Finally a comparison of the two models are made.  相似文献

We consider an M [X]/G/1 retrial queue subject to breakdowns where the retrial time is exponential and independent of the number of customers applying for service. If a coming batch of customers finds the server idle, one of the arriving customers begins his service immediately and the rest joins a retrial group (called orbit) to repeat his request later; otherwise, if the server is busy or down, all customers of the coming batch enter the orbit. It is assumed that the server has a constant failure rate and arbitrary repair time distribution. We study the ergodicity of the embedded Markov chain, its stationary distribution and the joint distribution of the server state and the orbit size in steady-state. The orbit and system size distributions are obtained as well as some performance measures of the system. The stochastic decomposition property and the asymptotic behavior under high rate of retrials are discussed. We also analyse some reliability problems, the k-busy period and the ordinary busy period of our retrial queue. Besides, we give a recursive scheme to compute the distribution of the number of served customers during the k-busy period and the ordinary busy period. The effects of several parameters on the system are analysed numerically. I. Atencia’s and Moreno’s research is supported by the MEC through the project MTM2005-01248.  相似文献

Abstract

We discuss a single commodity continuous review (s, S) inventory system in which commodities get damaged due to external disaster. Shortages are not permitted and lead time is assumed to be zero. The interarrival times of demands constitute a family of i.i.d. random variables with a common arbitrary distribution. The quantity demanded at a demand epoch is arbitrarily distributed which depends only on the time elapsed since the last demand epoch. Transient and steady state probabilities of the inventory levels are derived by identifying suitable semi-regenerative process. In the case when the demand is for unit item and the disaster affects only an exhibiting item, the steady state probability distribution is obtained as uniform. An optimization problem is discussed and numerical examples are provided.  相似文献

We give in this paper an algorithm to compute the sojourn time distribution in the processor sharing, single server queue with Poisson arrivals and phase type distributed service times. In a first step, we establish the differential system governing the conditional sojourn times probability distributions in this queue, given the number of customers in the different phases of the PH distribution at the arrival instant of a customer. This differential system is then solved by using a uniformization procedure and an exponential of matrix. The proposed algorithm precisely consists of computing this exponential with a controlled accuracy. This algorithm is then used in practical cases to investigate the impact of the variability of service times on sojourn times and the validity of the so-called reduced service rate (RSR) approximation, when service times in the different phases are highly dissymmetrical. For two-stage PH distributions, we give conjectures on the limiting behavior in terms of an M/M/1 PS queue and provide numerical illustrative examples. This revised version was published online in June 2005 with corrected coverdate  相似文献

This paper studies the operating characteristics of the variant of an M[x]/G/1 vacation queue with startup and closedown times. After all the customers are served in the system exhaustively, the server shuts down (deactivates) by a closedown time, and then takes at most J vacations of constant time length T repeatedly until at least one customer is found waiting in the queue upon returning from a vacation. If at least one customer is present in the system when the server returns from a vacation, then the server reactivates and requires a startup time before providing the service. On the other hand, if no customers arrive by the end of the J th vacation, the server remains dormant in the system until at least one customer arrives. We will call the vacation policy modified T vacation policy. We derive the steady‐state probability distribution of the system size and the queue waiting time. Other system characteristics are also investigated. The long‐run average cost function per unit time is developed to determine the suitable thresholds of T and J that yield a minimum cost. A single server queue with Poisson arrivals and exponential service times is studied. The system suffers disastrous breakdowns at an exponential rate, resulting in the loss of all running and waiting customers. When the system is down, it undergoes a repair mechanism where the repair time follows an exponential distribution. During the repair time any new arrival is allowed to join the system, but the customers become impatient when the server is not available for a long time. In essence, each customer, upon arrival, activates an individual timer, which again follows an exponential distribution with parameter ξ. If the system is not repaired before the customer’s timer expires, the customer abandons the queue and never returns. The time-dependent system size probabilities are presented using generating functions and continued fractions.  相似文献

In this paper we consider a single server queue in which arrivals occur according to a Poisson process and each customer's service time is exponentially distributed. The server works according to the gated process-sharing discipline. In this discipline, the server provides service to a batch of at mostm customers at a time. Once a batch of customers begins service, no other waiting customer can receive service until all members of the batch have completed their service. For this queue, we derive performance characteristics, such as waiting time distribution, queue length distribution etc. For this queue, it is possible to obtain the mean conditional response time for a customer whose service time is known. This conditional response time is a nonlinear function (as opposed to the linear case for the ordinary processor-sharing queue). A special case of the queue (wherem=) has an interesting and unusual solution. For this special case, the size of the batch for service is a Markov chain whose steady state distribution can be explicitly written down. Apart from the contribution to the theory of Markov chains and queues, the model may be applicable to scheduling of computer and communication systems.  相似文献

In this work, we consider a continuous review base stock policy inventory system with retrial demands. The maximum storage capacity is S. It is assumed that primary demand is of unit size and primary demand time points form a Poisson process. A one-to-one ordering policy is adopted. According to this policy, orders are placed for one unit, as and when the inventory level drops due to a demand. We assume that the demands occur during the stock-out periods enter into the orbit of infinite size. The lead time is assumed to be exponential. The joint probability distribution of the inventory level and the number of demands in the orbit are obtained in the steady state case. Various system performance measures in the steady state are derived. The results are illustrated with suitable numerical examples.  相似文献

We consider the M/M/∞ queueing system with arrival and service rate depending on the state of an auxiliary semi-Markov process (which can be viewed as an external environment) and find the mean number of customers in the system in steady state. In a particular case when the external environment can be only in two states we find the distribution of the number of customers in the system.   相似文献

In this paper, we consider an N-server queueing model with homogeneous servers in which customers arrive according to a stationary Poisson arrival process. The service times are exponentially distributed. Two new customer’s service disciplines assuming simultaneous service of arriving customer by all currently idle servers are discussed. The steady state analysis of the queue length and sojourn time distribution is performed by means of the matrix analytic methods. Numerical examples, which illustrate advantage of introduced disciplines comparing to the classical one, are presented.  相似文献

This paper deals with an MX/G/1 queueing system with a vacation period which comprises an idle period and a random setup period. The server is turned off each time when the system becomes empty. At this point of time the idle period starts. As soon as a customer or a batch of customers arrive, the setup of the service facility begins which is needed before starting each busy period. In this paper we study the steady state behaviour of the queue size distributions at stationary (random) point of time and at departure point of time. One of our findings is that the departure point queue size distribution is the convolution of the distributions of three independent random variables. Also, we drive analytically explicit expressions for the system state probabilities and some performance measures of this queueing system. Finally, we derive the probability generating function of the additional queue size distribution due to the vacation period as the limiting behaviour of the MX/M/1 type queueing system. We investigate the optimal management problem of an M/G/1/K queueing system with combined F policy and an exponential startup time. The F policy queueing problem investigates the most common issue of controlling the arrival to a queueing system. We present a recursive method, using the supplementary variable technique and treating the supplementary variable as the remaining service time, to obtain the steady state probability distribution of the number of customers in the system. The method is illustrated analytically for exponential service time distribution. A cost model is established to determine the optimal management F policy at minimum cost. We use an efficient Maple computer program to calculate the optimal value of F and some system performance measures. Sensitivity analysis is also investigated.  相似文献

We show in this paper that the computation of the distribution of the sojourn time of an arbitrary customer in a M/M/1 with the processor sharing discipline (abbreviated to M/M/1 PS queue) can be formulated as a spectral problem for a self-adjoint operator. This approach allows us to improve the existing results for this queue in two directions. First, the orthogonal structure underlying the M/M/1 PS queue is revealed. Second, an integral representation of the distribution of the sojourn time of a customer entering the system while there are n customers in service is obtained.  相似文献
