Heuristic optimization provides a robust and efficient approach for solving complex real-world problems. The aim of this paper is to introduce a hybrid approach combining two heuristic optimization techniques, particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithms (GA). Our approach integrates the merits of both GA and PSO and it has two characteristic features. Firstly, the algorithm is initialized by a set of random particles which travel through the search space. During this travel an evolution of these particles is performed by integrating PSO and GA. Secondly, to restrict velocity of the particles and control it, we introduce a modified constriction factor. Finally, the results of various experimental studies using a suite of multimodal test functions taken from the literature have demonstrated the superiority of the proposed approach to finding the global optimal solution.

Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs) are emerging as competitive and reliable techniques for several optimization tasks. Juxtapositioning their higher-level and implicit correspondence; it is provocative to query if one optimization algorithm can benefit from another by studying underlying similarities and dissimilarities. This paper establishes a clear and fundamental algorithmic linking between particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and genetic algorithms (GAs). Specifically, we select the task of solving unimodal optimization problems, and demonstrate that key algorithmic features of an effective Generalized Generation Gap based Genetic Algorithm can be introduced into the PSO by leveraging this algorithmic linking while significantly enhance the PSO’s performance. However, the goal of this paper is not to solve unimodal problems, neither is to demonstrate that the modified PSO algorithm resembles a GA, but to highlight the concept of algorithmic linking in an attempt towards designing efficient optimization algorithms. We intend to emphasize that the evolutionary and other optimization researchers should direct more efforts in establishing equivalence between different genetic, evolutionary and other nature-inspired or non-traditional algorithms. In addition to achieving performance gains, such an exercise shall deepen the understanding and scope of various operators from different paradigms in Evolutionary Computation (EC) and other optimization methods.

This paper proposes the hybrid NM-PSO algorithm based on the Nelder–Mead (NM) simplex search method and particle swarm optimization (PSO) for unconstrained optimization. NM-PSO is very easy to implement in practice since it does not require gradient computation. The modification of both the Nelder–Mead simplex search method and particle swarm optimization intends to produce faster and more accurate convergence. The main purpose of the paper is to demonstrate how the standard particle swarm optimizers can be improved by incorporating a hybridization strategy. In a suite of 20 test function problems taken from the literature, computational results via a comprehensive experimental study, preceded by the investigation of parameter selection, show that the hybrid NM-PSO approach outperforms other three relevant search techniques (i.e., the original NM simplex search method, the original PSO and the guaranteed convergence particle swarm optimization (GCPSO)) in terms of solution quality and convergence rate. In a later part of the comparative experiment, the NM-PSO algorithm is compared to various most up-to-date cooperative PSO (CPSO) procedures appearing in the literature. The comparison report still largely favors the NM-PSO algorithm in the performance of accuracy, robustness and function evaluation. As evidenced by the overall assessment based on two kinds of computational experience, the new algorithm has demonstrated to be extremely effective and efficient at locating best-practice optimal solutions for unconstrained optimization.

A novel hybrid evolutionary algorithm is developed based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithms (GAs). The PSO phase involves the enhancement of worst solutions by using the global-local best inertia weight and acceleration coefficients to increase the efficiency. In the genetic algorithm phase, a new rank-based multi-parent crossover is used by modifying the crossover and mutation operators which favors both the local and global exploration simultaneously. In addition, the Euclidean distance-based niching is implemented in the replacement phase of the GA to maintain the population diversity. To avoid the local optimum solutions, the stagnation check is performed and the solution is randomized when needed. The constraints are handled using an effective feasible population based approach. The parameters are self-adaptive requiring no tuning based on the type of problems. Numerical simulations are performed first to evaluate the current algorithm for a set of 24 benchmark constrained nonlinear optimization problems. The results demonstrate reasonable correlation and high quality optimum solutions with significantly less function evaluations against other state-of-the-art heuristic-based optimization algorithms. The algorithm is also applied to various nonlinear engineering optimization problems and shown to be excellent in searching for the global optimal solutions.

This paper developed a multiobjective Big Data optimization approach based on a hybrid salp swarm algorithm and the differential evolution algorithm. The role of the differential evolution algorithm is to enhance the capability of the feature exploitation of the salp swarm algorithm because the operators of the differential evolution algorithm are used as local search operators. In general, the proposed method contains three stages. In the first stage, the population is generated, and the archive is initialized. The second stage updates the solutions using the hybrid salp swarm algorithm and the differential evolution algorithm, and the final stage determines the nondominated solutions and updates the archive. To assess the performance of the proposed approach, a series of experiments were performed. A set of single-objective and multiobjective problems from the 2015 Big Data optimization competition were tested; the dataset contained data with and without noise. The results of our experiments illustrated that the proposed approach outperformed other approaches, including the baseline nondominated sorting genetic algorithm, on all test problems. Moreover, for single-objective problems, the score value of the proposed method was better than that of the traditional multiobjective salp swarm algorithm. When compared with both algorithms, that is, the adaptive DE algorithm with external archive and the hybrid multiobjective firefly algorithm, its score was the largest. In contrast, for the multiobjective functions, the scores of the proposed algorithm were higher than that of the fireworks algorithm framework.

Artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm invented recently by Karaboga is a biological-inspired optimization algorithm, which has been shown to be competitive with some conventional biological-inspired algorithms, such as genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution (DE) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). However, there is still an insufficiency in ABC algorithm regarding its solution search equation, which is good at exploration but poor at exploitation. Inspired by PSO, we propose an improved ABC algorithm called gbest-guided ABC (GABC) algorithm by incorporating the information of global best (gbest) solution into the solution search equation to improve the exploitation. The experimental results tested on a set of numerical benchmark functions show that GABC algorithm can outperform ABC algorithm in most of the experiments.

A comparative study of Artificial Bee Colony algorithm
Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm is one of the most recently introduced swarm-based algorithms. ABC simulates the intelligent foraging behaviour of a honeybee swarm. In this work, ABC is used for optimizing a large set of numerical test functions and the results produced by ABC algorithm are compared with the results obtained by genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimization algorithm, differential evolution algorithm and evolution strategies. Results show that the performance of the ABC is better than or similar to those of other population-based algorithms with the advantage of employing fewer control parameters.

Grey wolf optimizer algorithm was recently presented as a new heuristic search algorithm with satisfactory results in real-valued and binary encoded optimization problems that are categorized in swarm intelligence optimization techniques. This algorithm is more effective than some conventional population-based algorithms, such as particle swarm optimization, differential evolution and gravitational search algorithm. Some grey wolf optimizer variants were developed by researchers to improve the performance of the basic grey wolf optimizer algorithm. Inspired by particle swarm optimization algorithm, this study investigates the performance of a new algorithm called Inspired grey wolf optimizer which extends the original grey wolf optimizer by adding two features, namely, a nonlinear adjustment strategy of the control parameter, and a modified position-updating equation based on the personal historical best position and the global best position. Experiments are performed on four classical high-dimensional benchmark functions, four test functions proposed in the IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation 2005 special session, three well-known engineering design problems, and one real-world problem. The results show that the proposed algorithm can find more accurate solutions and has higher convergence rate and less number of fitness function evaluations than the other compared techniques.

In this paper, a new optimization method named gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is adopted for designing optimal linear phase finite impulse response band pass (BP) and band stop (BS) digital filters. Other various population based evolutionary algorithms like real coded genetic algorithm, conventional particle swarm optimization, differential evolution (DE), bee swarm optimization have also been applied for the sake of comparative study of the same optimal designs. In GSA, particles are considered as objects and their performances are measured by their masses. All these objects attract each other by gravity forces, and these forces produce global movements of all objects towards the objects with heavier masses. GSA guarantees the exploitation step of the algorithm and it is apparently free from premature convergence. Extensive simulation results justify superior optimization capability of GSA over the afore-mentioned optimization techniques for the solution of the multimodal, non-differentiable, highly non-linear, and constrained filter design problems.

Real engineering design problems are generally characterized by the presence of many often conflicting and incommensurable objectives. Naturally, these objectives involve many parameters whose possible values may be assigned by the experts. The aim of this paper is to introduce a hybrid approach combining three optimization techniques, dynamic programming (DP), genetic algorithms and particle swarm optimization (PSO). Our approach integrates the merits of both DP and artificial optimization techniques and it has two characteristic features. Firstly, the proposed algorithm converts fuzzy multiobjective optimization problem to a sequence of a crisp nonlinear programming problems. Secondly, the proposed algorithm uses H-SOA for solving nonlinear programming problem. In which, any complex problem under certain structure can be solved and there is no need for the existence of some properties rather than traditional methods that need some features of the problem such as differentiability and continuity. Finally, with different degree of α we get different α-Pareto optimal solution of the problem. A numerical example is given to illustrate the results developed in this paper.

The barebones differential evolution (BBDE) is a new, almost parameter-free optimization algorithm that is a hybrid of the barebones particle swarm optimizer and differential evolution. Differential evolution is used to mutate, for each particle, the attractor associated with that particle, defined as a weighted average of its personal and neighborhood best positions. The performance of the proposed approach is investigated and compared with differential evolution, a Von Neumann particle swarm optimizer and a barebones particle swarm optimizer. The experiments conducted show that the BBDE provides excellent results with the added advantage of little, almost no parameter tuning. Moreover, the performance of the barebones differential evolution using the ring and Von Neumann neighborhood topologies is investigated. Finally, the application of the BBDE to the real-world problem of unsupervised image classification is investigated. Experimental results show that the proposed approach performs very well compared to other state-of-the-art clustering algorithms in all measured criteria.

Traditionally, minimum cost transshipment problems have been simplified as linear cost problems, which are not practical in real applications. Some advanced local search algorithms have been developed to solve concave cost bipartite network problems. These have been found to be more effective than the traditional linear approximation methods and local search methods. Recently, a genetic algorithm and an ant colony system algorithm were employed to develop two global search algorithms for solving concave cost transshipment problems. These two global search algorithms were found to be more effective than the advanced local search algorithms for solving concave cost transshipment problems. Although the particle swarm optimization algorithm has been used to obtain good results in many applications, to the best of our knowledge, it has not yet been applied in minimum concave cost network flow problems. Thus, in this study, we employ an arc-based particle swarm optimization algorithm, coupled with some genetic algorithm and threshold accepting method techniques, as well as concave cost network heuristics, to develop a hybrid global search algorithm for efficiently solving minimum cost network flow problems with concave arc costs. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by solving several randomly generated network flow problems. The results indicate that the proposed algorithm is more effective than several other recently designed methods, such as local search algorithms, genetic algorithms and ant colony system algorithms, for solving minimum cost network flow problems with concave arc costs.

This paper introduces a new hybrid algorithmic nature inspired approach based on particle swarm optimization, for solving successfully one of the most popular logistics management problems, the location routing problem (LRP). The proposed algorithm for the solution of the location routing problem, the hybrid particle swarm optimization (HybPSO-LRP), combines a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, the multiple phase neighborhood search – greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (MPNS-GRASP) algorithm, the expanding neighborhood search (ENS) strategy and a path relinking (PR) strategy. The algorithm is tested on a set of benchmark instances. The results of the algorithm are very satisfactory for these instances and for six of them a new best solution has been found.

The main goal of supply chain management is to coordinate and collaborate the supply chain partners seamlessly. On the other hand, bi-level linear programming is a technique for modeling decentralized decision. It consists of the upper level and lower level objectives. Thus, this paper intends to apply bi-level linear programming to supply chain distribution problem and develop an efficient method based on hybrid of genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The performance of the proposed method is ascertained by comparing the results with GA and PSO using four problems in the literature and a supply chain distribution model.

This paper develops the OPUS (Optimization by Particle swarm Using Surrogates) framework for expensive black-box optimization. In each iteration, OPUS considers multiple trial positions for each particle in the swarm and uses a surrogate model to identify the most promising trial position. Moreover, the current overall best position is refined by finding the global minimum of the surrogate in the neighborhood of that position. OPUS is implemented using an RBF surrogate and the resulting OPUS-RBF algorithm is applied to a 36-D groundwater bioremediation problem, a 14-D watershed calibration problem, and ten mostly 30-D test problems. OPUS-RBF is compared with a standard PSO, CMA-ES, two other surrogate-assisted PSO algorithms, and an RBF-assisted evolution strategy. The numerical results suggest that OPUS-RBF is promising for expensive black-box optimization.

We propose a novel cooperative swarm intelligence algorithm to solve multi-objective discrete optimization problems (MODP). Our algorithm combines a firefly algorithm (FA) and a particle swarm optimization (PSO). Basically, we address three main points: the effect of FA and PSO cooperation on the exploration of the search space, the discretization of the two algorithms using a transfer function, and finally, the use of the epsilon dominance relation to manage the size of the external archive and to guarantee the convergence and the diversity of Pareto optimal solutions. We compared the results of our algorithm with the results of five well-known meta-heuristics on nine multi-objective knapsack problem benchmarks. The experiments show clearly the ability of our algorithm to provide a better spread of solutions with a better convergence behavior.
