The interaction of an externally imposed magnetic and electric field on the laminar flow of a conducting fluid in a channel is studied using computational techniques. The Navier-Stokes equations and the equations describing the electromagnetic field are solved simultaneously in a single control volume-type computational fluid dynamic code, in a moderate Hartmann number and interaction parameter regime. The flow considered is two-dimensional, with an imposed magnetic field acting in the third dimension over the central region of the channel and decaying exponentially in the remainder. A pair of electrodes placed at right angles to the magnetic field exercises control over the resultant Lorentz force and hence the velocity profile shape. This configuration has application in direct-current electromagnetic pumps or, conversely, electromagnetic brakes. The initial parabolic flow profile acquires an M-shape / W-shape mode in the magnetic field fringe regions, corresponding to a pump / brake. A novel coupled procedure is described to model magnetohydrodynamic phenomena and is used to explore the effects of the Reynolds number, interaction parameter, and applied voltage on the pump / brake configuration.  相似文献

This paper is a report on a joint project between academia and industry which is concerned with computation of dilute two-phase flow through a pump in turbulent condition. The flow field for the continuous phase is computed using the Reynolds averaged Navier–Stokes equations together with mixing length turbulence modeling. The dispersed phase is treated using the Lagrangian approach by tracking it's trajectory along which the information is passed. It is found that the bubbles and small solid particles flow out of the chamber (between the rotating impeller and the casing wall) with the conveying fluid. The solid particles of relatively bigger sizes accumulate at the low pressure zones near the cashing wall or the rotating shaft.  相似文献

Six turbulence models, including standard kε, kε RNG, kω (88), revised kω (98), Reynolds stress transport model (RSTM), and two-fluid model (TFM), were applied to the simulation of a closed conduit polychromatic UV reactor. Predicted flow field and turbulent kinetic energy were compared with the experimental data from a digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV). All of the predicted flow fields were combined with a multiple segment source summation (MSSS) fluence rate model and three different microbial response kinetic models to simulate the disinfection process at two UV lamp power conditions. Microbial transport was simulated using the Lagrangian particle tracking method. The results show that the fluence distributions and the effluent inactivation levels were sensitive to the turbulence model selection. The level of sensitivity was a function of the operating conditions and the UV response kinetics of the microorganisms. Simulations with operating conditions that produced higher log inactivation or utilized microorganisms with higher UV sensitivity showed greater sensitivity to the turbulence model selection. In addition, a broader fluence distribution was found with turbulence models that predicted a larger wake region behind the lamps.  相似文献

In this paper a novel and simple large-eddy-based lattice Boltzmann model is proposed to simulate two-dimensional turbulence. Unlike existing lattice Boltzmann models for turbulent flow simulation, which were based on primitive-variables Navier–Stokes equations, the target macroscopic equations of the present model are vorticity-streamfunction equations. Thanks to the intrinsic features of vorticity-streamfunction equations, the present model is efficient, stable and simple for two-dimensional turbulence simulation. The advantages of the present model are validated by numerical experiments.  相似文献

A complete analysis of axial piston pump leakage and output flow ripples   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The paper is focused on understanding the flow losses and the resulting flow/pressure dynamics in a piston pump. Initially, equations to evaluate leakages in all piston pump gaps will be presented and tested against numerical models, later the equations will be linked to determine the general pressure/flow pump dynamic characteristics. The model will also provide the temporal pressure in each piston/cylinder chamber and the temporal leakage in all pump clearances. A test rig able to measure the dynamic pressure inside a piston chamber was build and employed to evaluate pressure ripple dynamics as a function of turning speed, outlet pressure and swash plate angle. The comparison between experimental and simulated results is very good, giving confidence to the model presented. The advantage of using the analytical approach is that explicit equations allow a more direct understanding of the effect of dimension changes and operating conditions on pump dynamics. In this article, we present three dimensional CFD study of turbulent vortex flow in an annular passage using OpenFOAM 1.6. The vortex flow is generated by introducing the flow through a tangential entry to the passage. For the analysis presented in this article, turbulence was modeled using the Rε/k − ε model, in addition, a comparison between such model with the standard k − ε model was conducted and discussed. The main characteristics of the flow such as vortex structure and recirculation zone were investigated. It was found that flow is subjected to Rankine vortex structure with three forced vortex regimes and a free vortex region near to the outer wall. The phenomenon of vortex decay was investigated by depicting the swirl number trend along the axial direction of the flow domain. It was found that the vortex decay is subjected to an exponential decay behavior. New coefficients for the exponential decay correlation were derived based on local values of velocity components in different radial planes.  相似文献

A nonlinear stability analysis is performed to study the onset of convection in a fluid saturated porous layer subject to alternating direction of the centrifugal body force. By introducing a suitable energy functional, the analysis is carried out for the Darcy and the Brinkman models of flow through porous media. The nonlinear result is unconditional and its sharpest limit is determined and is compared with the corresponding linear limit. The failure of linear theory in describing the instability is established in a certain region of the parameter space where possible subcritical instabilities may arise. The stability boundaries are discussed graphically for various values of the Darcy number and comparison is made with the available known results.  相似文献

CFD simulation with enhanced modeling of turbulence and near-wall treatment is used to model water–clay mixtures flowing through a cylindrical pipe domain. Effects on the wall-shear stress resulting from varying water clay content and applied hydraulic gradient are analyzed. Various parametric studies were performed and had shown that the two-dimensional modelling introduced in the present study does not yield a uniform wall-shear stress along the pipe wall and that clay concentration affects significantly the wall-shear stress value. This is in contrast with the common hypothesis used in one-dimensional modeling approaches where this stress is assumed constant and which gives rise to uniform erosion along the pipe wall. The obtained results had enabled predicting more realistically erosion amount and had allowed for understanding the irregular eroded hole wall shape as observed experimentally after performing the standard hole erosion test.  相似文献
