We develop a duality theory for spaces of approximable n-homogeneous polynomials on locally convex spaces, generalising results previously obtained for Banach spaces. For E a Fréchet space with its dual having the approximation property and with E b locally Asplund we show that the space of n-homogeneous polynomials on (E b )′ b is the inductive dual of the space of boundedly weakly continuous n-homogeneous polynomials on E. We show that when E is a reflexive Fréchet space, the space of n-homogeneous polynomials on E is reflexive if and only if every n-homogeneous polynomial on E is boundedly weakly continuous. We give a new proof of a recent characterization by Diaz and Mayoral of compactness in the Lebesgue-Bochner spaces LXp, where X is a Banach space and 1≤ p<∞, and extend the result to vector-valued Banach function spaces EX, where E is a Banach function space with order continuous norm. We give a short and direct proof for the computation of the Szlenk index of the C(K) spaces, when K is a countable compact space and determine their Lavrientiev indices. We also compute the Szlenk index of certain C(α) spaces, where α is an uncountable ordinal. Finally, we show that if the Szlenk index of a Banach space is ω (first infinite ordinal), then its weak*-dentability index is at most ω2 and that this estimate is optimal. We derive Banach-Stone theorems for spaces of homogeneous polynomials. We show that every isometric isomorphism between the spaces of homogeneous approximable polynomials on real Banach spaces E and F is induced by an isometric isomorphism of E onto F. With an additional geometric condition we obtain the analogous result in the complex case. Isometries between spaces of homogeneous integral polynomials and between the spaces of all n-homogeneous polynomials are also investigated.  相似文献

Suppose that X and Y are Banach spaces complemented in each other with supplemented subspaces A and B. In 1996, W. T. Gowers solved the Schroeder–Bernstein problem for Banach spaces by showing that X is not necessarily isomorphic to Y. In this paper, we obtain some suitable conditions involving the spaces A and B to yield that X is isomorphic to Y or to provide that at least X m is isomorphic to Yn for some m, n ∈ IN*. So we get some decomposition methods in Banach spaces via supplemented subspaces resembling Pełczyński’s decomposition methods. In order to do this, we introduce several notions of Schroeder–Bernstein Quadruples acting on the spaces X, Y, A and B. Thus, we characterize them by using some Banach spaces recently constructed. We give a characterization of exact sequences of Banach or quasi-Banach spaces having strictly singular quotient map or strictly cosingular embedding. We present two balance principles showing that such sequences can only exist when the sizes of the subspace and the quotient space are not too different.  We prove that in a Banach space admitting a separating polynomial, each weakly null normalized sequence has a subsequence which is equivalent to the usual basis of some , p an even integer. We show that for each even integer p, the Schatten class admits a separating polynomial. For a space with a basis admitting a 4-homogeneous separating polynomial, we relate the unconditionality of the basis with the existence of certain type of polynomials defined in terms of infinite symmetric matrices. We find relations between the properties of the entries of these matrices and the geometrical structure of the space. Finally we study the existence of convex 4-homogeneous separating polynomials. Let X and Y be Banach spaces such that each of them is isomorphic to a complemented subspace of the other. In 1996, W. T. Gowers solved the Schroeder-Bernstein Problem for Banach spaces by showing that X is not necessarily isomorphic to Y. In this paper, we give suitable conditions on finite sums of X and Y to yield that Xm is isomorphic to Yn for some In other words, we obtain some extensions of the well-known Pełczyński decomposition method in Banach spaces. In order to do this, we introduce the notion of Nearly Schroeder-Bernstein Quadruples for Banach spaces and pose a Conjecture to characterise them. Received: 5 January 2005  相似文献

We introduce and investigate the weak metric approximation property of Banach spaces which is strictly stronger than the approximation property and at least formally weaker than the metric approximation property. Among others, we show that if a Banach space has the approximation property and is 1-complemented in its bidual, then it has the weak metric approximation property. We also study the lifting of the weak metric approximation property from Banach spaces to their dual spaces. This enables us, in particular, to show that the subspace of c0, constructed by Johnson and Schechtman, does not have the weak metric approximation property. We prove that a Banach space X is not super-reflexive if and only if the hyperbolic infinite tree embeds metrically into X. We improve one implication of J.Bourgain’s result who gave a metrical characterization of super-reflexivity in Banach spaces in terms of uniform embeddings of the finite trees. A characterization of the linear type for Banach spaces is given using the embedding of the infinite tree equipped with the metrics d p induced by the p norms.  We introduce the class of Orlicz-Pettis polynomials between Banach spaces, defined by their action on weakly unconditionally Cauchy series. We give a number of equivalent definitions, examples and counterexamples which highlight the differences between these polynomials and the corresponding linear operators. We study when a Banach space with absolute norm may have polynomial numerical indices equal to one. In the real case, we show that a Banach space X with absolute norm, which has the Radon-Nikodým property or is Asplund, satisfies n(2)(X)<1 unless it is one-dimensional. In the complex case, we show that the only Banach spaces X with absolute norm and the Radon-Nikodým property which satisfy n(2)(X)=1 are the spaces . Also, the only Asplund complex space X with absolute norm which satisfies n(2)(X)=1 is c0(Λ).  相似文献

Odd Degree Polynomials on Real Banach Spaces   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A classical result of Birch claims that for given k, n integers, n-odd there exists some N = N(k, n) such that for an arbitrary n-homogeneous polynomial P on , there exists a linear subspace of dimension at least k, where the restriction of P is identically zero (we say that Y is a null space for P). Given n > 1 odd, and arbitrary real separable Banach space X (or more generally a space with w*-separable dual X*), we construct an n-homogeneous polynomial P with the property that for every point 0 ≠ xX there exists some k ∈ such that every null space containing x has dimension at most k. In particular, P has no infinite dimensional null space. For a given n odd and a cardinal τ , we obtain a cardinal N = N(τ, n) = expn+1τ such that every n-homogeneous polynomial on a real Banach space X of density N has a null space of density τ . We study universality problems in Banach space theory. We show that if A is an analytic class, in the Effros-Borel structure of subspaces of C([0,1]), of non-universal separable Banach spaces, then there exists a non-universal separable Banach space Y, with a Schauder basis, that contains isomorphs of each member of A with the bounded approximation property. The proof is based on the amalgamation technique of a class C of separable Banach spaces, introduced in the paper. We show, among others, that there exists a separable Banach space R not containing L1(0,1) such that the indices β and rND are unbounded on the set of Baire-1 elements of the ball of the double dual R∗∗ of R. This answers two questions of H.P. Rosenthal. We also introduce the concept of a strongly bounded class of separable Banach spaces. A class C of separable Banach spaces is strongly bounded if for every analytic subset A of C there exists YC that contains all members of A up to isomorphism. We show that several natural classes of separable Banach spaces are strongly bounded, among them the class of non-universal spaces with a Schauder basis, the class of reflexive spaces with a Schauder basis, the class of spaces with a shrinking Schauder basis and the class of spaces with Schauder basis not containing a minimal Banach space X.  相似文献

In this paper we treat the problem of integral representation of analytic functions over the unit ball of a complex Banach space X using the theory of abstract Wiener spaces. We define the class of representable functions on the unit ball of X and prove that this set of functions is related with the classes of integral k–homogeneous polynomials, integral holomorphic functions and also with the set of L p –representable functions on a Banach space.  相似文献

We prove two characterizations of new Cohen summing bilinear operators. The first one is: Let X, Y and Z be Banach spaces, 1 < p < ∞, V : X × Y → Z a bounded linear operator and n ≥ 2 a natural number. Then V is new Cohen p-summing if and only if for all Banach spaces X1,?…?, Xn and all p-summing operators U : X1 × · · · × XnX, the operator V ? (U, IY) : X1 × · · · × Xn × YZ is -summing. The second result is: Let H be a Hilbert space,, Y, Z Banach spaces and V : H × Y → Z a bounded bilinear operator and 1 < p < ∞. Then V is new Cohen p-summing if and only if for all Banach spaces E and all p-summing operators U : EH, the operator V ? (U, IY) is (p, p*)-dominated.  相似文献
