Summary For each in some domainD in the complex plane, letF() be a linear, compact operator on a Banach spaceX and letF be holomorphic in . Assuming that there is a so thatI–F() is not one-to-one, we examine two local methods for approximating the nonlinear eigenvalue . In the Newton method the smallest eigenvalue of the operator pencil [I–F(),F()] is used as increment. We show that under suitable hypotheses the sequence of Newton iterates is locally, quadratically convergent. Second, suppose 0 is an eigenvalue of the operator pencil [I–F(),I] with algebraic multiplicitym. For fixed leth() denote the arithmetic mean of them eigenvalues of the pencil [I–F(),I] which are closest to 0. Thenh is holomorphic in a neighborhood of andh()=0. Under suitable hypotheses the classical Muller's method applied toh converges locally with order approximately 1.84.  相似文献

In this paper the regularity of the Lagrangiansf(x, )=||(x)(1< 1(x)2< +) is studied. Our main result: If(x) is Holder continuous, then the Lagrangianf(x, )=f(x, )=||(x) is regular. Convergence rates of Newton-Goldstein sequences are estimated for convex constrained minimization problems with singular solutions, i.e., solutions at which the local quadratic approximationQ(, x) to the objective functionF grows more slowly than x – 2 for admissible vectorsx near. For a large class of iterative minimization methods with quadratic subproblems, it is shown that the valuesr n =F(x n )–inf F are of orderO(n –1/3) at least. For the Newton—Goldstein method this estimate is sharpened slightly tor n =O(n –1/2) when the second Fréchet differentialF is Lipschitz continuous and the admissible set is bounded. Still sharper estimates are derived when certain growth conditions are satisfied byF or its local linear approximation at. The most surprising conclusion is that Newton—Goldstein sequences can convergesuperlinearly to a singular extremal whenF(), x – Ax – v for someA > 0, somev (2,2.5) and allx in near, and that this growth condition onF() is entirely natural for a nontrivial class of constrained minimization problems on feasible sets = 1{[0,1],U} withU a uniformly convex set in d . Feasible sets of this kind are commonly encountered in the optimal control of continuous-time dynamical systems governed by differential equations, and may be viewed as infinite-dimensional limits of Cartesian product setsU k in kd . In the context of a transient Borel right Markov process with a fixed excessive measure , we characterize the regular strongly supermedian kernels, producing smooth measures by the Revuz correspondence. In the case of the measures charging no -semipolar sets, this is the analytical counterpart of a probabilistic result of Revuz, Fukushima, and Getoor and Fitzsimmons, concerning the positive continuous additive functionals. In the present note a theorem about strong suitability of the space of algebraic polynomials of degree n in C[a,b] (Theorem A in [1]) is generalized to the space of spline polynomials [a, b ]n, k (n2, 0) in C[a, b]. Summary Let ( s ) be a continuous Markov process satisfying certain regularity assumptions. We introduce a path-valued strong Markov process associated with ( s ), which is closely related to the so-called superprocess with spatial motion ( s ). In particular, a subsetH of the state space of ( s ) intersects the range of the superprocess if and only if the set of paths that hitH is not polar for the path-valued process. The latter property can be investigated using the tools of the potential theory of symmetric Markov processes: A set is not polar if and only if it supports a measure of finite energy. The same approach can be applied to study sets that are polar for the graph of the superprocess. In the special case when ( s ) is a diffusion process, we recover certain results recently obtained by Dynkin.  相似文献

Farber developed a Lusternik-Schnirelman theory for finite CW-complexes X and cohomology classes H 1 (X;). This theory has similar properties as the classical Lusternik-Schnirelman theory. In particular in [7] Farber defines a homotopy invariant cat(X,) as a generalization of the Lusternik-Schnirelman category. If X is a closed smooth manifold this invariant relates to the number of zeros of a closed 1-form representing . Namely, a closed 1-form representing which admits a gradient-like vector field with no homoclinic cycles has at least cat(X,) zeros. In this paper we define an invariant F(X,) for closed smooth manifolds X which gives the least number of zeros a closed 1-form representing can have such that it admits a gradient-like vector field without homoclinic cycles and give estimations for this number. Blair [5] has introduced special directions on a contact metric 3-manifolds with negative sectional curvature for plane sections containing the characteristic vector field and, when is Anosov, compared such directions with the Anosov directions. In this paper we introduce the notion of Anosov-like special directions on a contact metric 3-manifold. Such directions exist, on contact metric manifolds with negative -Ricci curvature, if and only if the torsion is -parallel, namely (1.1) is satisfied. If a contact metric 3-manifold M admits Anosov-like special directions, and is -parallel, where is the Berger-Ebin operator, then is Anosov and the universal covering of M is the Lie group (2,R).
