Summary In the paper we consider, from a topological point of view, the set of all continuous functionsf:I I for which the unique continuous solution:I – [0, ) of(f(x)) (x, (x)) and(x, (x)) (f(x)) (x, (x)), respectively, is the zero function. We obtain also some corollaries on the qualitative theory of the functional equation(f(x)) = g(x, (x)). No assumption on the iterative behaviour off is imposed.     

Generalised Holley-Preston inequalities on measure spaces and their products

Summary It is shown that if (X, ) is a product of totally ordered measure spaces andf _j (j=1,2,3,4) are measurable non-negative functions onX satisfyingf ₁(x)f₂(y)f₃(xy)f₄(xy), where (, ) are the lattice operations onX, then (f ₁ d)(f ₂ d)(f ₃ d)(f ₄ d). This generalises results of Ahlswede and Daykin (for counting measure on finite sets) and Preston (for special choices off _j).     

Two-parameter Vilenkin multipliers and a square function

Two-parameter Vilenkin systems will be investigated. First we give a general sufficient condition for multipliers to be bounded between two-dimensional Hardy spaces H ^q(0<q1). By means of interpolation and duality argument, this theorem can be extended to other spaces. As a consequence, we can prove the (H ^q , L ^q)-boundedness of the Sunouchi operator U with respect to two-parameter Vilenkin systems for all 0 <q 1. Moreover, the equivalence f{H_q} ~ Uf_q (f H^q)follows for 1/2<q 1.

Let be a Guelfand measure (cf. [A, B]) on a locally compact groupG DenoteL ₁ (G)=*L ₁(G)* the commutative Banach algebra associated to . We show thatL ₁ (G) is semi-simple and give a characterization of the closed ideals ofL ₁ (G). Using the -spherical Fourier transform, we characterize all linear bounded operators inL ₁ (G) which are invariants by -translations (i.e. such that ¹(( _x f) )=( _x ((f)) for eachxG andfL ₁ (G); where _x f(y)=f(xy); x,y G). WhenG is compact, we study the algebraL ₁ (G) and obtain results analogous to ones obtained for the commutative case: we show thatL ₁ (G) is regular, all closed sets of its Guelfand spectrum are sets of synthesis and establish theorems of harmonic synthesis for functions inL _p (G) (p=1,2 or +).

     

On the Growth of the Maximum of the Modulus of an Entire Function on a Sequence

Let M _f(r) and _f(r) be, respectively, the maximum of the modulus and the maximum term of an entire function f and let be a continuously differentiable function convex on (–, +) and such that x = o((x)) as x +. Quelques observations concernant les ensembles de Ditkin d'un groupe localement compact

We prove that every closed normal subgroupH of a locally compact amenable groupG is a Ditkin set with respect to the Herz-Figà-Talamanca algebraA _p (G) (p>1). Let be the canonical map ofG ontoG/H andF a closed subset ofG/H. We show thatF is a Ditkin set if and only if everyuA _p (G), which vanishes on ^–1, lies on the norm closure of the subspace ofA _p (G) generated by {u _h |hH, vA _p (G)C ₀₀(G)} whereu _h (x)=u(x h). As far as we know, this result seems to be new even forG abelian andp=2.     

Packing circuits in eulerian digraphs

LetG be an eulerian digraph; let (G) be the maximum number of pairwise edge-disjoint directed circuits ofG, and (G) the smallest size of a set of edges that meets all directed circuits ofG. Borobia, Nutov and Penn showed that (G) need not be equal to (G). We show that (G)=(G) provided thatG has a linkless embedding in 3-space, or equivalently, if no minor ofG can be converted toK ₆ by –Y andY– operations.
