On an approximate automorphism on a -algebra

It is shown that for an approximate algebra homomorphism on a Banach -algebra , there exists a unique algebra -homomorphism near the approximate algebra homomorphism. This is applied to show that for an approximate automorphism on a unital -algebra , there exists a unique automorphism near the approximate automorphism. In fact, we show that the approximate automorphism is an automorphism.

     

A concrete description of -spaces as -spaces and its applications

We prove that for a compact Hausdorff space without isolated points, and are isometrically Riesz isomorphic spaces under a certain topology on . Moreover, is a closed subspace of . This provides concrete examples of compact Hausdorff spaces such that the Dedekind completion of is (= the set of all bounded real-valued functions on ) since the Dedekind completion of is ( and spaces as Banach lattices).

     

(APD)-property of -algebras by extensions of -algebras with (APD)

A unital -algebra is said to have the (APD)-property if every nonzero element in has the approximate polar decomposition. Let be a closed ideal of . Suppose that and have (APD). In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that makes have (APD). Furthermore, we show that if and or is a simple purely infinite -algebra, then has (APD).

     

Discrete spectra of -algebras and complemented submodules in Hilbert -modules

Let be a -algebra and let be a full (right) Hilbert -module. It is shown that if the spectrum of is discrete, then every closed --submodule of is complemented in , and conversely that if is a -space and if every closed --submodule of is complemented in , then is discrete.

     

Global properties of the lattice of classes

Let be the lattice of classes of reals. We show there are exactly two possible isomorphism types of end intervals, . Moreover, finiteness is first order definable in .

     

Real rank and squaring mappings for unital -algebras

It is proved that if is a compact Hausdorff space of Lebesgue dimension , then the squaring mapping , defined by , is open if and only if . Hence the Lebesgue dimension of can be detected from openness of the squaring maps . In the case it is proved that the map , from the selfadjoint elements of a unital -algebra into its positive elements, is open if and only if is isomorphic to for some compact Hausdorff space with .

     

Extending into isometries of

In this paper we generalize a result of Hopenwasser and Plastiras (1997) that gives a geometric condition under which into isometries from to have a unique extension to an isometry in . We show that when and are separable reflexive Banach spaces having the metric approximation property with strictly convex and smooth and such that is a Hahn-Banach smooth subspace of , any nice into isometry has a unique extension to an isometry in .

     

Characterizations of elements with compact support in the dual spaces of -modules of

For a locally compact group and , let be the Figà-Talamanca-Herz algebra and let be its dual Banach space. For a Banach -module of , we denote the norm closure of the subspace of the elements in with compact support by . We prove that an element of is in if and only if for any 0$">, there exists a compact subset of such that for all with and . In particular, we have that an element of is in if and only if for any 0$">, there exists a compact subset of such that for all with . If has an orthogonal complement in , we characterize by the following condition: is in if and only if for any 0$"> and any compact subset of , there exists some with and such that \Vert u\Vert - \epsilon $">. Some results of Flory (1971) and Miao (1999) can be obtained from our main theorems by taking and as some -subalgebras of .

     

Vector measure Banach spaces containing a complemented copy of

Let a Banach space and a -algebra of subsets of a set . We say that a vector measure Banach space has the bounded Vitaly-Hahn-Sacks Property if it satisfies the following condition: Every vector measure , for which there exists a bounded sequence in verifying for all , must belong to . Among other results, we prove that, if is a vector measure Banach space with the bounded V-H-S Property and containing a complemented copy of , then contains a copy of .

     

Critical exponents of discrete groups and -spectrum

Let be a noncompact semisimple Lie group and an arbitrary discrete, torsion-free subgroup of . Let be the bottom of the spectrum of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on the locally symmetric space , and let be the exponent of growth of . If has rank , then these quantities are related by a well-known formula due to Elstrodt, Patterson, Sullivan and Corlette. In this note we generalize that relation to the higher rank case by estimating from above and below by quadratic polynomials in . As an application we prove a rigiditiy property of lattices.

     

Polynomial approximation on real-analytic varieties in

We prove: Let be a compact real-analytic variety in . Assume (i) is polynomially convex and (ii) every point of is a peak point for . Then . This generalizes a previous result of the authors on polynomial approximation on three-dimensional real-analytic submanifolds of .

     

A characterization of discrete groups

Spectra of operators with Bishop's property

Let be a Banach space and let be the class that consists of all operators such that for every , the range of has a finite-codimension when it is closed. For an integer , we define the class as an extension of . We then study spectral properties of such operators, and we extend some known results of multi-cyclic operators with .

     

The Russo-Dye Theorem in a weakly closed -module

Suppose that is admissible. It is shown that the convex hull of unitary elements of a weakly closed -module contains the whole unit ball of if and only if and for any 0$">, 0$">.

     

Minimal polynomials of elements of order in -modular projective representations of alternating groups

On the invariance of classes under composition

The necessary and sufficient condition for to be in the class for every of that class whose range is in the domain of is that be in .

     

Automatic continuity of -derivations on -algebras

Let be a -algebra acting on a Hilbert space , let be a linear mapping and let be a -derivation. Generalizing the celebrated theorem of Sakai, we prove that if is a continuous -mapping, then is automatically continuous. In addition, we show the converse is true in the sense that if is a continuous --derivation, then there exists a continuous linear mapping such that is a --derivation. The continuity of the so-called - -derivations is also discussed.

     

On mixing and completely mixing properties of positive -contractions of finite von Neumann algebras

Akcoglu and Suchaston proved the following result: Let be a positive contraction. Assume that for the sequence converges weakly in . Then either or there exists a positive function , such that . In the paper we prove an extension of this result in a finite von Neumann algebra setting, and as a consequence we obtain that if a positive contraction of a noncommutative -space has no nonzero positive invariant element, then its mixing property implies the completely mixing property.

-additive families and the invariance of Borel classes

We prove that any -additive family of sets in an absolutely Souslin metric space has a -discrete refinement provided every partial selector set for is -discrete. As a corollary we obtain that every mapping of a metric space onto an absolutely Souslin metric space, which maps -sets to -sets and has complete fibers, admits a section of the first class. The invariance of Borel and Souslin sets under mappings with complete fibers, which preserves -sets, is shown as an application of the previous result.
