An automorphism of a finite group G whose restriction to any Sylow subgroup equals the restriction of some inner automorphism of G shall be called Coleman automorphism, named for D. B. Coleman, who's important observation from [2] especially shows that such automorphisms occur naturally in the study of the normalizer of G in the units of the integral group . Let Out be the image of these automorphisms in Out. We prove that Out is always an abelian group (based on previous work of E. C. Dade, who showed that Out is always nilpotent). We prove that if no composition factor of G has order p (a fixed prime), then Out is a -group. If O, it suffices to assume that no chief factor of G has order p. If G is solvable and no chief factor of has order 2, then , where is the center of . This improves an earlier result of S. Jackowski and Z. Marciniak. Let G be a finite group and let N be a nilpotent normal subgroup of G such that G/N is cyclic. It is shown that under some conditions all Coleman automorphisms of G are inner. Interest in such automorphisms arose from the study of the normalizer problem for integral group rings.  相似文献

We continue a study of automorphisms of order 2 of algebraic groups. In particular we look at groups of type G2 over fields k of characteristic two. Let C be an octonion algebra over k; then Aut(C) is a group of type G2 over k. We characterize automorphisms of order 2 and their corresponding fixed point groups for Aut(C) by establishing a connection between the structure of certain four dimensional subalgebras of C and the elements in Aut(C) that induce inner automorphisms of order 2. These automorphisms relate to certain quadratic forms which, in turn, determine the Galois cohomology of the fixed point groups of the involutions. The characteristic two case is unique because of the existence of four dimensional totally singular subalgebras. Over finite fields we show how our results coincide with known results, and we establish a classification of automorphisms of order 2 over infinite fields of characteristic two.  相似文献

In this paper one of our questions is the following: Which finite abelian groups are (are not) isomorphic to inner mapping groups of loops? It is well known that if the inner mapping group of a finite loop Q is abelian, then Q is centrally nilpotent. The other question is: Which properties of abelian inner mapping groups imply the central nilpotency of class at most two of the loop? After reminding the reader of the known results we show new ones. To solve these problems we transform them into group theoretical problems, then using connected transversals we get some answer. It has been shown in an earlier paper [G. Navarro, Pham Huu Tiep, Rational Brauer characters, Math. Ann. 335 (2006) 675-686] that, for any odd prime p, every finite group of even order has a non-trivial rational-valued irreducible p-Brauer character. For p=2 this statement is no longer true. In this paper we determine the possible non-abelian composition factors of finite groups without non-trivial rational-valued irreducible 2-Brauer characters. We also prove that, if pq are primes, then any finite group of order divisible by q has a non-trivial irreducible p-Brauer character with values in the cyclotomic field Q(exp(2πi/q)).  相似文献

We investigate the separation of characters by blocks at different primes and the inclusions of q-blocks in p-blocks (viewed as sets of characters), and use these notions to prove results on the structure of the corresponding groups. In particular, we provide a new criterion for the nilpotence of a finite group G based on the separation by principal blocks, and we show that a condition on block unions has strong structural consequences.  相似文献

In this paper, we prove that every element of the linear group GL14(R) normalizing the Chevalley group of type G 2 over a commutative local ring R without 1/2 belongs to this group up to some multiplier. This allows us to improve our classification of automorphisms of these Chevalley groups showing that an automorphism-conjugation can be replaced by an inner automorphism. Therefore, it is proved that every automorphism of a Chevalley group of type G 2 over a local ring without 1/2 is a composition of a ring and an inner automorphisms.  相似文献

In representation theory of finite groups, there is a well-known and important conjecture due to M. Broué. He conjectures that, for any prime p, if a p-block A of a finite group G has an abelian defect group D, then A and its Brauer correspondent p-block B of NG(D) are derived equivalent. We demonstrate in this paper that Broué's conjecture holds for two non-principal 3-blocks A with elementary abelian defect group D of order 9 of the O'Nan simple group and the Higman-Sims simple group. Moreover, we determine these two non-principal block algebras over a splitting field of characteristic 3 up to Morita equivalence.  相似文献

Imitating the Lubin's philosophy on nonarchimedean dynamical systems, we prove that every finite family of inversibles series of Fq[[X]] which commute for the law ○ is connected with a finite family of automorphisms of a formal group over Fq. In some cases these formal groups are reduction on Fq of Lubin-Tate formal groups over finite extensions of Qp.  相似文献

Let G be a finite group and k be a field of characteristic p. We show how to glue Rickard idempotent modules for a pair of open subsets of the cohomology variety along an automorphism for their intersection. The result is an endotrivial module. An interesting aspect of the construction is that we end up constructing finite dimensional endotrivial modules using infinite dimensional Rickard idempotent modules. We prove that this construction produces a subgroup of finite index in the group of endotrivial modules. More generally, we also show how to glue any pair of kG-modules.  相似文献

Permutation groups of prime power degree are investigated here through the study of the corresponding group algebra of the set of all functions from the underlying set on which the permutation group acts to a finite field of characteristic p. For the case when the permutation group is of degree p2 acting on a set consisting of the direct product of two elementary abelian p-groups, the structure of a minimal permutation module is obtained under certain conditions. The proofs do not depend on the recent classification results of finite simple groups.  相似文献

We describe the asymptotic behavior of automorphisms of totally disconnected locally compact groups in terms of a set of `directions' which comes equipped with a natural pseudo-metric. The structure at infinity obtained by completing the induced metric quotient space of the set of directions recovers familiar objects such as: the set of ends of the tree for the group of inner automorphisms of the group of isometries of a regular locally finite tree; and the spherical Bruhat-Tits building for the group of inner automorphisms of the set of rational points of a semisimple group over a local field. We prove that the isomorphism problem for finitely generated fully residually free groups (or F-groups for short) is decidable. We also show that each F-group G has a decomposition that is invariant under automorphisms of G, and obtain a structure theorem for the group of outer automorphisms .  相似文献

A group G is an A-E group if the endomorphism nearring of G generated by its automorphisms equals the endomorphism nearring generated by its endomorphisms. In this paper we set out to determine those p-groups G that are semidirect products of cyclic groups and are A-E groups. We show that no such groups exist when p = 2. When p is odd, we show that G is an A-E group whenever the nilpotency class of G is less than p. Examples are given to show no conclusion can be drawn when the nilpotency class is greater than or equal to p.  相似文献

An automorphism α of a group G is said to be central if α commutes with every inner automorphism of G. We construct a family of non-special finite p-groups having abelian automorphism groups. These groups provide counterexamples to a conjecture of A. Mahalanobis [Israel J. Math. 165 (2008), 161–187]. We also construct a family of finite p-groups having non-abelian automorphism groups and all automorphisms central. This solves a problem of I. Malinowska [Advances in Group Theory, Aracne Editrice, Rome, 2002, pp. 111–127].  相似文献

The famous theorem of Belyi states that the compact Riemann surface X can be defined over the number field if and only if X can be uniformized by a finite index subgroup Γ of a Fuchsian triangle group Λ. As a result such surfaces are now called Belyi surfaces. The groups PSL(2,q),q=p n are known to act as the groups of automorphisms on such surfaces. Certain aspects of such actions have been extensively studied in the literature. In this paper, we deal with symmetries. Singerman showed, using acertain result of Macbeath, that such surfaces admit a symmetry which we shall call in this paper the Macbeath-Singerman symmetry. A classical theorem by Harnack states that the set of fixed points of a symmetry of a Riemann surface X of genus g consists of k disjoint Jordan curves called ovals for some k ranging between 0 and g+1. In this paper we show that given an odd prime p, a Macbetah-Singerman symmetry of Belyi surface with PSL(2,p) as a group of automorphisms has at most  相似文献

In this paper we study the probability that the commutator of two randomly chosen elements in a finite group is equal to a given element of that group. Explicit computations are obtained for groups G which |G| is prime and GZ(G) as well as for groups G which |G| is prime and GZ(G)=1. This paper extends results of Rusin [see D.J. Rusin, What is the probability that two elements of a finite group commute? Pacific J. Math. 82 (1) (1979) 237-247].  相似文献

We shall show that mod p cohomology algebras of finite groups have systems of parameters with certain properties. Using this result, we can show that for a finite group G of p-rank at most three, the trivial kG-module k, where k is a field of characteristic p, has index zero. The index of kG-modules was introduced by J. F. Carlson in 1990 at the symposium Representations of algebras and related topics (Tsukuba).Received: 15 January 2001  相似文献

We give a sufficient condition on a finite p-group G of nilpotency class 2 so that Aut c (G) = Inn(G), where Aut c (G) and Inn(G) denote the group of all class preserving automorphisms and inner automorphisms of G respectively. Next we prove that if G and H are two isoclinic finite groups (in the sense of P. Hall), then Aut c (G) ≃ Aut c (H). Finally we study class preserving automorphisms of groups of order p 5, p an odd prime and prove that Aut c (G) = Inn(G) for all the groups G of order p 5 except two isoclinism families.  相似文献
