Meaningful and effective training and professional development programs for teachers are key to the improvement of teaching practices in our schools. In this paper, the authors offer a meta‐synthesis of the literature on the role of reflection for mathematics and science teachers within the context of professional development. The authors frame this review using Desimone's core components of professional development, a research‐based framework emphasizing components tied to positive outcomes (content focus, active learning, coherence, duration, and collective participation). A synthesis of literature in this area shows that few training and professional development programs include all five components of Desimone's core conceptual framework for effective professional development linked to positive outcomes. Further, the authors find in their review that increased contact hours included in a professional development program produce an increase in frequency, duration, and depth of reflective practice for teachers.  相似文献

Alternative pathways to teaching licensure were developed to address teacher shortages. These programs differ widely, making it difficult to generalize the effects. This study compares the impact of two alternative licensure programs on the development of fundamental elements of science teacher preparation and persistence. The fast‐track programs include a 6‐month teacher preparation program and a one‐year residency teacher preparation program. The study concluded that licensure type was unassociated with the impact on teaching self‐efficacy, beliefs about teacher‐focused/student‐focused teaching, preferences for inquiry instructional practices, and experiences with student misbehavior. However, the study revealed that licensure type was associated with a number of other variables: residency students had more confidence in their ability to provide quality instruction; preferred inquiry‐based instruction more often; and may be better prepared for the high‐needs classroom. Those in the 6‐month program were more likely to score higher on practical versus theoretical approaches to teaching, and while they had a more realistic idea of how to measure success in the high‐needs classroom, the residency students had more knowledge of educational theory and how to apply it. Findings suggest that more traditionally licensed teachers may be more inclined to use inquiry‐based methods suggested in current reforms.  相似文献

Over the past 5 years, integrated science and mathematics professional development programs for grades 4‐10 science and mathematics teachers have been designed and implemented at Wright State University. The primary goals of the programs were to enhance the science and mathematics content understanding and pedagogical knowledge of the participant teachers in order to increase teacher confidence and promote the implementation of standards‐based teaching practices in precollege classrooms. In this article, the general program structure developed and implemented over the years is discussed. Focusing on the 1999 program, evidence is presented of enhanced participant content understanding and pedagogical preparation, and specific examples of modified teacher practices are discussed.  相似文献

This longitudinal, five‐year study of teachers and students who had participated in a systemic reform program in science explored if (1) teacher change in practice realized during a three‐year program is sustained one, two, and three years following the program, (2) student performance on state science assessments two years following studying with teachers at this school still demonstrated significant differences from students who attended the control school, and (3) student performance continued to be enhanced for both White and Minority students. Student achievement was assessed using the Discovery Inquiry Test in Science during sixth through eighth grades and the Ohio Graduation Test was used in 10th grade. The same students completed the test in grades 6–8 and 10th grade. Students from the Program school significantly outperformed students who attended the control school on the 10th grade state assessment in science. Findings in this study revealed the ability for sustained, whole‐school, professional development programs to have a cumulative and residual impact on teacher change and student learning of science.  相似文献

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of a primary teacher education program in improving science teaching efficacy beliefs (personal science teaching efficacy beliefs and outcome expectancy beliefs) of preservice primary school teachers. The study also investigated whether the program has an effect on student teachers' attitudes toward science. Data were collected by administering the “Science Teaching Efficacy Beliefs Instrument” and “Attitudes toward Science Scale” to 282 preservice primary teachers (147 freshmen, 135 seniors). Statistical techniques such as means and t‐test were used to analyze the data. Results of the study showed that the primary teacher education program has a medium positive effect on science teaching efficacy beliefs of the primary preservice teachers (t = 4.791, p = .000) and that there were no gender differences in terms of efficacy beliefs. Results also indicated that preservice primary teachers' attitudes toward science were moderately positive and differ by class level. Fourth‐year preservice teachers' attitudes toward science were found to be significantly more positive than the first years (t = 5.494, p = .000). There were no gender differences in attitudes toward science.  相似文献

This paper deals with the sustainable effectiveness of professional development programmes. Based on a review of literature and research findings, the following questions are raised: What is regarded as an effective way of promoting mathematics teachers’ sustainable professional development? Which levels of impacts are aimed at? What are the factors promoting the effectiveness of professional development programmes? Regarding these questions, the article links theoretical considerations with research findings from a case study. A secondary mathematics teacher, taking part in a teacher professional development programme in 2002, was revisited in 2005 and 2010 to gather data regarding the sustainable impact of the programme. The case study’s results provide information about the teacher’s professional growth and lead to a discussion of implications for mathematics teachers’ professional development and teacher education in general.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of participation in a federally sponsored, short‐term, cocurricular, mathematics and science program (Science Engineering Mathematics Aerospace Academy, SEMAA) on the engagement rates of sixth‐ and seventh‐grade students in public school mathematics classes. Engagement was measured with the Student Record of Behavior at three time intervals. Results of a 22.3 ANOVA investigating three main effects (participation, level of access to technology, and time) and their primary and secondary interactions reflected no discernable impact of the SEMAA program on student engagement rates. Ancillary programs designed to compensate for deficiencies in daily instructional programs may represent engagement opportunities vastly different from the daily instructional programs they support. Consequently, ancillary programs may not impact engagement in regular classrooms and subsequently improve achievement outcomes, especially when implemented in low‐performing schools and high‐stakes accountability settings. Recommendations include alignment of ancillary programs with the daily instructional programs they support and with ongoing professional development activities and that further study include broadened samples, settings, and variables.  相似文献

The purpose of this study is to provide an in‐depth analysis of attitudes and perceptions related to the integration of mathematics, science, and technology education of preservice teachers preparing to teach STEM disciplines. Longitudinal data by individual cohort and across 7 years of the Integrated Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MSAT) Program are reported, analyzed, and interpreted to help design and improve preservice teacher education programs and improve teaching and learning in STEM classrooms. Results of quantitative analyses indicate that there was generally no change in preservice teacher attitudes and perceptions related to the value of the integration of mathematics, science, and technology education—they clearly valued integration at the onset and at the completion of the program. However, there was a significant change in preservice teacher attitudes and perceptions related to integration feasibility in terms of inefficiency and difficulty. Implications for teacher education programs include: (a) more exposure to concepts, processes, and skills in STEM that are similar, analogous, complementary, or synergistic; (b) familiarity with instructional strategies and access to resources; (c) deeper understanding of content across STEM; and (d) strategies for collaboration and team work to make integrated instruction time more efficient and less difficult to manage.  相似文献

So-called “bottom-up” strategies for implementation based on mathematics teachers' own developmental activities are considered to be a powerful approach when encouraging teachers to introduce alternative instructional practices. For evaluational research of in-service teacher training programs using “bottom-up” implementation strategies, the way how teachers implement contents of the teacher training is at the centre of interest. As the teachers' active role in the implementation process is necessary, their individual beliefs on the contents of the teacher training and their expectancies might influence the teachers' implementational activities. These beliefs can be considered as components of professional knowledge and pedagogical contents knowledge (Shulman, 1986) in particular. For this reason, the study focuses on the development of beliefs on contents of a teacher training program throughout the training on the one hand and relationships with characteristics of implementation on the other hand. We consider the example of introducing a student-centred learning environment, the so-called topic study method, in the teachers' classrooms. The results indicate that there are interdependencies between beliefs on the teacher training contents and characteristics of implementation.  相似文献

This study used reflective practitioner methodology to investigate how to improve the quality of statistical education. During the study, this methodology, curricula, pedagogical practices, assessment and a framework for learning to learn statistics were all developed as means of improving the quality of statistical education. Also documented was the move from being a classroom teacher of statistics to a teacher who is developing learning resources for online delivery to students. For a classroom teacher, flexible delivery has meant drawing on the sights, sounds, movement, quiet and live shows. By contrast, the online teacher feels the constraints of translating activity based programs to technologically based programs. As more students have chosen to rely on online materials rather than classroom activities, the focus of improving quality has been extended to the enrichment of online resources, so that the learning experience is not second to that of the classroom.  相似文献

This paper deals with a crucial topic: which factors influence the sustainability and scale-up of a professional development programme’s impact? Theoretical models and empirical findings from impact research (e.g. Zehetmeier and Krainer, ZDM Int J Math 43(6/7):875–887, 2011) and innovation research (e.g. Cobb and Smith, International handbook of mathematics teacher education, vol 3, pp 231–254, Sense Publishers, Rotterdam, 2008; Rogers, Diffusion of innovations, Free Press, New York, 2003) are combined in order to be used as a theoretical framework for a qualitative impact analysis of a mathematics teacher professional development programme in Austria. The paper provides data from document analyses and interview series to describe as well as explain this programme’s various impacts on different levels within a case study setting. In particular, this study focuses on factors (e.g. networks, shared vision or mutual accountability) which are influencing the scale-up and sustainability of a professional development programme’s impact (e.g. on teachers’ knowledge, beliefs or practice). Finally, implications for upcoming professional development programmes are discussed.  相似文献

This article presents the findings from a study of a mentoring program for novice mathematics and science teachers, which was provided by their teacher education program. This study reports the findings of interviews with novice math and science teachers, their mentors, and the mentoring program administrators to explore stakeholder perceptions of mentoring support. Findings suggest the importance of using multiple mentoring strategies to develop, support, and retain high‐quality math and science teachers in the teaching profession. This study contributes to what is known about the role that teacher education programs may play in mentoring novice math and science teachers who have graduated from their programs.  相似文献

This study investigated and evaluated the potential impact of an elementary mathematics methods course in promoting teacher beliefs and attitudes that are consistent with the underlying philosophy of current reform efforts in mathematics education. Using the Mathematics Beliefs Instrument (MBI; Hart, 2002 ), data from 89 preservice teachers were used to evaluate the course. Findings from the study suggest a positive relationship between participating in the mathematics methods course and change in teacher beliefs and attitudes. This study also provided additional validation of the MBI.  相似文献

This study investigated the impact of incorporating problem posing in elementary classrooms on the beliefs held by elementary teachers about mathematics and mathematics teaching. Teachers participated in a year‐long staff development project aimed at facilitating the incorporation of problem posing into their classrooms. Beliefs were examined via pre‐ and postsurvey. Results indicated a positive impact on their beliefs about mathematics and mathematics instruction. Data from open‐ended written responses verified the impact of problem posing on the teachers and their classrooms. Based on these findings, it is recommended that problem posing be incorporated into all professional learning and undergraduate education programs.  相似文献

Young children are capable of engaging in STEM investigations when they are guided by skilled and knowledgeable teachers. However, many elementary teachers may lack sufficient STEM content knowledge and report feeling unprepared to teach STEM content. Two university faculty members in mathematics and science education, worked to cultivate and advance two designated Elementary STEM‐Focused professional development schools through a two year series of an after‐school STEM professional development (PD) Program. As the STEM PD Program progressed, it became evident that teachers were interested in and needed more experiences with the elements of the engineering process for young learners. With this in mind, several of the PD sessions were designed to highlight the engineering process and allow teachers to experience various activities that would engage young learners. To examine how this focus on the engineering process impacted the teachers in this STEM PD Program, a research study was organized during year two of the STEM PD Program. The results of this study provide evidence that this program had a positive influence on the teacher participants’ engineering teacher efficacy and implementation of engineering lessons and activities within their classrooms.  相似文献

The authors evaluate the Science-Technology-Society (STS) views, attitudes and literacy of Israeli elementary science school teachers in three in-depth, longitudinal inservice programs. The programs were aimed at promoting teacher empowerment for the implementation, on a national scale, of a new STS-oriented elementary science curriculum reform. By using a blend of qualitative and quantitative research methods, the effectiveness of these similar but not identical programs has been determined. It was found that appropriately designed inservice science teacher training courses did induce a shift in the STS views/positions, beliefs/attitudes and literacy of elementary science teachers, and that this shift can be increased by using research-based data, obtained within an ongoing formative education process.  相似文献

With the increasing emphasis on integrating engineering into K‐12 classrooms to help meet the needs of our complex and multidisciplinary society, there is an urgent need to investigate teachers' engineering‐focused professional development experiences as they relate to teacher learning, implementation, and student achievement. This study addresses this need by examining the effects of a professional development program focused on engineering integration, and how teachers chose to implement engineering in their classrooms as a result of the professional development. 198 teachers in grades 3–6 from 43 schools in 17 districts participated in a yearlong professional development program designed to help integrate the new state science standards, with a focus on engineering, into their teaching. Posters including lesson plans and student artifacts were used to assess teachers' engineering practices and the implementation in their classrooms. Results indicated that the majority of the teachers who participated in the professional development were able to effectively implement engineering design lessons in their classrooms suggesting that the teachers' success in implementing engineering lessons in their classroom was closely related to the structure of the professional development program.  相似文献

The Indiana Science Initiative (ISI) is a systemic effort to reform K–8 science education. The program provides teachers with professional development, reform‐oriented science modules, and materials support. To examine the impact of the initiative's professional development, a participant observation study was conducted in the program's pilot year. Five teachers in grades 3–6 were observed and interviewed as they implemented the ISI‐provided modules. Analysis of the observation data revealed that the teachers incorporated each of the features of inquiry science instruction. However, they did not consistently teach in a way that was aligned with the intent of the ISI. Examination of interview data provided insight into influences on teachers' use of inquiry with the ISI‐provided modules. These data revealed that teachers were aware of the intent of the ISI and attempted to align their instruction. However, teachers were influenced by their perceptions of students' behavior and abilities as well as timing and the appropriate level of teacher control needed to facilitate science instruction. The research suggests that professional development activities should prepare teachers to help learners evaluate explanations against alternatives, connect explanations to scientific knowledge, and provide strategies to address teachers' perceptions of students, timing, and teacher control.  相似文献
