Weak properties of weighted convolution algebras

Suppose that is a weighted convolution algebra on with the weight normalized so that the corresponding space of measures is the dual space of the space of continuous functions. Suppose that is a continuous nonzero homomorphism, where is also a convolution algebra. If is norm dense in , we show that is (relatively) weak dense in , and we identify the norm closure of with the convergence set for a particular semigroup. When is weak continuous it is enough for to be weak dense in . We also give sufficient conditions and characterizations of weak continuity of . In addition, we show that, for all nonzero in , the sequence converges weak to 0. When is regulated, converges to 0 in norm.

     

Double covering of curves

Let be a smooth projective algebraic curve of genus and an integer with . For all integers we prove the existence of a double covering with a smooth curve of genus and the existence of a degree morphism that does not factor through . By the Castelnuovo-Severi inequality, the result is sharp (except perhaps the bound ).

     

On the norm of an idempotent Schur multiplier on the Schatten class

We show that if the norm of an idempotent Schur multiplier on the Schatten class lies sufficiently close to , then it is necessarily equal to . We also give a simple characterization of those idempotent Schur multipliers on whose norm is .

     

On the projective-injective modules over cellular algebras

We show that the projective module over a cellular algebra is injective if and only if the socle of coincides with the top of , and this is also equivalent to the condition that the th socle layer of is isomorphic to the th radical layer of for each positive integer . This eases the process of determining the Loewy series of the projective-injective modules over cellular algebras.

     

Pseudocompact spaces and -spaces

Let be a completely regular Hausdorff space, and let be the space of continuous real-valued functions on endowed with the compact-open topology. We find various equivalent conditions for to be a -space, resolving an old question of Jarchow and consolidating work by Jarchow, Mazon, McCoy and Todd. Included are analytic characterizations of pseudocompactness and an example that shows that, for , Grothendieck's -spaces do not coincide with Jarchow's -spaces. Any such example necessarily answers a thirty-year-old question on weak barrelledness properties for , our original motivation.

     

On -supplemented maximal and minimal subgroups of Sylow subgroups of finite groups

This paper proves: Let be a saturated formation containing . Suppose that is a group with a normal subgroup such that .

(1) If all maximal subgroups of any Sylow subgroup of are -supple- mented in , then ;

(2) If all minimal subgroups and all cyclic subgroups with order 4 of are -supplemented in , then .

     

The number of Hall -subgroups of a -separable group

We observe a simple formula to compute the number of Hall -subgroups of a -separable finite group in terms of only the action of a fixed Hall -subgroup of on a set of normal -sections of . As a consequence, we obtain that divides whenever is a subgroup of a finite -separable group . This generalizes a recent result of Navarro. In addition, our method gives an alternative proof of Navarro's result.

     

A note on commutativity up to a factor of bounded operators

In this note, we explore commutativity up to a factor for bounded operators and in a complex Hilbert space. Conditions on possible values of the factor are formulated and shown to depend on spectral properties of the operators. Commutativity up to a unitary factor is considered. In some cases, we obtain some properties of the solution space of the operator equation and explore the structures of and that satisfy for some A quantum effect is an operator on a complex Hilbert space that satisfies The sequential product of quantum effects and is defined by We also obtain properties of the sequential product.

     

The Poincaré polynomial of an mp arrangement

Let be an mp arrangement in a complex algebraic variety with corresponding complement and intersection poset . Examples of such arrangements are hyperplane arrangements and toral arrangements, i.e., collections of codimension 1 subtori, in an algebraic torus. Suppose a finite group acts on as a group of automorphisms and stabilizes the arrangement setwise. We give a formula for the graded character of on the cohomology of in terms of the graded character of on the cohomology of certain subvarieties in .

     

On two problems of Erdos and Hechler: New methods in singular madness

For an infinite cardinal , denotes the set of all cardinalities of nontrivial maximal almost disjoint families over .

Erdos and Hechler proved in 1973 the consistency of for a singular cardinal and asked if it was ever possible for a singular that , and also whether for every singular cardinal .

We introduce a new method for controlling for a singular and, among other new results about the structure of for singular , settle both problems affirmatively.

     

Base-cover paracompactness

Call a topological space base-cover paracompact if has an open base such that every cover of contains a locally finite subcover. A subspace of the Sorgenfrey line is base-cover paracompact if and only if it is . The countable sequential fan is not base-cover paracompact. A paracompact space is locally compact if and only if its product with every compact space is base-cover paracompact.

     

Transference for amenable actions

Suppose acts amenably on a measure space with quasi-invariant -finite measure . Let be an isometric representation of on and a finite Radon measure on . We show that the operator has -operator norm not exceeding the -operator norm of the convolution operator defined by . We shall also prove an analogous result for the maximal function associated to a countable family of Radon measures .

     

The complexity of the word-problem for finite matrix rings

We analyze the so-called word-problem for , the ring of matrices over . We prove that the term-equivalence problem for the semigroup (and so for the ring) is coNP-complete.

     

Pure Picard-Vessiot extensions with generic properties

Given a connected linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0, we construct a pure Picard-Vessiot extension for , namely, a Picard-Vessiot extension , with differential Galois group , such that and are purely differentially transcendental over . The differential field is the quotient field of a -stable proper differential subring with the property that if is any differential field with field of constants and is a Picard-Vessiot extension with differential Galois group a connected subgroup of , then there is a differential homomorphism such that is generated over as a differential field by .

     

Instability of statistical factor analysis

Factor analysis, a popular method for interpreting multivariate data, models the covariance among variables as being due to a small number (, ) of hidden variables. A factor analysis of can be thought of as an ordered or unordered collection, , of linearly independent lines in . Let be the collection of data sets for which is defined. The ``singularities' of are those data sets, , in the closure, , at which the limit, , does not exist. is unstable near its singularities.

-adic -basis and regular local ring

We introduce the concept of -adic -basis as an extension of the concept of -basis. Let be a regular local ring of prime characteristic and a ring such that . Then we prove that is a regular local ring if and only if there exists an -adic -basis of and is Noetherian.

     

Stability of -algebras associated to graphs

We characterize stability of graph -algebras by giving five conditions equivalent to their stability. We also show that if is a graph with no sources, then is stable if and only if each vertex in can be reached by an infinite number of vertices. We use this characterization to realize the stabilization of a graph -algebra. Specifically, if is a graph and is the graph formed by adding a head to each vertex of , then is the stabilization of ; that is, .

     

Cohomology of symplectic reductions of generic coadjoint orbits

Let be a generic coadjoint orbit of a compact semi-simple Lie group . Weight varieties are the symplectic reductions of by the maximal torus in . We use a theorem of Tolman and Weitsman to compute the cohomology ring of these varieties. Our formula relies on a Schubert basis of the equivariant cohomology of , and it makes explicit the dependence on and a parameter in .

     

Local existence of -sets, projective tensor products, and Arens regularity for

Theorem. If are perfect compact subsets of the locally compact metrizable abelian group, then there are pairwise disjoint perfect subsets such that (i) is either a Kronecker set or (ii) for some , is a translate of a -set all of whose elements have order , and (iii) is isomorphic to the projective tensor product .

This extends what was previously known for groups such as or for the case to the general locally compact abelian group. Old results concerning the local existence of Kronecker and -sets are improved.
