Two Dimensional Nilpotent Euclidean Nearrings

We find all multiplications on the two dimensional Euclidean group (IR²,+) such that (IR², +, ·) is a nilpotent topological nearring of rank three. We determine the left, right, and two sided ideals of these nearrings and we determine when two of these nearrings are isomorphic. As a consequence, we are able to conclude that there are infinitely many isomorphism classes of such nearrings. This is in considerable contrast to the case for rings. There are only eight isomorphism classes of topological rings with additive group (IR²,+).AMS Subject Classification (2000) 16Y30     

Two dimensions are easier

In this little note I first recall a particularly short proof of the classical isoperimetric inequality in two dimensions. Other geometric inequalities are still open in more than two dimensions. I point out six of those.     

Two nonisomorphicK-automorphisms with isomorphic squares

By taking two different skew products of an initial transformation and a two point space, two measure preserving transformations with the same square are constructed. By direct arguments on the doubly infinite partition names of points in these processes, they are shown to beK-automorphisms and non-isomorphic. This work is a part of the author’s Ph.D. dissertation written at Stanford University under D. S. Ornstein.     

Mathematical Instantons in Characteristic Two

On P³, we show that mathematical instantons in characteristic two are unobstructed. We produce upper bounds for the dimension of the moduli space of stable rank two bundles on P³ in characteristic two. In cases where there is a phenomenon of good reduction modulo two, these give similar results in characteristic zero. We also give an example of a nonreduced component of the moduli space in characteristic two.

Infinitesimal Classification of Systems of Two First Order Partial Differential Equations in Two Variables

Systems of two first order PDE with respect to two functions of two variables are considered. A classification of symbols of such systems with respect to the natural action of the group of local changes of dependent and independent variables is given. Bibliography: 6 titles.
