Let , , and let denote the sequence of convergents to the regular continued fraction of . Let be a function holomorphic at the origin, with a power series of the form . We assume that for infinitely many we simultaneously have (i) , (ii) the coefficients stay outside two small disks, and (iii) the series is lacunary, with for . We then prove that has infinitely many periodic orbits in every neighborhood of the origin.

A scheme of codimension is called standard determinantal if its homogeneous saturated ideal can be generated by the maximal minors of a homogeneous matrix and is said to be good determinantal if it is standard determinantal and a generic complete intersection. Given integers and we denote by (resp. ) the locus of good (resp. standard) determinantal schemes of codimension defined by the maximal minors of a matrix where is a homogeneous polynomial of degree .

In this paper we address the following three fundamental problems: To determine (1) the dimension of (resp. ) in terms of and , (2) whether the closure of is an irreducible component of , and (3) when is generically smooth along . Concerning question (1) we give an upper bound for the dimension of (resp. ) which works for all integers and , and we conjecture that this bound is sharp. The conjecture is proved for , and for under some restriction on and . For questions (2) and (3) we have an affirmative answer for and , and for under certain numerical assumptions.

Let be a smooth scheme of finite type over a field , let be a locally free -bimodule of rank , and let be the non-commutative symmetric algebra generated by . We construct an internal functor, , on the category of graded right -modules. When has rank 2, we prove that is Gorenstein by computing the right derived functors of . When is a smooth projective variety, we prove a version of Serre Duality for using the right derived functors of .

Here denotes the best constant. If , then as was shown by Burkholder. We show here that for the case 2$">, and that is also the best constant in the analogous inequality for two martingales and indexed by , right continuous with limits from the left, adapted to the same filtration, and such that is nonnegative and nondecreasing in . In Section 7, we prove a similar inequality for harmonic functions.

Let be a right noetherian ring and let be the class of all finitely presented modules of finite projective dimension. We prove that findim iff there is an (infinitely generated) tilting module such that pd and . If is an artin algebra, then can be taken to be finitely generated iff is contravariantly finite. We also obtain a sufficient condition for validity of the First Finitistic Dimension Conjecture that extends the well-known result of Huisgen-Zimmermann and Smalø.

Let be the unital semigroup algebra of . We show that the cyclic cohomology groups vanish when is odd and are one dimensional when is even (). Using Connes' exact sequence, these results are used to show that the simplicial cohomology groups vanish for . The results obtained are extended to unital algebras for some other semigroups of .

Let be a family of holomorphic functions in a domain depending holomorphically on . We study the distribution of zeros of in a subdomain whose boundary is a closed non-singular analytic curve. As an application, we obtain several results about distributions of zeros of families of generalized exponential polynomials and displacement maps related to certain ODE's.

Let , , be a bounded Lipschitz domain. For Laplace's equation in , we study the Dirichlet and Neumann problems with boundary data in the weighted space , where , is a fixed point on , and denotes the surface measure on . We prove that there exists such that the Dirichlet problem is uniquely solvable if , and the Neumann problem is uniquely solvable if . If is a domain, one may take . The regularity for the Dirichlet problem with data in the weighted Sobolev space is also considered. Finally we establish the weighted estimates with general weights for the Dirichlet and regularity problems.

The -component of the index of a number field , , depends only on the completions of at the primes over . More precisely, equals the index of the -algebra . If is normal, then for some normal over and some , and we write for its index. In this paper we describe an effective procedure to compute for all and all normal and tamely ramified extensions of , hence to determine for all Galois number fields that are tamely ramified at . Using our procedure, we are able to exhibit a counterexample to a conjecture of Nart (1985) on the behaviour of .

We consider a class of second-order uniformly elliptic operators with unbounded coefficients in . Using a Bernstein approach we provide several uniform estimates for the semigroup generated by the realization of the operator in the space of all bounded and continuous or Hölder continuous functions in . As a consequence, we obtain optimal Schauder estimates for the solution to both the elliptic equation (0$">) and the nonhomogeneous Dirichlet Cauchy problem . Then, we prove two different kinds of pointwise estimates of that can be used to prove a Liouville-type theorem. Finally, we provide sharp estimates of the semigroup in weighted -spaces related to the invariant measure associated with the semigroup.

This paper addresses problems on arithmetic Macaulayfications of projective schemes. We give a surprising complete answer to a question poised by Cutkosky and Herzog. Let be the blow-up of a projective scheme along the ideal sheaf of . It is known that there are embeddings for , where denotes the maximal generating degree of , and that there exists a Cohen-Macaulay ring of the form (which gives an arithmetic Macaulayfication of ) if and only if , for , and is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. We show that under these conditions, there are well-determined invariants and such that is Cohen-Macaulay for all d(I)e + \varepsilon$"> and e_0$">, and that these bounds are the best possible. We also investigate the existence of a Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebra of the form . If has negative -invariant, we prove that such a Cohen-Macaulay Rees algebra exists if and only if , for 0$">, and is equidimensional and Cohen-Macaulay. Moreover, these conditions imply the Cohen-Macaulayness of for all d(I)e + \varepsilon$"> and e_0$">.

We consider a locally compact group and a limiting measure of a commutative infinitesimal triangular system (c.i.t.s.) of probability measures on . We show, under some restrictions on , or , that belongs to a continuous one-parameter convolution semigroup. In particular, this result is valid for symmetric c.i.t.s. on any locally compact group . It is also valid for a limiting measure which has `full' support on a Zariski connected -algebraic group , where is a local field, and any one of the following conditions is satisfied: (1) is a compact extension of a closed solvable normal subgroup, in particular, is amenable, (2) has finite one-moment or (3) has density and in case the characteristic of is positive, the radical of is -defined. We also discuss the spectral radius of the convolution operator of a probability measure on a locally compact group , we show that it is always positive for any probability measure on , and it is also multiplicative in case of symmetric commuting measures.

This paper studies ordinary and general convergence of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction.

Let the continued fraction expansion of any irrational number be denoted by and let the -th convergent of this continued fraction expansion be denoted by . Let

where . Let . It is shown that if , then the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction diverges at . is an uncountable set of measure zero. It is also shown that there is an uncountable set of points such that if , then does not converge generally.

It is further shown that does not converge generally for 1$">. However we show that does converge generally if is a primitive -th root of unity, for some . Combining this result with a theorem of I. Schur then gives that the continued fraction converges generally at all roots of unity.

A chain order of a skew field is a subring of so that implies Such a ring has rank one if , the Jacobson radical of is its only nonzero completely prime ideal. We show that a rank one chain order of is either invariant, in which case corresponds to a real-valued valuation of or is nearly simple, in which case and are the only ideals of or is exceptional in which case contains a prime ideal that is not completely prime. We use the group of divisorial of with the subgroup of principal to characterize these cases. The exceptional case subdivides further into infinitely many cases depending on the index of in Using the covering group of and the result that the group ring is embeddable into a skew field for a skew field, examples of rank one chain orders are constructed for each possible exceptional case.

Let be an irreducible crystallographic root system with Weyl group , coroot lattice and Coxeter number , spanning a Euclidean space , and let be a positive integer. It is known that the set of regions into which the fundamental chamber of is dissected by the hyperplanes in of the form for and is equinumerous to the set of orbits of the action of on the quotient . A bijection between these two sets, as well as a bijection to the set of certain chains of order ideals in the root poset of , are described and are shown to preserve certain natural statistics on these sets. The number of elements of these sets and their corresponding refinements generalize the classical Catalan and Narayana numbers, which occur in the special case and .

Let be an -finite regular local ring and an ideal contained in . Let . Fedder proved that is -pure if and only if . We have noted a new proof for his criterion, along with showing that , where is the pullback of the test ideal for . Combining the the -purity criterion and the above result we see that if is -pure then is also -pure. In fact, we can form a filtration of , that stabilizes such that each is -pure and its test ideal is . To find examples of these filtrations we have made explicit calculations of test ideals in the following setting: Let , where is either a polynomial or a power series ring and is generated by monomials and the are regular. Set . Then .

Say that a separable, unital -algebra is strongly self-absorbing if there exists an isomorphism such that and are approximately unitarily equivalent -homomorphisms. We study this class of algebras, which includes the Cuntz algebras , , the UHF algebras of infinite type, the Jiang-Su algebra and tensor products of with UHF algebras of infinite type. Given a strongly self-absorbing -algebra we characterise when a separable -algebra absorbs tensorially (i.e., is -stable), and prove closure properties for the class of separable -stable -algebras. Finally, we compute the possible -groups and prove a number of classification results which suggest that the examples listed above are the only strongly self-absorbing -algebras.

We examine the possible extensions to the Lipschitzian setting of the classical result on -convergence: first (approximation), if a sequence of functions of class from to converges uniformly to a function of class , then the gradient of is a limit of gradients of in the sense that ; second (regularization), the functions can be chosen to be of class and -converging to in the sense that . In other words, the space of functions is dense in the space of functions endowed with the pseudo-norm.

We first deepen the properties of Warga's counterexample (1981) for the extension of the approximation part to the Lipschitzian setting. This part cannot be extended, even if one restricts the approximation schemes to the classical convolution and the Lasry-Lions regularization. We thus make more precise various results in the literature on the convergence of subdifferentials.

We then show that the regularization part can be extended to the Lipschitzian setting, namely if is a locally Lipschitz function, we build a sequence of smooth functions such that

In other words, the space of functions is dense in the space of locally Lipschitz functions endowed with an appropriate Lipschitz pseudo-distance. Up to now, Rockafellar and Wets (1998) have shown that the convolution procedure permits us to have the equality , which cannot provide the exactness of our result.

As a consequence, we obtain a similar result on the regularization of epi-Lipschitz sets. With both functional and set parts, we improve previous results in the literature on the regularization of functions and sets.
