We prove that if , are finite modules over a Gorenstein local ring of codimension at most , then the vanishing of for is equivalent to the vanishing of for . Furthermore, if has no embedded deformation, then such vanishing occurs if and only if or has finite projective dimension.

A set is -straight if has finite Hausdorff -measure equal to its Hausdorff -content, where is continuous and non-decreasing with . Here, if satisfies the standard doubling condition, then every set of finite Hausdorff -measure in is shown to be a countable union of -straight sets. This also settles a conjecture of Foran that when , every set of finite -measure is a countable union of -straight sets.

Let be an operator on an infinite-dimensional complex Banach space. By means of Mbekhta's subspaces and , we give a spectral theory of compact operators. The main results are: Let be compact. . The following assertions are all equivalent: (1) 0 is an isolated point in the spectrum of (2) is closed; (3) is of finite dimension; (4) is closed; (5) is of finite dimension; . sufficient conditions for to be an isolated point in ; . sufficient and necessary conditions for to be a pole of the resolvent of .

An abelian -group is called (fully) transitive if for all with ( ) there exists an automorphism (endomorphism) of which maps onto . It is a long-standing problem of A. L. S. Corner whether there exist non-transitive but fully transitive -groups with finite first Ulm subgroup. In this paper we restrict ourselves to -groups of type , this is to say -groups satisfying . We show that the answer to Corner's question is no if is finite and is of type .

For an analytic function which maps the open unit disc to itself, let be the operator of composition with on the Bergman space . It has been a longstanding problem to determine whether or not the membership of in the Schatten class , , is equivalent to the condition that the function has a finite integral with respect to the Möbius-invariant measure on . We show that the answer is negative when .

A coloring of a set is any subset of , where 1$"> is a natural number. We give some sufficient conditions for the existence of a perfect -homogeneous set, in the case where is and is a Polish space. In particular, we show that it is sufficient that there exist -homogeneous sets of arbitrarily large countable Cantor-Bendixson rank. We apply our methods to show that an analytic subset of the plane contains a perfect -clique if it contains any uncountable -clique, where is a natural number or (a set is a -clique in if the convex hull of any of its -element subsets is not contained in ).

It is shown that for the pluripolar set in there is a global Bernstein-Walsh inequality: If is a polynomial of degree on and on , this inequality gives an upper bound for which grows like . The result is used to obtain sharp estimates for .

In this paper, we solve a conjecture of S. Bell (1992) affirmatively. Actually, we prove that every non-degenerate -connected planar domain , where 1$">is representable as with a suitable rational function of degree . This result is considered as a natural generalization of the classical Riemann mapping theorem for simply connected planar domains.

Motivated by a question of Gruenhage, we investigate when is the union of less than continuum many translates of a compact set . It will follow from one of our general results that if a compact set has packing dimension less than 1, then is not the union of less than continuum many translates of .

Since an H-separable extension is of depth two, we associate to it dual bialgebroids and over the centralizer as in Kadison-Szlachányi. We show that has an antipode and is a Hopf algebroid. is also Hopf algebroid under the condition that the centralizer is an Azumaya algebra over the center of . For depth two extension , we show that .

Let be an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, and let be a surjective morphism of connected pro-affine algebraic groups over . We show that if is bijective and separable, then is an isomorphism of pro-affine algebraic groups. Moreover, is separable if and only if (its differential) is surjective. Furthermore, if is separable, then .

Fix a free, orientation-preserving action of a finite group on a -dimensional handlebody . Whenever acts freely preserving orientation on a connected -manifold , there is a -equivariant imbedding of into . There are choices of closed and Seifert-fibered for which the image of is a handlebody of a Heegaard splitting of . Provided that the genus of is at least , there are similar choices with closed and hyperbolic.

and denote the Hardy spaces on the open unit disc . Let be a function in and . If is an inner function and , then is orthogonal in . W.Rudin asked if the converse is true and C. Sundberg and C. Bishop showed that the converse is not true. Therefore there exists a function such that is not an inner function and is orthogonal in . In this paper, the following is shown: is orthogonal in if and only if there exists a unique probability measure on [0,1] with supp such that for nearly all in where is the Nevanlinna counting function of . If is an inner function, then is a Dirac measure at .

We show that C. J. Read's example of an operator on which does not have any non-trivial invariant subspaces is not the adjoint of an operator on a predual of . Furthermore, we present a bounded diagonal operator such that even though is unbounded, the operator is a bounded operator on with invariant subspaces, and is adjoint to an operator on .

Let be a complete local domain containing the integers with maximal ideal such that is at least the cardinality of the real numbers. Let be a nonmaximal prime ideal of such that is a regular local ring. We construct an excellent local ring such that the completion of is , the generic formal fiber of is local with maximal ideal and if is a nonzero ideal of , then is complete.

Helly's theorem implies that if is a finite collection of (positive) homothets of a planar convex body , any three having non-empty intersection, then has non-empty intersection. We show that for collections of homothets (including translates) of the boundary , if any four curves in have non-empty intersection, then has non-empty intersection. We prove the following dual version: If any four points of a finite set in the plane can be covered by a translate [homothet] of , then can be covered by a translate [homothet] of . These results are best possible in general.

In this note we give a new, natural construction of a compactification of the stack of smooth -spin curves, which we call the stack of stable twisted -spin curves. This stack is identified with a special case of a stack of twisted stable maps of Abramovich and Vistoli. Realizations in terms of admissible -spaces and -line bundles are given as well. The infinitesimal structure of this stack is described in a relatively straightforward manner, similar to that of usual stable curves.
We construct representable morphisms from the stacks of stable twisted -spin curves to the stacks of stable -spin curves and show that they are isomorphisms. Many delicate features of -spin curves, including torsion free sheaves with power maps, arise as simple by-products of twisted spin curves. Various constructions, such as the -operator of Seeley and Singer and Witten's cohomology class go through without complications in the setting of twisted spin curves.
