This paper investigates the time-consistent dynamic mean–variance hedging of longevity risk with a longevity security contingent on a mortality index or the national mortality. Using an HJB framework, we solve the hedging problem in which insurance liabilities follow a doubly stochastic Poisson process with an intensity rate that is correlated and cointegrated to the index mortality rate. The derived closed-form optimal hedging policy articulates the important role of cointegration in longevity hedging. We show numerically that a time-consistent hedging policy is a smoother function in time when compared with its time-inconsistent counterpart.  相似文献

In this paper, we are interested in hedging strategies which allow the insurer to reduce the risk to their portfolio of unit-linked life insurance contracts with minimum death guarantee. Hedging strategies are developed in the Black and Scholes model and in the Merton jump-diffusion model. According to the new frameworks (IFRS, Solvency II and MCEV), risk premium is integrated into our valuations. We will study the optimality of hedging strategies by comparing risk indicators (Expected loss, volatility, VaR and CTE) in relation to transaction costs and costs generated by the re-hedging error. We will analyze the robustness of hedging strategies by stress-testing the effect of a sharp rise in future mortality rates and a severe depreciation in the price of the underlying asset.  相似文献

The accurate estimation of outstanding liabilities of an insurance company is an essential task. This is to meet regulatory requirements, but also to achieve efficient internal capital management. Over the recent years, there has been increasing interest in the utilisation of insurance data at a more granular level, and to model claims using stochastic processes. So far, this so-called ‘micro-level reserving’ approach has mainly focused on the Poisson process. In this paper, we propose and apply a Cox process approach to model the arrival process and reporting pattern of insurance claims. This allows for over-dispersion and serial dependency in claim counts, which are typical features in real data. We explicitly consider risk exposure and reporting delays, and show how to use our model to predict the numbers of Incurred-But-Not-Reported (IBNR) claims. The model is calibrated and illustrated using real data from the AUSI data set.  相似文献

This paper looks at the development of dynamic hedging strategies for typical pension plan liabilities using longevity-linked hedging instruments. Progress in this area has been hindered by the lack of closed-form formulae for the valuation of mortality-linked liabilities and assets, and the consequent requirement for simulations within simulations. We propose the use of the probit function along with a Taylor expansion to approximate longevity-contingent values. This makes it possible to develop and implement computationally efficient, discrete-time delta hedging strategies using q-forwards as hedging instruments. The methods are tested using the model proposed by Cairns et al. (2006a) (CBD). We find that the probit approximations are generally very accurate, and that the discrete-time hedging strategy is very effective at reducing risk.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the solvency of a portfolio of assets and liabilities of an insurer subject to both longevity and financial risks. Liabilities are evaluated at fair-value and, as a consequence, interest-rate risk can affect both the assets and the liabilities. Longevity risk is described via a continuous-time cohort model. We evaluate the effects of natural hedging strategies on the risk profile of an insurance portfolio in run-off. Numerical simulations, calibrated to UK historical data, show that systematic longevity risk is of particular importance and needs to be hedged. Natural hedging can improve the solvency of the insurer, if interest-rate risk is appropriately managed. We stress that asset allocation choices should not be independent of the composition of the liability portfolio of the insurer.  相似文献

For market consistent life insurance liabilities modelled with a multi-state Markov chain, it is of importance to consider the interest and transition rates as stochastic processes, for example in order to consider hedging possibilities of the risks, and for risk measurement. In the literature, this is usually done with an assumption of independence between the interest and transition rates. In this paper, it is shown how to valuate life insurance liabilities using affine processes for modelling dependent interest and transition rates. This approach leads to the introduction of so-called dependent forward rates. We propose a specific model for surrender modelling, and within this model the dependent forward rates are calculated, and the market value and the Solvency II capital requirement are examined for a simple savings contract.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the optimal dynamic asset allocation of pension fund with mortality risk and salary risk. The managers of the pension fund try to find the optimal investment policy (optimal asset allocation) to maximize the expected utility of terminal wealth. The market is a combination of financial market and insurance market. The financial market consists of three assets: cashes with stochastic interest rate, stocks and rolling bonds, while the insurance market consists of mortality risk and salary risk. These two non-hedging risks cause incompleteness of the market. By martingale method and dynamic programming principle we first derive the approximate optimal investment policy to overcome the difficulty, then investigate the efficiency of the approximation. Finally, we solve an optimal assets liabilities management(ALM) problem with mortality risk and salary risk under CRRA utility, and reveal the influence of these two risks on the optimal investment policy by numerical illustration.  相似文献

Basis risk arises in a number of financial and insurance risk management problems when the hedging assets do not perfectly match the underlying asset in a hedging program. Notable examples in insurance include the hedging for longevity risks, weather index–based insurance products, variable annuities, etc. In the presence of basis risk, a perfect hedging is impossible, and in this paper, we adopt a mean‐variance criterion to strike a balance between the expected hedging error and its variability. Under a time‐dependent diffusion model setup, explicit optimal solutions are derived for the hedging target being either a European option or a forward contract. The solutions are obtained by a delicate application of the linear quadratic control theory, the method of backward stochastic differential equation, and Malliavin calculus. A numerical example is presented to illustrate our theoretical results and their interesting implications.  相似文献

In this paper, we investigate the fair valuation of insurance liabilities in a dynamic multi-period setting. We define a fair dynamic valuation as a valuation which is actuarial (mark-to-model for claims independent of financial market evolutions), market-consistent (mark-to-market for any hedgeable part of a claim) and time-consistent, extending the work of Dhaene et al. (2017) and Barigou and Dhaene (2019). We provide a complete hedging characterization for fair dynamic valuations. Moreover, we show how to implement fair dynamic valuations through a backward iterations scheme combining risk minimization methods from mathematical finance with standard actuarial techniques based on risk measures.  相似文献

We study the valuation and hedging of unit-linked life insurance contracts in a setting where mortality intensity is governed by a stochastic process. We focus on model risk arising from different specifications for the mortality intensity. To do so we assume that the mortality intensity is almost surely bounded under the statistical measure. Further, we restrict the equivalent martingale measures and apply the same bounds to the mortality intensity under these measures. For this setting we derive upper and lower price bounds for unit-linked life insurance contracts using stochastic control techniques. We also show that the induced hedging strategies indeed produce a dynamic superhedge and subhedge under the statistical measure in the limit when the number of contracts increases. This justifies the bounds for the mortality intensity under the pricing measures. We provide numerical examples investigating fixed-term, endowment insurance contracts and their combinations including various guarantee features. The pricing partial differential equation for the upper and lower price bounds is solved by finite difference methods. For our contracts and choice of parameters the pricing and hedging is fairly robust with respect to misspecification of the mortality intensity. The model risk resulting from the uncertain mortality intensity is of minor importance.  相似文献

In the last decade a vast literature on stochastic mortality models has been developed. However, these models are often not directly applicable to insurance portfolios because:
(a) For insurers and pension funds it is more relevant to model mortality rates measured in insured amounts instead of measured in the number of policies.
(b) Often there is not enough insurance portfolio specific mortality data available to fit such stochastic mortality models reliably.
Therefore, in this paper a stochastic model is proposed for portfolio specific mortality experience. Combining this stochastic process with a stochastic country population mortality process leads to stochastic portfolio specific mortality rates, measured in insured amounts. The proposed stochastic process is applied to two insurance portfolios, and the impact on the Value at Risk for longevity risk is quantified. Furthermore, the model can be used to quantify the basis risk that remains when hedging portfolio specific mortality risk with instruments of which the payoff depends on population mortality rates.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate an asset–liability management problem for a stream of liabilities written on liquid traded assets and non-traded sources of risk. We assume that the financial market consists of a risk-free asset and a risky asset which follows a geometric Lévy process. The non-tradeable factor (insurance risk or default risk) is driven by a step process with a stochastic intensity. Our framework allows us to consider financial risk, systematic and unsystematic insurance loss risk (including longevity risk), together with possible dependencies between them. An optimal investment strategy is derived by solving a quadratic optimization problem with a terminal objective and a running cost penalizing deviations of the insurer’s wealth from a specified profit-solvency target. Techniques of backward stochastic differential equations and the weak property of predictable representation are applied to obtain the optimal asset allocation.  相似文献

Effective hedging strategies for variable annuities are crucial for insurance companies in preventing potentially large losses. We consider discrete hedging of options embedded in guarantees with ratchet features, under both equity (including jump) risk and interest rate risk. Since discrete hedging and the underlying model considered lead to an incomplete market, we compute hedging strategies using local risk minimization. Our results suggest that risk minimization hedging, under a joint model for the underlying and interest rate, leads to effective risk reduction. Moreover, hedging with standard options is superior to hedging with the underlying when both equity and interest rate risks are appropriately modeled.  相似文献

By applying the principle of equivalent forward preferences, this paper revisits the pricing and hedging problems for equity-linked life insurance contracts. The equity-linked contingent claim depends on, not only the future lifetime of the policyholder, but also the performance of the reference portfolio in the financial market for the segregated account of the policyholder. For both zero volatility and non-zero volatility forward utility preferences, prices and hedging strategies of the contract are represented by solutions of random horizon backward stochastic differential equations. Numerical illustration is provided for the zero volatility case. The derived prices and hedging strategies are also compared with classical results in the literature.  相似文献

In this paper we study the hedging of typical life insurance payment processes in a general setting by means of the well-known risk-minimization approach. We find the optimal risk-minimizing strategy in a financial market where we allow for investments in a hedging instrument based on a longevity index, representing the systematic mortality risk. Thereby we take into account and model the basis risk that arises due to the fact that the insurance company cannot perfectly hedge its exposure by investing in a hedging instrument that is based on the longevity index, not on the insurance portfolio itself. We also provide a detailed example within the context of unit-linked life insurance products where the dependency between the index and the insurance portfolio is described by means of an affine mean-reverting diffusion process with stochastic drift.  相似文献

Inflation risk is of high relevance in non-life insurers’ long-tail business and can have a major impact on claims reserving. In this paper, we empirically study claims inflation with focus on automobile liability insurance based on a data set provided by a large German non-life insurance company. The aim is to obtain empirical insight regarding the drivers of claims inflation risk and its impact on reserving. Toward this end, we use stepwise multiple regression analysis to identify relevant drivers based on economic indices related to health costs and consumer prices, amongst others. We further study the impact of (implicitly and explicitly) predicting calendar year inflation effects on claims reserves using stochastic inflation models. Our results show that drivers for claims inflation can considerably vary for different lines of business and emphasize the importance of explicitly dealing with (stochastic) claims inflation when calculating reserves.  相似文献

The paper provides a new hedging methodology permitting systematic hedging choices with wide applications. Dynamic concave bid price, and convex ask price functionals from the recent literature are employed to construct new hedging strategies termed dynamic conic hedging. The primary focus of these strategies is to adopt positions maximizing a nonlinear conditional expectation expressed recursively as a concave current bid price for the one step ahead risk held or minimizing the convex current ask price for the risk promised. Risk management and hedging then have a new market value enhancing perspective different from the classical forms of risk mitigation, local variance minimization, or even expected utility maximization.  相似文献
