The main purpose of this paper is to obtain the well-known results of H.Fujita and K.Hayakawa on the nonexistence of nontrivial nonnegative global solutions for the Cauchy problem for the equation


with on the half-space as a consequence of a new Liouville theorem of elliptic type for solutions of () on . This new result is in turn a consequence of other new phenomena established for nonlinear evolution problems. In particular, we prove that the inequality

We establish certain uniform inequalities for a family of second order elliptic operators of the form on the -torus, where and is a symmetric, positive definite matrix with real constant entries. Using these Sobolev type inequalities, we obtain the absolute continuity of the spectrum of the periodic Dirac operator on with singular potential. The absolute continuity of the elliptic operator div on with a positive periodic scalar function is also studied.

The expected number of real zeros and maxima of the curve representing algebraic polynomial of the form

where , are independent standard normal random variables, are known. In this paper we provide the asymptotic value for the expected number of maxima which occur below a given level. We also show that most of the zero crossings of the curve representing the polynomial are perpendicular to the axis. The results show a significant difference in mathematical behaviour between our polynomial and the random algebraic polynomial of the form which was previously the most studied.

A nonempty bounded open set () is said to have the Pompeiu property if and only if the only continuous function on for which the integral of over is zero for all rigid motions of is . We consider a nonempty bounded open set with Lipschitz boundary and we assume that the complement of is connected. We show that the failure of the Pompeiu property for implies some geometric conditions. Using these conditions we prove that a special kind of solid tori in , , has the Pompeiu property. So far the result was proved only for solid tori in . We also examine the case of planar domains. Finally we extend the example of solid tori to domains in bounded by hypersurfaces of revolution.

Let be the algebraic transfer, which is defined by W. Singer as an algebraic version of the geometrical transfer . It has been shown that the algebraic transfer is highly nontrivial and, more precisely, that is an isomorphism for . However, Singer showed that is not an epimorphism. In this paper, we prove that does not detect the nonzero element for every . As a consequence, the localized given by inverting the squaring operation is not an epimorphism. This gives a negative answer to a prediction by Minami.

By using variational methods and critical point theory, we give some criteria to guarantee that the above-mentioned impulsive problems have at least one weak solution and a sequences of weak solutions.
