In this paper we present a new infinite family of partition identities. The genesis of our work lies in two formulas of Lucy Slater related to the modulus 8. Hirschhorn, Agarwal and Subbarao have previously found intriguing interpretations for Slater's formula, but none has led to an infinite family of results.  相似文献

We prove, by the WZ-method, some hypergeometric identities which relate ten extended Ramanujan type series to simpler hypergeometric series. The identities we are going to prove are valid for all the values of a parameter a when they are convergent. Sometimes, even if they do not converge, they are valid if we consider these identities as limits.   相似文献

A generalized Bailey pair, which contains several special cases considered by Bailey (Proc. London Math. Soc. (2), 50, 421–435 (1949)), is derived and used to find a number of new Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. Consideration of associated q-difference equations points to a connection with a mild extension of Gordon’s combinatorial generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities (Amer. J. Math., 83, 393–399 (1961)). This, in turn, allows the formulation of natural combinatorial interpretations of many of the identities in Slater’s list (Proc. London Math. Soc. (2) 54, 147–167 (1952)), as well as the new identities presented here. More than 200 years ago, Pfaff found two generalizations of Leibniz’s rule for the nth derivative of a product of two functions. Thirty years later Cauchy found two similar identities, one equivalent to one of Pfaff’s and the other new. We give simple proofs of these little-known identities and some further history. We also give applications to Abel-Rothe type binomial identities, Lagrange’s series, and Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. Most importantly, we give extensions that are related to the Pfaff/Cauchy theorems as Hurwitz’s generalized binomial theorems are to the Abel-Rothe identities. We apply these extensions to Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials as well. In this we paper we prove several new identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan-Slater type. These identities were found as the result of computer searches. The proofs involve a variety of techniques, including series-series identities, Bailey pairs, a theorem of Watson on basic hypergeometric series, generating functions and miscellaneous methods. We present a geometric framework for a class of partition identities. We show that there exists a unique bijection proving these identities, which satisfies certain linearity conditions. In particular, we show that Corteel's bijection enumerating partitions with nonnegative -th differences can be obtained by our approach. Other examples and generalizations are presented.

Let L be a Lie algebra, nilpotent of class 2, over an infinite field K, and suppose that the centre C of L is one dimensional; such Lie algebras are called Heisenberg algebras. Let ρ:L→hom KV be a finite dimensional representation of the Heisenberg algebra L such that ρ(C) contains non-singular linear transformations of V, and denote l(ρ) the ideal of identities for the representation ρ. We prove that the ideals of identities of representations containing I(ρ) and generated by multilinear polynomials satisfy the ACC. Let sl 2(L) be the Lie algebra of the traceless 2×2 matrices over K, and suppose the characteristic of K equals 2. As a corollary we obtain that the ideals of identities of representations of Lie algebras containing that of the regular representation of sl 2(K) and generated by multilinear polynomials, are finitely based. In addition we show that one cannot simply dispense with the condition of multilinearity. Namely, we show that the ACC is violated for the ideals of representations of Lie algebras (over an infinite field of characteristic 2) that contain the identities of the regular representation of sl 2(K).  相似文献

We provide a bijective map from the partitions enumerated by the series side of the Rogers-Selberg mod 7 identities onto partitions associated with a special case of Basil Gordon's combinatorial generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. The implications of applying the same map to a special case of David Bressoud's even modulus analog of Gordon's theorem are also explored.  相似文献

We extend partition-theoretic work of Andrews, Bressoud, and Burge to overpartitions, defining the notions of successive ranks, generalized Durfee squares, and generalized lattice paths, and then relating these to overpartitions defined by multiplicity conditions on the parts. This leads to many new partition and overpartition identities, and provides a unification of a number of well-known identities of the Rogers-Ramanujan type. Among these are Gordon's generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan identities, Andrews' generalization of the Göllnitz-Gordon identities, and Lovejoy's “Gordon's theorems for overpartitions.”  相似文献

By using the theory of Riordan arrays, we establish four pairs of general r-Stirling number identities, which reduce to various identities on harmonic numbers, hyperharmonic numbers, the Stirling numbers of the first and second kind, the r-Stirling numbers of the first and second kind, and the r-Lah numbers. We further discuss briefly the connections between the r-Stirling numbers and the Cauchy numbers, the generalized hyperharmonic numbers, and the poly-Bernoulli polynomials. Many known identities are shown to be special cases of our results, and the combinatorial interpretations of several particular identities are also presented as supplements.  相似文献

For Ramanujan’s modular identities connected with his well-known partition congruences for the moduli 5 or 7, we had given, in an earlier paper, natural and uniform proofs through the medium of modular forms. We give a new proof of the generalized Minkowski identities relating the higher degree mean curvatures of orientable closed hypersurfaces immersed in a given constant sectional curvature manifold. Our methods rely on a fundamental differential system of Riemannian geometry introduced by the author. We develop the notion of position vector field, which lies at the core of the Minkowski identities.  相似文献

We present several new families of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities related to the moduli 18 and 24. A few of the identities were found by either Ramanujan, Slater, or Dyson, but most are believed to be new. For one of these families, we discuss possible connections with Lie algebras. The history of Liouville's identities is of remarkable interest especially as far as the methods used to prove them are concerned. In Liouville's opinion, the identities had to be proved by merely arithmetic considerations. Some mathematicians, such as Uspensky, developed Liouville's approach and used elementary methods. However, other mathematicians (among them Nazimoff and Bell) followed Hermite's suggestions of deriving Liouville's identities from the theory of elliptic functions: most of them thought that analytic methods were preferable since they allowed one to discover new identities (and not only to prove known ones).  相似文献

A formal computation proving a new operator identity from known ones is, in principle, restricted by domains and codomains of linear operators involved, since not any two operators can be added or composed. Algebraically, identities can be modelled by noncommutative polynomials and such a formal computation proves that the polynomial corresponding to the new identity lies in the ideal generated by the polynomials corresponding to the known identities. In order to prove an operator identity, however, just proving membership of the polynomial in the ideal is not enough, since the ring of noncommutative polynomials ignores domains and codomains. We show that it suffices to additionally verify compatibility of this polynomial and of the generators of the ideal with the labelled quiver that encodes which polynomials can be realized as linear operators. Then, for every consistent representation of such a quiver in a linear category, there exists a computation in the category that proves the corresponding instance of the identity. Moreover, by assigning the same label to several edges of the quiver, the algebraic framework developed allows to model different versions of an operator by the same indeterminate in the noncommutative polynomials.  相似文献
