A highway problem is determined by a connected graph which provides all potential entry and exit vertices and all possible edges that can be constructed between vertices, a cost function on the edges of the graph and a set of players, each in need of constructing a connection between a specific entry and exit vertex. Mosquera (2007) introduce highway problems and the corresponding cooperative cost games called highway games to address the problem of fair allocation of the construction costs in case the underlying graph is a tree. In this paper, we study the concavity and the balancedness of highway games on weakly cyclic graphs. A graph G is called highway-game concave if for each highway problem in which G is the underlying graph the corresponding highway game is concave. We show that a graph is highway-game concave if and only if it is weakly triangular. Moreover, we prove that highway games on weakly cyclic graphs are balanced.  相似文献

This paper considers a cost allocation problem that arises from a delivery problem associated with the Chinese postman problem (CPP). A delivery problem is described by a connected undirected graph in which each edge belongs to a different player, a cost function on the edges of this graph and a fixed vertex which is referred to as the post office. Assume that the post office is providing some service to the players. The nature of this service, which can be thought of as mail delivery, requires that a server will travel along the edges of the graph and returns to the post office. The cost allocation problem is concerned with the cost of providing the service to all players. A specific cost allocation rule is introduced and characterized. Further, the class of delivery problems gives rise to a new class of cooperative combinatorial optimization games called delivery games. It is shown that the outcome of the allocation rule with respect to a bridge-connected Euler graph is a core element of the corresponding delivery game.  相似文献

The windy postman problem is the NP-hard problem of finding the minimum cost of a tour traversing all edges of an undirected graph, where the cost of an edge depends on the direction of traversal. Given an undirected graph G, we consider the polyhedron O(G) induced by a linear programming relaxation of the windy postman problem. We say that G is windy postman perfect if O(G) is integral. There exists a polynomial-time algorithm, based on the ellipsoid method, to solve the windy postman problem for the class of windy postman perfect graphs. By considering a family of polyhedra related to O(G), we prove that series-parallel graphs are windy postman perfect, therefore solving a conjecture of Win.  相似文献

The intersection graph of a group G is an undirected graph without loops and multiple edges defined as follows: the vertex set is the set of all proper non-trivial subgroups of G, and there is an edge between two distinct vertices H and K if and only if HK≠1 where 1 denotes the trivial subgroup of G. In this paper, we classify finite solvable groups whose intersection graphs are not 2-connected and finite nilpotent groups whose intersection graphs are not 3-connected. Our methods are elementary.  相似文献

A full graph on n vertices, as defined by Fulkerson, is a representation of the intersection and containment relations among a system of n sets. It has an undirected edge between vertices representing intersecting sets and a directed edge from a to b if the corresponding set A contains B;. Kleitman, Lasaga, and Cowen gave a unified argument to show that asymptotically, almost all full graphs can be obtained by taking an arbitrary undirected graph on the n vertices, distinguishing a clique in this graph, which need not be maximal, and then adding directed edges going out from each vertex in the clique to all vertices to which there is not already an existing undirected edge. Call graphs of this type members of the dominant class. This article obtains the first upper and lower bounds on how large n has to be, so that the asymptotic behavior is indeed observed. It is shown that when n > 170, the dominant class predominates, while when n < 17, the full graphs in the dominant class compose less than half of the total number of realizable full graphs on n vertices.  相似文献

We consider graphs which contain both directed and undirected edges (partially directed graphs). We show that the problem of covering the edges of such graphs with a minimum number of edge-disjoint directed paths respecting the orientations of the directed edges is polynomially solvable. We exhibit a good characterization for this problem in the form of a min-max theorem. We introduce a more general problem including weights on possible orientations of the undirected edges. We show that this more general weighted formulation is equivalent to the weighted bipartite b-factor problem. This implies the existence of a strongly polynomial algorithm for this weighted generalization of Euler's problem to partially directed graphs (compare this with the negative results for the mixed Chinese postman problem). We also provide a compact linear programming formulation for the weighted generalization that we propose.  相似文献

For an undirected graph G, a zero-sum flow is an assignment of non-zero real numbers to the edges, such that the sum of the values of all edges incident with each vertex is zero. It has been conjectured that if a graph G has a zero-sum flow, then it has a zero-sum 6-flow. We prove this conjecture and Bouchet’s Conjecture for bidirected graphs are equivalent. Among other results it is shown that if G is an r-regular graph (r ≥ 3), then G has a zero-sum 7-flow. Furthermore, if r is divisible by 3, then G has a zero-sum 5-flow. We also show a graph of order n with a zero-sum flow has a zero-sum (n + 3)2-flow. Finally, the existence of k-flows for small graphs is investigated.  相似文献

A graph is fraternally oriented iff for every three vertices u, ν, w the existence of the edges uw and ν → w implies that u and ν are adjacent. A directed unicyclic graph is obtained from a unicyclic graph by orienting the unique cycle clockwise and by orienting the appended subtrees from the cycle outwardly. Two directed subtrees s, t of a directed unicyclic graph are proper if their union contains no (directed or undirected) cycle and either they are disjoint or one of them s has its root r(s) in t and contains all the successors of r(s) in t. In the present paper we prove that G is an intersection graph of a family of proper directed subtrees of a directed unicyclic graph iff it has a fraternal orientation such that for every vertex ν, Ginν) is acyclic and G(Γoutν) is the transitive closure of a tree. We describe efficient algorithms for recognizing when such graphs are perfect and for testing isomorphism of proper circular-arc graphs.  相似文献

A well-known Theorem of Vizing states that one can colour the edges of a graph by Δ+ colours, such that edges of the same colour form a matching. Here, Δ denotes the maximum degree of a vertex, and the maximum multiplicity of an edge in the graph. An analogue of this Theorem for directed graphs was proved by Frank. It states that one can colour the arcs of a digraph by Δ+ colours, such that arcs of the same colour form a branching. For a digraph, Δ denotes the maximum indegree of a vertex, and the maximum multiplicity of an arc. We prove a common generalization of the above two theorems concerning the colouring of mixed graphs (these are graphs having both directed and undirected edges) in such a way that edges of the same colour form a matching forest.  相似文献

The k-biclosure of a balanced bipartite graph wiht color classes A and B is the graph obtained from G by recursively joining pairs of nonadjacent vertices respectively taken in A and B whose degree sum is at least k, until no such pair remains. A property P defined on all the balanced bipartite graphs of order 2n is k-bistable if whenever G + ab has property P and dG(b) ≧ k then G itself has property P. We present a synthesis of results involving, for some properties, P, the bistability of P, the k-biclosure of G, the number of edges and the minimum degree. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

We introduce a solitaire game played on a graph. Initially one disk is placed at each vertex, one face green and the other red, oriented with either color facing up. Each move of the game consists of selecting a vertex whose disk shows green, flipping over the disks at neighboring vertices, and deleting the selected vertex. The game is won if all vertices are eliminated. We derive a simple parity-based necessary condition for winnability of a given game instance. By studying graph operations that construct new graphs from old ones, we obtain broad classes of graphs where this condition also suffices, thus characterizing the winnable games on such graphs. Concerning two familiar (but narrow) classes of graphs, we show that for trees a game is winnable if and only if the number of green vertices is odd, and for n-cubes a game is winnable if and only if the number of green vertices is even and not all vertices have the same color. We provide a linear-time algorithm for deciding winnability for games on maximal outerplanar graphs. We reduce the decision problem for winnability of a game on an arbitrary graph G to winnability of games on its blocks, and to winnability on homeomorphic images of G obtained by contracting edges at 2-valent vertices.  相似文献

The study of a mixed graph and its Laplacian matrix have gained quite a bit of interest among the researchers. Mixed graphs are very important for the study of graph theory as they provide a setup where one can have directed and undirected edges in the graph. In this article we present a more general structure, namely the weighted directed graphs and supply appropriate generalizations of several existing results for mixed graphs related to singularity of the corresponding Laplacian matrix. We also prove many new combinatorial results relating the Laplacian matrix and the graph structure.  相似文献

Four ways of proving Menger's Theorem by induction are described. Two of them involve showing that the theorem holds for a finite undirected graph G if it holds for the graphs obtained from G by deleting and contracting the same edge. The other two prove the directed version of Menger's Theorem to be true for a finite digraph D if it is true for a digraph obtained by deleting an edge from D.  相似文献

An antimagic labeling of an undirected graph G with n vertices and m edges is a bijection from the set of edges of G to the integers {1, …, m} such that all n vertex sums are pairwise distinct, where a vertex sum is the sum of labels of all edges incident with that vertex. A graph is called antimagic if it admits an antimagic labeling. In (N. Hartsfield and G. Ringel, Pearls in Graph Theory, Academic Press, Boston, 1990, pp. 108–109), Hartsfield and Ringel conjectured that every simple connected graph, other than K2, is antimagic. Despite considerable effort in recent years, this conjecture is still open. In this article we study a natural variation; namely, we consider antimagic labelings of directed graphs. In particular, we prove that every directed graph whose underlying undirected graph is “dense” is antimagic, and that almost every undirected d‐regular graph admits an orientation which is antimagic. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graph spanners
Given a graph G = (V, E), a subgraph Gapos; = (V, Eapos;) is a t-spanner of G if for every u, v ∈ V, the distance from u to v in Gapos; is at most t times longer than that distance in G. This paper presents some results concerning the existence and efficient constructability of sparse spanners for various classes of graphs, including general undirected graphs, undirected chordal graphs, and general directed graphs.  相似文献

We introduce and study online balanced coloring games on the random graph process. The game is played by a player we call Painter. Edges of the complete graph with n vertices are introduced two at a time, in a random order. For each pair of edges, Painter immediately and irrevocably chooses one of the two possibilities to color one of them red and the other one blue. His goal is to avoid creating a monochromatic copy of a small fixed graph F for as long as possible. We show that the duration of the game is determined by a threshold function mH=mH(n) for certain graph-theoretic structures, e.g., cycles. That is, for every graph H in this family, Painter will asymptotically almost surely (a.a.s.) lose the game after m=ω(mH) edge pairs in the process. On the other hand, there exists an essentially optimal strategy: if the game lasts for m=o(mH) moves, Painter can a.a.s. successfully avoid monochromatic copies of H. Our attempt is to determine the threshold function for several classes of graphs.  相似文献

We prove that a triangle-free graph G is a tolerance graph if and only if there exists a set of consecutively ordered stars that partition the edges of G. Since tolerance graphs are weakly chordal, a tolerance graph is bipartite if and only if it is triangle-free. We, therefore, characterize those tolerance graphs that are also bipartite. We use this result to show that in general, the class of interval bigraphs properly contains tolerance graphs that are triangle-free (and hence bipartite).  相似文献

In 1983, Bouchet conjectured that every flow-admissible signed graph admits a nowhere-zero 6-flow. By Seymour's 6-flow theorem, Bouchet's conjecture holds for signed graphs with all edges positive. Recently, Rollová et al proved that every flow-admissible signed cubic graph with two negative edges admits a nowhere-zero 7-flow, and admits a nowhere-zero 6-flow if its underlying graph either contains a bridge, or is 3-edge-colorable, or is critical. In this paper, we improve and extend these results, and confirm Bouchet's conjecture for signed graphs with frustration number at most two, where the frustration number of a signed graph is the smallest number of vertices whose deletion leaves a balanced signed graph.  相似文献
