The double Schur function is a natural generalization of the factorial Schur function introduced by Biedenharn and Louck. It also arises as the symmetric double Schubert polynomial corresponding to a class of permutations called Grassmannian permutations introduced by A. Lascoux. We present a lattice path interpretation of the double Schur function based on a flagged determinantal definition, which readily leads to a tableau interpretation similar to the original tableau definition of the factorial Schur function. The main result of this paper is a combinatorial treatment of the flagged double Schur function in terms of the lattice path interpretations of divided difference operators. Finally, we find lattice path representations of formulas for the symplectic and orthogonal characters for sp(2n) and so(2n + 1) based on the tableau representations due to King and El-Shakaway, and Sundaram. Based on the lattice path interpretations, we obtain flagged determinantal formulas for these characters.  相似文献

Recently Okada defined algebraically ninth variation skew Q-functions, in parallel to Macdonald’s ninth variation skew Schur functions. Here we introduce a skew shifted tableaux definition of these ninth variation skew Q-functions, and prove by means of a non-intersecting lattice path model a Pfaffian outside decomposition result in the form of a ninth variation version of Hamel’s Pfaffian outside decomposition identity. As corollaries to this we derive Pfaffian identities generalising those of Józefiak–Pragacz, Nimmo, and most recently Okada. As a preamble to this we present a parallel development based on (unshifted) semistandard tableaux that leads to a ninth variation version of the outside decomposition determinantal identity of Hamel and Goulden. In this case the corollaries we offer include determinantal identities generalising the Schur and skew Schur function identities of Jacobi–Trudi, Giambelli, Lascoux–Pragacz, Stembridge, and Okada.  相似文献

We introduce the notion of the cutting strip of an outside decomposition of a skew shape, and show that cutting strips are in one-to-one correspondence with outside decompositions for a given skew shape. Outside decompositions are introduced by Hamel and Goulden and are used to give an identity for the skew Schur function that unifies the determinantal expressions for the skew Schur functions including the Jacobi-Trudi determinant, its dual, the Giambelli determinant and the rim ribbon determinant due to Lascoux and Pragacz. Using cutting strips, one obtains a formula for the number of outside decompositions of a given skew shape. Moreover, one can define the basic transformations which we call the twist transformation among cutting strips, and derive a transformation theorem for the determinantal formula of Hamel and Goulden. The special case of the transformation theorem for the Giambelli identity and the rim ribbon identity was obtained by Lascoux and Pragacz. Our transformation theorem also applies to the supersymmetric skew Schur function.  相似文献

We consider a flagged form of the Cauchy determinant, for which we provide a combinatorial interpretation in terms of nonintersecting lattice paths. In combination with the standard determinant for the enumeration of nonintersecting lattice paths, we are able to give a new proof of the Cauchy identity for Schur functions. Moreover, by choosing different starting and end points for the lattice paths, we are led to a lattice path proof of an identity of Gessel which expresses a Cauchy-like sum of Schur functions in terms of the complete symmetric functions.  相似文献

We show the equivalence of the Pieri formula for flag manifolds with certain identities among the structure constants for the Schubert basis of the polynomial ring. This gives new proofs of both the Pieri formula and of these identities. A key step is the association of a symmetric function to a finite poset with labeled Hasse diagram satisfying a symmetry condition. This gives a unified definition of skew Schur functions, Stanley symmetric functions, and skew Schubert functions (defined here). We also use algebraic geometry to show the coefficient of a monomial in a Schubert polynomial counts certain chains in the Bruhat order, obtainng a combinatorial chain construction of Schubert polynomials.

We define skew Schubert polynomials to be normal form (polynomial) representatives of certain classes in the cohomology of a flag manifold. We show that this definition extends a recent construction of Schubert polynomials due to Bergeron and Sottile in terms of certain increasing labeled chains in Bruhat order of the symmetric group. These skew Schubert polynomials expand in the basis of Schubert polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients that are precisely the structure constants of the cohomology of the complex flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert classes. We rederive the construction of Bergeron and Sottile in a purely combinatorial way, relating it to the construction of Schubert polynomials in terms of rc-graphs.

Some new relations on skew Schur function differences are established both combinatorially using Schützenberger’s jeu de taquin, and algebraically using Jacobi-Trudi determinants. These relations lead to the conclusion that certain differences of skew Schur functions are Schur positive. Applying these results to a basis of symmetric functions involving ribbon Schur functions confirms the validity of a Schur positivity conjecture due to McNamara. A further application reveals that certain differences of products of Schubert classes are Schubert positive. For Manfred Schocker 1970–2006. We study a family of polynomials whose values express degrees of Schubert varieties in the generalized complex flag manifold G/B. The polynomials are given by weighted sums over saturated chains in the Bruhat order. We derive several explicit formulas for these polynomials, and investigate their relations with Schubert polynomials, harmonic polynomials, Demazure characters, and generalized Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. In the second half of the paper, we study the classical flag manifold and discuss related combinatorial objects: flagged Schur polynomials, 312-avoiding permutations, generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes, the inverse Schubert-Kostka matrix, parking functions, and binary trees. The Jacobi-Trudi identity expresses a skew Schur function as a determinant of complete symmetric functions. Bressoud and Wei extend this idea, introducing an integer parameter t?−1 and showing that signed sums of skew Schur functions of a certain shape are expressible once again as a determinant of complete symmetric functions. Koike provides a Jacobi-Trudi-style definition of universal rational characters of the general linear group and gives their expansion as a signed sum of products of Schur functions in two distinct sets of variables. Here we extend Bressoud and Wei's formula by including an additional parameter and extending the result to the case of all integer t. Then we introduce this parameter idea to the Koike formula, extending it in the same way. We prove our results algebraically using Laplace determinantal expansions.  相似文献

The theory of Schur and Schubert polynomials is revisited in this paper from the point of view of generalized Thom polynomials. When we apply a general method to compute Thom polynomials for this case we obtain a new definition for (double versions of) Schur and Schubert polynomials: they will be solutions of interpolation problems.  相似文献
