In this study, some upper and lower bounds for singular values of a general complex matrix are investigated, according to singularity and Wielandt’s lemma of matrices. Especially, some relationships between the singular values of the matrix A and its block norm matrix are established. Based on these relationships, one may obtain the effective estimates for the singular values of large matrices by using the lower dimension norm matrices. In addition, a small error in Piazza (2002) [G. Piazza, T. Politi, An upper bound for the condition number of a matrix in spectral norm, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 143 (1) (2002) 141-144] is also corrected. Some numerical experiments on saddle point problems show that these results are simple and sharp under suitable conditions.  相似文献

In the first part, we obtain two easily calculable lower bounds for ‖A-1‖, where ‖·‖ is an arbitrary matrix norm, in the case when A is an M-matrix, using first row sums and then column sums. Using those results, we obtain the characterization of M-matrices whose inverses are stochastic matrices. With different approach, we give another easily calculable lower bounds for ‖A-1 and ‖A-11 in the case when A is an M-matrix. In the second part, using the results from the first part, we obtain our main result, an easily calculable upper bound for ‖A-11 in the case when A is an SDD matrix, thus improving the known bound. All mentioned norm bounds can be used for bounding the smallest singular value of a matrix.  相似文献

We provide an upper bound for the number of iterations necessary to achieve a desired level of accuracy for the Ando-Li-Mathias [Linear Algebra Appl. 385 (2004) 305-334] and Bini-Meini-Poloni [Math. Comput. 79 (2010) 437-452] symmetrization procedures for computing the geometric mean of n positive definite matrices, where accuracy is measured by the spectral norm and the Thompson metric on the convex cone of positive definite matrices. It is shown that the upper bound for the number of iterations depends only on the diameter of the set of n matrices and the desired convergence tolerance. A striking result is that the upper bound decreases as n increases on any bounded region of positive definite matrices.  相似文献

Given a norm on a finite dimensional vector space V, we may consider the group of all linear automorphisms which preserve it. The Lie algebra of this group is a Lie subalgebra of the endomorphism algebra of V having two properties: (1) it is the Lie algebra of a compact subgroup, and (2) it is “saturated” in a sence made precise below. We show that any Lie subalgebra satisfying these conditions is the Lie algebra of the group of linear automorphisms preserving some norm. There is an appendix on elementary Lie group theory.  相似文献

We obtain the optimal perturbation bounds of the Moore-Penrose inverse under the Frobenius norm by using Singular Value Decomposition, which improved the results in the earlier paper [P.-Å. Wedin, Perturbation theory for pseudo-inverses, BIT 13 (1973) 217-232]. In addition, a perturbation bound of the Moore-Penrose inverse under the Frobenius norm in the case of the multiplicative perturbation model is also given.  相似文献

We prove the spectral radius inequality ρ(A1°A2°?°Ak)?ρ(A1A2?Ak) for nonnegative matrices using the ideas of Horn and Zhang. We obtain the inequality ‖A°B‖?ρ(ATB) for nonnegative matrices, which improves Schur’s classical inequality ‖A°B‖?‖A‖‖B‖, where ‖·‖ denotes the spectral norm. We also give counterexamples to two conjectures about the Hadamard product.  相似文献

We prove strictly monotonic error decrease in the Euclidian norm of the Krylov subspace approximation of exp(A)φ, where φ and A are respectively a vector and a symmetric matrix. In addition, we show that the norm of the approximate solution grows strictly monotonically with the subspace dimension.  相似文献

As a generalization of the Hiai-Petz geometries, we discuss two types of them where the geodesics are the quasi-arithmetic means and the quasi-geometric means respectively. Each derivative of such a geodesic might determine a new relative operator entropy. Also in these cases, the Finsler metric can be induced by each unitarily invariant norm. If the norm is strictly convex, then the geodesic is the shortest. We also give examples of the shortest paths which are not the geodesics when the Finsler metrics are induced by the Ky Fan k-norms.  相似文献

The metric between subspaces M,NCn,1, defined by δ(M,N)=rk(PM-PN), where rk(·) denotes rank of a matrix argument and PM and PN are the orthogonal projectors onto the subspaces M and N, respectively, is investigated. Such a metric takes integer values only and is not induced by any vector norm. By exploiting partitioned representations of the projectors, several features of the metric δ(M,N) are identified. It turns out that the metric enjoys several properties possessed also by other measures used to characterize subspaces, such as distance (also called gap), Frobenius distance, direct distance, angle, or minimal angle.  相似文献

A set of matrices is said to have the finiteness property if the maximal rate of exponential growth of long products of matrices drawn from that set is realised by a periodic product. The extent to which the finiteness property is prevalent among finite sets of matrices is the subject of ongoing research. In this article, we give a condition on a finite irreducible set of matrices which guarantees that the finiteness property holds not only for that set, but also for all sufficiently nearby sets of equal cardinality. We also prove a theorem giving conditions under which the Barabanov norm associated to a finite irreducible set of matrices is unique up to multiplication by a scalar, and show that in certain cases these conditions are also persistent under small perturbations.  相似文献

We say that a matrix RCn×n is k-involutary if its minimal polynomial is xk-1 for some k?2, so Rk-1=R-1 and the eigenvalues of R are 1,ζ,ζ2,…,ζk-1, where ζ=e2πi/k. Let α,μ∈{0,1,…,k-1}. If RCm×m, ACm×n, SCn×n and R and S are k-involutory, we say that A is (R,S,μ)-symmetric if RAS-1=ζμA, and A is (R,S,α,μ)-symmetric if RAS-α=ζμA.Let L be the class of m×n(R,S,μ)-symmetric matrices or the class of m×n(R,S,α,μ)-symmetric matrices. Given XCn×t and BCm×t, we characterize the matrices A in L that minimize ‖AX-B‖ (Frobenius norm), and, given an arbitrary WCm×n, we find the unique matrix AL that minimizes both ‖AX-B‖ and ‖A-W‖. We also obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of AL such that AX=B, and, assuming that the conditions are satisfied, characterize the set of all such A.  相似文献

In a recent paper, Neumann and Sze considered for an n × n nonnegative matrix A, the minimization and maximization of ρ(A + S), the spectral radius of (A + S), as S ranges over all the doubly stochastic matrices. They showed that both extremal values are always attained at an n × n permutation matrix. As a permutation matrix is a particular case of a normal matrix whose spectral radius is 1, we consider here, for positive matrices A such that (A + N) is a nonnegative matrix, for all normal matrices N whose spectral radius is 1, the minimization and maximization problems of ρ(A + N) as N ranges over all such matrices. We show that the extremal values always occur at an n × n real unitary matrix. We compare our results with a less recent work of Han, Neumann, and Tastsomeros in which the maximum value of ρ(A + X) over all n × n real matrices X of Frobenius norm was sought.  相似文献

Murthy and Sethi [M.N. Murthy, V.K. Sethi, Sankhya Ser. B 27 (1965) 201-210] gave a sharp upper bound on the variance of a real random variable in terms of the range of values of that variable. We generalise this bound to the complex case and, more importantly, to the matrix case. In doing so, we make contact with several geometrical and matrix analytical concepts, such as the numerical range, and introduce the new concept of radius of a matrix. We also give a new and simplified proof for a sharp upper bound on the Frobenius norm of commutators recently proven by Böttcher and Wenzel [A. Böttcher, D. Wenzel, The Frobenius norm and the commutator, Linear Algebra Appl. 429 (2008) 1864-1885] and point out that at the heart of this proof lies exactly the matrix version of the variance we have introduced. As an immediate application of our variance bounds we obtain stronger versions of Böttcher and Wenzel’s upper bound.  相似文献

Suppose we are given an n×n matrix, M, and a set of values, (m?n), and we wish to find the smallest perturbation in the 2-norm (i.e., spectral norm), ΔM, such that MM has the given eigenvalues λi. Some interesting results have been obtained for variants of this problem for fixing two distinct eigenvalues, fixing one double eigenvalue, and fixing a triple eigenvalue. This paper provides a geometric motivation for these results and also motivates their generalization. We also present numerical examples (both “successes” and “failures”) of fixing more than two eigenvalues by these generalizations.  相似文献

We present an effective algorithm for estimating the norm of an operator mapping a low-dimensional ?p space to a Banach space with an easily computable norm. We use that algorithm to show that Matsaev’s proposed extension of the inequality of John von Neumann is false in case p=4. Matsaev conjectured that for every contraction T on Lp (1<p<) one has for any polynomial P

Some new bounds on the spectral radius of matrices   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A new lower bound on the smallest eigenvalue τ(AB) for the Fan product of two nonsingular M-matrices A and B is given. Meanwhile, we also obtain a new upper bound on the spectral radius ρ(A°B) for nonnegative matrices A and B. These bounds improve some results of Huang (2008) [R. Huang, Some inequalities for the Hadamard product and the Fan product of matrices, Linear Algebra Appl. 428 (2008) 1551-1559].  相似文献

Some inequalities for the Hadamard product and the Fan product of matrices   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
If A and B are nonsingular M-matrices, a sharp lower bound on the smallest eigenvalue τ(AB) for the Fan product of A and B is given, and a sharp lower bound on τ(A°B-1) for the Hadamard product of A and B-1 is derived. In addition, we also give a sharp upper bound on the spectral radius ρ(A°B) for nonnegative matrices A and B.  相似文献

For the Hadamard product A ° A−1 of an M-matrix A and its inverse A−1, we give new lower bounds for the minimum eigenvalue of A ° A−1. These bounds are strong enough to prove the conjecture of Fiedler and Markham [An inequality for the Hadamard product of an M-matrix and inverse M-matrix, Linear Algebra Appl. 101 (1988) 1-8].  相似文献

We consider products of unitary operators with at most two points in their spectra, 1 and eiα. We prove that the scalar operator eiγI is a product of k such operators if α(1+1/(k-3))?γ?α(k-1-1/(k-3)) for k?5. Also we prove that for eiα≠-1, only a countable number of scalar operators can be decomposed in a product of four operators from the mentioned class. As a corollary we show that every unitary operator on an infinite-dimensional space is a product of finitely many such operators.  相似文献
