A variant of the diamond principle for combinatorial ideals

We use a variant of the diamond principle to show many ideals on are not -saturated if is large. For instance, the -indescribable ideal is not -saturated if is almost ineffable.

     

Derived tubular strongly simply connected algebras

Let be a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field . Assume for a connected quiver and an admissible ideal of . We study algebras which are derived equivalent to tubular algebras. If is strongly simply connected and has more than six vertices, then is derived tubular if and only if (i) the homological quadratic form is a non-negative of corank two and (ii) no vector of is orthogonal (with respect tho the homological bilinear form) to the radical of .

     

A class of differentiable toral maps which are topologically mixing

We show that on the 2-torus there exists a open set of regular maps such that every map belonging to is topologically mixing but is not Anosov. It was shown by Mañé that this property fails for the class of toral diffeomorphisms, but that the property does hold for the class of diffeomorphisms on the 3-torus . Recently Bonatti and Diaz proved that the second result of Mañé is also true for the class of diffeomorphisms on the -torus ().

     

The structure of some virtually free pro- groups

We prove two conjectures on pro- groups made by Herfort, Ribes and Zalesskii. The first says that a finitely generated pro- group which has an open free pro- subgroup of index is a free pro- product , where the are free pro- of finite rank and the are cyclic of order . The second says that if is a free pro- group of finite rank and is a finite -group of automorphisms of , then is a free factor of . The proofs use cohomology, and in particular a ``Brown theorem' for profinite groups.

     

Closures of totally geodesic immersions into locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type

It is established that if and are connected locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type where has finite volume, and is a totally geodesic immersion, then the closure of in is an immersed ``algebraic' submanifold. It is also shown that if in addition, the real ranks of and are equal, then the the closure of in is a totally geodesic submanifold of The proof is a straightforward application of Ratner's Theorem combined with the structure theory of symmetric spaces.

     

Lindelöf property and absolute embeddings

It is proved that a Tychonoff space is Lindelöf if and only if whenever a Tychonoff space contains two disjoint closed copies and of , then these copies can be separated in by open sets. We also show that a Tychonoff space is weakly -embedded (relatively normal) in every larger Tychonoff space if and only if is either almost compact or Lindelöf (normal almost compact or Lindelöf).

     

Finite generation of powers of ideals

Suppose is a maximal ideal of a commutative integral domain and that some power of is finitely generated. We show that is finitely generated in each of the following cases: (i) is of height one, (ii) is integrally closed and , (iii) is a monoid domain over a field , where is a cancellative torsion-free monoid such that , and is the maximal ideal . We extend the above results to ideals of a reduced ring such that is Noetherian. We prove that a reduced ring is Noetherian if each prime ideal of has a power that is finitely generated. For each with , we establish existence of a -dimensional integral domain having a nonfinitely generated maximal ideal of height such that is -generated.

     

Jacobi matrices with absolutely continuous spectrum

Let be a Jacobi matrix defined in as , where is a unilateral weighted shift with nonzero weights such that Define the seqences: If and , then has an absolutely continuous spectrum covering . Moreover, the asymptotics of the solution is also given.

     

Relative Brauer groups of discrete valued fields

Let be a non-trivial finite Galois extension of a field . In this paper we investigate the role that valuation-theoretic properties of play in determining the non-triviality of the relative Brauer group, , of over . In particular, we show that when is finitely generated of transcendence degree 1 over a -adic field and is a prime dividing , then the following conditions are equivalent: (i) the -primary component, , is non-trivial, (ii) is infinite, and (iii) there exists a valuation of trivial on such that divides the order of the decomposition group of at .

     

Lengths of radii under conformal maps of the unit disc

If is the set of endpoints of radii which have length greater than or equal to under a conformal map of the unit disc, then as for the logarithmic capacity of . The exponent is sharp.

     

On the product of two generalized derivations

Two elements and in a ring determine a generalized derivation on by setting for any in . We characterize when the product is a generalized derivation in the cases when the ring is the algebra of all bounded operators on a Banach space , and when is a -algebra . We use these characterizations to compute the commutant of the range of .

     

The connected stable rank of the purely infinite simple -algebras

Suppose that is a unital purely infinite simple -algebra. If the class [1] of the unit 1 in has torsion, then ; if [1] is torsion-free in , then . If is a non-unital purely infinite simple -algebra, then .

     

Extremal points of a functional on the set of convex functions

We investigate the extremal points of a functional , for a convex or concave function . The admissible functions are convex themselves and satisfy a condition . We show that the extremal points are exactly and if these functions are convex and coincide on the boundary . No explicit regularity condition is imposed on , , or . Subsequently we discuss a number of extensions, such as the case when or are non-convex or do not coincide on the boundary, when the function also depends on , etc.

     

Helly-type theorems for hollow axis-aligned boxes

A hollow axis-aligned box is the boundary of the cartesian product of compact intervals in . We show that for , if any of a collection of hollow axis-aligned boxes have non-empty intersection, then the whole collection has non-empty intersection; and if any of a collection of hollow axis-aligned rectangles in have non-empty intersection, then the whole collection has non-empty intersection. The values for and for are the best possible in general. We also characterize the collections of hollow boxes which would be counterexamples if were lowered to , and to , respectively.

     

On a theorem of Scott and Swarup

Let be an exact sequence of hyperbolic groups induced by an automorphism of the free group . Let be a finitely generated distorted subgroup of . Then there exist and a free factor of such that the conjugacy class of is preserved by and contains a finite index subgroup of a conjugate of . This is an analog of a theorem of Scott and Swarup for surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

     

A mean value theorem on bounded symmetric domains

Let be a Cartan domain of rank and genus and , , the Berezin transform on ; the number can be interpreted as a certain invariant-mean-value of a function around . We show that a Lebesgue integrable function satisfying , , must be -harmonic. In a sense, this result is reminiscent of Delsarte's two-radius mean-value theorem for ordinary harmonic functions on the complex -space , but with the role of radius played by the quantity .

     

On real quadratic function fields of Chowla type with ideal class number one

Let be the finite field with elements, (2), , where is a square-free polynomial in with and . In this paper several equivalent conditions for the ideal class number to be one are presented and all such quadratic function fields with are determined.

     

A description of Hilbert -modules in which all closed submodules are orthogonally closed

Let , be -algebras and a full Hilbert --bimodule such that every closed right submodule is orthogonally closed, i.e., . Then there are families of Hilbert spaces , such that and are isomorphic to -direct sums , resp. , and is isomorphic to the outer direct sum .

     

Complete positivity of elementary operators

In this paper, we prove that if is an -dimensional subspace of , then is -reflexive, where denotes the greatest integer not larger than . By the result, we show that if is an elementary operator on a -algebra , then is completely positive if and only if is -positive.

     

A factorization theorem for the derivative of a function in

We show that a function is the derivative of a function in the Hardy space of the unit disk for if and only if where and . Here, can be chosen to be non-vanishing, , and . As an application, we characterize positive measures on the unit disk such that the operator is bounded from the tent space to , where .
