The paper is concerned with the problem whether a nonseparable Banach space must contain an uncountable set of vectors such that the distances between every two distinct vectors of the set are the same. Such sets are called equilateral. We show that Martin’s axiom and the negation of the continuum hypothesis imply that every nonseparable Banach space of the form C(K) has an uncountable equilateral set. We also show that one cannot obtain such a result without an additional set-theoretic assumption since we construct an example of nonseparable Banach space of the form C(K) which has no uncountable equilateral set (or equivalently no uncountable (1+ε)-separated set in the unit sphere for any ε > 0) making another consistent combinatorial assumption. The compact K is a version of the split interval obtained from a sequence of functions which behave in an anti-Ramsey manner. It remains open if there is an absolute example of a nonseparable Banach space of the form different than C(K) which has no uncountable equilateral set. It follows from the results of S. Mercourakis and G. Vassiliadis that our example has an equivalent renorming in which it has an uncountable equilateral set. It remains open if there are consistent examples of nonseparable Banach spaces which have no uncountable equilateral sets in any equivalent renorming but it follows from the results of S. Todorcevic that it is consistent that every nonseparable Banach space has an equivalent renorming in which it has an uncountable equilateral set.  相似文献

It is well known that the Fitzpatrick function of a maximal monotone operator is minimal in the class of convex functions bounded below by the duality product. Our main result establishes that, in the setting of reflexive Banach spaces, the converse also holds; that is, every such minimal function is the Fitzpatrick function of some maximal monotone operator. Whether this converse also holds in a nonreflexive Banach space remains an open problem.

Isaac Namioka conjectured that every nonreflexive Banach space can be renormed is such a way that, in the new norm, the set of norm attaining functionals has an empty interior in the norm topology. We prove the rightness of this conjecture for spaces containing an isomorphic copy of ℓ1. As a consequence, we prove also that the same result holds for a wide class of Banach spaces containing, for example, the weakly compactly generated ones.  相似文献

Every well-bounded operator on a reflexive Banach space is of type (B), and hence has a nice integral representation with respect to a spectral family of projections. A longstanding open question in the theory of well-bounded operators is whether there are any nonreflexive Banach spaces with this property. In this paper we extend the known results to show that on a very large class of nonreflexive spaces, one can always find a well-bounded operator which is not of type (B). We also prove that on any Banach space, compact well-bounded operators have a simple representation as a combination of disjoint projections.

It is proved that a WCG Banach space X is isomorphic to a conjugate Banach space if and only if there exists a closed subspace V of its conjugate space X' with positive characteristic such that X possesses the following summability property with respect to V: For every bounded sequence in X there exists a regular essentially positive summability method A such that the A-means of the sequence are σ(X,V)-convergent in X. This extends a well-known theorem of Nishiura-Waterman [8] and yields an analogous characterization of quasi-reflexive spaces. Conjugate spaces of smooth Banach spaces can also be characterized by the above summability condition.  相似文献

A Banach space has the weak fixed point property if its dual space has a weak sequentially compact unit ball and the dual space satisfies the weak uniform Kadec-Klee property; and it has the fixed point property if there exists ε>0 such that, for every infinite subset A of the unit sphere of the dual space, A∪(−A) fails to be (2−ε)-separated. In particular, E-convex Banach spaces, a class of spaces that includes the uniformly nonsquare spaces, have the fixed point property.  相似文献

We consider a Banach space X endowed with a linear topology τ and a family of seminorms {Rk(⋅)} which satisfy some special conditions. We define an equivalent norm ?⋅? on X such that if C is a convex bounded closed subset of (X,?⋅?) which is τ-relatively sequentially compact, then every nonexpansive mapping T:CC has a fixed point. As a consequence, we prove that, if G is a separable compact group, its Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) can be renormed to satisfy the FPP. In case that G=T, we recover P.K. Lin's renorming in the sequence space ?1. Moreover, we give new norms in ?1 with the FPP, we find new classes of nonreflexive Banach spaces with the FPP and we give a sufficient condition so that a nonreflexive subspace of L1(μ) can be renormed to have the FPP.  相似文献

 A characterization is given for the K?the matrices B such that the K?the sequence space , with , contains all K?the sequence spaces of order p as subspaces. It follows that the class of K?the sequence spaces of order p has a universal element which is quasinormable. In particular, there is a quasinormable space (respectively, which contains every nuclear Fréchet space with basis (respectively, every countably normed Fréchet Schwartz space).
